In this video i fixed my BMW by replacing the thermostat in it. before i changed this part out my car would not go above 140 degrees. it was reduced power and the fan would run constantly.

Hey Camaromac, thanks for the video. I have a P0128 code on my 2008 X5. I should have taken your advice and replaced the coolant sensor first but went straight to the thermostat. Nothing seems to have improved so I'm now going to try the coolant sensor. When looking at parts, it seems there is a sensor on the cylinder head like you showed in your other video but there is also a sensor in the lower rad hose. Wondering if you have any knowledge the two sensors and if you think it's worth replacing both. Thanks!

axesomebody my situation was weird because the temp was staying low so I thought it was the sensor, but it was the thermostat. With the parts being cheap in my case it might be worth it, and if that doesn’t fix it, I wouldn’t know where to go from there other than making sure there is no air in the system.

CamaroMac thanks. I’ve ordered coolant sensor for the one at the cylinder head. Any idea where the coolant sensor is at the lower dad hose? Checked out some online vids and forums and found for the 4.8l but seems different than the 3l

I was just looking at the coolant sensor by the cylinder head and the connection seems loose. Should the connector click in to reattach? It doesn’t seem to click in. Not sure if I’m doing something wrong or if a clip broke when replacing the rad?

Great video! My 2016 with 90,000 miles do I need to replace just the thermostat or the whole housing as well? I have no codes or nothing wrong with it. I'm just doing a flush, so I thought might as well replace it.

It’s a complete unit, you replace it all together.

@@poundermonster they say the water pump goes out 70-100k. You can replace it as preventative maintenance, really your call, it’s the electronics that mess up on it when it goes, it stays running and kills your battery when the water pump starts to go,

Before replacing your thermostat where was the temp staying at? I have a 2015 and mines stays at 198 degrees which is at the quarter line mark but I’m not getting any cel on for the thermostat...so you think I’m good??

The temp was at the very minimum on the gauge. Didn’t got up at all. Normally when they go out you have an issue with getting it to heat up at all. So I can’t speak to yours, but worth looking into

89five3five that’s kind of a hard question, most would say when it breaks. That’s what I would lean to. Or if you are doing a major service you can do it then.

Initial research into this seems to suggest around the 55-60k mile range. I’ll be doing this in my 2015 bmw m235xi here soon as I got code readout p0128.

Why is OP using SAE sockets? I am a mechanic and I just sold /traded ALL my SAE sockets back to the snap on truck. On any modern car you just don’t need me at all!
