This is the finest available performance of this masterpiece. Two giant performers of the current scene. Responsive to the emotional changes in the work, a great one from Rachmaninoff. Both performers record for the same label...could there be a recording of this on the market?
lol, i think the finest performance of the Rachmaninov cello sonata on YT is with Lynn Harrell and Yuja Wang. Rostropovich are also great, but on disk I would go for Gastinel / Aimard, unbelievable playing, from both.
This is more into the music, Rachmaninoff actually favoured clarity in performances of his music, which is what you hear above. You can hear it all. Heard Rostropovich and Harrell, less reflective than Elschenbroich for my money. Son more detailed than the other pianists. Haven't heard Gastinel/Aimard.
