( www.TFLcar.com ) The new 2013 Volvo XC60 T6 with all-wheel-drive is a modern 5 person Crossover that can be purchased with what Volvo calls Instant Traction all-wheel drive. And while the system is design to provide better traction in the rain, in the snow and even on dirt roads, the Volvo XC60 T6 is not considered to be a hardcore off-road vehicle like for instance a Jeep Wrangler. But that of course doesn't mean it can't go to the end of the paved road and beyond. In other fun and informative TFLcar off-road review we take the 2013 Volvo XC60 T6 AWD into Colorado's snowy mountains to see how it does when the road turns rocky, muddy and steep.

Great video. We were looking for a decent used truck under 50K miles for the winter/family road trips and quite surprised with the capabilities of the XC60 from your videos. Given the pandemic we were not interested in strolling around a dealership and your vids definitely helped us avoid the aforementioned dealer trip. Opted for the R design and hopefully we'll be as satisfied as you with the vehicle. Would have never thought a company that prides itself on safety would create such a capable vehicle. 7 years later and your videos are still helping ppl. Good stuff guys

yes! thank you, everyone assumes the xc60 is cant do anything other than a dirt road, but it is actually one of the most rugged premium crossovers out there. the chassis rigidity is 20,000 nm/degree, which is pretty good (the LR2's is 28,000 nm/degree and is the most rigid compact crossover ever). You should do an in-depth comparison on road and between the xc60 and lr2. The GLK is the only other comparable crossover, but it doesnt come with its offroad tech and taller suspension in the US :-(

That Haldex system is sweet. You could get it on the last year the SAAB 9-3 was made. Audi licenses the system IIRC and called it Quattro.

This is the kind of video I have been waiting to watch. Especially at 08:08. Understandably, crossovers are NOT true off-road vehicles. But with decent ground clearance, tires, and the technology to make the AWD system capable, even a crossover with open differentials is capable of traversing light to moderate off-road conditions. But only a few smaller Audi models got the Haldex. The bigger ones still got the original quattro. On some Saabs it also includes a automatic diff-lock on the rear axle, you can find it on the Black Turbo (or Turbo X) and some 9-3X. Great system.

All T6 Volvo XC60's have HDC. It's a button in the lower right hand side of the panel. You have to be in first gear, in manual mode.

Thanks for the heads-up. As far as we know have yet to have anyone take us up on our challenge (watch?v=zxvI5mw63EI). We suppose it is one thing to sit in front of a computer and brag about how easy it would be drive up the trail, and an all together different task to actually do it.

I speak three Languages, English, German and Czech. Czech is of course a Slavic language similar to Russian in some ways...so I sort of understand Andre...sort of.

This is an underrated luxury CUV, often it gets lost in the shuffle with Audi Q5, Lexus RX, BMW X3, Cadillac SRX, etc. However, consider the Volvo XC60, also just like most Volvos are extremely safe.

I almost slid off the mountain in an Explorer due to dumb traffic control (two buses planted into mountain side), but I think that Volvo/Haldex system would have handled the decent much better from 8K feet.

Not really. The Durango is lower to the ground, it only has AWD, and the Grand Cherokee has a terrain system.

Someone below (violinoamore) said "Russians... always behave in the most disturbing obtrusive way." If you want disturbing and obtrusive, try getting stuck with a load of Americans! I thought this was a pretty good review by the way. A lot of people don't seem to get that a Jeep Wrangler and a Volvo XC60 are designed for completely different target markets. Obviously a luxury family car with a bit of off-road ability isn't going to seriously challenge a Wrangler on this sort of terrain. But then I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than travel across Europe in a Jeep Wrangler!

Yeah we have little use for serious off road vehicles in America. 95% of the places I have to go are accessible by paved road. The other 5% have decent dirt roads.

off road means NO ROAD, but sometimes no trail either. You go through dry/wet river beds, swampy terrain, mountain pasture grass/snow etc. Search for RUSSIAN TRUCKS, and they demonstrate what going offroad means. So called offroad 4wd in USA are just rough trails. Search for LION's Back and Bathtub in Moab.

well, that wrangler is pretty pointless, its axes are still as low as on the basic version i think. so this impressive ground clearance is just an eye-catcher

Not bad, but hardly a challenging road. A Ford Focus could have driven it. Also, your statement about technology being better than tires for offroading is completely incorrect. A tire's tread depth, width, sidewall and pattern will always play a huge part in traction, especially when combined with diff locks.
