@@milanvillan What has watching a video of his day (passive) got to do with emailing him constantly (active)? The fact that you're annoyed, means youre part of the problem. Have a think about it. But don't email me....
Not to be a moron but I just want to say that my dad is self employed as well. He works 6 days a week. He usually wakes up at 6:45am and by 7:15am he’s already working. He’s usually home for an hour or so by lunchtime, and he’s just back to work until about 20pm. My grandpa, who is 85 this year, refused to retire from his job (he works in the family business as well) so that he could keep helping my father and my uncle. I’m sorry if It sound like I’m bragging on them, but I just took the chance to say how much I love them and how much I see them as real life heroes.
I love how David is such a humble, honest RU-vidr. It kind of scares me with the amount of psychos out there, so godspeed, 8-bit Guy. You really have earned your RU-vid status.
Personally I like the 8-bit guy's no-nonsense approach and I find some of this inadvertently funny (the jogging scene). He's obviously a busy guy with very exacting standards. The question on everyone's lips is - does he find time to talk to his wife?
Pi55edmyself laughing at the jogging scene. Love your videos David, but you looked like a serial killer fleeing from a crime scene lol. Get some jogging shorts so it looks less conspicuous
David’s humble and down-to-earth attitude towards his viewers in every video is simply inspiring, and likely the secret sauce that keeps me coming back for more - this one was a neat example, showing how he’s a human just like the rest of us, in and outside the camera frame. Keep them coming, 8-Bit Guy! :)
Be N S O N the question is, have you? he says in a few videos that hea really "intelligent", i mean hes an intelligent guy but he if he needs to say it to his viewers well theres the prepotent part, and if you see his ealiest unboxing videos (the donations) sometimes he looks down on the ones he dont like, and is kinda ungratefull in general, in the newest video he fixed this attitude, but still a prepotent and insecure person
Johnatan Gonzales 1. Which videos does he proclaim himself as smart? 2. I tried scrubbing through the earliest unboxing videos to see what you're talking about, but the most i could find is him finding an extremely yellowed Mac humorous. 3. I'm pretty sure he greenlights the stuff people send him, so the unboxing videos only show stuff he actually wants.
David, you are just too kind. Apologizing for the noise I had to concentrate to hear, I kid you not, if you would not have mentioned it I would've not heard it. Congrats on the 200 episodes!
Shoot. If people need a C64 repaired send them to me. Btw, I don’t think most people understand how busy you are. You are running your own business, preparing for seminars and who knows what else. Thank you for the videos.
10:04 Day 512: I have tried once more to strike fear in the heart of my bipedal captor, all to no avail. Repeatedly sinking my deadly fangs into his hairless, pink flesh elicits only incomprehensible cooing sounds and praise. I am aghast. I. WILL. ESCAPE!!!!
Being self employed often means working more than you would otherwise, but generally its more rewarding too. Your videos have very high production quality so the thorough research, filming and demonstrations with good editing makes them all very enjoyable, even this one. Cheers!
Right. Some people seem to think that working for yourself is the ticket to easy street when in reality you're going to be working 2 or 3 times as much as you would a 9 to 5.
I love how honest you are in this video David, reminds of your "Realities of doing business on eBay/Craigslist" video. So many people get all narky when you take a business-like attitude with them online but its a completely different world to when we all used to do little jobs to help out people we knew locally... you just can't help everyone, for free or even for a decent amount of money.. there just isn't enough hours in the day.
10:17 haha The cat biting David and him saying "YOUR FEARSOME" Cracked me up! congrats on your 200th Episode! i think I have seen them all! looking forward to all the future episodes! Plus your game!
Oh man, 2 days folding t-shirts, I'd be looking around the neighborhood until I spotted a solution. "Hey! Lawn mowing kid, wanna fold some t-shirts? It's scorching Texas sunless money"
Wait - The mailman PICKS UP mail in the US? Talk about a service. We have to hand off everything at the local supermarket, and pick up as well for the most part.
They collect outgoing mail if you're not there. You just leave it in the mailbox. Never tried it with a package. But if there's a stamped, non-postmarked letter ( or 3 ) in the box when the mail man comes around, it get's mailed.
I don't always get a pickup at the mailbox for what ever reason. They just leave outgoing mail there most of the time. Working in distribution I have found the USPS to be very un-reliable at the commercial level.
If it's not up to her standards, she needs to communicate better, or do it herself. Never argue with your wife, it just teaches her that arguing with you is acceptable.
I stumbled on a C64 video you did, and eventually found my way here. Love the video, it's the perfect view of just another guy, making his way on the digital realm. It's great to see the amount of work you put into something as simple as a video like this. A bit belated, but congrats on the big 200.
Thank you so much for this insight, David. I can't believe I have only just stumbled over it! Love your work - you and Techmoan are my favourite channels. Keep up the great work!
David, thank you very much for all your videos. Part of my Day is to watch (and watch again) one of your episodes and always surprise me with the quality of information you share for those of us who collect computers on the other side of the world too!
"I wrote a FAQ to cut down on my email." [ a few months later] New message: Dear 8-Bit Guy, I saw on one of your videos that you have a FAQ. Where is the FAQ?
regarding the storage problem. when i moved to my first place the kitchen cabinets we're perfect for 5.25 inch commodore 64 floppies. obviously when i had normal friends around they got shocked that instead of kitchenware there was floppies and electronics. under the bed has lots of storage that people miss out on but i get it differs from house to house.
