( www.TFLtruck.com ) What half ton pickup truck is the towing king of the world? This time we've upped the ante and we go all in with 10,000 pounds of pain. Is it the Ford F-150 or the Nissan Titan or the new Chevy Silverado 6.2L. Today on The Fast Lane Truck we put these three of these trucks to the test as they take on the Ike Gauntlet 2.0.
In Episode 3 we test the most powerful light duty truck in America.....The Ford F-150 EcoBoost
The Ike Gauntlet is a timed run up one of America's steepest highways from 9,000 feet above sea level to the top of the mountain at entrance to the Eisenhower Tunnel in Colorado. Check out this promo for what's coming up soon on The Fast Lane Truck.

I choose the Chevy, NOT because it has the most power but from experience. I started school in 2006 driving my fathers 1996 Tahoe LT and I finished my masters in 2002 and the entire time the truck NEVER gave me any issues. I had to put a battery in it and that was it. No leaks, no breaking down.. Nothing. So my dad purchased a 2007 Tahoe and he hasn't had any issues out of his. So now its my turn to purchase a new Tahoe. GM has earned my business through quality and reliability. WELL DONE!

So, I get that they did the test this way to maintain consistency, but what I take away from this is that if they did it in manual, it probably would've been very competitive, if not the fastest of the bunch.

In my experience, the Silverado's tow/haul mode is only useful for going downhill. Appears to be the same with the new Silverado. Yeah, it holds gears longer but the programming is not aggressive enough going uphill & doesn't kick down when you want. I've towed a fully loaded trailer w/ a 2010 Vortec MAX 6.0 A6 w/ 3.73 going up steep mountains (Bay Area to Reno) & it worked great! More than enough power to stay at 65 mph. The trick/easy fix is to put it in manual mode & select the gear you want. It will hold the gear until you tell it otherwise. Works well going downhill too. While you were testing, what gear did it want to stay in? BTW, tell "Mr. Truck", who appears to favor Fords anyway, that Silverado's peak torque may come at 4,100 rpm but it still has plenty torque down low. That is one of the main benefits of Direct Injection, more low-end torque. I'm guessing, just like the new LT1, the L86 has about 90% of its peak torque between 3,000 and 5,500 rpm or maybe even better. As evidenced in the video, the Silverado had no problem breaking the tires loose while accelerating from a stop with the trailer. Problem isn't the torque but the GM TCM programming. I imagine that issue will soon be resolved with aftermarket tuning. Good review though. You guys kept it as fair as you could & Ecoboost clearly came out ahead in acceleration/maintaining speed. Don't know about longevity/reliability though. Heard people are having issues with the Ecoboost.

I've always been a fan of chevy and owned silverados. I have a 30 bumper pull travel trailer that I towed with my 09 silverado 2wd TX edition and it literately took everything that 5.3 had to pull that trailer. I got tired of being scared to tow my trailer so I traded that turd in on a 2013 f150 4x4 ecoboost. It's the first f150 I've owned and it out performs the silverado in every way possible. POWER, mpg, ride quality, cabin noise, even technology. This ecoboost pulls my camper so effortlessly that when we got to the campsite the tv, toaster over, food, etc was all in the floor from when I stomped it to see what it could do lol. Someone else put it best when they said Chevrolet is their own worst enemy, they have literately chased their own loyal customers to the competition.

Only thing I would complain about (and I know it doesn't really matter because the Titan is simply over matched here) is that Nathan adhered to the old rules of staying at or below 60mph in the Titan's run but both the Ford and the Chevy were allowed to run over 60mph quite a bit. Otherwise, another great video guys and I can't wait until you get some more trucks to test with the Ike Gauntlet's new 2.0 rules!

It's probably designed to downshift late for engine longevity. The heat soak of a 420hp engine could definitely reduce engine life.

