On paper the 2013 Nissan GT-R and Alpina B6 seem well matched. Autocar tests the reality on road and at Brands Hatch.

While they might not seem like obvious rivals, the 542bhp 2013 Nissan GT-R and 532bhp Alpina B6 are surprisingly close on paper. Both cars have a quick-shifting automatic gearbox, four-wheel drive and performance numbers which defy their considerable kerb weights. But specifications are one thing, how they perform in the hands of Steve Sutcliffe are quite another. I now own the very same B6 featured in this video. I did a lot of research as I was looking for a relatively understated and comfortable road car with individuality, class and serious performance. The B6 was the best fit I could find by a mile and is a dream to drive. I will never drive it on a track but on the road having tested loads of similarly priced cars, this one is stunning. It's my first alpina and will not be my last. I cannot recommend enough and it even has space for the kids!

Alpina is for individualists. Limited production gives you a guarantee you won't be passing same car on the road. It's for people who appreciate BMW engineering but want to have something special, rarely seen on the roads.

There are a lot of differences between these cars. While 4 people can ride very comfortably in the B6, the GTR has decent seats for only two people, and the GTR is still less comfortable. The B6 is also more refined and luxurious, it is not made for track. Actually the time of the B6 is not bad.

and how will the adac notice the pick ups wich are done by the dealers? does the adac work with the nsa? and remember we are talking about the breakdown stats.

The GTR has a track pack now. Gets faster and faster every year. Call it ugly, call it soul-less, it is still an amazing achievement

thanks for the respect. I'll give you that the LCD became pixelated over time and that it is not durable over time. However, that it is a very small problem. When you look at the car and the actual important components like the gearbox and the engine, they still run like the day they were made. I've taken the car out a couple of times when I was 18 and pushed it past 250 kph and let me tell you i've driven nothing like it. It was simply amazing. I was euphoric.

No matter how similar they are on paper it was absolutely ridiclious test. Two completely different cars for two completely different target markets! Where the Alpina isn't so much about going fast as being one of the ultimate super-luxurious GT cars, the GTR is all about on track/paper performance. We all knew the verdict we read the title. AutoCar, I know this was a test for interest sake but please do more direct comparisons i.e. the ones that matter. Kudos to the Alpina's lap time and Steve!

Funny I guess they'll compare any two press cars they have t the same time. In any case, what is the point of the Alpina B6? Is it for someone who wants the power of an M6 but in a more comfortable, civilized package? I don't get it.

I rechecked the updates on the data you provided and it is updated every 3 months, going back over the last few years the data points have been bouncing up and down like a yoyo. And yes Honda engine reliability has been overstated for some time now, they did win ADAC in 1993 and their cars from the early 90's were good, but looking at the data that you provided me with the cars with the least reliable engines came from Rover (guess who uses Honda k series engines) with a 1 in 13 failure rate.

My dad owns one, i drive it pretty often. Runs the same as it did when he bought it in 1990. Beautiful car, razor sharp and very reliable.

The thing is, customers looking at the Alpina wouldn't even consider the GTR, and customers looking at the GTR probably can't afford the Alpina nor would want it just because you can compare the 2 cars in some respects, doesn't mean you should.

Hahahaha,i know the feeling :) I v been taking my dad car when i was 17 (who wasnt) ..,it was Eagle Talon TSI AWD and damn,it was fast!! Glad that your dad keeps that car in shape,couse that car will cost fortune in just few years,as its the last one hand build BMW M series! Most of these are heavily modified,damaged,crushed and used to the limit(as you can see in many youtube videos) and having one in original condition is spot on! Cheers mate :)

The GT-R is such a big source of entertainment for journalist since 2007.In straight line it can only be smoked by a Veyron or a Superbike and on the twisty stuff there is nothing like it this side of a racing car with slicks.

I am thinking about getting an used GTR .. But because of the Finances plus from hear say, that the Suspension isnt that Stiff anymore as on the earlier Modells, I am considering a 2011 Modell .Noway earlier because of some weak spots in the Gearbox and so on and some Later refined details.. The 2011 was the Modell whom became the biggest upgrade in term of Cabin and suspension Stiffnes, I really find imporant. I am searching for a kind of BMW M3/ M4 Stiff Chassis ,very direct Steering Feeling in a Car build from the Looks ,as Massiv as the GTR . Perfect combination for me Personally.. What I really would like to know is what Modell year is offering that the most? Lets say to Start wih the 2011 Modell till 2014.. I know they made another Update in the 2015 Modell to soften the suspension a bit.. I dont need that ;) I'll be glad to receive some Technical information or maybe a Video on this subject . Thank you for in advance!

well in my opinion you should get the 2013 cause it hasnt been used that much and trust me you will love the gtr it is just amazing even if you get it 2011 you will not regret it .

