@njboesman I've read about it a lot and I can tell you that the Sonata Turbo is just fueled by a regular 87 octane gasoline. They are able to do that even at high compression ratio and at around 26 psi boost because of the direct injection system programing, they inject the fuel at the latest possible time so there is no pre-ignition or knocking. That would not have been possible for a non-direct injection engine at that boost and so one will have to use high octane rating gasoline.

My cousin slightly modified his Sonata 2.0T with a new intercooler & turbo back exhaust from Nameless Performance & ECU flash from PowerAxel & is doing low 13s on the 1/4 mile. We haven't dyno it yet but the using the TORQUE android app , we're measuring almost 350 hp

The 2.0T engine its known as the "World Engine" from GEMA (Global Engine Manufacture Alliance) some specifications are individual from each partner (Mitsubishi,Chrysler and Hyundai) so expect to find more of this engine family around from 1.8L to 2.4L. from Lancers, Calibers, Sonatas and even Kias If you want to have your sock blown off look up "GEMA Engines" ,so combinations could be possible ,and spare parts area a plenty. Shocker aint it!!

not bad! i drove the non turbo and it was pretty darn quick! i drive a nissan altima 2.4L that is rated at 175hp but on the dyno it makes 141hp and feels slow compared to the new sonata, the turbo sonata must feel very fast at 234hp, maybe my next car next year. :) the 34mpg on a turbo sedan is too good to pass up!

nevermind, found that infact they Did and have always offered this engine option! only a few changes have been made to it turbo,intercooler tuning etc. main diff between it and sonata 2.0t is sonata gets direct injection genisis still gets port injection. if anything i'd like to see a genisis 3.8v6 or their 5.0v8 in the sonata :D

@thejoebates are you for real? 200hp & 274hp are @ the crank, not the wheels AND when making a pull you only use 1 gear to go throu the rpm range. Dont post if you dont know what your talking about!

you can tell which is the turbo and which is the N/A from how fast the speedometer moves to the rpm, it's really cool

@JUNOMAN If I'm not mistaken, EPA and SAE standards test at the engine itself, dyno tests through the wheels so some power is lost through the drivetrain.

@Corkoth55 shoot, I only had the base model and was impressed. So I purposely drove it to a dealer and took a 2.0T for a spin. Keep in mind I do drive performance cars. Not Corvettes or anything like that. But I own a 90 Eclipse and I know how a turbo car should feel. And.. all things considered, the car is awesome and gets very very good fuel economy, for its size, cost and purpose. Me and my aunt took it on a 1000mile trip and she is going to purchase one this weekend. She liked it so much.

@0ejmusik0 Chevy opted to have two variations of the V8 in the Camaro5. 405hp w/ the Automatic version and 426hp w/ the manual. Wheel or brake hp, I'm not aware of it. The Z28 will make about 556hp same as the CTS-V.

@NigguhJason I cannot speak on terms of engineering or mechanics. I have been inside of the current Sonata as well as Camry. I tell you for the Camry has plastics that are VERY cheap, the Sonata has higher quality materials on the dash as well as much tighter gaps. The seats are much more comfortable and are padded more generously than in the Camry. I don't think higher price correlates to "higher quality" there, but definitely for a Camry which costs more, that CERTAINLY isn't the case.

@rickslick730 actually not the bmw wasn't new and he had to pay for the genesis ... the guy was about tu buy a brand new 7 series and then decided just for fun to go take a look at the genesis (hyundai dealer is on the other side of the road lol) he took the genesis for a spin and loved it .. he bought a car with the same equipment, that is as comfortable, as powerful and that costs 3 times less to maintant .. and that, for 1/3 the price

@VulgarBoyzz Twin scroll turbos are not anything new; nor are they the same thing as Porsche variable geometry turbos. Manufacturers like Mazda have been using them since the 80s, and you'll find twin scroll turbines on just about anything with a turbo these days. It's simply a divided turbine housing (exhaust side), which helps the turbo spool up quicker & reduce the turbo-lag feeling.

There's talk of Camaro getting a direct injection V8 which could see a raise from 405 to 450 hp and a 10% torque increase.

Strongly considering trading in my 6-cyl 2006 Sonata for a turbo. I do have to say, I like the throatier sound that comes from the non-turbo. That said though, the turbo-4 has more power and better mileage than my 6.

I have a 2011 Hyundai SE Sonata Turbo. I had a 2007 Passat Turbo (200-hp) before that, and a 2005 Nissan Altima SE 3.5 V6 (250-hp)before that. All had auto trannies. The Hyundai is faster and has more power than the 2005 Altima V6! Both were faster than the Passat. I think the Hyundai handles better than the Passat, which handled better than the Altima. The Altima and Passat got 30 mpg on the highway on 92 octane. The Hyundai has less than 3K miles on it at 30 mpg, but on 87 octane gas.

@biyorkman Hm, the exact original pronunciation of hyundai is no starts with hyoon and hun, and no ends with dai. Coz there's no english capital, exactly no nouns in english. In korean alphabet, e.g, they have nouns of a=ㅏ, e=ㅔ, i=ㅣ, o=ㅗ, u=ㅜ as same as english, but the problem is they have more nouns like ㅑ=ya, ㅕ=yeo(=yu), ㅛ=yo, ㅠ=yoo(=you=yu) like a long j sound in dictionaries, and ㅡ=no english, and they have another specific nouns gethered from sperate two nouns.