@ThmsPtrsn
@ThmsPtrsn 10 лет назад
If they do the engine brake on one they should do it on all of them, and I think the gear ratios on the Ecoboost are more refined for the torque band on it. Also if you want fuel economy, I would really advise against the 3.73, plus since that gear is so much shorter you won't have the torque in the right rpm interval at the right time for the F-150. Although I would agree that if they did use the manual gear election on the Silverado they would have had an easier time. If you really are planning on towing 10,000+ in real life, get a diesel.
@Tigersfan829

1. The twin turbo on the ecoboost can suck in 25% more air. When you're 10,000 feet up, that helps. 2. The chevy got .5 mpg better than the ecoboost 3. If he had manually selected gears he wouldn't have the gear hunting problem. 4. I thought the purpose of the ecoboost was for power AND great fuel economy? I've heard a lot of people aren't happy with their ecoboost fuel economy.

I have noticed that when I use regular 87 fuel, my MPG, especially when towing, isn't fantastic. I read through the manual and it stated to use premium fuel when towing. I tried this and noticed not only improved MPG, but improved performance. I only use 93 fuel now. I get about 19 MPG going 70 with 93 octane and only about 14 MPG when 87 octane. I have filled up at discount stations before and averaged 12.7 MPG, twice! I couldn't even break the tires loose with that gas it was so bad. This engine is picky with what gas to use and it makes a huge difference.
@farmerallis
@farmerallis 10 лет назад
That's interesting info. So the slight improvement in mileage is offset by the much more significant increase in price for the 93 octane fuel. I wonder if the new GM engines will be picky on fuel, too.

I get 20's all the time on the highway in my Ecoboost when not towing which for me isn't very often. Which is really the target segment for this engine. The guy that wants all the power he can stand when he occasionally tows, but isn't going broke keeping the truck fed. If I were towing on a more regular basis I would have bought another Superduty Diesel.

Can't defeat the laws of physics. BTU'S. In truth the smaller engines are being overburdened, ford and chevy used to understand that torque rules the day. Big blocks in a tow truck. And you only need 3 gears. Lol. Tiny wound up engines will blow apart just after warranty is up. Just as designed.

Not bad until it burns down! Either way the Ford eco boost is a better design, now whether it holds up or not I don't know. But cutting cylinders in an engine is a waste of energy. Plus at higher elevations the Ford won't gasp for air like a naturally aspirated engine.

I drive a 4 speed with 5th gear overdrive standard shift f150. It's not the most capable, but when it comes to towing, I dont need fancy engine braking modes because I can control it all myself. It was inferior at that elevation, where it was down 30% on power. If I lived in the mountains and towed big loads every day, I'd take a diesel any day of the week. If I towed occasionally at elevation, I'd take that little ecoboost motor. It is really impressive all around.
@markmd695
@markmd695 10 лет назад
Agreed I'd take a Cummins myself any day of the week. But coming from a Sierra (2011) to a 13 ecoboost, I'm really happy. And disappointed with Chevy overall. I waited for the new 14 to come out hoping it would give me more interior room, more power from the engine (namely the 5.3v8) and while it did offer more than the previous model, I had to walk away with even the dealer telling me their truck couldn't compete with Fords for what I wanted under 50k

3:32 into the video, the safety chains are not properly hooked up. They are not crisscrossed (right chain on left of hitch, left chain hooked to right side of hitch), and they are not facing the right way with the hooks facing in the proper direction. This can be dangerous had the trailer come unhooked, the chains wouldn't do their job properly.

