Thank you! Great job on the video too. Just had to share this after reading many of the comments below. I also subscribed and liked your video and channel. I was a mechanic for over 25 years, worked for independents, fleets, and several dealerships. I've seen some of the many things other mechanics did, pretty shady shit too. Never replacing the oil filters was one of the many. Because of that, at over 60 years old, I will still do all of the repairs and maintenance I can, myself. I was shocked to see this type of oil filter on my 2019 4 Runner. LMFAO. My first car was a 64 Chevelle SS with a 283 CID. Fun car....the oil filter was about the same as the 4 Runners. I died laughing, thinking about it and talking to wife.....we went about 40 years backwards in time with this type of oil filter. Way to go Toyota! I think the last year GM used this type of filter was around 1967, went to the spin on cartridge type. Still laughing at this.

Removing the front skid plate was the hardest part of the job. The two hooks in the front that the skids plate hangs on were very difficult to free up. Makes me thing about not replacing that skid plate (I don't off road with this vehicle.)

I fought with my skid plate today for 10 minutes and couldn’t get it to unhook no matter the angle or how I pulled/lifted. I managed to get one side free but couldn’t get the other. I just let it rest down on my chest like always and worked from there. The next oil change I’m going to try to remove it again and drill out the spot welds for that section and be done with it.

According to The Car Care Nut, the plastic filter housing Can last the life of the vehicle. The issue is lube techs seem to over-tighten them which damages them. He recommends sticking to the OEM plastic filter housing from the factory, and I’ll follow that advice..awesome Steph by step nonetheless! Thank you!
@5MinuteFixit
@5MinuteFixit 10 месяцев назад
Yes that is definitely true about the housing lasting the life of the vehicle and it is perfectly reasonable to keep it. The only reason I’ve changed mine to a metal one is because my other Toyota vehicle (Sienna) had one from the factory and mine was already damaged by the previous owner/mechanic of my vehicle. Thank you for watching and thank you for the compliment on the video!
@jbpooh
@jbpooh 5 месяцев назад
The plastic ones can, if taken care of, last the lifetime, but why chance it? The metal one will not break and actually helps cool the oil a little due to heat transfer. There's no down side other than cost going with a metal housing.
@Burps___
@Burps___ 3 месяца назад
@@jbpoohit’s not correct that there is no downside, as has been well documented by the #1 Toyota channel on RU-vid, AMD at The Car Care Nut. Several reasons he gives, but one I will share is metal on metal threads can damage the housing opening. We all love Toyotas, the Japanese engineers knew what they were doing in the plastic housing.

Great video. One comment: when changing the center tube, you say to push the tab in, but it’s hard to see what you’re doing at that point. I couldn’t tell if you meant to push it “in” toward the tube or “in” toward the bottom of the housing. I pushed it toward the bottom, but then had to bend it up to get the new tube in. Tab seems a bit weak now, but I shouldn’t have to bend it any more. Hope I didn’t mess up. I don’t like these tabs. My old Camry had similar tabs holding in the spark plug tube seals, and by the time I got it, the tabs had weakened and broken off.

Thanks for this DIY video. I decided to do my own oil changed and found out a lot about FCKn Jiffy Lube, Midas . They apparently have been changing the oil but not the filter for the couple oil changes. The moment I tried to take out the skid plate, the screws were so rusted, they snapped off. After further checking, there were some screws missing. I will never trust another Company to change my oil. My plastic oil filter housing looked like it was original one from the factory, even had that metal tab clip still on it. Again Thanks for the Video.

Removing the “drain” plug on the bottom of the filter housing, and the supplied “drain valve” that comes with the new oil filter would make far less of a mess, and no need for a plastic bag over the housing or extra clean up. A 3/8” ratchet will fit the drain plug of the filter housing. Remove it. Snap the supplied drain valve in to place, and let the housing drain. Remove the housing, throw away the old filter, removing the old o-ring seal, wipe out the housing, coat the new o-ring seal with a bit of oil, put new filter in the housing, screw the housing back on until tight (NO MORE) install housing drain plug with new o-ring seal. NO MESS to clean up. NO DAMAGE to plastic housing. Been doing it that way since new, and NEVER been a problem. If you decide to switch to the “aluminum” filter housing, BE SURE TO COAT THE THREADS OF THE HOUSING WITH A LIITLE BIT OF LITHIUM GREASE (or anti-seize), otherwise the filter housing WILL be stuck to the engine block by the time your next oil change is due. The “threads” will seize to the engine due to “corrosion” Seen it happen MANY times at the shop. VERY big pain in the butt to remove there after. I think this is why they stayed with the “fiberglass” housings perhaps (just a guess) Not saying the aluminum housing isn’t better / stronger, but it CAN be a bigger headache too if not done properly.

Do you have to remove the metal skid plate in order to access the small plate that covers the oil drain plug?
@mark166
@mark166 10 месяцев назад
Very good video instruction. I can't stop wondering why Toyota did such a terrible design of their 5th gen filter position (under the skid-plate with no access window). The previous gen had filter location under the motor hood and it was a breeze to change oil in those engines. While there are many good design features in 5th, some engineering solutions are amazingly stupid. To simplify oil change process I cut the access window in the skid plate and I made the cover that easy to open. It made my life much easier when I change the filter.

Thumbs up. The only thing I would have mentioned is the importance of following torque specs especially for those who wish to drain the oil filter housing before removing the oil filter housing cap. Oil filter housing cap = 25 N•m Oil filter cap drainbolt = 12.5 N•m Personally I don't think there is a problem with the plastic part as long as those torque specs are followed. But time will tell. If mine ever does give me a problem then I will likely replace it with a metal one.

@@itsme6026 What kind of statement is that, "Nobody torques the housing."? There is absolutely nothing wrong with the plastic housing as long as you treat it properly and do not abuse it. That means getting the proper cup-style filter wrench that fits over all of the flats on the housing. Remove the round metal bottom plate from the plastic housing first, before draining the oil. No oil will come out. Insert the plastic drain tool that comes with the filter with a short piece of fuel hose to route the oil into the drain pan. This is the way cartidge filters are designed to work, and they are fine. Now unscrew the plastic filter housing using the PROPER filter wrench. Change the paper element, lubricate both O rings with NEW oil. Put the housing back on the engine, then put the bottom cap into the housing. NOW drain the oil using the drain plug. The crush washer will stick to the oil pan every time, and it's not easy to remove. I use a clean razor blade, being EXTREMELY careful not to scratch the metal surface. Been doing this on my FJ Cruiser with the exact same 1GR-FE engine and filter housing and skid plate for 13 years and have not had one single problem. Don't follow this video. Do it as I described and you will be just fine. Yes, it is a pain to remove the skid plate, but it's only 4 bolts and it's not difficult. It has two hooks in the front to support it so remove those bolts first and let it hang on those two hooks while you remove the rear two bolts and lower it down. To whoever complained about the paper element, you will find that 99% of all filters are paper. Some are synthetic fiber but it is not needed in this case. Use the genuine Toyota filter element from a Toyota dealer (not an online fake) for about $6 every 4k-5k miles and you will find that your engine will last hundreds of thousands of miles. If you live in the south, switch to 5W-20.

If you look at some of the older FJ cruiser handbooks before 20w oil was a 'thing' it states use 30 or 40 weight in the past, especially if your hot climate it wont hurt anything but maybee .10% mpg decrease lol.
