Join me as I take a look at the all-new 2014 Jeep Cherokee.
The Cherokee's styling has proved polarizing to say the least. Chrysler of course has a history of creating love it or hate it designs and I for one am glad to see them take a chance with the Cherokee even though it's not my cup of tea. I admit that the CUV looks better in person than in photos, but it still haven't warmed up to the bent 7-slot grille. What sends most people for a loop however is the lighting arrangement. The thin and raked light modules nest the hood are the daytime running lamps and the turn signals, not the headlamps. You'll find the headlamps in the middle of the bumper cover behind a smoked plastic lens. Further down the front re the fog lights. I think that's the problem with the cherokee's front for me, I can't think of another car that separates these three lamps this far apart. Even the Lexus IS looks a little funny with the DRLs divorced from the headlamps.
While the Grand Cherokee continues it's mission as the "American Range Rover" anyone looking for the Cherokee to be the "American Evoque" is likely to be disappointed. Still the Cherokees interior is class leading in many ways with more soft touch plastics than you'll find in the Mazda, Toyota or Honda competition. Once again styling is a subjective matter but I found the interior to be attractive despite being slightly untraditional. Chrysler fitted the Grand Cherokee's chunky steering wheel and retains the optional leather wrap and heated functionality while ditching the GC's paddle shifters. Oddly Jeep opted for a traditional shifter rather than the Audiesque lever in the GC or the Jaguar-like shift knob in the Dodge line.
The wide front seats are deeply padded, supportive and easily the best in the compact across over segment in terms of comfort. Thankfully the seat engineers have ditched the oddly "dome shaped" seat bottom cushion found in some other Chrysler products allowing you to sit "in" the Cherokees seats, not "on" them. Most Cherokee models get a fold-flat front passenger seat improving cargo versatility but that option is incompatible with the ventilated front seats and four-way power lumbar support for the front passenger. That's an area where the Cherokee sets itself apart from the competition as most compact crossovers skimp on passenger seat adjustability.
If a crossover is supposed to be a cross between a family sedan and an SUV, then the Cherokee is the truest crossover you can buy. Trouble is, most RAV-4 and CR-V shoppers are really just looking for the modern station wagon: something with a big cargo hold and car-like manners. In this area the Cherokee comes up short. It's big, heavy and drives Ike it is big and heavy. But it's not without its charms, the Cherokee is the only compact crossover that is capable of the school run and the Rubicon trail. It's also the quietest and most comfortable crossover and if you're willing to pay, it's the one loaded with the most gadgets and goodies.

Uhm if you want to say that you ride a 4x4 suv just say you drive a cherokee and thats sums it up. Please don't compare rav 4, CRV and other makers because this truck rocks and plus the steering wheel is incredible soft feel and easy to turn plus the v6 engin is such a quiet run and very responsive when you need it. I got the limited version with the dual panel sun roof and it makes you feel like every ride is a vacation road trip. Great job jeep keep it coming.

you have to compare it, because the RAV4 and CRV is a unibody SUV just like the Cherokee is.

We have had our jeep( limited, fully loaded:} now for five years, and we still love it. I have watched video at least 20 times. It drives awesome, handles very good and as for gas mileage...who cares that's why we got the v6. With only 55k on this suv it should last many, many more years.

I just got the got the Cherokee limited v6.i have to a admit the front end is what's got me interested. I've had it a week and I love it. It's more comfortable and nicer than I thought it would be. I thing I'm not crazy about is going from 1 to 2 great feels a little jerky not sure why, but other than that I llove it.

The problem with the cx5 and all the new mazdas is they left out a lot of sound deadening to get those mpg numbers. They are very loud inside compared to the competition and the interior materials leave a lot to be desired.

I have a feeling it's more about saving cost than it is about getting an extra mpg. The CX-5 though is by far the quietest Mazda I've ever driven. And when I say quiet I mean it's bearable.

i saw this car on an intersection and TBH i liked it..when i 1st saw at show i was like this is a bad front design..but when i saw on road ..your eyes goes right towards those bright LED DRL lights which gives a slicker look And that driver flat fold down is kinda nice..just like my Volvo S80 ( altho not completely flat)

I really hated the front fascia of the new Cherokee when it was introduced. Now that I understand it and saw a video at night with all the front lights illuminate...I think it looks hot and very unique. It's now on my list as a candidate for my next car. The Limited offers a number of luxury features I'm looking for.