@threefortyduster
@threefortyduster 10 лет назад
Pretty surprised at how bad the transmission programming was on the Chevy. There's just nothing you can do up in those altitudes about forced induction though. Time to run the Ram back up the gauntlet and see if it can knock the EcoBoost off. All those talking about it's just a V6 need to drop it, it's a V6 with fake displacement added via turbocharging. That's what boost does, it artificially increases the engine's displacement, and if you notice, the V6 did get worse fuel mileage (yes, it is a concern when towing, it's nice to know you can make it to the next gas station). Great engine, but it's not like Ford is using a naturally aspirated V6 to compete with V8s here.
@threefortyduster
@threefortyduster 10 лет назад
The Ram makes good power, but it also has a gear advantage over the Chevy. It has 8 gears to choose from and won't have to try and figure out. Drop the fanboy stuff and let's talk real stuff here. Adding boost is adding false displacement. That is how it works. More air+more fuel=more power. I'm not saying it's bad, hell, I love turbos, and diesels are complete crap without a turbo strapped to them, but it doesn't change how they work. Plus, who knows, maybe the Ram acts like the Chevy, but how does one know unless they run it?
@J-W.-
@J-W.- 10 лет назад
Fake displacement? That's the first. And um who cares about fuel economy when towing ? No matter what you do its still going to be bad because your obviously pulling something that's heavy power and good fuel economy does not go together especially when we're talking about trucks and it doesn't matter if they didn't use a naturally aspirated engine the point is the chevy was gear searching made for economy which I don't understand in a truck like that
@seanya9989
@seanya9989 10 лет назад
jejeosborne Yeah, but who buys a truck for fuel efficiency?
@threefortyduster
@threefortyduster 10 лет назад
***** They did the Ram with the 7200 lb trailer and the guys, and it went faster than the EcoBoost (by .06 seconds, easily an error on the stopwatch). The 5.7 makes 395 hp and 410 lb-ft, hardly weak compared to the others, especially when it was just proven that the transmission, gearing, and powerband is just as important as peak power. (6.2 with 420 hp and 460 tq can't hang with a 365 hp/420 tq motor)
@threefortyduster
@threefortyduster 10 лет назад
Honestly, at the end of the day, the test ended up being a 0-60 test since most of the trucks could keep the grade at the speed limit. The Ram and the Ford both held 60 the whole way. 10,000 lbs could be different, but we don't know until they run it, hence...run the Ram with the 10,000 lbs and see how it fares. If you notice, I nowhere said in my original comment that it would be ZOMG THE FASTEST THING EVAR!!!!, I simply said run it again, with the bigger trailer, then we know. Yes, I drive a Ram. Yes, I can separate facts from fanboy.

@danhellerjr
@danhellerjr 10 лет назад
Hey TFLT guys... I just watched the Ike Gauntlet 2 (again) and thought of something. You guys reported the "efficiency" of the trucks in MPGs (Mile-Per-Gallons). Um, I don't think that's right. I think the true "efficiency" of this particular comparison should've been "GPS" (Gallon-Per-Second). I think the EcoBoost would come out on top again, but I think to do it right you should put a flow meter on the fuel lines, run them again and use the "GPS" formula. "GPS" = gallons of fuel / seconds The higher the better. Forward my comment to any mathematic pro and they'll agree.
@DolleHengst
@DolleHengst 10 лет назад
Dude, that's just a silly way to make the Ford look better. All three cars did the same amount of miles, did exactly the same task, and the Ford used up the most fuel doing so. How hard can it be? If you put a fuel meter on the lines that measures gallons per second, the lower is better. Not the higher. Basically.... you're an idiot.
@danhellerjr
@danhellerjr 10 лет назад
DolleHengst Really? Apparently your reading comprehension isn't what it should be. Try reading what I wrote again - slower this time. You'll see I explained the "GPS" formula as "gallons of fuel / seconds". The "/" symbol means "divided by" - it's apparent you don't know that. If they knew EXACTLY how much gas was used right down to the drop (flow meter) and then divide that measurement in gallons by how many seconds the run took, it would result in a very small decimal figure - or score if you will. The higher the "score", the better. This was a RACE 1st & foremost - if they felt the need to report the "efficiency", they should've expressed it in a relative way. MPGs would've only been truly relative if all the trucks were traveling at the same speed the entire run. Basically... I'm not an idiot & you can't read.
@danhellerjr
@danhellerjr 10 лет назад
DolleHengst In your defense, "GPS" isn't the best abbreviation/name for that formula. However, I did explain what it meant. I'm not sure how to express a formula like that - gallons divided by time (G/T) or some shit. I'm no mathematics professor but I know MPG isn't relevant when the variable of speed is introduced.
@DolleHengst
@DolleHengst 10 лет назад
Daniel Heller Look, the Ford performed best. It towed that trailer up the hill with the highest speed. So it pulled harder than the other trucks. It had more power. Power is energy. A combustion engine needs fuel to create energy. It's only fair that the Ford used more fuel. It worked harder. If a guy runs a marathon in 3 hours, he will burn more calories then when he does it in 4 hours. But you can't have both; be fast and use little energy.
@danhellerjr
@danhellerjr 10 лет назад
Agreed. In one of the other episodes of this series, I said something very similar. When I would put the pedal to the floor, I'd EXPECT it to DRINK the gas as fast it could burn it. Full throttle & cruise control are polar opposites.

