Some tips for us guys w/o a lift. I have not found a way to remove OEM skid plate w/o lifting front end. So if there is a way, I'm ready to learn. Amazon has a magnetic tipped on a flexible type spring on a screwdriver handle. So once the oil plug is broke loose, the tool keeps hands clean and unscrew to remove drain plug. Next saving your old residential HVAC air filter; cut a piece and lay it on your drain pan. Now, drain oil NO splash. Saw this on another channel. Tried this on brother's Ram 1500 and it worked. NO SPLASH whatsoever no speckled faces and arms. Motovix oil filter wrench is a work of art. i store mine in the original box, it us just a beauty and works perfectly. When installing new filter, the OEM spec of 18 lb-ft seems slight but you will fight the removal. The O-ring does the sealing, so as stated, tighten until housing comes to a stop and it's done. Indexing is great idea for consistent re-install. Use the OEM Maint. App and set all your maintenance items. ATF, front/rear gear lube, prop shaft, battery, coolant, PS fluid, wipers, brake inspections and so on. Great tool to track maintenance items, worth the time to use it. Nicely done video, TY....
Jon with your help I was able to hit a manhood milestone and finally did my first ever oil change with my 5th Gen 4Runner TRD ORP Lunar Rock…. The feeling of this accomplishment has me feeling all full of Fanta, drinking modelos and attacking the old lady in the sack tonight, thanks big fella!
Very nice job! Very nice video. 👍🏻 I do my own oil changes as well. Try Amsoils oil and filter kit. It’s on the expensive side but it’s worth it if you hold on to your vehicles for a long time. That 4Runner is pretty sweet if you keep taking care of it like that it will last forever.
Great video. The only thing I’d add is to get the skid plate bolts in by hand before hitting it with an impact. My local dealership was kind enough to NOT do that and cross threaded the bolts. Great video
Have a 23 TRD off road in lunar rock….first change 700km. Lots of metal….second 1300km little metal, third 2500km. No metal. First couple oil changes in any new motor are crucial to longevity. Love this vehicle and it will love you back.
@@ruckinehround6965 On our 2014 changed over to 0w30 at about 84k and traded in at 104k. Our 23' SR5 2wd we bought used with 5k on it. Did immediate oil change to 5w-30. South Texas it's been 98* to 105* for over two weeks, yea not gonna stress internals. I'm old and plan to keep this one until I'm gone. Frankly never used the 4wd on our Trail Edition but knew it was there if we needed. And this one has a 3rd row seat that we have no need for. Yeah we got caught up in emotion and got taken on this one. ( I mean we all know a 4rnr MEANS 4wd right...lol) But, now it's done and will care for it like I did the 2014 TE. 5w-30 for our new (to us) Barcelona Red with TRD wheels. BTW, what's up with the TRD wheels on a 2wd?? Marketing maybe??? And many have also concluded that 0w-20 is driven by EPD CAFE numbers, not engineering. keep grinning....4rnr just makes me grin....🙂
I have STOPPED using the Toyota oil plug washers. They have a fiber blue coating on each side and after 3000 miles the coating Separates from the aluminum washer and I have to retrieve the coating and I find the drain plug is not tight any longer on the oil Pan.. I wrote Toyota regarding the problem and just received a non specific thanks for the information. Clearly they have their hands full with engine and transmission replacements. I have gone to copper washers NISSAN on my toyotas
I also have a 2023 4Runner pro. I have a suggestion for you. 10k miles in I changed the tires as the Nitto's it comes with has like a zero rating for now and ice. I put LT tires Goodyear Wrangler Duratrac RT (load range E 10ply) and besides it being better in snow it also completely changed the ride for the better. It feels more planted, takes bumps better and doesnt wallow over the road. Made me love the 4runner even more.
Thanks a ton, great suggestion! I appreciate you taking the time to let me know about something that works well! The 4Runner is such a great machine, and the right tires can make all the difference. Now I have something else to get installed on the 4Runner. :) Enjoy your awesome ride!
And for the rare 2wd owners the Michelin Defenders LTX is flippn awesome. We drove from south Texas to Chandler doing 70-85mph and was a smooth straight tracking drive!
Great video, thanks for posting this, like another person commented that this is the best video so far with your clear explanations on all the steps. Just one question, I noticed you said you changed your oil at 3,000 miles? Or 6 months? So you don't do it every 5,000 miles (due to driving habits) or every 10,000 miles like Toyota recommends. BTW, nice well lit garage!
After about 20 oil changes with those blue crush washers, they seem to corrode after a short time and the drain bolt loses it's tightness and may cause an oil leak. I toque them down pretty good after seeing so many where you can take the drain bolt off by hand. And I am using toyota branded ones, not chinese or anything.
Thank you bought a 2023 trd off road premium and will do my oil changes also. Question does it drain well using ramps? Just the regular gorilla ramps that are not too crazy high.
Great purchase! Yes, where the drain plug is located, using ramps shouldn't effect what drains out, good question! If you are concerned, you could sacrifice 1/8 quart or so of new oil and pour it in topside to help displace anything that could be in the bottom of pan with drain plug still out, but that isn't necessary. Go for it! 😊
I actually just leave the original washer on it and re-use it. I do the same thing with my filter, just let it drain out slowly without taking that small cap out.
My 20 year old Matrix has zero leaks since e bought it new. My Brother just bought a 2024 Rav4, at 400 miles he had an oil leak. They had to drop the oil pan and replace the gasket. Not making them like the old days.
This is a very detailed explanation. Thanks. The only thing that I don't agree with is that you're changing your oil every 3k miles. Isn't that overdoing it? Specially with full synthetic which toyota recommends every 7,500 to 10,000 miles and 3000 to 5000 for conventional oil. It's your money, just something to point out.
Care Care nut says 5k / 6mos for synthetic unless you're taking long trips...then you're closer to 10k miles For turbo engines...it's recommended for 3k miles.
I'm new to the 4.0 and Toyota engine oil filters, why do I see some of the oil filter housing tools say 64 mm or 64.3mm? Please advise and thanks in advance
glad you mentioned Car Care Nut and also about prefilling the oil filter. I have to mention the Motor Oil Geek channel that does a really deep dive on the benefits of pre-filling: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-939WTeorBnQ.html
If you REALLY want to take “good” care of your 4Runner, (or any Toyota) You should really use Toyota or at minimum a premium brand oil. But you will NEVER go wrong with using the factory oil. Even CCN says, don’t use aftermarket parts or fluids if at all possible. Then they will last 1,000,000 miles.