Excellent review as usual, Alex. No single vehicle checks all the boxes in this segment but kudos to Fiat/Chrysler/Jeep for the range of choices they offer. Kudos, too, for the styling including the infamous (to Jeep traditionalists, especially) front end. Yes, it's odd. But Jeep deserves applause for trying something new in an iconic model. That's always a challenge. Like others, I was initially flummoxed by the headlight/turn signal arrangement. But putting turn signals closer to eye level for other drivers and separating them from headlights for greater visibility is probably a good idea. Wish there were more room in the "way back" but it's difficult to see how that could be done without encroaching on Grand Cherokee territory, especially considering the already beefy size of the vehicle. As you note, there are more appropriate soccer mom and grocery getters in this segment. But for that niche who venture off pavement and away from the suburbs once in a while, Jeep has done themselves proud imo. And that's especially true for folks who have to drive on freeways to get to those off road spots and appreciate the amenities the Cherokee offers.

I have a family of 4 (a nine month old and a six year old and this thing is just about perfect. We pretty much fit everything we need, even for driving a longer distance. The highway mileage is fantastic; on the mostly flat highways where I live, I set the cruise to 75-80 mph and with the 9th gear I got over 33 mpg

I freakin' love the styling of this Jeep versus the CX-5, Santa Fe, and Rav4. Best design out of them all! People, if you don't like it and want a more classy look then go for the Grand Cherokee. This is the Cherokee. A brand on its own essentially.
@dakingofgeese
@dakingofgeese 9 лет назад
I like the front styling. If they made the 7-slot grille flat, it'll look like a Grand Cherokee. If they made the headlights larger, it'll be like the Compass's twin. So the front is completely unique to this car and in a class by itself.

Great review, Alex. I'll get the styling thing over with right away. My wife loves it, I'm neutral, but for you guys with good, long term marriages you know how important that is. I'll never spend $30K plus for something that creates friction. That said, the core of this car is all Jeep. I'll insist on the Trailhawk model for the capabilities. We live in New Mexico and go rock hounding and wheeling in the boonies a lot in our F150 FX4. We take a couple of 1800 mile road trips each year plus a couple of shorter ones, and the highway manners plus the mileage will have us leaving the gas drinking V8 pickup home. I plan on having the 4 cyl Trailhawk, which I will probably have to order one as everyone wants the extra power of the V6 off road. I want the mileage, and with the extra deep low range as a torque multiplier I will have no problems off road. I'm not an "extreme" capability nut as are some Jeep owners, and if it won't go somewhere, I don't want to be there. Plus on the aesthetic side by ordering I'll get the exact color combination I want. So, I for one am glad Jeep went this route in all it's aspects.

The interior is called Vesuvio. It's a combination of Jeep Brown and Indigo Blue leather. Very nice. I also like Grand Canyon with the Grand Canyon Brown and the copper accents instead of the satin silver and chrome that appears everywhere else. If I'm correct, the latter is only available on the Cherokee Trailhawk.

I'll second the request for a Trailhawk review. Also worth mentioning that one big advantage of the V6 over the turbo 4s is the towing capacity. 2000lb max for most of the 4s, 4000lb+ for the V6 Cherokee.

Watched this in the UK (as the Cherokee is on my list of 'possibles' when it launches here in the next few months). So some of the review is not relevant to the UK (e.g. engines) but a really good review. Nice to see such a thorough review. Many thanks.

Thank you for this review...I just bought a 2014 Cherokee limited. I love the look of it, the front end is great for me! I do have an issue with a delay around 20mph. It's been bugging me, but I think I've figured out, I just need to drive a little faster. 😊 In this review you found a delay at higher speeds, which I don't have. I LOVE the 0-60 in 6 secs!! Very helpful when merging! Thank you again Alex! You give a lot of information!

Nice review. The car looks much better when you see it in person. There are couple of things missing in the 2014 limited model available in UAE. No sunroof/moonroof, No memory function for seats, the front passenger side seat is not electronic, The vehicle has remote start function and has keyless entry but no keyless start button.. You need to insert the key to start the vehicle. Great seats and steering. The standard gear shifter is a misfit, they should have kept the electronic shifter. I didnt like the positioning of the inputs to the uconnect system (9:38). They should have kept that hidden.. Otherwise perfect.

