Thanks for the info! I’m having this issue as well! I called my mechanic and he said the same thing-Limp Mode! He has the same truck! I’m relieved that it didn’t stall-I decided not to drive it-didn’t know wth was going on!!
Yes, sometimes the memory farts out, and you have to help the PCM relearn the idle levels by disconnecting the neg. cable, jumper wire from pos. post to neg. cable only for a minute or so; reconnect the neg. cable, then key on for a half minute, then restart the motor and go for a drive, not too soft, but not to aggressive on the pedal, so the idle levels on the throttle body get reprogrammed. I never experienced limp mode, but the aforementioned steps is what I did after removing the throttle body, cleaned it thoroughly, then reinstalled it. The throttle body looked clean from the outside. Don't let that fool you. It's the gunk (oily film, carbon, and varnish) on the inside that you can't see that needs a lot of attention. While you're at it, also do a Mass airflow sensor cleaning by getting the CRC MASS Airflow Sensor cleaner spray for that sensitive part in the airtube closely located near the air filter. Spray it a few squirts, then do it again. Perhaps remove it from the airtube and spray it for a few seconds, let it dry thoroughly, then reinstall. MASS airflow sensor works hand in hand with the throttle body. My current situation is the Auxiliary Trans Pump that needs replacing due to the start/stop function. Costs approx. $750 to have dealer do it. I always hated that part of the truck, and now want to dismantle that start/stop feature for good. I urge you Ford drivers to do this before your pump goes belly up.And it will. Ford says they give you a strong battery to handle the excessive start/stops, and a large heavy duty starter. But what about that girly girl Auxiliary Trans Pump? Give me one that won't wear out! OK, I'm done ranting.
I stick with my 2013 bc of how much I despise that stop and start bs. There is NO WAY that saves gas or engine wear. Stopping and starting it over and over is going to go through both (gas and parts) rapidly.
I am having the same issue right now. So glad I found this video. My code was only P160A for several limps and then today it did the throttle code. I have the same scanner as you and have had no luck going back to stock or disconnecting the battery or anything. Today I was ready to pull the trigger on a new throttle body after the new code but I will try the KAM on my turner first. Thanks
2015 F-150, code P2112 limp mode complete loss of power and engine stall first time @ 35 mph next times limp mode but would "idle", but while on interstate trying to merge, nearly rear ended by several cars and semis new throttle body and gasket, reset idle KAM memory, let it idle 15 minutes, drove for 5 minutes at various speeds 35-50 mph without flooring it working better so far, no idle stumbles which has been happening since last year some time

There are different reasons for the PCU going into limp mode,make sure you don't have any other codes leading to the PCU going into limp, if so you might have to chase those down first.
Have a 2015 F150 3.5 ecoboost, and same thing with limp mode. Drilled the hole in intercooler, and worked with no issues for a long time. recently limp mode happened again , not sure if intercooler weep hole blocked , just bought new intercooler and will replace soon. My truck does not have a Tune and it still has this issue… Added a catch can , and it does accumulate a lot of oil!!!

@@justinmetzler2532 unfortunately, no. When I finally decided to take it to a shop, I could not get it to stall and present all the symptoms I listed. Two different shops, could not duplicate the issue, and that it has not happened since! While I am happy is no longer doing it, I am still nervous, because I didn’t fix anything, and it could happen at any time…
Same thing happened to my F150 after I initially installed the BBK Throttle Body. Did everything you did and it still did not help. Ended up installing the stocker back on, tried contacting BBK for support with no luck. I have similar mods and tuned by MPT, which I am not blaming them. I believe it has to do something with throttle body. Hope it’s fixed. Thank you for sharing, first I have seen.
I just don't see the throttle body going bad. It's not that complex. If anything I thought maybe the microchip inside. But I swapped that and it still failed. You said you did the KAM reset and idle relearn and it still did it?
yeah my 2011 MKX with 30 K went into 2 mile per hour limp mode on highway, very scary! turned off for 2 min and restated with no codes. Dealer says when restarted it cleared the problem code. Replaced the throttle body and it seems ok. i hope that was the fix .

