In all the works of Brahms that I've heard Yeol Eum Son play (PC2, the Intermezzo Op 117-2, the quintet in F minor and now the quartet in C minor) I have the same feeling: they seem to have been written for her. I think that they fit like a glove to her lyricism, her expression so personal, so passionate, so full of herself. Really, you could say the same about Mozart, Chopin or Beethoven. Everything she plays carries the imprint of her personality, powerful, but able to adapt to each author and each style. In chamber groups she is the backbone. She puts the fire and the sweetness. She puts her heart, and that's why reaches the heart.

I've been head over heels for this piece for the last week (Brahms, I love you so much. You should've live for a hundred years more). Have been a fan of the Piano Quartet no. 1 which was so magnificently played by Argerich and her gang. This performance, I have to say, not a recording-perfect version. But it's the best on RU-vid. I love the quick pacing of the 4th mov. And the violinist Stevlin Roussev did not hold back during the climax on 25:35 (you'd have to be confident in the finger placement since it is a wide leap to a high note. Some violinists would hesitate). Yeol Eum Son certainly held her own. I love her edge and she highlights the piano in places when appropriate. A wee bit of more bass power could send this to nirvana (I guess I'm an Argerich groupie). Jian Wang is excellent. And one last off-topic comment: The violist Maxim Rysanov is the hottest viola player I've ever seen. (don't judge me)

+remsan03 agree with all of the above except that Domus (very recently added to youtube) does it better. i was completely obsessed with this work in my 20s. it's one of those things that just keeps bringing fresh insights with each successive hearing.

Wang still as emotive as his TV debut in Mao to Mozart when stern himself was stunned by his precocious bach recital. His impish boyish melancholic face just looks implanted on an older body! Multinational ensemble adds a spicy unique flavor to this, hall adds a somber, dreamy ambiance to listening experience.

This is the strongest ensemble to perform this masterwork, young Brahms at his most passionate. An all-star team here, they delve into this emotional landscape with complete mastery of the language.

I've listened to a lot of this on youtube, but I can't stop coming back for this one. The second movement has an energy unlike any other, it's incredible. The third movement, at 15:11, is to die for. There is a moment in the fourth movement, around 30:15 that's no holds barred, just incredible. The fact its a public performance and not a recording session adds to the feeling. There's a lot going on, but ultimate clarity in everything, so much listening going on. All the instrumentists are gorgeous, the tone round, the intonation rings. I just can't get enough of this. Would they, the same ensemble, please find another violist and also perform the Dvorak, Brahms and Shostakovich quintets? I would simply love it, already.

PS. I realize on the other hand the pianist overpedals a little bit in the first and third movements ALMOST drowning the strings. Never does - Brahms is extremely tricky because he composes timbres that probably worked very well for the pianos of his day which were not as heavy nor have as great a volume range as they would only 40 years after he wrote this. Yet the pianos were getting close to our modern ones and the technique required is more akin to what would be needed for Rachmaninoff than Schubert.

This will sound strange but though I think this is an excellent performance I disagree somewhat with the interpretation. Sometimes the pursuit for an intense warm tone gets a bit aggressive - and yes a tad more bass - not forward but a bit more pedaling in a few spots would help support the strings. Also, and something I don't see people comment the sound miking can profoundly affect a performance. The miking and sound production might have some of the volumes a little too high in some band frequencies giving the performance a slightly over aggressive sound. So, I am going to place some fault with the sound engineer - the sound is quite good often but it seems the engineer tried a bit too hard to get both intensity and clarity and once in awhile it backfired - making this slightly over-aggressive sound at times. As for the performers - yes a tad more pedaling of the bass and for the string players allowing the tone once in awhile to be a tad more diffuse (just allow for more microtonal variance to create such a timbre - especially in the third movement). But overall a fine and engaging interpretation by top notch musicians. The fourth movement being to me being the strongest of all movements performed.
