Nice job Nix… I did mine after an engine overheat about a year ago, had a lot to do compared to yours and unfortunately I didn’t upload the videos being a first time learning everything from RU-vid so thanks a lot for posting these out here, helps a lot of DIY enthusiasts projects going. Thought I should take on as a side hustle job buying, fixing and eventually selling after all the tools and equipments I had to accumulate to do my 2015 V6 3.0 Rangerover.

Thanks for the series of videos on this make/model & issue. I've been following some of the auctions with the goal of trying to pickup one of these that needs work. But I'd also like to stay within a reasonable price/value when finished so that I don't find myself too far upside down on what it's worth when completed. Based on your experience, what would you say your max investment would be on a 2014-2016 LWB Autobiography with 40k to 75k on the odometer, which may need an entire engine? Just referring to the auction price and not including any repairs. Thanks in advance for any info you can share, and thanks again for the detailed repair process! Best wishes!

Hi Nick, I have a big question for you. I need help in replacing the motor from my 2014 Range Rover Sport L494. I got a used motor from a 2011 Range Rover Sport L320. According to my knowledge the motor is pretty much the same however, the supercharger and the upper, right and left, timing covers will be used from the previous blow motor. That is because the 2014 onwards supercharger had an electric actuator on the top of the supercharger and both the timing covers have different cam solenoids with different connectors. First of all will this swap work and Is there anything else that I should know which needs to be changed before hand, other than the timing of course, on the old engine? Also is the crankshaft position sensor the same because the L494 has a start/stop feature, does it require a different Crank sensor? And I’ll replace the timing components before putting the engine inside the L494. I think the 2014 one uses a different starter. Also will the ACE pump be bolted in the same place where the power steering pump goes on the L320’s engine?
@NiXFiX
@NiXFiX 9 месяцев назад
Man you are making this hard on yourself. I don't know the answer to a lot of your questions (if the ACE pump will bolt up, crank position sensor differences, etc.) I think you're saying that your 2011 engine came from a supercharged vehicle. If not, one HUGE difference between the naturally aspirated and supercharged engines is the camshafts and cam followers/buckets.

Again, thanks so much for doing these vids. Great resource! Quick question... Did you replace the conrod bolts for the piston you replaced? If so, where did you source it from and do you have a part number?

You're welcome. I did not replace the connecting rod bolts.

If you had the choice between a 2009 sport supercharged 4.2 in good shape and a 2011 sport supercharged 5.0 in good shape but needs the timing chains done. Which would it be.
@NiXFiX

Sorry for the delay in response. I would pick the 2011 but only because I am very familiar with these engines.

Do you have any long-term feedback on the non-OE timing parts you have used? Looks like the MOCA kit you linked in your description is actually out of stock. Do you have many miles on the ones you installed? Do the tensioners have a "ratchet" mechanism like the OE ones? Have you used either the Bapmic or URO Parts tensioners?
@NiXFiX
@NiXFiX 4 месяца назад
The MOCA kit feels like quality parts to me. Everything from the packaging to the fit and feel of the parts is good. Yes, they ratchet. Any tensioner in these vehicles that didn't ratchet would cause almost immediate failure. I've only used MOCA and OEM, so I haven't used bampic or URO. I have a range rover in the current fleet and the miles aren't what I would call long term, but there is 3,000 miles on it post surgery with the MOCA kit.

Hey, great video, what attachment points did you use to lift the engine? Thank you
@NiXFiX
@NiXFiX 3 месяца назад
Man, if I could remember I'd totally tell you. I think I put in a head bolt toward the rear of the engine on the driver side and a bolt in a belt idler pulley on the passenger side upper timing cover. Again, can't remember 100%.

@NiXFiX
@NiXFiX Год назад
@@keithmcdaniel2478 I got the light off and it appears to be fixed without using the JLR software (SDD or other). What I did was fill the reservoir almost to the top. Then I cracked the two bleed screws (9mm) on the rear control arm as well as the two bleed screws on the front control arm (9mm). Then I started the engine (so the pump would run). As fluid drained out of the bleed screws I kept topping the reservoir off every minute or so. Never let it run dry. Once the rear bleed screws were a solid stream, I closed them. Then, once the front bleed screws were a solid stream, I closed them. Topped off the reservoir to the max line. Took it for a drive and did hard cornering figure 8’s in a large parking lot. Topped off reservoir again. That’s it. The light is off and it feels normal. Time will tell but I think it is fixed.

Where did you learn to rebuild an engine on land rover or it doesn't matter the engine or you followed an engine rebuild repair manual and know the torque specs im thinking of buy a l322 supercharged range and people talk about the timing failure guides need to be updated and maybe this why l322 with supercharged are cheap
@NiXFiX
@NiXFiX 6 месяцев назад
I've worked on engines for years. At their core, with the exception of rotary engines, they are the same: Pistons go up and down on a crankshaft and cams turn. I'm self taught out of pure desire to fix engines. I don't recommend a Range Rover as your first engine rebuild. They are challenging compared to say, a GM LS engine.

Hey Nick. It’s me again. I just finished the repair, but still not running correctly. I have codes P0014, P0346, & P0391. It’s running better than it was, but any help would be Greatly appreciated.
@NiXFiX
@NiXFiX 4 месяца назад
You've got a problem with bank 2 timing. P0346 is intake cam position bank 2. P0391 is exhaust cam bank 2. Bank 2 is right hand side (passenger side in the USA). Do you have a scan tool that can read live data? Need to see degrees of cam while running compared to bank 1. Also, make sure you tightened 8mm bolt ground on upper timing cover.
@earltaylor
@earltaylor 4 месяца назад
@@NiXFiX Thank you so much again. I do have a scan tool, but not that advanced on how to do live data. I’ll check the ground tomorrow. Is the worse case scenario that I’d have to retime the passenger side?

@@NiXFiXah, i'm in the southeast. Out of curiosity, how long would you say this project took? Like 50 hours? You seem extremely knowledgeable, respect man
@NiXFiX
@NiXFiX Год назад
@@ExpatJoel thanks for the kind words. 41 hours. Would've been significantly less if I didn't have to replace the piston. As far as how I learned, just pure desire to fix. I've always worked on cars since age 16. Started engine rebuilds/repair over a decade ago and found the money is in European cars. Started with VW/Audi, them BMW, then Porsche, and now I've been doing a lot of Jaguar /Land Rover stuff. With any internal combustion engine, the basic design is all the same, just various differences from manufacturer to manufacturer.

@@NiXFiX gotcha, thanks for the reply. Where do you even find these mechanically totaled rovers? How much was this one if you don't mind me asking? Is this profitable ? it's a hobby of mine as well, so I'm not even looking to make much money, I just don't wanna go bankrupt fixing these range rovers up. I've already spent a significant amount of money on the two that I own
