2014 Mazda 5 Front Wheel Bearing
DIY Wheel bearing replacement
YES, You CAN do this YOURSELF!
With a break in the cold weather, by referral, I'm out in a gravel/dirt driveway again! This time, replacing a floppy, crunchy, wheel bearing, WITHOUT removing the knuckle, in a 2014 Mazda 5. This is a MODERATE DIFFICULTY job for the DIY. There are also MULTIPLE ways to accomplish this task. Aside from possible uneven wear of the ball joint, and assuming the vehicle was in correct alignment to begin with, using this method, there SHOULD NOT be any reason for re-alignment, as no geometry has been changed. If your ball joint shows ANY signs of wear, this would be an exception to the "no alignment needed".
Also, NOW, would be a perfect time to replace that worn ball joint, as well! (alignment MAY need adjustment after replacement of ball joint!)
Forgive me for the portions of the video that have varying speeds. (Otherwise ... Copyright strike!) You'll hear why...(It came from across a small river, about a block away)
This Mazda 5 was the first of two repairs that day at that residence.
Aside from the 'Hub Grappler', All "Specialty Tools" needed to successfully complete this job on your own, are available FREE through a "Loan-A-Tool" program at most major big box auto part stores!
*This is a PREVIEW of what you may be getting yourself into, if you are thinking about doing this yourself. The most challenging part of THIS job, is cutting and removing the inner bearing race from the hub, without damaging the hub/bearing surface, and therefore, this is NOT a job for those unfamiliar with the process. (shown, but not elaborated) ANY damage to this surface, the part SHOULD be replaced.
I HIGHLY ENCOURAGE YOU TO WATCH MULTIPLE VIDEOS ON ANY PARTICULAR REPAIR, BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO DO IT YOURSELF!
Also... There ARE bearing kits also available that include the bearing, a new hub, and sometimes, other new parts such as a new axle nut, a new circlip/locking ring, and in some cases even a dust seal. ALWAYS use quality assured parts! RE-USE of certain parts, is frowned upon. USE COMMON SENSE, PRECAUTIONS, and do so, AT YOUR OWN RISK.

I do most, if not all repairs, with tools that I carry around in my overloaded 1997 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. I perform "On-Site" braking and suspension repairs, amongst other diagnostics and services. My tools consist mostly of Craftsman, a few Stanley, Snap-On, Husky, Pittsburgh, and S&K tools. Scan tools include hand held Actrons, DVOMs, and test lights. I also currently use a Zurich ZR Pro, for advanced and bidirectional diagnostics as well as a Snap-On Verus Pro, for more detailed diagnostics. I'm always expanding my collection, based on need and convenience.

It's so nice to see a pro mechanic do a pressed-in wheel bearing with a hub tamer in somebody's driveway. I thought that design was obsolete in vehicles made after about 2000, but evidently not. I loved your idea to use an old rotor as a base for your jack stands, to protect the driveway and prevent it from sinking down. Is there a seal you should replace on the back side?

You'd think there would have been a seal, but nope. Haven't seen one in years. (Bearing might have lasted longer) I do use a rotor under the jack stand when it might sink and become unstable, or might damage pavement... Thanks for watching!

What a difficult job to do in the shop on a lift and 100 times harder in the field. Great work!

Excellent job! I was wondering what your solution to the stuck inner race on the hub would be in the field.

The stuck inner race was cut with a cut off wheel on a rechargeable grinder, and cracked with a cold chisel. This is the only method I use, as an appropriate torch set up isn't feasible at the moment.(if done correctly with a torch, the bearing race will fall right off)

Thanks for this video, great job. They are difficult bearings to replace even with a press. Your work is excellent, but watching you work with bare hands made me cringe, please wear gloves - our hands are too precious to injure at this stuff.

I'm not sure if i have the same issue. When i turn to go left , like down the road, winding left . My right front tire have noisy wheel bearing sound noise. By looking at your video could I check it the same way if the wheel has a play in it? Thank you for sharing this one. See you again soon.

There isn't always detectable movement... When there is, and it's not a ball joint or a tie rod end, the bearing is likely the culprit.

Crappy rotor design

We just get so much rust from salt exposure, that it fills the space between the edge of the hub and the rotor.
