Dude - thanks for that last minute comment you made about pulling on the trans cooler lines ... I swear they both clicked but one wasnt in all the way apparently. That was a much better surprise in the driveway as opposed to my hour commute. Much appreciated!

Exactly. You don't know how many times I have had to get the roll back and go pick vehicles up because other shops left the line loose and the only way you find out is while you're driving and the vehicle doesn't move forward any longer. Lol Glad I was able to help!

Man, this just saved me at least $700 in labor costs! Thanks so much for this. One small issue others might run into, though. My 2014 Sierra SLT has an auxiliary battery tray (no battery, just the tray) on the driver's side. This had to be removed in order to move the washer fluid tank back. Not a big deal. BTW, what’s up the 23 people that gave this a thumbs down? Seriously?
@cdarnau

I'm glad it helped! The one in the video also has an AUX battery tray in it. It doesn't have to be removed. The upper part of the neck will still move enough to get the bar out. You just have to use a little more "Helping". Lol

You saved me about $1K because of this video. Dealership wanted $1350 to replace a condenser, which, BTW, General Motors knew were bad from the beginning. I'm a GM employee and have always been loyal to them BUT, this sucks no matter how you look at it! My truck, although 6 yrs old, only has 34K miles on it. Thanks again, Chris!

Removing the metal cross piece might be a bit more work but seems to be the best/easiest way to go for getting the old condenser out and new one in. I've seen others fight with tilting the radiator back and struggle with removing the condenser out/in to avoid removing the cross piece.

Just finished this up - a big thank you for the clear and concise directions. You saved me about 500 bucks for the condenser replacement. One note, the amazon condenser came bent and I had to run to Advance to get a new one. Be aware that if the condenser is bent the transmission cooler lines may not snap in correctly. That took the majority of the time to do this job. Again, thanks man.

First Off...Thank You! Saved me hundreds if not a thousand easily. But I wanted to give a few tips for people to avoid the mistakes I made. I ruined the first condenser I bought. While connecting the coolant lines back to the condenser, I kept tightening because it did not seem like the gap was closed and they were all the way on. I ended up pulling the stud straight out of the condenser. Also, I purchased both of mine from Summit Racing Equipment. Although both said they came with the seals, neither one did. I had to go and buy a variety pack at NAPA auto parts. Just FYI.

Great video. I followed this video to do my 2015 GMC Sierra Denali with the 6.2L. I found that removing the air cleaner attachment pan and bracket gave me a better angle to access the 13mm nut for the lower lines on the passenger side. Removing the auxiliary battery pan allowed me to push the washer reservoir further back to allow better access to the 10mm bolts under the core support on the drivers side. I also used a vacuum with a soft bristle brush to clean the front of the radiator before installing the new condenser. Dealer quoted me close to $1,300 to do this job and it took me maybe a couple hours milking it and have spent maybe $200 for the condenser and refrigerant. Thanks a lot!

Great video on replacement!!! It’s just sad that yet another well known problem with newer gm trucks. You should never have to fix the ac on a fairly newer vehicle. Great Mexican made quality parts GM. Faulty welds on the condenser, coolant lines cracking on 2014-2015, seals blowing on on compressors. Keep pumping out those 50k plus trucks GM. As me how I know, proud owner of a 2015 shakerado.

Just found out today that my condenser has a leak. Dealer wants $1200 to do it. A year and a half go my ac compressor locked up and had to be replaced. Why isn’t there a recall for this common issue yet? Thanks for the video. I also liked and subscribed
@cdarnau
@cdarnau 5 лет назад
Thanks! The reason your compressor locked up before was probably because the system already had a condenser leak and when it got low in Freon caused the compressor to lock up. I have replaced many compressors with leaking condensers being the root cause. The reason there won't be a recall is because it isn't a safety condition. They did do a special coverage but it only went to 60k miles and only on certain vehicle lines. You can definitely replace the condenser yourself. It really isn't a tough job to do. I would like my daughter try it. Lol

As far as replacing the condenser, Chris Arau's video is by far the best. It's nice to watch the video and lay out all of the tools you'll need in advance. I highly recommend having a 10mm ratchet wrench for the 6 fun bolts, a deep barrel 13 mm socket for the ac inlet/outlet lines, and a short crowbar to grip the tranny lines like Chris did with his specialized tool. I didn't replace the AC line gaskets and haven't had any problems in almost a month. It took about 4 hours for me to get the old condenser out and the new one in. I referred to this video for the pulling vacuum and recharging the system: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-Pdq8JAlct6s.html. I added about 2 oz of Pag oil and almost 2 12 oz cans of freon. I got my condenser, oil, and freon at Auto zone for around $212. Autozone "loaned" me the vacuum pump and gauges. I could have saved about $40 getting the condenser on Amazon, but have read reviews of people receiving bent/damaged condensers. No Regrets doing the whole job myself and using Autozone for all of the parts.

My 2018 Sierra condensor went out yesterday...im fortunate i had the extended warranty which resulted in $300 on my end....either way the Dealer original quoted price was $2200! Surprised this has happened with a vehicle w only 60k miles. Not sure weather GM is building quality vehicles anymore..