Turbo on the dyno with half a tank of gas. The NA on there with full tank of gas. I wonder which one they had more fun with...

i wonder if hyundai is putting in governors in their new cars now, because older models did not have them. They were all limited by drag or if you add enough power by gears. My Tiburon runs out of gear at 159 mph, now that stock Hyundai have enough power to go pass 150 they might

@mellowdalyricist The numbers are quite good for horsepower at the wheels. Remember manufactures state horsepower numbers from the flywheel without any drive train connected to the engine.

@NigguhJason i know a co worker hat had money to buy a VW Passat but bought the Sonata because she liked the design, warranty and features that came with it, on average, a Passage is more expensive that the Accord and Camry which are all in the Sonata class

@T1Oracle - I would give you the edge, but only at sea level :-) . Supercharged cars always perform better in less air. Another aspect is gearing. I had a '68 built 302 Mustang that dynoed at 210 hp at the rear wheels, and ran 13.5 seconds in the quarter (12.9s on Nitrous), but it had a 4.62 final drive ratio. It seems the Hyundai has a final drive of 2.885! Yours appears to be 3.81. I loved my Nissan, which had a way better exhaust note than the Hyundai, and I thought it was pretty fast.

I thought i read that the new motor thats now in the 2.0t had a different turbo to what used to be in it. Thats nice that the block shares EVO DNA. I think it would be very stressful to pull 270hp out of the same turbo that was putting out 200hp

If I were to pick between the Hyundai Sonata and the Buick Regal, I'd definitely take the Sonata, because it is more powerful, more spacious interior, fuel efficient, and more affordable than a wacky Buick Regal. Buick Regal is mainly for elderly people, or Senior citizens; that's why they are less powerful and slow. the Regal's only strong point is handling.

I'm pretty sure the Gen Coupe is quicker b/c of the better traction on launches. Especially if you get the R Spec with the LSD. The first thing i'd do if I got a Coupe was take the back seats out! Shits useless anyway!

Huh. So... the Hyundai Sonata's 2.0T turbocharged inline-4 gets about 30 more hp and tq than the Hyundai Genesis Coupe 2.0T? I wonder how the hell that happened, and I also wonder why they haven't placed that set-up in their "poor man's" sports car...

Hyundai is not pronounced in HONDAY. n is put on Hu of Human, and it is pronounced die following it.

@biyorkman So, in brief, 현대=Hyundai ==> ㅎ=H, ㅕ=YU(=yeo)[not this yu(=yoo)], ㄴ=N, ㄷ=D, ㅐ=AI . coz of this two nouns of ㅕ,ㅐ. As I mentioned, a=ㅏ i=ㅣSo, when we add these two of a=ㅏand i=ㅣ, that can be "ai" in english with separate pronounciation, but that can't be ㅏㅣ seperately but should be ㅐin another one noun in korean.ㅏㅣ can be ai but if we add those two of ㅏㅣ, there comes out another different one noun of sound between a i, it sounds mid-pronounciation between a and i in english. dizzy? LOL

@nnr3 Ya i know. Its really sad that they feel the need to protect the sales of the 3.8 Gen Coupe by detuning the 2.0T model to the point of almost being useless. I'd rather they get rid of the 3.8 and beef up the 2.0 to go head to head with the 370/G37. Its obvious they know how to get the power out of the engine.

@davidpaulin good for him, but iv been in both cars and drove them, i know some one that have fully loaded genesis v8 2009, and some one that own a 2010 BMW 750,the BMW had a better fit and finish and drove better then the gen to me , the genesis was nice for a upscale Hyundai, but no were near the BMW, but at the end of the day!! ill sick with my 09 fully loaded honda accord v6

@biyorkman You need to ask the exact pronounciation to one of Koreans, coz it's pronoun in grammar, not from english. They had to make english version with same sound, but they decided to use their hyundai spell based on their korean alphabet system. Actually Korean language is one of the best scientific languages in the world. Many scientist addmited it without douts when they could have a little knowledge of their systems. They type the computer keyboard fastest with convenience in the world.

@biyorkman and they are the best in the field of IT. They download 700mb of movies within about 20 sec. A..there's one missing, the conclusion is we need to pronounciate hyundai like "HYEON DE or DAE" like when we say "daewoo" company, this dae sound in english. not hyoon, hun, haiyoon, die, or dai in pronounciation. Without knowledges of the most unique country for over 3000 years of the world can't be understandable for english society. LOL. With my knowlede, they are not Korea, exactly Corea

@VulgarBoyzz WTF are you talking about. Every car manufacturer right now uses a twin scroll. VW with thier old 2.0TFSI and their newer 2.0T, GM with their HHR, Solstice, Buick Regal, COBALT SS, Sky redline. There is nothing at all special about a twin scroll buddy, you guys really need to chill. The Sonata is a very nice car but please don't dilude yourselves into thinking it's some super breakthrough.
