Ever since I discovered this video I cannot help but come back to it (same for a more recent one, the rehearsal of Lil Darlin) - I love everything but especially Alba's assurance when starting her solo... It's also fantastic to see how Little Elsa is not very comfortable singing the trombone part but shows the same assurance as her sister when starting the trumpet ensemble after the trombone part. Just exceptional, and deeply moving. All that to lead to Elsa's fantastic solo on What's New in 2017. You've got to love this little girl and her friends.
Holy smokes are these kids great! This has left me in tears! They have in a very short period of time whaI could NEVER do in 37 years playing trombone and Baritone!
It brings tears of joy to my eyes to see these kids getting into this beautiful music which is slowly disappearing from the land that it originated...! Muchas Gracias!
I think the existence of this group in Barcelona, and some similar ones in other countries, means jazz will never die as long as we have a civilized human world.
These kids are great , especially the trumpet ladies.. after seeing this early video, I can see how much they have matured as musicians..... My spirit soars at the beauty of your music........ Mahalo
Thank you, Joan. I never get tired of listening to listen these young people playing jazz. They played with humility and yet so perfect. Love you all, and pray you are ALL safe in this pandemic COVID19.
Alba and little sister Elsa showed such talent, even then. Just think, for the rest of their lives they can look back and remember what I hope will be the start of wonderful careers. They are only a part of such na superb team, but I adore them.
so fascinating....these kids are the next generation of great jazzmen... JOAN, you are doing a GREAT JOB ! congratulations! (from a 77 years old jazz fan!)
@@mcclechinois1213 that is me,..ha..chopsticks, eh....our parents are from Japan ...but I was born in Canada...and prefer forks. These young musicians are amazing!!!
Most 6 year olds wouldn't even be able to sit still for 5 minutes, and here is Elsa playing coordinated in an ensamble, not missing a single note. I can't stop admiring the amount of love and patience maestro Chamorro is giving these kids
That was really, really good. I've been watching long enough and so many now it feels like looking at old family videos. Alba A had real feeling in her playing even at that young age as can be seen now in her vocals as well, like Trieste. To see Max and Magali, Alba E, Carla, Jan and all playing so well so young and the group singing as in the old big band tradition just adorable and with a great sound!! Thanks so much Joan Chamorro for bringing us into this wonderful musical family. Love these kids...and the old guys as well.
It's amazing to go back to the beginnig and watch the youngsters grow into their instruments. I just fell over one vid looking for sax tunes... now i got stuck for about one week in your great gigs...I played sax in a bigband like yours at school 30 years ago and and so my daughter does now...The sound is always the the "same" but n e v e r boring at all. You have a new subscriber🎷 Muchas gracias
Gracias.
Wow…Alba A. Was so good to be so young‼️. Little Elsa was so darn cute‼️👍. Magali was so mature looking even at such a young age. Carla Motis always looks the same…she never ages.
Maestrisimo!!!
Here is Joan's text (above) translated into English. Joan, we love you. -------------------------------------------------------------------------- YOUNG CATS ... REHEARSING FOR THE TERRASSA JAZZ FESTIVAL Tell me it is not true what my eyes see ..a tick that plays the trumpet was placed in the young cats rehearsal ... and her way of doing it was wielding a smile ... she had a treasure under her arm ... and when she blew through it came colorful lights, streamers, gold dust, and the party began. The tick in question is called Elsa Armengou and she is 6 years old ... she is the sister of the hitherto Benjamin of the Sant Andreu jazz band ... the Alba Armengou ... who is 9, and who, also, when she blows on her trumpet, and when she smiles, it is impossible not to forget everything and not smile with her :-D ... Various notes: The music is in their heads, not on paper ... (no sheet music) Listen to Alba's solo ... and observe how clearly a sharp Yes appears, as if it were so easy And observe how they sing a trombone solo that does not exist, and for that reason they sing it, in unison several of the winds. Watch the pianist swing (Jan Domenech 12 years old) the strength of the setbacks of the metals on the first bridge, when the saxes sing the melody (two trumpets (6 and 9 years old) a horn (that of Max Salgado, 11 years old) and a trombone (paula Berzal, 14) watch the rhythmic section, with Carla Motis (13), Joan Aleix Mata (14) and Magali Datzira (14) ,,, looking for us to move our feet ,,, without stopping The sax section, with Joan Marti (12) and Alba Esteban (11) at the alto saxes, and Eugeni Mas (14) and Helena Pañart (13) on tenor saxes ... plastering and vibrating like Count Bassie's best section Tell me it is not true what my eyes see and my ears hear -- a tick got into the young cats trial.
Thanks, Ralph ... I was about to have a go at translating it myself as I wanted to understand a bit more about Joan's relationship with his apprentices at this early point in their development ... still amazes me how quickly they were transformed from this to the strong, confident young adults we admire in 2020! @@branscombeR Joan's work with these kids is one of the best miracles I have ever had the privilege to observe. His methods, and perhaps the social ambience in Barcelona, combined to create something wondrous. There is one variable I can't judge: how much personal and family musical background and musical talent the kids began with. Were they already an elite group of young proto-musicians when they started at Sant Andreu? We know that Rita Payes's mother is a classical guitarist, that Victor Carascosa's father Alfons Carrascosa arranges songs, and that Elsa's sister Alba also does a fine job with the trumpet. Heredity? I don't know.
@@RalphDratman I have on occasion wondered about their home background as well. I know Rita's mother Elisabeth Roma is an accomplished guitarist (not pianist, as far as I know) and Abril Saurí's father plays the drums like his daughter, but they can't all be blessed with musicians in the family. I attribute this wonderful group to the nurturing environment Joan Chamorro created. He's the unique element in it.
@@ClaudioRCFaria I really agree -- Joan is a genius and a saint -- but I also think the atmosphere in Barcelona, maybe particularly in that neighborhood, is very special for music. Watch the local couples dancing to SAJB's music during some of the concerts! Very, very special.
@@RalphDratman Right you are. All hail St. Chamorro! - I mean this both playfully and reverently. And sure, that dancing is amazing, fills me with joy. btw - I just remembered another talented parent: Alfons Carrascosa is a professional musician and arranger, who must be proud of his son Victor's trumpet playing. More than parents, I marvel at the number of siblings in SAJB. Armengou, Motis, Datzira, Casanova (are Miquel and Joana related?), Fernandez (are Eva and Miranda? - they don't look alike), plus others I don't know or momentarily forget.
Vida longa a você.
EXCELENTE VER TANTOS TALENTOS JUNTOS.
And let’s not forget collaboration! Teamwork is what they’re doing. Each carrying their weight and not letting the others down. And at such an early age! Incredible that Joan Chamorro can draw the best from these budding musicians.
Such a nice look back, when the band exercisted this tune, which later ??? was such an adorable performance of li'l "garabata" on public performance ? ( was this the real exercise ? Tell me pls ) Should I be happy for past sensations ? Or just enjoy the growth of the chicken crowd ?
"Garrapata" means "tick" ("zecca" in italian, i think). It is the affectionate nickname, never offensive, that Alba Armengou had in the band, for being the smallest. When her sister Elsa came in, the nickname and status was transferred to her.
