Great videos! Would you happen to know if this repair can be done in the engine compartment for a 2010 Lincoln MKT? I have some concerns with the clearance in that engine compartment.
Most thorough Ford repair videos on the internet. Brian, I've said this before, you are an asset to the Ford community. Thanks for taking the time and effort to create these vids. Thanks for being open to questions.
First off, THANK YOU for your MILITARY SERVICE! Secondly, your focus on the job at hand is LEGENDARY! Last but not least, your DISCIPLINE answering (or not) some of these EGOBOOST haters/challengers/doubters in the comments section is just AWESOME!
This is what you hope all mechanics aspire to be. This guy is the only guy I want working on my truck. I love the professionalism and willingness to change out all of the proper seals, o-rings, etc. Excellent video!
@@jasonplank8803 How long did the job take you and what did you spend on parts and special tools? And how many miles on your Ecoboost when you took this job on. Congratulations on a successful job!
I’m actually doing this on my truck now, and can honestly say it would’ve been 1000x’s harder without this video, even with the TSB instructions I printed out from Ford. Only thing is ford calls for 9 hours lol it takes much longer. I took the inter cooler out which I think is a must. Hardest part is actually getting everything off to get to the chain and phasers. And last thing is he doesn’t change the secondary tensioners because they were ok but they come in the kit and mine were showing signs of wear so I swapped them out as well
@@jrolla1858 what kit did you get? I was trying to go Ford OEM all the way if I could just having a hard time finding the parts for things like the guides and Tensioners. BL3Z-6D256-C has several parts in it but not the guides and tensioners. I don't know much about Melling and thought about getting their kit along with the BL3Z-6D256-C kit but that would leave me with two primary chains since both include one. Thanks for any info if you get around to it.
Thank you so much for these videos. I am a tech we work on all makes all models. And anytime I have Ford issues. I always look for your videos. You helped a lot during the chains on the last 5.4 I did. Keep up the good work !
In hind sight , the engine does have 100,000 miles on it and it about that time for a timing chain . Still, there is a lot going on under that cover. Your customer is fortunate to have found you. I can also see why ford wants you to run light weight oil in that engine. Lubrication is a must as well as matiance. You do nice work. Thanks again.
Brother you are so detail, you are a master teacher for real, I will do it to my truck that is sound loud, iam not mechanic but I got this vid and I will do exact as you teach here. God bless you and your family, in Jesus name amen
Hey now! aRE YOU me? I have the same truck and so far so good for me too,...I get a rattle about once a month maybe less! but I am watching this getting ready for the worst!
70carlton I had this my 2011 f150 eco boost 1 time which lasted 1-2 sec so I thought I added small can of wynns engine tune up for cleaning lifters and rings to the oil , I was thinking the problem was tensioner either sticky or not enough oil getting to it fast enough . I did add the wynns engine tune up ran the engine for several 15 min intervals left it over night ran again 15 to warm up no noise changed the oil and filter with good quality synthetic 5-30 and 6 oz motor kote no more rattle .
Thanks for the Video's, My dad and I are following them and find them very helpful. Turns out both fords we own needed to change the Chains and we did not want to pay a garage a small fortune in our area. Lifesaver!
just finished part 1. Absolutely amazing content! Blown away by the thoroughness and quality. Looking to buy a used 3.5 eco this weekend and wanted to know if I can do this under the shade of a tree. Thanks for this amazing work
About to do my 11 ecoboost. 226k km Thanks for the video, so well detailed. I already saved the turbos that had seized wastegates. Removed the hot side of the turbo. Removed the wastegate flapper, cleaned everything really well and welded that tab back on for the wastegate actuator. Its been working great, until about two months ago… (when I started having my current issue which is the timing chain)
Awesome job! Man you are good! That coolant tube under the timing cover is what Ford engineering has now suggested needs replaced ...as well as the water pump and o rings, gaskets etc...for the persistent leak on my 2018 Raptor ecoboost...this will be try #3 at the dealer.. really not too confident in these motors now.. I think it's back to a 5.0 or 5.2 voodoo engine for me after watching this video, cuz I don't have your knowledge or skill. Thank you for the video
Thank you for pointing out all the details that most people take for granted what a complicated process for a water pump.do it wrong and the engine will be junk thanks again
Have you considered creating a video showing the behind the scenes organization that you do on a major project like this? It'd be great to see how you keep bolts organized with parts, etc. Excellent video series that I hope to never need!