It's shifting late because your foot is on the floor. My Suburban and Silverado both would downshift if you let your foot up a little, but I also use manual shift on my pickup. Also, how often are you adjusting your mirrors? If the mirror controls were so far under the dash that they couldn't be used, it wouldn't have left design. A little squeeze to get to the mirror switch is an ok compromise in my book. I agree that the trailer brake controller is on the wrong side. In regards to the 4WD and light dials, the old trucks had similar dials too, and GM products going back at least a decade have automatic headlamps, so most people never have to touch the lamp dial. If you own the truck for long term, you learn where the dials and switches are and it becomes muscle memory.

The Chevy of course had the best ENGINE BRAKING because it has 6.2 Liter of displacement. The only disadvantage of FORD using the small turbo engine is lack of engine breaking because it is small. But the little tiny 3.5 ecoboost had way more power at low RPM's than that big 6.2 Chevy did. If the guy kept that Chevy manually down in gear and let the pig scream at 5,000 RPM's in a lower gear it might have held 60. I like ecoboost. Imaging if Ford made a Ecoboost V8. But people would kill themselves with that kind of power. :-p

***** Do you think a person getting a twin turbo 5.0 is going to "save gas"? LOL Turbos don't always die at 60k. They will if abused, turned off scorching hot instead of allowing it to idle and cool down with the flow of oil, etc. Turbo Diesels even the old powerstroke were often going 200k on the original turbos. And when people pay over 40k for a sports car they got to know that it will have some pricy maintenance some day.

Come on guys. You are claiming that the Chevy consumed less gas based on the onboard computer's readout? What if the lowest that the readout goes is 3.2mpg? Also, take into account that the Chevy took 1 more min climbing the Ike. How much more fuel did it use during that 1 min. You guys should have done the mpg calculations manually. Sorry, that's not real world testing.
@TFLtruck
@TFLtruck 10 лет назад
Thanks for the comment. Actually that is exactly real world testing. We're doing the same way that a truck buyer would measure MPG in the real world. We're pretty certain that in the real truck world buyers don't drain the fuel tank to get an exact measure of MPG.
@peterserio7349
@peterserio7349 10 лет назад
I still maintain that the onboard computer can't be used for this test because the trucks are at WOT. Do we know whether the lowest digital readout on the Chevy is 3.2mpg whereas the other two trucks are 2.9mpg? What if the numbers don't go any lower? Also, the Ford made it up the IKE, roughly based on the times, about 12% quicker. That means that the Chevy was at WOT 12% longer. If we take roughly 7 miles and divide it my 2.9, that means the Ford consumed 2.41 gallons of fuel for the run. If you take 7 miles and divide it my 3.2, the Chevy consumed 2.19 gallons of fuel for the run. Are you telling me that the Chevy consumed overall less fuel while being at WOT for 1 min longer? In my opinion, the only way to measure fuel consumption is to do it manually but I understand it is not easy. As cool as the Ike Gauntlet tests are, maybe you guys should pick a 10mile highway run which includes some level land....well as level as possible in Colorado.