It really is unfortunate that GM is having an issue like this. At our dealership we charge 850.00 for the new Freon condenser job and 650.00 if it is the old Freon to do the complete job since we all know how to remove it in a timely manner. We can still make money like that and the customer doesn't get hit with a 2000.00 bill for an AC job. As far a GM making a quality vehicle. I would have to disagree with you on this. Yes, GM does have an issue with this part and they really failed the consumer in finding a fix that would be a suitable solution. BUT! This really is such a small problem when you compare it to other issues. If the condenser does fail the vehicle is still 100% reliable. This will not leave you stranded or in any kind of danger. It does suck and is uncomfortable in the extreme heat of the summer especially in the south where I live. lol But in the grand scheme of larger problems, this really is a minor one. Just my opinion. I am a GM man through and through. Thanks again for watching!

I had a locked up ac compressor decided to replace that along with new condenser, and expansion valve. We measured the oil from the old compressor and dumped out the new compressor oil and added what was in the original compressor. Vacuumed for about a hour added freon felt better than the original thought the job was done drove about 2miles and started to blow hot heater like air. Thought we had the overcharged it so we took it to a place that has the machine and had it recovered no leaks. It was cooling then the next morning I turned it on it was just blowing hot air only blew out cold air when I was driving. Low Pressure was reading about 80psi and high was about 200psi. I recovered the freon got it down to 40psi and it began to cool again. Well same thing the next morning happened PSI was at 80 on the low side? Any ideas what too look at next?

Great video Chris. Getting ready to attack it tomorrow after work. I received the condenser today that I ordered from the link. The whole thing was bowed (potato chipped) so I carefully bent it back flat. The other thing was the AC lines don't look like the photo which shows them at what looks like a 90 degree bend. Mine are over bent back toward the condenser. I don't know if that's an issue or not. Any thoughts? Thanks again for the great video of this.

What’s the total labor time from start to finish? Does 6.6 hours sound reasonable to you? I was charged $660 in labor at $100 per hour equals 6.6 hours.
@cdarnau
@cdarnau 3 года назад
Ok, So the book time is 6.6Hrs. But in the video you can see it literally takes me less than an hour to do the whole job. I understand businesses charge book time. The reason they do that is because some jobs pay 2 hours and take 15 minutes and other jobs pay 2 hours and takes 4 hours. So it works itself out. Now, Should the customer endure the price. That's a separate question within the same question. Should the Customer pay the technician. Yes. The reason I figured out how to do this job this way is because of my experience, and tools I purchased personally to do jobs faster to make more money. BUT!!! These jobs are so easy if you went to them and told them that you would be willing to do the job but you only want to pay ( 550.00 if you have old Freon and 750 if you have new Freon) plus tax or you will take it somewhere else. They will probably jump all over it because they will still make good time to do it. At our dealership we Charge 550/750 to every customer that comes in because we want the work and we want to be competitive. There are a lot of businesses around here advertising they will do them for 500. So that's what we do. Just some advice. Hope this helps.
@HighStrung556
@HighStrung556 3 года назад
@@cdarnau doesn’t the labor rate of $100 per hour signify to the customer that the technician is very skilled? As opposed to a shop charging $50 per hour which is unheard of in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. My understanding of the book is 8/10 of an hour for disassembly and 1 hour for assembly and Freon. ASE says total time should not exceed 2 hours start to finish. Of course I didn’t research the process until after I was informed by a friend that I got ripped off. He’s been a highly trained and experienced tech with Cadillac for 15 years. Thanks for the reply. I understand the business aspect of it and the costs of running a business as I’m a business owner myself, but have become aware that I was suckered for $972 when it should have been a sub $500 job. The part cost $150 and Freon is under $50. I hate finding out later that I payed too much. I know I’m not alone.
@cdarnau
@cdarnau 3 года назад
@@HighStrung556 The time you were give (.8 and 1.0) is warranty time. That's how much GM will pay the dealership to do the job. If your vehicle isn't under warranty you get charged either Mitchell, Motors or Alldata time. Those come out to be 1.0 Diag - 4.2 Hrs Replace 1.4hrs Recover and Recharge which I am sure is how they got their time (this is from Mitchell). I agree that $972 really is kind of crazy to pay for this job when it is so easy and quick to do, but they really didn't do anything "wrong" when that's the actual time the book shows. Again, at our dealership we try to be competitive, but we also have to do 2 to get paid for the 1 they did. Just think, if you would have followed my video you would only have $200 in it. Haha.

Hi CHRIS ARNAU - is it a defect in the condensers that is causing them to fail or a weak point in the design causing a leak?
@cdarnau
@cdarnau 5 лет назад
This is the weak spot in the condenser. Unless the condenser is damaged physically, this is normally where you will see the leak. With that being said. Everything is man made and is capable of leaking at any play on the condenser.

so if you have the new 1234yf refrigerant is it possible to still do this? Also went to Orielys and the seals didn't come with the condenser to replace them for the lines like you said. is there a part number for those? They couldn't find.
@cdarnau

Yes, You can still do it. You just have to take it to the dealer to get charged with Freon. The lines come with retainers. Not Seals. The seals on the lower lines stay on and can be reused.
