I drove a '15 Grand Cherokee with 60K miles and it felt loose and cheap. I bought a '12 Touareg TDI with 78K miles and it felt much more solid and quality. Now I understand why there is such a strong following on these VW machines.
The Jeep has only 14 pound feet of torque more than the Touareg but it comes in at a higher rpm and the Jeep is 400 pound heavier than the VW is. This is why I find it funny that Sami says the Jeep has more torque than the VW and "you can really feel it". Really? I find that hard to believe.
One thing people over look is the Axle Ratio. Sure the Jeep has a slightly lower ratio of 3.45 to the VW 3.27 but even that small of a difference can be felt when punching the gas.
The styling of the Jeep looks overwrought and gaudy. VW has a clear win here, with it's classy & sophisticated lines. Hard to beat the Infotainment system on the Jeep, but the VW wins again for overall interior quality...some cheap plastics In the jeep, especially around the cupholders and the lower dash/doors
I'd buy the Toureg, it looks better, it's built better, and VW has been making diesels for years, Chrysler on the other hand hasn't been making diesels for years. The VW may be more expensive, but you're getting a better quality car which to me is worth the extra money
thank you for saying that lolz watch all the review here just feel so funny how American still can not understand the beauty of the diesel , and just keep thinking it is over priced , it is over priced, god!!!
Yea I don't understand why people in North Americans don't pay more and I live in Canada, I wish there where more diesel cars to buy. The Passat TDI is such a nice car but expensive, but I would pay the extra money for one
So the electronics for the engine in the jeep will stop working, or the engine will have rust holes in it after the first time it goes through a deep puddle of water, basically what Top Gear always says about Italian cars, the electronics stop working or it rusts
yea, VW still has the best production diesel engine in the world now, and I believe German knows diesel better than Italian. lol even someone said it is build by an Italy company.
Take the Touareg as it drives wonderful and does not feel heavy. Corners well, pulls good and is quiet on the highway. I was surprised how easy it is to park and drive in tight spaces. I just love it.
I would pick the Touareg over the jeep in a heart beat. it's so much classier and luxurious. if I saw the two parked side by side I'd say the person with the Touareg has more money (appearance wise). the only two things I can see the jeep has that the VW doesn't is the cooled seats and air suspension. but nobody will ever really use the air suspension for anything but snow. it's not a bad thing that VW sells less than the Jeep. it makes it more exclusive...my parents are car hunting and I'm suggesting the Touareg all the way
After two months of research.. I bought a 2014 VW Touareg TDI Lux. I drove the Grand Cherokee and I did not like it.. it felt like I was almost driving a suburban.. the material felt cheap inside. The Touareg is refined.. it is a solid vehicle. The drive, turns and speed feel like I'm driving a high-end sports car. No car wins here.. try them out yourselves first. The 2014 VW Touareg was considering one of the best vehicles in the world for that year. Good luck.
I've driven both and the Touareg definitely is a better driving vehicle if you ever experience a "corner" or a road that doesn't have a bend in it. For me, I'll spend the extra money for a Touareg, Audi Q5 or an X5.
Adaptive Cruise Control is actually pretty common now...most Touaregs in Europe have it...I have in on a 2013 Audi a3.... Air suspension is also one common option....maybe half of the touaregs have it... The rest of the options are also available...such as ventilated seats etc....
Dinu G In that case you are right but a caveat. If you are travelling in deep snow or deteriorating road conditions(which most wont be doing) then you definaitely should get AWD. However, I too live in the north and currently drive a sports car as a daily driver, I assure you proper tires and patience will still get you to your destination. This was more evident this past brutal winter.
All the motoring writers in Australia all say they get numerous complaints about the Grand Cherokee from their readers regarding problems with this vehicle. They are not recommended in Aus. at all.
Sam Sabastian got my 2015 grand cherokee limited 8 months ago and I've never had a single problem. It snows like crazy where I live and I never had to dig out my car. It practically parks itself because the backup camera is so precise.
The reliability for the grand Cherokee has been terrible with the new 8 speed. Even the VW which is not known for reliability is much better. The Touareg had the better interior, certain parts of the grand Cherokee interior feel very bad for its price tag. I do wish the Touareg had air suspension in the US, then it would be a complete winner.
+Lathan Starnes Not sure if youve turned on your tv in the last month or so but VW has some issues far beyond that of the worst Grand Cherokee could muster.
