Hi everyone, just wanted to say that i went to the Honda dealership to get my cvt fluid changed. For those who are confused you are supposed to drain and fill ONCE and it is recommended every 30k miles. One thing that i feel i must inform is that if your notification for cvt service pops up WITH the oil change, that cvt notification will go away too when getting an oil change. I guess the other honda dealership didnt inform me on that so i went without a cvt fluid change for 50k miles which is why im getting it changes now. I hope you guys were able to understand me lol. Thanks MrRangerZr1 for all your helpful videos.
@MrRangerZr1
@MrRangerZr1 6 лет назад
Yes whenever the maintenance/oil change reminder comes on, it gives you a code. You'll have to look into your owner's manual to check what the code means. Resetting it will "clear" the code. Keep in mind, you don't necessarily have to do whatever the code tells you to do.

Have you noticed many CVT transmissions failing prematurely ? My friend is a service manager at a Honda dealership and he told me he has had only one cvt failure out of thousands that come through his service department . I am a retired mechanic and I change my transmission oil on my 2014 Honda Civic frequently .I have seen one CVT that the steel belt broke on and the inside of that case was completely trashed .I am finally getting use to my CVT but it took me a long time to get used to .Thanks for the video ,it was very good ! I have watched other videos as well. Some require the car to be perfectly levelled, meaning all four wheels to be jacked up to make car fully horizontal. Furthermore, check nut was not opened in this video to check level of fluid. Would like your feedback on these two points. Thanks.
@MrRangerZr1
@MrRangerZr1 5 лет назад
Doesn't have to be level to drain the fluid. Measure what came out, and put back the same amount back in.
@yactabay
@yactabay 14 дней назад
Car MUST be level in cars requiring it when checking level can only be done by seeing how much fluid drips out at normal operating temperature. Look that up. It depends on your car. Otherwise being level may only serve make more fluid come out depending on the transmission. The important thing is put back in what you took out. If CVT fluid is the same as a regular automatic transmission then you change the fluid with car cold. Driving up the car onto ramps won’t change the fluid temperature enough so don’t worry. Fluid expands with heat so wha to comes out of a hot car will look like more than the same amount cold. You will overfill if you replace hot fluid with cold fluid in what looks like the same amount.

I just purchased one of these cars 2 days ago. Today I finally got a chance to look under the hood and noticed that that rubber plug that you took off was sitting next to the plug hole basically the plug was unplugged. So I plugged it back up but it doesn't seem like it has a tight seal. Can the rubber be bad or something. Luckily I noticed it today and really lucky that it didn't drop on the floor and it was still sitting on top of the transmission

@vermontvermont9292

It's not the plug. It's your transmission breather tube. They get clogged up as early as 20k. Just remove the breather hose, and clean it. Google where it is, too hard to explain here. That's what causes the fill plug to pop off. The trans cant vent the gases , so they build up and shoot the fill plug out.
@homuraakemi9556
@homuraakemi9556 7 месяцев назад
That is correct. There is a very small plastic elbow located in front of that rubber plug that is like a PCV valve for the transmission. Take it off and clean it out and you will have no problem with the plug popping out.

@MrRangerZr1
@MrRangerZr1 3 года назад
common problem. replace the plug.
@sergiotisnado545
@sergiotisnado545 Год назад
This is likely due to your tranny vent cap (also found on top of the tranny) becoming plugged and no longer able to vent pressure, so the pressure then forces the top rubber plug out. You need to remove and either replace the vent cap or unclog it. Left uncorrected, I suspect you could be at risk of other seals being forced to bulge out or rupture in order to vent the tranny.

I noticed there is a hole right next to the fill port. Do you know what it's purpose is?. I m going to replace the ATF on my car as well as the fill plug. I figure my fill plug is worn out because there is oil stains all around the fill port. I want to use some kind of cleaning spray to clean around it but that HOLE has me worry. All the spray fluid will go into that hole. Please let me know. TIA

Which hole are you talking about? I came across the same problem! My fill plug became brittle and its forming oil stains around the fill plug.

MrRangerZr1 I just bought a new plug. Only costs $12 dollars. I have not figured out what that hole is for. I want to use carburetor cleaner to clean the TF stains around the plug but the hole that's right next to it worries me. I'm afraid it leads inside the transmission. Don't want the carburetor cleaner going inside and ruining transmission....I asked the parts guy at the dealer, he said it might just be part of the transmission casting.
@MrRangerZr1
@MrRangerZr1 6 лет назад
Put the old plug back on and clean up the residue, then install the new plug. This way the plug won't swell up or get brittle from the brake cleaner or whatever you'll use to clean the TF residue.

Last time I did my CVT transmission fluid on my 2014 Honda Civic. I brought 4 quarts of transmission fluid to the mechanic. The mechanic checked his computer and told me my car only takes 2.5 quarts. After changing the fluid, he checked with a computer and told me it's ok. I have been driving almost 25000 miles since then. I watched several RU-vid videos. They all said it takes about 4 quarts and that's why I brought 4 quarts. Should I add one more quart by myself or just leave it like that? It doesn't seem to have any problem so far.
@MrRangerZr1
@MrRangerZr1 6 лет назад
You need to check the fluid level first. There is a check bolt above the drain plug.
@cooperjohnson1709
@cooperjohnson1709 6 лет назад
Chun-Wei Lin 2.5 is good. It depends how long you let it drain and how your car is lifted i believe. I serviced my own just last week and at first i put 4L based on what the dealer suggested but its wayyy too much because only 2.5L came out. I probably didnt let it drain out along time but anyways i had to drain a good 1.5L out again or else it will be overfilled and could cause some fluid foaming which is bad for the seals.
@jeffbanfieldsflwr3537
@jeffbanfieldsflwr3537 6 лет назад
The fluid should be level with the check plug. If a small amount is dribbling out, then you have enough. If not, slowly add fluid until you see it start to drip out.

I wouldn't add any additives. Do a 2 or 3 times drain and flush of the ATF and see if it helps. I heard dr.tranny works wonders if you do add an additive. TBH, CVTs aren't really quick off the line, they have some slack.
