Hello everyone hope that I find you well. Today we are going to be replacing a defective Steering Coupler on my 2013 KIA SOUL. hope you enjoy and find this of some use and thanks for watching. STEERING COUPLER www.amazon.com...
Appreciate it! This video helped me build confidence and was very helpful. I dropped steering column, pinned the coupler, replaced it, and but all back together. Pretty straight forward video. It sure saved me couple hundreds at the mechanic. $7 piece and about 2hrs. Car running and turning like new. Thank you very much!
Years later this is golden!!! Have a 2.0 kia soul 2013 and omg does it rock like theres nothing left. Like driving or moving the sterring wheel in general. Make that fucking noise its been driving me nuts for 2 years. Finaly about to get it replaced 😢 saw this video and going to do it Thursday!! Cant wait praying for this out come it shakes so bad 😂
Thank you! I told my husband about this problem.. this video sure helped us!! Found the part at Oreilly in stock. $14.99 but worth fixing it today. Thanks again for this video!
Thank you so much! I plan on getting this done soon and you're the only video I could find that was helpful! I have a 2012base 6 speed so I hope it's the same!
Thanks for watching, should be the same since its only a year apart. Wont be that difficult as one might think and the parts are very inexpensive. Good luck and stay safe.👍🏽✌🏽
@@solisapaul I just finished it! You weren't kidding on that back 14 mm bolt, that's a huge pain in the ass, but it drive great! Thanks for everything!
Great video, but more complicated on my Kia Soul as it’s the inferno 1.6 crdi model inside my power steering there are wiring connectors that sits at the base of motor connects into a silver box.very difficult job.be very careful on the Kia Soul inferno the on with the dragon decal on it,same as burner model.
My 2013 Kia Cerato has this problem and I found your video really helpful. I can't fix it myself, and my mechanic told me it was a $30 part with $800-$1000 labour charge. He suggested I ask KIA because maybe they can do it for less. I guess I understand why now. Thanks.
I’m glad you found my video as well, as you may or may not know some KIA models were recalled for this issue and it is a free fix via KIA dealership. Usually they will send out a mailed letter to the owners of these particular vehicles if you have not received that information I would call the dealership to see if your vehicle can be done for free as I said for (recall). As for mechanics unfortunately there’s real good honest mechanics but then there’s also not unfortunately. I truly wish you could have someone do it for you it truly is a somewhat simple fix and the part is only about five bucks on Amazon. I wish you the best stay safe.👍🏽✌🏽
Hi Casp72, can I ask for advice - I got the coupler cog part replaced which is all great (AU$515); but when I drove away I realised my turn indicator lights no longer turn off once I have turned a corner, the Kia service place is saying that it is not their fault because they replaced coupler link from underneath, not by taking steering column down. Is this possible? I have a 2012 Kia Cerato. I am struggling with lack of knowledge. All I know is my indicators worked when I went in, but was not when I left and I think they should fix it.
@@katee4190 sorry to hear you’re having trouble in my honest opinion I would have to say because of the fact that it was not acting up prior to taking your vehicle in it must be some thing they did perhaps wiring wasn’t connected correctly or didn’t connect securely. If you can find someone to help you it would not hurt to take the column housing off should only consist of two screws and have a glance of the wiring just to make sure everything is properly seated. (STEERING COLUMN BODY)Sorry for the late response been very busy and I truly hope this helps you stay safe.👍🏽✌🏽
I'm glad you explained about the shake at speed because I thought the car needed and alignment. Also I've noticed in my years of working on cars that the OEM's are sometimes not as good as other manufactured parts.
Pete, I’m glad you found this video useful. And yes I agree sometimes OEM parts are not all that you would expect because they’re cutting expenses. So therefore not supplying the consumer, with the best of the best so to speak. Stay safe and sound.👍🏽✌🏽
Thanks for watching, glad this helped. It’s a little tedious but very doable and not as hard as one would think. Just take your time don’t rush and you will do just fine. Stay safe and good luck.👍🏽✌🏽
No problem and thank you for watching. You’re absolutely correct there was a recall and I could’ve gotten it done but I enjoy doing my own fixes whenever possible and I figured this was not gonna be too bad of a Task to take. Stay safe. 👍🏼✌🏼
Well done- just did mine today- about 40 min job and that included running back and forth to the shop a few times. Only comment I can add is that I did not remove the wiring harness but instead, indexed where the motor aligned and just tuned the power steering motor to give access- mine is an auto trans so not sure if that matters
John Collins Thanks for watching, and good job! I’m so glad this video helped you out dealerships nowadays charge so much for simple fixes you would be amazed.👍🏼✌🏼
Thanks for doing this. I followed your video to replace the failed steering coupler on my GF's 2012 Kia Soul. I wonder if anyone has gotten hurt when this part failed while driving.
