An awesome presentation Hans. My daughter whom is eight, is starting out in woodworking and I chose the scroll saw as her starting point for power tools. This presentation is exactly what she needs to get started and she can come back to it for reference whenever she needs to. I keep it fun for her and give her a nudge where she needs to try something new. I E-mailed Steve Good and he sent me a ton of animal projects he had not put up within his site, just for kids to get started. An excellent guy all around. Thank you Hans and thank you Gwinnett Woodworkers. Derek

What a great tutorial! You Sir, are an excellent instructor! And this is coming from the mouth of a school teacher herself! I recently retired and decided to dedicate my leisure years to various forms of art work, including wood scrolling. Your video has truly motivated me to go ahead and start using the scroll saw I purchased a few years ago (as I prepared for retirement). Thank you SO very much for this wonderful video which I will watch again and again as I begin my new venture in wood crafting! A big thumbs-up for you!

thanks so much for this video! I live way out in the sticks and don't know any scroll sawers. Just bought a DeWalt 788 and seem to be picking up the skill fairly well. I make "fairy doors", wall hangings, and just learning anything. Amazing help and I have bookmarked it.

Great Video, Hans! I happen to own an old 24" Delta Scroll or Fret saw. I discovered that Oliver once made a 36" and for real kicks and giggles, a Jones Superior 36" (for those who adore antique machines). The Jones Superior and Oliver machines are not for the beginner and the Delta 24" may also be for the brave intermediate and advance Scrollsawyer. These are not lightweight machines as the Delta/Dewalt machine in the video and most such new saws that you will find. They are heavyweights, the Delta 24" being the lightest. Besides the intricate artistic patterns these are typically capable of doing, it might interest others who use/watch these scrollsaw/clips to know that scrollsaws are known to be used in the "Patternmaker's" trade. Patternmakers will make patterns that will be used in metal casting foundries. While modern technology largely replaced the standard scrollsaw, the old school scrollsaw is still used by many shops for applications that may call for it. The patternmakers interpret and transfer the design into wood and following the entire processing of the wood pattern, it is then sent to the foundry. These patterns are for the molds, with which the metal is cast. It could be ornamental or it could be a part on your automobile. The old way was/is labor intensive, but from the high tech vantage point of today, it sure is fascinating to watch and do in a tangeable hands-on way opposed to the push-button method. Thanks again.

Thanks for the beginner intro video. I've been considering getting a scrollsaw, and I think this has decided it for me. Now to start seeking good beginner patterns. :)

That's a very nice and thorough instruction video! My problem is that I've got a saw that has the style of blade like the one you've made in the corner (the big wooden example just behind you in the video), with small pins sticking out in the top and bottom making it a "T" and when I try to use it my stock are jumping up and down no matter how hard I press down on the piece .. I never got any use of that saw at all ..do you have any tip for that? I'm thinking about trying to make some kind of material holder to prevent it from jumping ..but ..
@robausa1
@robausa1 10 лет назад
Some scrollsaws can be adapted from the pin type blades to pin less. It depends on the brand of your scrollsaw. The pin type blades are normally larger and more aggressive causing the blade to catch on the wood and making the wood jump.

i just bought a dewalt scroll saw and i would like to know what kind of blades should i buy, and what does this means 12.5 (TPI)
@emmitstewart1921
@emmitstewart1921 9 лет назад
Edwen Rodriguez A Dewalt scroll saw uses all kinds of blades. It depends on what you are cutting. For fretwork, I like reverse skip tooth blades. I use size #2/0 for wood under 3/8" thick, for heavier wood, up to 3/4" thick, I like size #5, but #5 may cut too by CloudScout" class="rritoijgtx" href="#2957288"> slow with really hard wood. You can buy assorted packs and see which types work best for you.TPI means teeth per inch. The smaller the teeth on your blade, the more teeth fit into an inch. A good rule of thumb is that at least three teeth should be touching the wood at all times for smooth cutting. Your 12.5 TPI blade would be fine for wood down to 1/4" thick, but would be too course for 1/8" thick wood. The bigger teeth will cut faster, but the less fine detail you can get. A smaller tooth blade will cut finer detail, but will cut more slowly.

Hey Hans, While the definition of this great video was nice, it was difficult at times understanding what you were saying because of the saw noise, and surprisingly you do not offer close captioning like the videos you offered at your group demos; nor did you use a mic.....or at least it didn't sound like you did. Is it too late to at least add the close captioning? Thank you. Great info, just need to fix the audio or add captioning. Thank you.

Im yumascroller and i use 3M supper 77 spray glue and spray it on the pattern not the wood and to remove it i use clear 70 or 90% isopropyl Alcohol to remove the rest of the pattern with a small paint brush put the brush in the isopropyl and brush it on the pattern will come loose doesnt take long and very easy to use.

why is there so much emphasis on being perfectly 90 degrees? If the piece doesn't come out the front it will come out the back or vice versa. Its not like it will get stuck. I've often wondered that. No one can tell if you sawed a piece out at 91 degrees or 89.
@gwinnettwoodworkers
@gwinnettwoodworkers 7 лет назад
If you stack cut something like a portrait your bottom pieces may no longer be on the lines of a pattern. I normally don't tilt my table so once I check it stays good for months.

The man is obviously an amazing craftsman but as a subscriber I am disappointed in the video quality. The most important thing is the technique and during the cuts the camera is a close up of his hands and not the wood and you can't hear a word he's saying. Maybe a lapel mic and an overhead camera angle.
@bluebluebluebird
@bluebluebluebird 8 лет назад
Good info, but setup a few tripods, and film yourself. The camera man ruined this for me, and you could slow down a little. I don't see half of what your are doing because you're just sawing away, and saying look, can you see that? No, I can't, and then you have to spend two minutes explaining what you could have been explaining to me while you cut in real time.