The 6.2L F-150 would have done worse than the Ecoboost. Its max configurable tow ratings are no higher than Ecoboost models. It may make slightly more peak torque than the EB, but it has less low end torque. It's also naturally aspirated, so it would have suffered in the high altitude. The 6.2L is a novelty engine for buyers who just want a cool sound and displacement bragging rights. The Ecoboost is the engine of choice for people who actually want to to and haul things.

The 6.2 is still bad ass with some more aggressive gears and it would have kicked ass. But the grade braking and fuel economy were good considering it's the biggest engine of the bunch. As for guys saying the ram could beat the 6.2 you must be smoking because the ram barley beats the 6.2 time up the grade with a 2000 pound lighter trailer. Good job gm and ford

your flooring the truck. in that one gear you had enough power to accelerate, when it up shifted your rpms dropped down and it couldn't make enough torque to accelerate or maintain. your speed fell eventually the truck sees that and decides to downshift. rinse and repeat. if you had stopped flooring it in the gear you were accelerating it in you could have held it and maintained speed. also some of those trucks have the ability manually shift. would have been useful for this test.

All these people saying ''GM paid for this test they had Ford use the ecoboost and not the 6.2!'' Don't you think maybe they chose the ecoboost because of the twin turbos when they're 10,000 feet up? I doubt the Ford 6.2 would do much better than the ecoboost since it's naturally aspirated.

this video and most of the comments show how dumbed down americans are. horse power wins cars shows, torque wins races. if your all that worried about brake temp put son better brakes. can't beat a good strong torquey motor. the makers of this little vieo are very biased towards chevy. perhaps a paid off sails pitch. for wins every time first time. no need to warm the fords up or make a second pass. just get in and go, that is how our society functions and honestly any other test is seen as biased. however most newer trucks have an auto start so if you want to play that warm up game lets just do the fair and honest warmup test on a cold day... or no warm up, truth is ford will win every time. look at who is number one with the ecoboost prototype at daytona. look who took the least bail out money. yes sir ford is number one for a reason, best in sale for 2013 also for a reason with an increase of 3%
@SirtubalotTX
@SirtubalotTX 10 лет назад
I'm half asleep and will probably have to watch this again but bottom line.. it appears that the Ford was best at maintaining 60 mph up this incline.. without downshifting..impressive. (Sans one instance) I was a little surprised at the Silverado having to downshift to 2nd as much as it did but don't want to pass judgement until I study the gear ratios a little more closely. In a situation like that, I would have just manually put it in 2nd and left it there for the remainder of the incline but to be honest? I really prefer to have my rpms down on inclines.. aka Diesel style. When towing, power curve is important kiddies and this is where the Ecoboost really shines. I'm not sure what kind of overhead the little 3.5 has in it but it will be interesting if/when Ford decides to squeeze more power and torque out of this thing. I for one wouldn't complain. As far as the grade braking on the Ford? I'm not giving this test much salt for that for very obvious reasons.
@SirtubalotTX
@SirtubalotTX 10 лет назад
***** Not a bad point but I'm pretty sure shift points aren't the main issue here with the Silverado as it was not able to maintain the desired speed in 3rd gear in this scenario. Could a shorter gear in the rear help the Silverado with a 3rd gear pull at that speed? you bet but it would mean higher rpms and reduced gas mileage/efficiency. More gears would definitely help too of course but ultimately, torque at lower rpms is key when towing. HP is important as well but can be irritating when towing if you have to wind everything out on a long incline to get to those numbers... no matter what or how many gears you have. You also have to keep in mind that situations like these are somewhat of a rarity but that can also vary depending on the area you live in and mainly drive. Bottom line? it's difficult to produce the torque curve the Ecoboost has without forced induction and it's even cooler to see Ford doing it with a gas engine with the intended purpose of towing. The 6.2 liter is a great engine so no hate there but the proof is in the pudding. Will see how things pan out in the future with the supposed 9 and 10 speed transmissions that Ford and GM are working on.
@manrightchea
@manrightchea 10 лет назад
Agreed overall. I'm sure the Silverado is a good truck but it seems the PCM could use some improvements from Chevy. It doesn't seem to be lacking in power but the biggest issue is that it seem to make its torque hell high in the powerband. Its either gear hunt like the tranny did in automatic, or hold the thing in gear in manual mode and have your motor scream along at 4100 rpms which is just not good for long term durability. Overall, I like you would take the Ford. That being said, I would have liked to see a RAM 1500 take on this test too, though I would honestly never buy one. My dad had some bad experiences with his RAM back in the day and that has always stuck with me even decades later. I just don't trust Chrysler trucks anymore. Too bad you can't get the Cummins a competing truck.
@SirtubalotTX
@SirtubalotTX 10 лет назад
manrightchea I took a closer look at things and here's the skinny: The Ecoboost is making 365 horses at 5000 rpm and a 420 ft/lbs torque peak at a very low ~2500 rpm~. (Key here) The 6.2 in the GM is making 55 more horses at 5600 rpm and 40 more ft/lbs of torque peaking at a rather lofty 4100 rpm. As you can see, it's the power curve that's hurting the 6.2. I haven't seen a dyno chart for the 6.2 but the little 3.5 just pummels the big V8 at 2500 rpm... a very advantageous rpm for a torque peak when you are towing. The fact that the Ecoboost has it's horsepower peak 600 rpm lower doesn't hurt things either. Bottom line.. the 6.2 is obviously 'more powerful' but it looses in the power curve department. Unless GM can figure out a way to get that torque peak down lower I don't think gearing or PCM changes are going to help much in the context we are speaking of. At any rate and like I was saying earlier.. boost on any engine is a good thing when towing (If it's reliable) and Ford is on to something here. I would like to see them engineer the 3.5 to be stronger and turn up the boost for higher numbers. (400+ horses and maybe 500 torque) If they did, it would probably crush everything else out there. By the way and not to get into too many details.. it's more difficult to engineer a boosted gas engine for towing than it is to do so with a diesel... and that is mostly because of the fuel characteristics of gas vs diesel.