any tips on replacing the 14mm Bolt behind steering wheel? Having trouble holding up steering wheel and finding gap, Its about 2cm too low for bolt to fit through.
Found it much easier if you remove the steering column along with steering wheel. Its on a spline and very easy to slide it back in. Now you can get to the 14mm long bolt up inside the dash. Worked for me.
Thank you!!! This is literally my car lol. I recently went to the dealership and they told me it would be $700+ just for that. Definitely doing this myself or getting help from my uncle 🤣
@@solisapaul *Update* I finally got this issue fixed! It was a little bit more to disconnect since I have the exclaim model. One of the screws where the coupling is found was different than the others. The hardest part was that 14mm bolt, but I thank you for going back and showing exactly where it was. It took about 1.5 - 2 hours to finish and helpful that it was me and my uncle doing it together. 😊
@@TheAwkwardbutCutePotato So glad it all worked out , what’s more awesome is knowing that you did this together with the family member. Great job both of you! Stay safe and sound. 👍🏽✌🏽
Just did it thanks very helpful. Only thing I had hard time was the 14mm bolt in the back taking it out and putting it back in. But made it thru thanks
Saludos from Guatemala, im doing that shit at this very moment and that back bolt its a pain aaarrrggggg....but men this video saves going to the shop and money.....thanx
Thank you so much! I was able to fix the problem in no time. I do have one question, for some reason my steering wheel is not aligned with my tires now, do you know how to fix that?? Thank you!
Glad this video helped you thanks for watching as for the steering wheel not aligning with your tires that’s exactly the issue you need to get a front tire alignment usually has to do with your front tie rods. Hope this helps stay safe👍🏽✌🏽
First thanks for this video. My big question! Do you think the engineering could have oriented that freaking motor so you could remove it by dropping straight down or to the side with out having to remove the freaking column.
Honestly, if the engineering team would’ve put more thought and effort into owners servicing the steering rod that leads to the motor and gear shaft, they might’ve possibly come up with something slightly more service friendly. But unfortunately, most automotive companies nowadays, make vehicles almost impossible to work on so that you have to rely on either the dealer you bought it from or a mechanic who most often times are disloyal with the customer. Thanks for watching and stay safe and sound 👍🏽✌🏽
I did this job last night and the steering wheel adjusting lever does not work properly now and also the steering wheel is not centered because the column slid apart. It was difficult for me,,,1st time. Any help on fixing 2 mess ups.??? Please
For the super novice who wants to save money. Could you show or tell us how you got to the 14mm bolt in the back of the steering column and how you took apart the wiring?
On the 2012 Kia Soul there is a hanger at the end of the steering column that will help the column align in the correct position. Then put the 2 nuts on the column toward the front. This will allow you to pull up and down on the steering wheel to get the bolt all the way through. I had to get upside down all the way under the dash with my daughter moving the steering wheel to get the bolt through. Once that bolt was in it took 10 minutes to put it all back together.
So this applies to the 2012 also? I have recently noticed my wife's 2012 Soul+ (53k miles) steering seems a little stiffer than usual. Thought it might be due to power steering fluid needing replacement but then learned there's a power assist motor in the Soul, not a typical hydraulic system. I have also noticed a slight clicking noise so I think I am at the beginning stage of this coupler problem.
@@solisapaul now the challenge is trying to get the dealership to honor the lifetime warranty or a mechanic who can be patient enough to deal with such a delicate tedious task.
You don't have to disconnect that at 12:39, that is part of the box under, and you don't know what that is. WOW. -- I just did this on my Kia soul 2012 and I removed the seat. LISTEN guys: Remove the seat and you will thank me 10 times. It's only 4 bolts and two connectors. I remove all wires and even the little metal box under the column the one you can see at 9:49. then you can remove the back 14 mm bolt easy. I took down the column and the electric motor was in front of me. Nothing bended or broke, and no code or engine light. Car is perfect. The coupler was intact but feel spongy, so I install a new one.
