Some of these reviewers just don't understand the heavy duty commercial truck buyer. Not everyone needs to tow 30,000 lbs, but they do need a vehicle with more capability than a half-ton. $8,000 is a huge chunk of change. With the higher price of diesel, the payback for some people is 200,000k + miles. And please, please, please don't sit there and say that engine is lacking power. I think people forget that, just 15 years ago, the Magum 5.9l had about half the power as the 6.4l Hemi. Hell, the Hemi has roughly the same power as the old 5.9 Cummins. (obviously that power came at a much lower RPM) Somehow we all got the job done with those trucks.

The 6.4 has retarded amounts of power. Maybe some people don't remember the late 70's and early 80's when the 454 in 3/4 ton trucks had 160 horsepower. All big v8 gas motors and diesels alike were way de tuned, and the same weights and tasks and chores had to be done back then. Now this motor puts out 400+ horses and 430 lbft and...."it just isn't enough"....these truck reviews get stupid....if you are constantly towing a d7 dozer....get a dump truck.

I'd prefer this truck over the 6.7 any day for the price. This 6.4 is an absolute beast. Diesels last longer obviously but cost 4 times more to service and maintain. Wouldn't recommend this truck to someone looking for good fuel mileage as that just isn't possible with it's size and especially towing. This truck is a beast... 475hp out the gate and pulling not too much more weight than a 1500 on the heavy chassis. These 6.4's love air, I'd upgrade the entire exhaust system. Long tube headers, high flow cats and rip them stupidly massive factory mufflers off for some glass packs. Port and polish the intake with a decent cold air filter and chip. You got a 550hp hemi truck with minimal expenses and 10% increase on fuel efficiency.

I have the 2500 w/6.4 hemi....I am getting average 17 mpg empty and 12 pulling my 30 ft. 8500 pound trailer, with no issues and plenty of power for the smoky mountains. I have a feeling this kid is just a Rollin coal fan....and no gas engine would ever satisfy him anyway

I own a 2012 ram 2500 with the 5.7 and tow a 32 ft 8700lb travel trailer.

"Jump out" in front of somebody while pulling a trailer? You must not tow often.

The reason the even offer the gas engine is to keep the entry price down, it just a marketing move than anything. They should offer the 6.4 on the 1500, that would be a beast.

"Only" puts out 429 pound feet of torque? are you kidding me? Were dropped on your head during infancy?

This review is bullshit when it comes to towing. I tow a 7000 Lbs travel trailer with my 2014 6.4L 2500 and it pulls it like nothing is hooked to it, i don't even feel the trailer and the motor doesn't either. They really did a good job with this truck. Now he says 12,000 Lb on max towing i was curious what it was so i got out my manual and it says for the 6.4L Automatic across the board its 16,450 towing and 7,220 payload it talks nothing about gear ratio. I know a guy who pulls a 10,000 pound fifth wheel and he says he has no problem what so ever. If you want to spend the extra $9,000 for diesel then go for it but if your not doing some serious towing then id save my money.

"I think a truck pulling a trailer should drive like a sports car.... so no, I don't like this one". Yeah..... ok. LOL

dumb review. Who buys a 2500 and doesnt tow? I just did. I bought 1 and never tow anything! So dont generalize. I had no use for the diesel. This is an awesome, powerful hemi truck!

LOL..unless you are towing a loaded livestock trailer or a couple bob cats around 75%+ of the time, the 6.4 is more than enough for a daily driver that hauls medium/light loads . I own a 2014 6.4 RAM 2500 and a duramax btw

OK just for the record i am a diesel enthusist and not some tree huggin hippy. Now for the "short(ish) facts ). Break down a stock diesels mpg and i promise you its no where near what this guy thinks. I see new diesels (loaded or not ) get 8-13mpg HWY!!! I have drove all of them and I know plenty of people that load them to their 20k lbs. Weight limit and they are just as doggy and thirsty as a gas engine at their 12k weight limit. When it comes to brand new, (unless you are hauling trailer daily cross country even then it's debatable) gas is all the average Joe truely needs. And yes diesels can put down larger numbers with better mpg. Now on the flip side (remember talking new here) to get any of those improved numbers from your diesel, you need things such as a cold air intake, uria bypass/delete, egr delete, a $1,000 tuner in order to free up that exhaust and not have a ton of lights pop on and send your computer into all kinds of crazy. then in turn these mods void your warranty. Yea sure these are the 4 "normal everyday" mods that are done anyways but that's not the point here, point is stock for stock, pound for pound these trucks are pretty much dead even. Honestly by time you get the diesel option and the mods to gain those better mpg and power numbers. At this point you more then likely just put $10k-$13k onto the initial truck cost. And now you should look at parts cost, which typically is around double to maintain a diesel. Food for thought.

With the 4.10 differential the 6.4 works very well for towing

I just test drove the 6.4 hemi. Lots of power off the line. Plenty of torque. Diesels are complicated the gas is more expensive. If you really need them, then there isn't much choice, but if you really don't need the extra power, save the $$$

My first Ram 2500 4wd had the 5.7 Hemi. Not nearly enough engine for such a truck. The way I put it was the 5.7 liter Hemi V8 is the best V6 I've ever owned! I finally had enough of it and by then the choice was the 6.4 or 6.7. Looking at the numbers for the 6.4 it was not a really large difference in torque from the 5.7. What FCA should have done was slip the SRT version of the 6.4 in it instead of the nominal, lower powered version they used. I went with the Cummins and have been very pleased with it. Yes, it's expensive, but with good maintenance, it will last and last and last. You get your money's worth.

There are countless 6.4 & 5.7L Ram HEMIs out there pulling trailers AND plowing in the winter, easy. One of them has been right outside my window at home doing work for years and years. Adding a cat-back exhaust helps make things less restrictive and there's a slight gain in power as a result. On top of that it revs high and sounds pretty good too 👍🏽
