Those with a TRDpro skid plate - go to the local hardware store and buy rubber washers to hold your front bolts in place. In other words, insert the bolt through the plate, drip space down, and add the rubber washer on top. This washer will hold the bolt and washer in place while you lift the plate up to bolt on.

Friendly tip, probably best to unscrew the oil cap before draining your old oil to release any pressure or residual oil in the system

I own 2 4runners 5th gen. My wife has the Limited and I own the 2016 TRD pro. I also changed my spark plugs at 30k and I noticed my fule effeicy improve by 3 mpg more on my TRD pro and 4 on my Limited. I was getting around 12 mpg on my limited and 14 on my TRD pro. My advice is CHANGE THE OIL THE ENGINE OIL THE FIRST 2K MILES, THEN AT 5K, THEN EVERY 3-4K WITH SYNTHETIC. Why, from experimentation and diagnostic tools from my friends shops using heat and yes, I was so OCD about getting my answer, I sent in samples to a lab to see the results. The first 2k miles are curicial because that's when the engine is breaking in and there will be some fine metal shaving, you wont see it, but you can feel somewhat and the lab will defiantly indicate that. After that, at 5k, your repeating the process with less shavings. It took me a total of 3 engine changes at short intervals for about 10k miles to break it in. Where I found very little metal shavings. I don't care what anyone says, this is the proper way to do it NOW IF YOU TOW, LIVE IN PLACES LIKE NYC WHERE THERE LOTS OF STOP AND GO AND HEAT. GET THAT ENGINE OIL CHANGED OUT EVERY 3K RELIGIOUSLY . TRANSMISSION OIL THE FIRST 15K MILES IS CRUCIAL. THERE WAS VISIBLE TRANSMISSION SHAVINGS then at 15K MILES. Personally I would even do it at 8k then 15k then 30k. Then every 20-30k miles DEPENDING ON HOW YOU U SE YOUR 4RUNNER.

All great advice! Most people are not as meticulous, but I agree it will lead to a longer life of the engine. Nicely done using Blackstone or whoever for testing. I use them as well. Thanks for the comment!

@@BtwilliasGarage I use only “Toyota Genuine Motor Oil” : ILSAC GF-5 multigrade SAE 0W-20 engine oil . You get better gas mileage than the 5w series. Everyone tries to argue, and i"m like READ YOUR MANUAL BUDDY! This is straight out of their manual. I swore to everyone that my gas mileage was attributed to oil, no one believed me. NOT EVEN THE DEALER. WHEN I went back to make sure the oil was ow-20, which it wasn't, it was 5w, I had them change it immediately to ow, it took me 2 oil changes to see the difference of 4 mpg extra. that matters. because 4mpg extra at 20 gallons, that's 40 extra gallons at 3 dollars a gallon, that's $120 dollar saved. This is from the Owner's manual for 4runners 5th gen page 465- “Toyota Genuine Motor Oil” is used in your Toyota vehicle. Use Toyota approved “Toyota Genuine Motor Oil” or equivalent to satisfy the following grade and viscosity. Oil grade: ILSAC GF-5 multigrade engine oil Recommended viscosity: SAE 0W-20 SAE 0W-20 is the best choice for good fuel economy and good starting in cold weather. If SAE 0W-20 is not available, SAE 5W-20 oil may be used. However, it must be replaced with SAE 0W-20 at the next oil change. Oil viscosity (0W-20 is explained here as an example): • The 0W in 0W-20 indicates the characteristic of the oil which allows cold startability. Oils with a lower value before the W allow for easier starting of the engine in cold weather. • The 20 in 0W-20 indicates the viscosity characteristic of the oil when the oil is at high temperature. An oil with a higher viscosity (one with a higher value) may be better suited if the vehicle is operated at high speeds, or under extreme load conditions. I love Toyota 4runners. and I'm a "fanboy" lol of their SUV ( landcruisers, prado, lexus) , but that's as far as I go. To increase torque on your ratchet, you can always use a piece of copper pipe about 12" long and insert about 4" of the ratchet handle into the copper pipe. Or you can just use the the ratchet extension with a deep socket (if you set comes with deep sockets) instead of the copper pipe.

If the drain plug on the oil filter is over tightened , yep it's supposed to be torqued to 10 pounds. The filter cap is supposed to be torqued down to 25 pounds. Over tightening without using a torque wrench you could end up having big problems down the road. You Can you hold the oil filter cap in your hand and tighten the drain plug with the torque wrench. 10 pounds clicks off very easily. Then do everything else and put the cap back up underneath the engine and torque to 25 pounds. Drain plug, replace the washer and torque to 30 pounds. Good video, details are important.

On the standard skid plate that has the little fingers that slide into slots that require you to hinge them down to slide it forward to remove which can be frustrating if you take the j hook bend out of them it will just slide forward without the hassle.