Thank you for the video, but my steering column won't come down like yours to get to the coupler. It's a 2013 just like yours, I removed the 3 bolts, but it won't come down. Was there a 4th bolt or something that won't allow it to come down. Hope you can help me with that. Thank you, Steve
Thanks for watching it should only be the two 12mm bolts up front and the one 14mm bolt in the rear? No other bolts are securing the steering column. The 14mm bolt will need to be completely removed in order to lower the unit. Hope this helps.
So I did this and had no problem but now my airbag light is on and the controls on my steering wheel stopped working. Everything is plugged in solidly. Any ideas where I went wrong?
Just an fyi this part is $1.50 at a Kia dealer if one is close by, auto stores want 13-17 for them. Also my car has a metal box attached to a bracket under the steering column, removing that helped me get to the back bolt, 2 12mm bolt on the right side of a black bracket. I have a soul+ so I think that has something to do with the “upgraded” stereo edit: this video is probably the most comprehensive one available on RU-vid so thank you for that!
I did everything correctly, now there's an airbag light on. Possible clock spring problem? I'd rather not replace the clock spring. Is there something I've missed?
Thanks for watching. Hope you’re well. The only suggestion have is to disconnect power from vehicle (Battery) for about 15 minutes in those 15 minutes make sure at the steering column that the airbag cable is fully connected as well as any other cables you might’ve disconnected in the process. After doing so reconnect power at battery turn on the vehicle and see if issue has been resolved. Aside from this I’m not sure why it would be showing an airbag light. Hope this helps. Stay safe👍🏼✌🏼
What’s up bro. Great job. It pays to be mechanically inclined. Save you some money. I try to work on most my vehicles too. Great video. Thank you for sharing. Stay safe god bless. 😮👍👍👊👊🙏.
Just trying to stay safe brother, thanks for watching. You can definitely save quite a bit of money trying to do these things on your own. Man I really like watching your videos it I’m almost tempted to get me a racer drone as well but man I’ve got too many drones as it is. Any suggestions for something that’s not too low end but not too high end and probably perhaps comes with the goggles? Stay safe and keep those flights coming👍🏼✌🏼
Hello. I have a KIA Picanto from 2010. Would be the steering coupler you shared valid to solve the problem in my car? Thank you very much in advance! :)
Thanks for watching, I could not honestly tell you that it would work because your particular vehicle even though it is a Kia it is not the same model nor the same year the engineering aspects of the steering coupler might be the same however the dimensions might be different. I would suggest researching a little more or contact a Kia dealership and ask them if the two-year models the Kia soul 2013 and your 2010 share the same coupler for the steering column. I truly hope this helps sorry I wasn’t of much help. Stay safe.
Hi, I have a doubt, after the replacement, do I need some kind of calibration of the steering column or the replacement is the only thing needed to solve this problem? Thanks!!!
Thanks for watching no calibration is needed the rubber Coupler is what controls the vibration in the steering column it dampens the vibration. Hope this helps and stay safe.👍🏽✌🏽
WHILE DRIVING When the ESP warning light comes on while you are driving your Kia Soul, do not worry, this is normal, it informs you that the ESP system is working in particular when you take turns. The sensors will send data to the computer which will analyze them and if necessary activate the electronic assistance systems. ON A RECURRING BASIS On the other hand, if the light does not go out without a valid reason, then this implies that you must have the sensors checked, a bulb may have burned out. Consequently, the mechanism informs you that the computer is no longer receiving the data necessary to start the ESP. Hope this helps. Thanks for watching.
I have the same problem with my 2010 kia soul just do a scan to your car and the eps light gone, that happens because the computer detects that you put a new piece on the car.
Thanks for watching as I demonstrated in the video if yours is doing the exact same thing and making the exact same sound more than likely this is the issue. Hopefully you can get the Coupler and perform the repair it’s not as hard as one would think it’s just a little tedious but overall simple. Hope this helps you and good luck.👍🏽✌🏽
Just a heads up... Kia updated the warranty on this part from 5 yrs 60k MI to 10 yrs unlimited miles and will fix it for free under said warranty. If your car is 2013 or newer you're covered.