Not sure if I've ever commented on your videos, David. But I thought that I needed to really to say how much I love your channel and all the enthusiasm you show for all these techs. You're down to earth and gets to the point. Every time you upload - I know it's going to be interesting and worth watching. Love restoration of old computers and stuff.
I appreciate this video. It is nice to know how hard people work behind the scenes of the camera. Love the fact that you are coding in Assembly. A long lost art form!
Jared Connell good question. I really don’t know. 8 bit gal would make her look like his sister. Mrs.8 big Guy is weird because of the guy part. Maybe just Mrs.8 biy
You have the ugliest desk ever. It screams Win95. Watching your channel is like time travelling 20 years in the past, and getting in touch with my younger tech-excited self. Dude, you rock!!
Thanks for the peek into the day in your life. I'm glad you have a focus on the Commodore side of things. I Started with the Vic 20 then got an Apple IIe, no regrets but it's great to learn. Looking forward to the Commander and I''ll be all ears if you get to an Apple history series.
Got a lot of stuffy head / coughing here as well. Love this Texas back and forth weather :) Thanks for posting this! Great to see soundtracks are still selling!
Hey, Alexander Brandon! Your soundtrack to Jazz Jackrabbit 2 is forever etched in my mind as a wonderful childhood memory and I want to say thank you. Have you seen Omri Lahav's covers? I think they're great! ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-j-OTdbR0d48.html Sorry if you already get 200 emails a day about this.
I love your videos they are very informative and I get a kick out of them. They make me feel nostalgic for how technology was back in the day. I regret not getting into computers at an earlier age but they were just so expensive not knowing who to hangout with at the time hurt too. But keep up the great work and I'll keep watching your posts.
When looking at the assembly code at 9:54 I'm not that certain that Turbo C or Turbo Pascal would not create far more efficient code from "sloppy" Pascal or C than your "hand crafted" assembly here... (As people tended to say in 1990, don't write Assembly like you write BASIC (especially on CISC architectures like x86). Think about your registers and what special properties they have and where you can use implicit flag assignment or the handful of special commands that x86 provides. When you don't want to do that, use a language that does it for you. Turbo Pascal was quite remarkable in that, but modern C compilers are even more remarkable). In this concrete case, use BX (which is the unicorn of registers as it is both part of AX/BX/CX/DX and part of BP/BX/SI/DI) instead of SI, and also pull the mem accesses to read CHECK_X and CHECK_Y out of the loop. When you INC BL, the ZF will show you if you wrapped around for free (so no need to CMP). (When you have to count to not that "round" values, think about reversing the loop and using DEC/JNZ instead of INC/CMP/JNE in case the order does not really matter) In a real old commercial game this would also be the point to think about storing the X/Y pairs in a word adjacent to each other instead of two separate byte arrays (and giving the UNIT_TYPE 0 a special coordinate that cannot be used by others) so you can use REPNE SCASW command to quickly find the first match. Having the function output value in two memory locations is also quite resource intensive, and unusual to read since the convention is to use AX or DX or the carry flag for function return values. On the other hand, probably that code is not typical or not a tight loop (which it seems to me, though), and I really don't want to steal more of your precious time... So here a suggestion that keeps everything else the same (except that it clobbers BX instead of SI now and is slightly faster and shorter): CHECK_FOR_UNIT_AT_XY: XOR BX, BX MOV AH, CHECK_X MOV AL, CHECK_Y CFU01: CMP UNIT_TYPE[BX], 0 JE CFU10 CMP UNIT_LOCATION_X[BX], AH JNE CFU10 CMP UNIT_LOCATION_Y[BX], AL JNE CFU10 MOV CHECK_XY_UNIT, BL MOV CHECK_XY_RESULT, 1 RET CFU10: INC BL JNZ CFU01 MOV CHECK_XY_RESULT, 0 RET
I love your channel. Reminds me of growing up in the 80's messing around with my Apple lle. It really reminds me of why I enjoy this industry and work in it. Thanks David.
New fan here and thank you the content. The fun content has been keeping me sane through my semester filled with senior level computer science classes.
I hope you realize that you are one of the only good e-celebs. Really, there are maybe 5 other people besides yourself who regularly make good videos in this field. THANKS from the bottom of my heart
You've just got my respect and admiration. Keep up the good work. The strange thing is 90% of videos on RU-vid, I just "skim view" through, not because they aren't interesting or not relevant to me but I have a short attention span and doesn't take a lot to distract me . . . but in here I'm always compelled to watch whole videos from beginning to end. PS: +1 for showing your cats. :-D
Recently discovered your channel. Growing up my dad was an early adopter of home computers and I remember loading programs from cassette tapes and carefully typing in programs for games in Basic that I found in computer magazines. Thanks for taking me back in time!
I loved this episode, it was somehow conceptual art to have yourself film your life as if you were not filming it, and filming how you film your videos.
Congrats on the self-employed life! Everyone wants to be self-employed doing what they love but when it becomes a reality, they soon realize it's actually a lot more work than anticipated. However, you seem to be doing fine and I commend you for this video demonstrating your daily routine. Please keep making the awesome video content! You will find it's easier to balance the workload and real life commitments the more you do it and the better you get at it.
If he does not have time to do all those requests, then maybe it's time for him to start "8 Bit Enterprises," get an office, and hire some workers to do repairs, make copies of manuals, and EEPROMS, etc. for a fee.
I think you could sum up this whole video with "if it fits with my mission statement [preserving computer history], I'll try my best". He's not a repair shop. He's not an e-friend. He's a video museum.