I've never had a problem with my cap staying on the filter housing like that. Once the cap is off and through draining I have to use that housing tool to remove it from the block. I use my torque wrench for that job. It's much easier than your short socket wrench because it's longer and you're using more leverage. Food for thought.

Its hit or miss for me. I think the cap is more of a fight when i over-tighten it. Who actually torques that cap? Anymore, I wait till the metals tuch and give it a little more. I figure the Oring in there will prevent it from backing out...

I had trouble removing the metal cap off her housing my daughter's Rav4 once. Each time I tried to remove the cap the entire filter housing would turn. So I used my impact driver and it zipped off nice and neat. I just wish Toyota would improve the funnel to drain the oil from the filter before removing the housing.

Hello! Great video. I do have a question about the Fumoto drain valve. In the instructions it says not to over torque. I am assuming this just means do not over tighten, is that correct? Just starting to do my own oil changes and this valve looks like it will make my life easier.
@BtwilliasGarage
@BtwilliasGarage 4 года назад
That is correct. If you don't have a torque wrench then I would advise you to just tighten it with a wrench until it give you resistance. Just go until it stops plus a extra little bump. Don't go crazy with tightening after it stops. You will be good. Best of luck and stay healthy

aftermarket valves, for whatever reason require less torque to tighten down than the standard drain plug. for example, the standard drain plug requires 30 ft.lbs, whereas the ValvoMax Oil Drain Valve (M12-1.25) suggests 16-18 ft.lbs. www.toyota-4runner.org/5th-gen-t4rs/285126-beginner-fluid-maintenance.html

some background. 30k miles, first 2 oil changes were done at dealership at 10k and 20k...my metal tab broke off(and some housing material came with it too) after loosening it cause the dealer over torqued it :(. after putting everything back (skid plates too etc) and triple checking torque specs etc(only thing i did not torque but hand tightened was the bottom housing gasket), i stupidly put all 6.6 quarts and didnt check for leaks. after 5 mins, i look underneath and oil was everywhere. after i contained the oil spill, i check drain plug area first and my drain plug area is clean and dry so that leaves the filter housing area that the leak came from. i can't verify if the housing got cracked etc all i know is the metal tab and some of the housing material came off but nothing that looked like a hole/crack was in the housing? not sure if this helped but after i took off the housing to inspect it, i put some oil into the housing to see if it would leak but it didnt. i still cant pinpoint the oil leak since i put the skid back on so the oil got everywhere. i was fortunate to buy a replacement OEM filter housing and will be picking it up in the next day morning. i hope a new housing sorts this out.

Yes you should use it instead of doing like I did and using the ratchet in the cap to tighten it. I overtightened mine by not using the socket tool. Pretty much use it to tighten it back. And if your small drain plug at the bottom isn't overtightened you will likely need it to crack your housing loose once it unscrews. Make sense? Sorry for the confusion

There is always a little oil left and the 4runners definitely have enough room to change the oil without any sort of lift. You could go either route, but I wouldn't lose sleep over it either way. Thanks for watching!

@richhutchings8979

If you buy the high miles oil filter you could go 10 to15000 miles. You can use mobil 1or Bosch or Royal purple oil filter. High miles, one only. All other cheap oil filters past 6000 miles basically get plugged and dump right back into the engine and now you're recirculating extremely dirty oil. I use full synthetic mobil 1 with the high mile oil filter change it every 10000 miles. Engine runs quieter lower RPMs with full synthetic. Gets better gas mileage as well. I also changed out the transmission fluid, transfer case and rear diff with mobile one synthetic.
@mrr226
@mrr226 4 года назад
FWIW, Toyota maintenance schedule for 5th gen V6 is 10k - it's not the same for all engines even if using full synthetic (my 2014 Tundra Flex Fuel is every 5k).
@mattsmith6828
@mattsmith6828 4 года назад
Toyota suggests 10K when using synthetic. personally, i wouldn't even wait that long. I do mine every 7,500. Scotty Kilmer is great for stuff like that. my general rule of thumb is: Conventional Oil: ~ 4,000 miles Synthetic Oil: ~ 7,500
@user-tb7rn1il3q
@user-tb7rn1il3q 3 года назад
@@richhutchings8979 Actually the cheap filters are less likely to clog. Unless the engine is coming apart or a crappy air filter is used the oil filter will last for two to three oil changes. I change the oil filter every other time. The filter barely has any dirt in it. I could easily go three oil changes per filter. The oil filter and skid plate is a horrible design on the 5th Gen 4R. A slightly dirty oil filter works better than a brand new one. Changing the filter every other time saves money, time, hassle, and the engine will be subject to less wear.

The plastic filter cover will last the life of the vehicle if care is taken not to overtighten it. But for added security, it pays to invest in the all metal filter cover. I wish Toyota would've done this anyway, being it doesn't take a conventional filter like most other vehicles. For a $40K SUV, I think they could've afforded to do that.