+Lathan Starnes This is a flat-out lie. Both cars have good rankings, but the Jeep gets some reports from folks who off-road them. The VW is basically just a BIG AWD car, while the Jeep is true off-road capable. Jeep will always get more issues reported because of people abusing them (as expected). Our Jeeps have been more reliable than previous Subaru and Audi Q7. BOTH cars have great warranty packages available, so this is all a non issue anyway. Buy the VW if you want a more upscale road car with lots of room. Buy the Jeep if you need more serious snow & off road capability. They're both very good cars. For now I would not own a VW because of the fact that they lied about their technology and got caught acting despicably.
you must compare the touareg equiped with air suspension package with this overland jeep. VW introduced it in 2004. I'm still driving one, it is almost perfect.
what you worry about is like 10 years ago man, have you ever even drive one of those modern diesel cars nowadays? You barely hear that diesel noise( outside sure you do, inside you wont notice too much ) and for the fuel price? have to tell you, sometimes even cheaper than the gas! Plus, it is not only more efficient, diesel engine is more reliable than the regular gas engine
VW quality more than makes up for gimmicky Chyrslers "equipment" that you dont necessarily know if it doesnt or does not work. You essentially gave the offroad to the Jeep because it's a Jeep and has a offroad knob. The jeep won because it was cheaper in this test. The better truck has the same features when optioned out and cost a little more money, surprise--You Get what you pay for.
and them catching fire or rolling backwards has happened how many times? not many. VW sells not even a quarter of how many grand Cherokees are sold so I'm guessing jeeps small issue hasn't screwed their sales.
i have a 1994 grand cherokee no major repairs have ever been done just regular maintenance. so i have to agree with steven bryant where is the VW counterpart? oh wait there isn't one. jeeps are extremely reliable and jeep doesn't lie about their emissions unlike VW.
If you want to see which one is actually the better car watch the 2 of them take the elk test or moose test where the grand Cherokee almost rolls over lifts tires off the ground is uncontrollable at any speed the touareg just slipped through the test with barely a movement of anything
It seems everyone forgets the the most important factor of all; COST OF OWNERSHIP. Hate to say it, but you will get better resale out of the VW and a much lower lower COO. The Grand Cherokee does not have the track record of VW for the long haul of ownership. When I run my vehicles well over 100,000 kms, I need to know what the cost per km will be.
Ima a Chrysler , dodge etc fan but the touarage looks like a pretty nice German SUV but falls behind in some tech. I hope the next generation fix that problem and up the looks in the interior and exterior.
I think you guys totally skipped the fact the vw is actually easily as capable as the jeep and also has air adjustable suspension and locking front rear and center differentials strange you would leave that out
Any Jeep short of the Rubicon requires soooooo many upgrades to make it do any serious off roading that you might as well buy a Land Rover. Here's my list. I think this should be a video. Hummer H1. Land Rover Defender. Mercedes G Wagen. Range Rover. Discovery/LR3/LR4. Jeep Wrangler Rubicon. VW Touareg/Audi Q7. Porsche Cayenne can do it but it gives up a bit for street performance. The rest of the Jeeps are not hard core off road vehicles fresh off the show room floor. The proof is in the aftermarket segment. There is an endless array of upgrades for Jeep to help it tackle the terrain. Except for the new Cherokee. Chrysler upgraded one and said it cost them a couple of hundred thousand to do it. They had to cut the body and you can only raise the vehicle another inch or so. So if you want real off road ability. You can buy the Jeep and spend the equivalent of a good used Jeep in upgrades or just go buy from the list I made. Lol
Ohh the vehicles in the normal wrangler competition field would be. Hummer H2/H3. Land Rover Freelander/LR2/Evoque. These vehicles a long with your average Jeep under 45k is for the ones who want the look but won't do anything other than street driving, wet grass or a gravel road.
Antwion Cooper you obviously haven't seen GC in the sticks! Come down to Australia and I'll make you eat your words about jeeps grand cherokee. The only thing I've added to my are rock sliders and more aggressive tyres.
Antwion Cooper for half the amount of money you would save with the GC over the mall crawlers your mentioned, you can outfit a GC that could go where the others could never dream of going. They make tons of aftermarket items for "Offroad" because people buy them to go offroad and there is a market for it. Putting a winch bumper on a Touareg, and half the other 4x4's you mentioned, is wasted money. On a Jeep it is a useful item because you can get into terrain that you may need it, the others can't even get there to be able to use it.