Thanks for watching and that is a very good question my assumption is that the material that was used on the original OEM coupler was perhaps faulty which led to premature failure. I’m sure these couplers we’re not meant to wear out at all again I believe it was just a bad batch so to speak.
@@solisapaul Thanks. I do see right there in the Amazon part description it says "Flexible Coupler is made by Upgraded Rubber which Last Much Longer and more Durable" so that sounds reassuring.
Thanks for watching. To your question I honestly wouldn’t know since that’s a four year gap between the manufactured dates of the vehicles and in a four year period with any manufacturer that deals with cars they do make a significant difference if it would only have been two years apart I would say it’s probably gonna be the same. My only suggestion would be to search Google for pics on the 2013 and 2017 Kia soul and visually hopefully, hopefully you can tell the difference if they are compatible or not hope this information helps stay safe and sound out there.👍🏽✌🏽
mavis4201 Thanks for watching it’s not as hard as it seems truly, it’s just very tedious. In the end it truly is a simple fix for what could cost an arm and a leg so to speak. 👍🏼✌🏼
Thanks for watching, you’ll have to grab the steering wheel and tilt to the far right so that the left side of the screw hole aligns on the left and then at the same time torque the screw in. It’s a little tricky but it works. Sorry for the late reply hope this helps.👍🏽✌🏽
@@solisapaul no worries I did figure it out, managed to get everything back together and it runs like a dream. Thank you for posting this video it was a life and money saver
would this fix the rattling noise that happens when going over bumps as well? in Canada there actually is no recall which blows my mind so I have to DIY too.
Collin Andrews first I would like to say thank you for watching my video. As to your question about experiencing noise when going over bumps I would say if you do not experience tremble at your steering column at 60 to 75 mph or the clique and clank from steering left to right while driving or not then it’s very likely you could have a rack and Pinion steering related issue. I hope this information helps by the way I someday wish to visit Canada I hear it’s a very beautiful place to visit.
@@solisapaul Thank you! The steering column does shake at high speeds and click when I turn right. I have an appointment next week at my local Kia to get the coupler fixed. I dont have time or the resources to do it myself. I'm just wondering if the coupler could be the reason why it rattles loudly when I go over bumps as well as the other issues. I'm hoping the bumps and rattling arent something unrelated to the coupler as its the cheapest thing to fix within the column.
You didn’t show the hardest part! The through bolt is hard to find. Personally I did not drop the column or disconnect harnesses. Once all 3 bolts are loose, you can turn the motor down to gain access. No one is mentioning this but the end of the assembly has a tab that rests on the through bolt bracket. Once you sit the tab in place, it is easy to get the through bolt in.
@@vaglazdimvaglazdim5330 I would honestly have it changed as soon as possible as I mentioned it’s not very expensive. The part itself is only around 4 to 5 dollars. If anything it’s just time-consuming at 600 miles and it is a must that you must drive the vehicle without getting it fixed, I would say travel no more than 50 mph for it seems that at 65 and above the string becomes unstable. I truly hope you can get this fixed as soon as possible. Stay safe and sound.👍🏽✌🏽
I would say that if it’s the same exact sound as well as the vibration on the steering wheel, it’s possible that the coupler was either of not good quality or not aligned properly. Unfortunately, the only way to know this would be,you would have to inspect the coupler that you just installed and make sure it’s still seated properly or did not crumble, not all couplers material is made with good quality material. Truly hope this information helps.👍🏽✌🏽
The only problem I had was I should not have totally removed the bolts on the front too on the column and should have waited till after I got that rear one done it took a while to ratchet that thing all the way out cuz it was in a bind so it's better to just loosen the front two bolts to get to that top rear bolt on the column
Very interesting most of the cable harnesses are set by standard snap and fit so it couldn’t be that he plug them in incorrectly? I would immediately take it back and explain to him what is happening. This is a simple task more less and should not cause any issues to any electrical system. I truly hope this gets resolved sorry for your inconvenience stay safe and sound.👍🏽✌🏽
Thanks for watching since this is happening to your vehicle it would be very wise to have it fixed as soon as possible it could lead to further damage and possibly loss of proper steering control.👍🏽✌🏽