Good vid. Alex you never mention the Rogue. I think the Rogue spanks the Rav4 (with its low budget interiors) and the overrated CX5 (the one I test drove had no power at all). Rogue has good mpg and handling and style. Escape is the snappiest but its seating and cockpit are horrible. The Sante Fe is also left out and it is far better (the turbo version) better than the Escape and has great interiors. To me the CRV is meh! Rogue and Cherokee are best value options in this segment. The Cher wins for a wide range of options though...you can get a budget model at 22k or get it fully loaded with a v6 and all.
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 лет назад
The new Rogue wasn't on sale yet when the video was recorded so I felt it was best to not speculate. I should have it soon however so expect a video on that. I honestly forgot about the Santa Fe. The Cherokee is on a different mission (for better or worse) and is trying to be the off-road capable option so it makes comparisons a little tricky.

Another excellent review, Alex! Actually, it isn't the placement of the lights that bothers me on the front. Rather it is the bend or crook in the 7-port grill, the opening between the fogs, and the length of the hood that, to me, make it look unbalanced and incomplete. Like how they screwed up the Compass from rear door, rearward, they screwed this one up from the front door, forward. It isn't terrible, and not a deal breaker. The interior is fantastic (IMO)! Best in the segment.

looks like I will be going on my second transmission. I was traveling for a business training when my Cherokee lunged and banged, and would not shift into any other gear. Regarding the styling.... Well.. I always thought the Fiat Multipla was much too strange and to be honest I think the styling on the Cherokee is too much in that line. It surely makes it stand out of the crowd. But it's also weird looking cousin the Multipla didn't fair well on sales in Europe...

Very well done review. At first I didn't like the front. Now that I've seen one in person I think it's nicely done. If the quality is good then I think they've got a winner. I also like the idea that it's heavier. To me, I feel safer in a heavier car and I bet it's better in the snow.

Personally Im a huge fan of this truck. The updated interior looks nice (esp with the sunroof) . The back end looks nice. But the front end is what I can't deal with. Now Its cool to have the LEDs and the Headlights in different peaces. But the Lip that separates the Grill and the bumper makes it look disgusting. It makes this look like a Granny Truck. If they wanted different, put the front of the Liberty on the Cherokee. But this is horrible.

Likes--front end, heavy large feel, ride and Latitude trim package., 3.2 vvt V6, room enough with back seats down for my 2 GSD girls., Quiet, Cons-- A pillar visibility loss on 2 lane mountain roads dealing with the opposing traffic, Fuel mileage is bad @ 55 mph or less 15.9 as reported by onboard info. No cargo net!!! How cheap of them. I have owned Jeep B4. These new ones fit in anywhere you might go. By the by, the fuel mileage is never a deal breaker for For this Jeep owner. No Jeep Cherokee has 9.7" of ground clearance. The TrailHawk has 8.7". Other 4X4 models have 7.9." if equipped with Active Drive I (no low range) or 8.2" if equipped with Active Drive II. '

Alex do like the 2015 Jeep Cherokee?

Too bad Consumer Reports rated this as "Not Recommended", because of poor fuel economy, 9 speed automatic transmission on 4-cylinder models is sluggish, and a cramped interior. I think that Chrysler needs to advance their 2.4 Liter 4-cylinder engines with direct injection with Flex-Fuel capabilities to improve the fuel economy and reprogram the 9-speed automatic transmission. The Pentastar 3.6 Liter V6 is better in fuel economy and power, thanks to direct injection.

Could they squeeze a few more buttons onto the steering wheel?? Lol. By the way the lower lamps on the front end are driving lights, not fog lights. Fog lights have amber or yellow lenses.

Not in the USA, there is no color requirement for fog lamps and in the Jeep manual Jeep refers to them as fog lamps.

Whether or not they are fog lamps has to do with beam dispersion, not color. The fog lights on my Patriot are clear as well.

I own a Jeep Liberty, and still considering to change it for a new Cherokee Limited, for Financial reasons, do you have any idea of how the limited model compares to the last Liberty Limited model?

Luca A The Cherokee is less capable, most of this is down to the lack of solid axles. The Cherokee also can't be lifted easily due to the drivetrain design.

Go to AUX mode and turn the volume up past 20 and listen to the STATIC ... this happens with or without anything plugged in ! 2015's don't do it , only 2014 with 14.25.0 software , jeep refuses to update the issue ..

What would the fuel economy be like driving in flat states / areas (Florida)?
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 10 лет назад
It would be better however you will probably be running the A/C more which will drop things a hair.
