This was a failure on early bonnevilles. It didn't happen that often and only seemed to happen if the engine backfired while starting with the starter still engaged. Triumph in I believe around 2005 beefed up the casting. There are some out there that even with this update the problem could still happen. Back then triumph did help out with some of the out of warranty failures. There is an aftermarket kit/ plate that can be installed to beef up the area so this doesn't happen. I have also seen online that some have repaired the bike using the kit, it is called Safe Start. Hope this helps. I have a 2007 T100 and keep my fingers crossed when I start it hoping it doesn't backfire.

I also suffer "Catastrophic Engine Failure" on my 2012 Triumph Bonneville T100. Munroe Motors of San Francisco did not bother to open the engine up after listening to the crunching noises coming out on the primary side. I bit the bullet and obtained a 2016 to swap into the frame. The original engine call a "Core" now was scrap heaped.

50k miles on my 2005 Bonnie. The return spring just failed on the gear change that's how I found this video. Haven't broken anything else I can think of in my 17 years of ownership, just the usual consumables, so I'd say she's reliable enough, any bike can have manufacturing issues like this one seems to. This problem was worse in the early models and Triumph beefed it up a bit but not enough. The guy in this video was very unlucky for this to of happened, it usually is caused by the battery being low from the alarm being on and the bike not being used I removed my alarm for this reason. The guy who owned my bike before me kept trying to start it with a flat battery which damaged the Sprag Clutch on the starter which I had to replace after owning it for two weeks : ( but all is well now

I have a 2012 model and really miss not having ABS. I also miss the fact it has no torque to speak of and must be caressed to encourage its power to be delivered is very elastic. E.g. turn the throttle and (a few moments later), the engine responds. It seems breathless and flat (even compared to my XS650 yamaha which I have just sold to make room for this). Very strange after coming off my 23 year old R 1150 GS BMW. I would say the BMW would out handle and out perform the Triumph any day also. A very ordinary scoot.

Id say what happened was someone hit the starter with the engine running. That broke the housing to the starter drive. I am not sure of how the bike starter works, but on a car, the bendix jumps out to engage the starter with the flywheel and that starts things going. It's hard to bust casting covers if you do things right but I'd say trying to start the bike after it's running could definitely cause what has happened to happen. 2013 bike, runs all this time fine, then just snaps like that? Could be wrong. But who knows. Never had that issue and I have a 2005. But, I have seen and heard people who have hit the starter on their car, while its running and it's a terrible sound. Design on a bike is different, but it has to be similar in regards to the starter Bendix throwing the start gear out via centrifugal force, engaging the flywheel. Hope you got it going.
@rickconstant6106
@rickconstant6106 Год назад
This type of bike starter doesn't work in that way - the gears are constantly meshed, and it drives the crankshaft through a one-way clutch, which provides drive in one direction, but freewheels in the other. if you engage the starter when the engine is running, the gears will spin, but the clutch will still freewheel because the crankshaft will be spinning faster than the sprag clutch. The damage shown is caused by lateral load exceeding the strength of the material, a load which will be at its greatest when the starter first engages and tries to turn the stationary crankshaft.
@MrJohnandMargie
@MrJohnandMargie 3 года назад
The casting are poorly designed for the stresses against them. I would suggest getting and expert TIG welder to repair and reinforce the design. In the long time I would suggest the using the clutch might lessen the stresses during starting. Certainly the course of action I will be using on my bonnie 2007 from now on.

This is what happens after 'fixing' the half turn starter problem,, clucth switch, side-stand switch and neutral switch get bypassed. Then it's overly easy to engage the starter with motror running and in gear, just hit the starter instead of the horn. You won't know until you restart. The 'fix' for the half turn issue is just misleading, the problem is within the ECU and not bad switches.

In 2019 I made a decision, Bonneville, Interceptor or W800 Street. I bought the W800 and have put on 12,000 km so far and am extremely happy with my choice. The Triumphs seem to be the least reliable of the three (I've heard of electronic and transmission issues). Every ride on the W800 Street is a joy. I think the Guzzi V7 would have also been a good choice as well. The interceptor felt top heavy, (to me) compared with the W800. I also enjoy the 360 degree firing order, long stroke, air cooled engine and bevel driven top end of the Kawasaki. By far the closest to 60's era Brit Bikes but without the hastles of an old bike.