I understand that Rover and Honda both made their own k series engines and Rover most used the D series Honda engines in their cars, but remember Rover and Honda were joined at the Hip for decades swapping engines and other components (ie the diesel accord used a purely rover engine). This was so much so that just before Rover was sold to Nanjing in 2005 for stripping Honda had to take legal action to get Rover to return the Honda tooling and blueprints that they were still using.

As a car enthusiast, I don't need a video to show me that an Alpina BMW is much more comfortable but a lot slower than a GTR. Most of us knew what the conclusion would be just by reading the title of the video. Now comparing the GTR to something that was build to compete with it, hot hatches with some entry-level sports cars or a GT car shootout, now those would be comparison videos we can appreciate and enjoy. That's my point, and that's the reason so many agree with me.

The GTR interior noises he mentioned are real. My Maxima (clearly nowhere near the GTR, but still a Nissan) has the same issue. For the 1st month or 2 of ownership I kept thinking I'd broken something just from sounds the car makes. Engine idle sounds scarily clanky at times.

The GT-R has been and always will be an amazing performance car that can trash cars costing 20k+ more than it. But it hasn't really shocked or inspired me ever since its introduction. What I would love to see is a super-light, super-aggressive, no-comfort version with nearly 600 bhp. That would make the hair on the back of my neck stand back on end again!

With all due respect to your dad car and the M5 itself..,that was the first year of production of the E34 M5..,and it was hand build :)Superb-high tech engine with stunning performance that was unmatched by very few cars in that time! Great driving machine-yes! Solid build and looks-yes! But reliable not! As it was from the first year of production,it was suffering from water pump problems,pressure in the system causing overheating..LCD dash screen losing pixels...

If you look on the website that the article references and check the actual data it is very different to the results that the article claims for this year, it states Honda was first when it is actually 13th for engine reliability and that Mercedes benz actually has the most reliable engines :D

Thanks for your advice, i will try to remember that the next time i test drive one AGAIN. (Assuming that you are an owner as you appear know so much about the car) I test drove a couple before i bought the E92 M3 a few months ago, great car but nowhere near as most 'youtubers' believe. What relevance is it being 2 sec quicker round a track to the average owner other than bragging rights? What relevance does owning an unrefined car with a crap ride/interior and frequent servicing make- lots

Sort of. It's a different take (with different upgrades) on the idea of an M6 that's more customisable. Supposedly smoother. Autocar have a road test on their site that explains it a bit better.

I agree with your comment completely and this is probably the reason why most gtr's have had plenty of owners already, people don't keep them, they buy them and sell them on not long afterwards. the novelty of a fast 0-60 at every set of lights and looking like a grown up boy racer everywhere you go must get boring, plus it's a nissan, so £4000 for a set of brakes and pads would get boring at service time and leave you asking do i really need this car.

I do have to say you're right; "the tests were as doctored as I say" they do. In the 90's the cheating and faking were even more important and easy to do. Have a nice day.

wont say the tests are fake but you need to be a member in the adac and you need to be picked up from them. then your car is in those statistics. BUT if you got a premium german car like bmw audi etc and you let them service your car then you got a mobility warranty. everytime you are at the dealer for service they have to tell you that "you now got that warranty and if you brake down call this number. and bmw etc. will pick you up free." so most of the newer cars dont appear in the adac stats.

mate I'm sorry but I own a couple of BMW's and one of them just ticked over 300k on the clock still bulletproof reliable on original engine, gearbox even the clutch has lasted somehow. I have also owned an e39 m5 for the last 18 months and my total service and repair bills over this period have come to $90 (did $40 on a new set of engine temp gauges and $50 on a new windscreen washer pump) haven't had to service yet due to the 15-18k mile (3 year) service interval, try that in a GTR.

The major problem with your argument is that the numbers are based on breakdown calls per capita of registered ADAC members. The only reason that people register their cars with the ADAC breakdown service is that their mobility warranty has run out. On average this means that the eligible luxury marks that you have pointed out will have an older mean age than the cheaper brands, therefore this works out as detrimental to the reliability numbers of the luxury brands themselves.

I would love to see the GT-R compared to a real car like the gumpert Apollo R, Noble M600 and the new Porsche 911 GT3, AMG SLS Black or GT and just for fun a 9ff GT Turbo! If the GT-R is comparable to these cars then you get a really good car for your money

Ahhhh, so the track focused car was better on the track but the comfortable road car was more comfortable on the road, BUT the cheaper car ideas a far better price tag... Fascinating.

Next time compare the GTR with G63 AMG on the track, please. They have similar power, but the G class is more expensive. I wonder which one will be faster...?