why do you say that? the nissan performed admirably (being 1000 pounds over what it was rated). and had it not gotten stuck behind the cadillac in the beginning, it would have had a time under 9 minutes, it could have possibly even beaten the chevy. but that ford was pretty impressive. my dad has an '06 crew cab titan, with 4 people in it, it comfortably tows a 6000lb+ camper at speeds over 100mph. of course it only got 8.5-10mpg at those speeds. if you want a smooth, comfortable, quite, powerful, offroad-capable truck, take a look at the titan. when not towing there is almost no wind noise at 80mph, it is like a full size sedan! very nice rear seats.

Tow/haul mode will help keep you out of an emergency situation. Again most manufactures the (major brands) program the trucks to engine brake when the truck senses its being pushed down hill. Now for those that don't slow as quickly as possible and change to the lower gear setting. This will force the truck to engine brake.

When towing that much weight in hills, use manual mode because the "D" or drive is for normal driving. When you activate tow/haul mode, it will change the shifts but it is still trying to balance fuel economy and power. If you want full power, take control of the transmission; it's easy, and GM will actually tell you that in your owners manual: "Shift the transmission to a lower gear selection if the transmission shifts too often". If that would have been done, it would have at least matched the Ford in time if not beat it. It was the best down the hill and would have been the best up the hill if operated properly...

I remember that crazy commercial of them stopping a C-130 by throwing a F150 out the back and stopping the plane and truck with their brakes. What is chevy doing to get that braking performance, or is it just a configuration issue by the reviewers. I dont know about you, I rather have more whoa than go.

The Chevy was using engine braking - not the actual brakes.

that ford has attractive headlights and is formed straight, incredible how the much smaller engine has more power with the turbos and it will be much fun to drive similar to a sportscar when it responds much quicker to the pedal. i would like the f-150 with the aluminium alloy body with a closed back as a RV (with a full size normal bed in it, a shower and a small kitchen).
