In this video I have a look at a 2014 GMC Yukon that has a customer complaint of a low brake pedal. It doesn't take long to duplicate the customer complaint and find the cause. These systems work off from a vacuum pump and they are a pretty common failure item. -Enjoy!

Just a heads up I work at a GM dealership and we never cut the belts we just roll them of the pulley using a screwdriver and roll it right back on while turning the engine over by hand at the crank pulley. I know SI instructions say to replace the belt but we never do and have never had any issues. I’ve done several of those pumps and just roll the belt off to get it out of your way and never have to touch the a/c belt...just a thought to help save your customers money...thats two belts they wouldn’t have to buy....

That's GM's MO these days, unfortunately, Wyatt. All the problems they "fixed" on my '07 Silverado under warranty, I ended up having to fix the RIGHT way myself years later. They must be using the trucks as guinea pigs for testing this type of system, for when everything goes electric - seems to be what they're planning to do ... IF they remain in business.

Tired old mechanic What about all the GM's with the metal fuel lines right next to the brake lines you never want to touch ? lol.
@tiredoldmechanic1791
@tiredoldmechanic1791 5 лет назад
@@NY411Info Yes, the fuel lines rust as badly as the brake lines. The NHTSB needs to require all brake and fuel lines to be constructed of materials that don't corrode. The brake lines are more critical because most people only put maximum pressure on the lines in an emergency stop so the rusted out lines only fail in emergency situations.

The reason you're starting to see vacuum pumps on so many vehicles now is a matter of efficiency. The short version is that engine vacuum is a pumping loss because it's essentially created through restriction of airflow (via the throttle plate.) More and more, manufacturers are having the ecm hold the throttle plate as far open as possible to reduce said losses as much as possible. They're able to make up for this through the use of variable cam timing, valve lift, and in the case of Chrysler's Multi Air, individual control of the valves. The downside of course is that engine vacuum is then so low, it can't be used for things like brake boosters, mode actuators, or hub lock and unlock. So the cheap solution is to add a vacuum pump. Supposedly the day will come where they remove the throttle plate altogether but I don't believe anyone has yet. That's my understanding of things at least, someone smarter will likely know more on the subject. Great video as always sir! Happy New Year to you and the O Family!!!

@gearheadautomotivel.l.c.5476 5 лет назад
@@robc8468 You'd think right? Toyota and Land Rover have done that at times on their vehicles. My guess is they do it because a vacuum pump is the cheaper solution from a manufacturing standpoint. Pretty low rent though. Seems to me they could solve the issue of oil getting in the booster with a simple one way check valve in the hose.

Hi, My 2016 Sierra 6.2l with 15,500 miles had the vacuum pump changed aswell. Fortunately under 3 yrs warranty, made a loud noise for several days. I bought a mechanical stetescope from harbor tools and traced the noise to the pump which displayed no warnings on the dash. I pointed it out to the doubtful service advisor who later looked dumb when he informed me it had to be replaced. I was going to go in for pump alone but fuel injector #5 went out during same time and brought me in sooner. Injector however did display engine problem on dash . New vacuum pump installed and the noise was immediately gone. New #5 injector installed now truck seems more responsive when accelerating then when i bought it new. Such Low mileage and several issues besides these two mentioned. In addition, since day one and present when shifting from park to reverse or in drive and then to reverse the whole truck shakes and noise is heard but GMC transmission tech says that's normal 😡 Please read this couples frustration to the link below on vacuum pump issue and hope a recall is in near future for a better designed part incorporating better seals etc. www.carcomplaints.com/news/2017/gm-brake-pedals-hard.shtml Would my bad vacuum pump have affected that my front two rotors have groove marks which are not present in the rear rotors which are smooth? Ah the old vacuum pump. Love me one of those. All the ones that came through the shop, have not had one with oil in the booster. GM use to allow replacement of the AC and vacuum pump belt, but found out they can be removed fairly easily and reused with the "special tool". Literally a piece of nylon that you stick between the belt and pulley and pull the belt off while turning over the crank. The replacement belts come with the most basic and best belt installation tool in my opinion while the factory tool is terrible. I do agree it should be at least a special coverage item. They probably changed the design and part number 8 times on it since new according to the parts guy.

Good diag buddy! Just some info for your bank if you ever run across it. Some ford/Land Rover 2.0 turbo engines use the vacuum pump to close the waste gate of the turbo. If the vacuum pump fails you will have low boost codes. The brake pedal will also feel fine, as it uses manifold vacuum as well with a check valve. P.s. the vacuum pump can size on these engines and snap the intake cam, that drives it.

@@Mr10Alpine Yes at least they were made by reputable companies, not the Chinesium. type. Though Japanese companies are following the US. Some of their brand name stuff(ie Sony, Honda and so forth) are made in China. They tell us it is to their specs. I mean some of the stuff is great from there, but a lot is crap and it feels like they are just trying to scam or rip people off. world.honda.com/news/2005/c050411-eng.html I have one of the engines from Honda made at the plant above.

I have a 2015 sierra with the 6.2L, 72k on the clock and it has this problem. I diagnosed it in my driveway with my ds708(that thing has come in handy so many times...) and ordered the parts. This stupid thing needs a recall since it involves the brakes. I hope you post the video for replacing that pump before I have to do it this weekend! Please I beg you! Thumbs this up so he can see it! 👍

Something else I just thought would help the argument of a recall is that GM has practically admitted to how bad the design is by going with a completely different off the shelf approach... it is an electric over hydraulic setup, I think, from some German company and is used by other manufacturers as well. Read some article somewhere about it. It's worth a google.

Just had this fixed in my 2015 Silverado and GM is now warrantying the new updated vacuum pumps out to 2025 or 125k miles. They were on backorder for a little while, but they're coming in again now. The recall is covering over 3.5 million GM trucks & SUV's.

I am a GM tech. Replaced many a vacuum pump. GM makes us reuse the pump belt, never had a comeback yet for the used belt. Pays 1.2 for the pump replacement only and 3 tenths to diag

Thanks! We have a 2015 Sierra 1500 and will keep a "foot" out for this issue. Our truck has 40Kish miles. Does there seem to be milage range related to this issue?

Y'all should try the stretch fit belts on some of the big trucks I work on. Now those are a pain in the ass.