Resale is lower on the Jeep and rated under the "Not buy" category. It was part of the Dodge/Fiat group that used taxpayer money to get out of receivership. Yes, vw, BMW, Audi, etc did something similar, but then Isuzu, GM etc made vehicles that were knowingly unsafe. The VW looks cleaner and also ran the Dakar rally, BAJA etc, which this Jeep could never do. Yes, I know they were modified.
I got 800 miles with full tank for my vw TDI, and did not pay 59k, I paid 55k for the non R-line version shows in the video, everything else are the same
You all are crazy if you think the VW looks better than the Jeep. Maybe the interior, but you'll never get me past the god-awful exterior to find out in person!
I would take the Touareg in this comparison, but offer up the Grand Cherokee with the 5.7 HEMI (for roughly the same price) and I'm a Jeep guy all day.
Can the new corporate grill on Volkswagens be any more boring? Build quality is a nice thing to have but I don't think bland equals "sophisticated" when it comes to looks. However I do think the Jeep has the opposite problem. Gaudy in this trim level and overstyled. I preferred it before the 2014 refresh.
Jeep is way overdone. (they both are somewhat). Get rid of the Prissy high society garbage that makes these vehicles cost so much and make a simple yet functional and affordable model.
Scotty would head out to the shed, fish out his stepladder, and climb to the top - just to kick me in the nuts for buying either of them. ...But it'd be worth it to own a Touareg.
According the the LA Times, over 60% of VW Touareg buyers are women and I can see why. But I still prefer the Grand Cherokee. Practical and stylish at the time. I just wish the price was lower. I'll wait for a used one.
Better interior on the Volkswagen when it doesn’t have a leather stitched dash board or door panels like the Jeep??? These reviewers of ALL kinds do not understand cars at all. How is soft touch plastic better than leather? A clicking knob can’t makeup for that 😒
I tried both (diesel) and say that VW is a sick old donkey, while GC - real war elephant. And don't forget about price in USA. 60k vs 52k with more options and air suspension
As for the Cherokee having more 'bling', that is not exactly a good thing. More bling-bling, more breaky-breaky. You need a manufacturer that has a proven track record of all the extras not costing you a fortune over time. I've been in the Jeep and it's not even close to my 2007 A6 Audi for fit and finish - way too much plastic, ill fitting interior, vented seats that didn't work, rough idling engine. That was enough to scuttle any thought of a test drive. This new Jeep is exactly that - new. New suspension for the Jeep, new 8 speed, - yowsers! I'd like to give it a year or two to see how they play out. On the other hand, Vdub has had the bugs worked out of the Toureg for years. Handles better, lighter, better fuel economy, tows more, classier interior, hmmm, seems like a easy choice for me. Heated steering wheel a must?? Nah, wear gloves! So please explain to me how you guys rated the Jeep as the winner???
Once again proving my point. The vehicles I named doesn't require upgrades. You drive off the show room floor and straight into action. Lol granted yes, the average person who buys any of these vehicles just want to be seen so sadly most won't see action. overall they are all excellent. Just depends on what level of hell you trying to get in.
They have decided to keep the grand Cherokee srt because it sells the best. Only the chrysler 300 srt is going away now. I read an article about it online.
VW is too ordinary. VWs are much more expensive to fix. I'd definitely get the Jeep between these two. It looks very nice inside and out and just owning it would make me want to find somewhere to drive it off road. I wouldn't buy a diesel in the US. More maintenance, more expensive fuel, just more of a hassle. You've gotta put urea in it and all that. Not all gas stations have it. More expensive by a significant amount. Just doesn't make sense.
Jeep GC offers better value for the money, it's sightly cheaper, the interior is better looking even if it has plastic is some parts, the outside is WAY better looking also, it's has a bigger list of features AND it can really go off road, i don't see any "sophistication" on that VW, it's nice but not sophisticated, and definitely not worth the money.
maximus10463 Toureg is the better vehicle = It's better built, Better engineered/developed & it drives soooooo much better than the boat ( i mean jeep ). Is it worth the money ? If you can afford these sort of cars - YES !!! The fact is - You don't need the R Line to have a Toureg that drives well = The SE version is more than good enough & is CHEAPER than the R line too. It's a NO BRAINER really !!! That is all :)
