Hello guys, after many requests about doing an in depth tour on my own car, I finally got a chance to film it. She is a 2012 BMW 116i F20 in Alpine white. This car is a base Russian specked car, which means it doesn't have things like Idrive. which is a shame.

Cheers for this Matt. I've learned quite a bit from your presentation. I have been given an immaculate 2009 116i 5 door with a multitude of bells and whistles, cameras, digital gadgets and widgets added - imported from Japan! I hardly know where to start but I'm slowly getting there. At least I can start, drive and stop it lol. It is SUCH a pretty car. The front grill reminds me of a pair of sunglasses, so darn sporty. And that looong front bonnet gives a sense of speeding into the wind. Except that I only use it for shopping, going to the local bridge club and babysitting my grandson. I figure it could well become a classic in the future. Mine is electric blue with purple LED lights under each door handle. Your model looks super fine in Alpine White - it brings to mind an elegant gentleman with hidden prowess. Well, enough of my ramblings, I'm off to look under the hood to figure out where to put the oil, water and brake fluid, thank the lord for the internet. My mum told me long ago that all cars need these things. A wise woman indeed. Except that she asked me a very odd question when I was about 25. I had learned to play guitar, then she in turn learned to play it. She asked me what the difference was between my string (acoustic) guitar and an electric guitar! I thought that the answer was quite self evident but it just goes to show that we individually hold little pieces of information that can be revelations to the uninformed. And thus it is with you Matt, I appreciate your insights. One wonders if you have kept your little gem...

I currently have a six speed automatic 2007 BMW 1 Series (E81). Having seen so many F20/F21 videos, this is by far the most in-depth and informative one from an end user's point of view. I'm looking to get an F20 in 2020 and this is helping me decide, a lot. Thank you.

Farhan Sheikh thank you so much for your message :D. It means a lot to hear some feedback :) I really do like my car, even thou it’s a very basic one. 2020 will be a good time to buy a f20 1 series since the F40 will be on the scene, which mean values may drop, but since the next gen won’t be available in rwd the prices could stay the same. It’s hard to tell. I have made some diy videos based on this car too, should you need to do any work :) take care and good luck :)

Wow, the F20 is a very special hatch back indeed especially as it's rear wheel drive. I wouldn't mind throwing some money at the Zenon headlights. I also enjoy looking at long bonnet, all in one bumper and front towing eye!!! Love the ventilated disc brakes as well.

Yeah, those hypocrites, it's hard to trust them after years of saying that rear wheel drive is the gold standard of wheel drive options and then suddenly switching to front wheel drive with out even attempting to justify it!!! I'd like to talk about it more but I'm actually getting angry thinking about how BMW betrayed my trust and it's hard to know how to believe in what they stand for any more!!!

kc4ril they did a lot of market research of people who buy these cars. Many bmw drivers these days don’t know that bmw are red and even know what rwd means. So bmw must think why are we spending lots of money making rwd hatch backs, when it’s the badge they are after.

Thanks for the vid. I am looking to buy a 2013 same spec but manual gearbox so this was useful information. I am also interested in any technical DIY vids for basis home maintenance like brakes, air filters etc. Regards, Adam.

Hey :) thanks for the message. I am very glad that you found this video useful. Which country do you live in? I really wish mine had the stuff the British cars had standard :) A manual would be great and are becoming a dying breed :) I will be doing some more f20/F21 DIY videos soon, the weather here in Moscow has slowed me down a little :) Take care ps Also if you struggle to find a video on a DIY job there is a cool site called www.newtis.info/ which is similar to what the dealers use :)

I added a small Intel server fan on the right side of bonnet towards the Fuse box. Took out she small rubber and it fits on top of the wire harness. This extracts the heat from the engine bay

Chetan Jiva that’s a brilliant idea!!! I do get concerned at times with the heat in the engine bay. It’s my first car with a turbo :)

I don't really want to buy a 1 series I'm watching because I like your reviews. I currently own a 1998 Alpina B10 V8 E39 (number 404) a 1996 BMW M3 E36 and a 2000 BMW Z3 M Roadster E36/7 I think. I have restored the alpina it was very rusty and needed a full respray it's mostly finished only needs a respray