Mr. Makuloco Sir, thanks for the great video, everything you do is so important for folk that want to save money and learn how learn to fix their own vehicle. Again Thanks Respectfully; Andy
Any chance Ford covers this out of warranty? Seems like a total design flaw on their part timing chains should not be stretching enough to cause this at such low mileage.....
Great video! very detailed! you do a fantastic job! and your new shop is incredible. You really know Ford engines extremely well! Stunning job! love it!!
Have you ever found metal shavings in packed in the vct solenoid screens? I'm working on a 2011 3.5 eco, the chain was still intact but the sprockets were worn, all that metal went past the oil pickup, filter and packed up the vct solenoids so i pulled the cam bearing caps. Sure enough the cams and bearing caps were damaged I'm sure the rods and mains are damaged as well. A stretched timing chain has turned into my buddy needing a new engine. 115,000 miles oil changes every 3,000 miles with ford oil and filter. This is a heads up to people doing this job. CHECK those vct solenoids for metal shavings.
This engine is pretty clean and well maintained, why it has stretched timing chain ! look at the cam loops, no single scratch. Even those Chevy V6 engines.
Thank you so much for making all these timing chain videos. I have actually used it to show how to get to the oil pump, as mine went bad, and your videos are SO detailed and amazing. Again thank you so much man. I do have one question, what happens when the timing marks don’t line up and I can’t get the cam shaft tool on?
Very well made video Thank you !! As for timing cover sealant, I have used Dirko bond (German sealant) b4 on Porsche, Audi, BMW, ect. Seems to work fine and have no issues
I had mine replaced by the dealer at 70,000 Km's. I'm now at 102,000 Km's and it just started with the rattle again!! Why would this happen again?? I thought the last TSB was a permanent fix? Will this just continue to happen if I get it fixed again? It's a 2011 F150 3.5 ecoboost and has always been serviced at the dealer. Thanks for any and all help! Great video! Thank you for taking the time to make it!
Hi, I would ask the dealer if they replaced the van phasers and the secondary chains/ tensioners. If you just go in and replace the main chain it can possible happen again.
At 41:57 the seal that you slide on. In Part 4 you show the same seal and you're putting it in the timing cover plate. I think you have to put this seal in the cover and slide the seal on with the cover plate. That's what I had to do.
If you are rebuilding the timing chain on this engine, I highly recommend to change the water pump, because if that crap fail ( which is often) you can go back and take the whole engine apart and if lucky, you might be able to save it
Question i hope can be answered. On my crank sproket, it only lines up at the 2 o'clock postion when my phasers are lined up like the video. I've turned it over several times, but when phraser dots are like the video the crank sproket dot is 2 o'clock postion. Any thoughts
Replacing the water pump. I am trying to align my camshaft pulleys and crankshaft sprocket to the proper position. My left camshaft pulley is close to being in the correct position, my right is way off. Now I can't turn the crankshaft any further. I am in a bind because now I feel like I have completely messed up my engine timing and the crankshaft bolt won't turn anymore, and I am afraid to force it in fear of breaking the bolt. Do you have any guidance on how to remedy this.
ok i know this is an old video but please i need help, my timing chain slipped and i have no idea where i should line the crank timing mark and the cam timing marks before i install a new chain, Does it matter as long as the chain marks line up with the gear marks?
How much does this job cost. I need my 3.5 done I'm just worried about it not getting done and cleaned up right. Were the mechanic trying to skip doing something because they're lazy and then charging me for it I've actually had that done to me before.
What is the book time for this repair? I usually don't work on smaller trucks like these but I have a client who wants it done. How many hours does it take you?
Good day Sr, I got a question for you I have a 2013 Ford 150 3.5 ecoobost with bad engine I’m home I have and 2009 ford edge for a customer….. never come back long story .. the edge have on it a 3.5 engine that’s same engine ?
I want to go back to the engine they had in the 60s anybody could work on it you needed a bare minimum in tools and they would run forever! All this plastic engine parts and exotic parts and specialty tools!
Your the best. God is really using you with your amazing gift of teaching. Jesus Loves you, and I pray for blessings over your business in Jesus's name.