Thank you for taking the time in watching my reviews! I really apricate it :) Its my first BMW 1 series, which my wife bought for my birthday :) Its ideal for Moscow with parking etc. I have done 2 POV videos in the past, where I am talking about my past BMWs and my fathers. I really love the B10! Oh a Jet black one with lotus white leather! Perfection. I think I said this in another post, but while my dad had has P38, he wanted to change it. He looked at a green/silver one with dark green leather seats. He ended up buying a ac Schnitzer M5 individual E39 X reg. Its was pearlescent oxford green 2 with white leather seats. He has a E32 B12 back in the early 90s thou. I miss it very much :)

I have the same year model but sportline. There is an updated timing chain tensioner which is 2mm longer. Does this engine have timing chain problems?

Chetan Jiva I haven’t heard of any issues with the n13 and timing chains. I shall keep a listen out. What mileage has your car done. I think mines about the 37000km mark.

Can I use Engen 5w40 extreme ll01 oil for service or use the more expensive bmw ll01?

Chetan Jiva hey buddy. The oil I use in my car is the Castrol edge 0W30 (ll01). The only reason I use this oil is because it has a tag in the engine bay from BMW saying what oil was last used (bare in mind I live in Moscow where the temp can vary quite a bit). It seems on some sites that 5w30 and 5w40 are the recommended viscosity :) I’d personally would go with BMWs own brand thou, and that’s what I will do when I do my next oil service. I have just filmed a oil change on my N13, which I need to edit :)

I don't think so, I think all the UK cars have alloys. I quite like the hubcaps too. Well they have grown on me. My car doesn't even have idrive lol :)

Would you know why we get a drive chain error message - “possible to continue your journey . Check service” . Anything that can be reset of course apart from seeing a mechanic for engine faults

Hey, I have made a video on this topic :) there are so many things that can bring up this fault. On my car, it was my fault, as I let the fuel get to low, and the fuel in the bottom of a fuel tank isn’t that nice. When I had this fault, I turned my engine off and on and it started perfectly.

lovedisshitrazzer hey, I will check it out tonorrow. I don’t think mine does. I think some people can add it to the car through coding it in, but I rarely drive it in sports mode. I used to drive it in eco mode but it’s to sluggish. Comfort is the most ideal with the weather we have in Moscow. I know sports plus does turn off the traction control which is fun. Haha :)

Sorry for the late reply. :) I will GUESS it’s because mine doesn’t have the idrive. It only chimes on mine if there is an issue. I looked at other start videos and notice they All had idrive :) when I know for sure I’ll reply again :) thank you and take care :)

At the moment I can only film cars I own, rent or ones that belong to my friends :) apparently it’s hard to buy a decent conditioned car in Moscow, so when my wife’s friend was selling hers with low miles for a good price, we had to have it. Lol. I hope I can film a better spec one soon :) I crave I drive :)

lovedisshitrazzer hey, when the car is locked the fuel door is too :) I believe that newer cars have a special system in place which stops people being able to get the fuel out the old fashion way :)

Hey, as you may know, my bmw is a very basic model, it doesn’t even have an alarm, so my car has been pretty reliable. Saying that there are a few issues which i need to look into. When I start the car sometimes she sounds like she is miss firing. I am hoping it’s bad fuel issue. Another issue is the passenger window sometimes doesn’t go up when I hold down the close button. I have personally found that, the BMWs that aren’t looked after properly are the unreliable ones. This car handles nicely around the city streets and I loved driving it after driving the bigger x5. Saying that I wish I had the chance to drive it on some windy roads like I was able to when I lived in England with all my past 10 BMWs. Performance, she is quick for the size of the engine, but delivers it in a different way. My brother has a 2 litre mk2.5 focus and my car feels quicker in my opinion. I’m sorry I can’t give an exact basic answer. Take care :)

mattsbeamer Great dude! How is your Car nos Days? I‘m thinking about buying a 2011. With 58000 km on it, a pretty good deal. But I’m kinda worried because I live in the Caribbean and here parts for German cars are really expensive. Have you gotten any problems with it? I’d really appreciate your comment.