@fordtechmakuloco I just had my 2012 3.5 done.. all vcts, phasers, guides chains were you replaced. after a short drive home 30 miles from the shop it jumped timing..we dont see clear conclusive evidence that is hit a rod but we do see tiny mark that it may have hit a rod on the piston but my question to you is why did it jump timing, did one of the new components fail?
At least the phasors are pinned to the cams. Better than the 4.0L S-O-H-C. Probably, the reason there isn't much in the Aftermarket area is that this engine is strained to near its mechanical and strength limit. Just a thought.
I have the duratech 3.5 Taurus. I am taking the right-side phasers off in order to replace that upper chain guide. This secondary tensioner pushes down fairly easily. I noticed, just while checking things out that the left side secondary tensioner won't push down at all🤔. Does this mean that tensioner is shot? I wasn't planning to do anything to that side.
What I found out on the secondary chain tensioner, on the the left side of the engine, I seen that it wasn't pushing up on the chain, could you verify this process for replacing them. I took the one that I felt it was bad, I began to compress it about 3 times, and it released to full tension. My concern was I put both left and right tensioner new and once I pulled the plastic tab out they didn't spring up to full tension. I am hoping that I can remove the valve covers and plunge them down and get them to release to full tension. Was wondering if you have seen this problem?
I have a 2015 Lincoln Navigator 3.5 ecoboost. Will the listed parts apply to my engine too? Thanks a million! I’ve been watching your videos for years! You helped me with my 2005 F150 5.4 3v!!!
So I had a couple sounds when I tried to get crankshaft bolt off . I stopped immediately. I had the cam holding tools In. When I got the front cover off I saw my phasers are in the correct position with cam holding tools but my crankshaft mark is in the 2oclock position, not the four or five like you state . Is this the sound that was made and how do I fix this ?
My question is do I really need to change the timing chain etc? I have the clatter chatter on startup for about 10 to 15 seconds. But I don't have any codes. 2013 with 230,000 miles.
Is it worthwhile to pull the condenser and radiator so you can sit on a stool facing the motor to do all the timing chaing work? You're 2 hours into this and my back is aching just watching it! and you know exactly what you're doing!!
Great video!!!! Very helpful. I was wondering where to get a complete oem timing chain kit(camphasers, water pump, chain, guides, etc.)? Or product that is equivalent. Thank you
How tight are the bolts? I am working on one and I'm worried about breaking the bolts or camshafts. Breaker bar and wrench on the camshaft but don't wanna budge
Thank you for the video. I have a bad water pump on a 2012 MKT its been 5 months nobody wants to work on it. not even the dealer they offered me a new engine for $9k instead...I'm at the point where I want to fix it myself. but the engine locked up when water pump went out because it was running on highway when it happened. can i still change it the water pump even though the engine locked up or was any other critical damage?... Thank you in advance for any experienced input.
Ever have issues with the idler sprocket, what do you look for on them? I’m doing the timing on a 3.5 right now and the idler sprocket has just a barely noticeable amount of up and down / in and out. Wondering if that’s normal or should I replace it? Thanks!
My cam holding tool don't line up.. the cams are not phased correctly, what could be the issue?.. should I remove the phaser then line up the cams with the tool
Found out the cam tool I bought on Amazon doesn't fit . It's machined a little to tight to go on . Just a heads up for anyone else that encounters this
I had my mechanic do a timing job and then he calls me back to tell me i need a new engine bc he hears it knocking. Can someone tell me what went wrong
Hello. Question for you. I have a Transit 250 with ecoboost 3.5. It has 40,000 miles, it just started this gurgley whine from the drivers side on acceleration. It sounds kind of like a old VW bug. Have you ever ran accrossed this turbo noise. Sounds like turbo is partially under water.
I know this is an old video, but hopefully you will reply. Why didn't you replace the 2 small upper chains that go on the phasers? Wouldn't they age the same as the main chain?
I love your videos! I am preparing to tear apart a 2017 Ford mustang 5.0 and I was wondering if you have any links or help with a guide on the proper timing procedure?
Is it normal for the HPFP roller tappet to have that scoring around the circumference? Looks like poor heat treatment of the roller material from the factory.
That timing chain appears to be very robust. It must be the length being so long that even a slight about of wear is magnified over the entire chain length. BMW has motors that fail about 💯 percent, those chains look pathetic compared to these 3.5 chains. Of course on the BMWs the chain is located on the back of the motor, makes it real easy to change once you remove the motor.