Thought it only happen to me as I drove my 2014 F-150 eco boost uphill through the Arizona mountains in the evening just recently in 108 degree weather , as I was cruising along at 65-70 mph and all of. Sudden the truck felt like a hard miss then again or stammer then so I canceled the cruise control and accelerated and the truck went dead no lights , no engine and no brake all then the check engine light came on , I threw it in neutral and turn to accessory then coasted for a couple of second turn the engine over it started and check engine light went off. Since then I haven’t been back on the freeway but Acting the same on the surface streets.
This is happening on my truck right now. Dealer can’t figure out what’s wrong with it. I have new front fuel pump and throttle body great. They also reset the computer and They simply can’t find out what wrong. Hopefully they’ll get straighten out
Mine is all stock , the wrench came on dash no power and I noticed shift selected light wasn't on then it came back on I made it home ..... I'll disconnect battery when I get home and try that ..... like you did ..... then replace throttle body , I have noticed a tps issue weeks ago when pulling out of a parking lot ....
I hope it's fixed for good bc this was the worst, dumbest and most dangerous thing. I am still under warranty and the service manager is pretty good to work with knowing most of my mods. I just don't have the time to let them try and figure out what's wrong. Would of took them a month!
15 f150 2.7 L and this does happen when I am really pushing my truck or going above 80. For me usually when this happens it just loses that acceleration and makes the engine go into over time. I havent gotten it checked out yet but will soon.
This happened to me like 6 times today on the way home from work. Even had a cop pull up behind me . Cop let me go and it happened a couple more times. Decided to shut off the ac and went to manual shift to keep the rpm’s up. Got me home but the engine light is still on.
I wish there was a definitive explanation as to what is causing this (underlying issue). Ive reset the KAM a bunch of times and eventually the issue comes back.

My truck a 2015 6.2 L 250 went into limp mode because a rubber disc the size of a dime fell off the Brake pedal arm and the brake switch couldnt contact the Brake pedal arm and turn off the brake lights . So the Limp Mode sensed the unsafe operation of brake lights indicating holding the braked while exceeding 50 mph . The solution came when I saw the switch contact disc on the floor . Glues it back on and runs great . No Codes but brake lights wouldnt go off until fixed.
My 2013 Supercrew 4x4 went into “limp mode” twice recently and then coincidentally I had to have it towed in for front brake failure (caliper bolts failed) so I asked them to address the power loss too. They’re replacing the fuel pump. Idk if that’s just the high pressure part or the part in the tank as well. I might mention that earlier this summer the transfer case and rear differential were rebuilt and the front hubs replaced. Fortunately I have an extended warranty. Truck has only 69,000 miles and I’m the original owner.
Any luck? my 2016 5.0 got stuck in 5th gear limp mode twice, and once In 3rd gear. (1 time per day, 3 consecutive days)... pulled over, shifted to park, turned off and back on. Shifted fine after.

2016 5.0 owner. ** has anyone had a transmission fluid change a couple months prior to this issue? I changed my fluid, dealer did a module reset (truck had to learn when to shift like new again) - now wrench light. So, I’m wondering if others have had some transmission fluid and filter changes which may attribute to this problem?

I have a 2018 f-150 platinum with the 3.5 eco boost. I’m on my third set of cam phasers, I’ve been a lifetime ford owner. The motors are great when they work but phasers will constantly have to be replaced every 40k miles. Good luck, I’m selling mine when the fix it the fourth time.
Good info. Do all of these models have hill assist??? I’ve noticed in most cases the truck is parked on a hill or slant. The sensors are extremely sensitive to that. Resetting the bank should solve. Although the chip in throttle body fails do to this hill assist!!! It has to be reset. Ford needs to recall the issue!!!!
I’m experiencing this now and live in southern Louisiana. As flat as it gets. No mods on this one, everything is OEM. I don’t know enough about this vehicle (my dad loaned it to me after my vehicle failed, he has multiple vehicles) so I don’t know about the specs. It’s a 2011 4 door XL.

Thanks for the video. Been trying to figure out what's wrong with my truck. Died in the middle of a intersection yesterday during rush hour. . I was dumb founded by it. Truck has tried killing me twice now. haha I thought maybe it was spark plugs, so I changed all of them, still have the issue but will try this out now.
@@royevans9904 Did you buy manufacture plugs by chance? I bought off brand plugs and my truck ran, but I couldn't go faster than 50 without it dying or losing power. Had no power going up hill. So I bought manufacture plugs as well as changing the heads on the spark plug coil. When I was talking to a ford mechanic he said every time you change your plugs. Change the coil heads/seal. They are like 4 or 6 bucks for little box that has the seal and the head that touches the spark plug. Once I done that my truck has been running awesome.

Hmmm… sounds to me like someone was putting on after market (go fast parts) and this messed up the handshaking ability of the management system. Tuners, bolt on throttle bodies, air intakes, etc. Maybe just leave everything as it should be and these issues may not arise. I am sure there are those that will disagree and blurt out all sorts of technical jargon, none of which makes sense. However thank you for this interesting look at what not to do or change on my f150 3.5 …
Mine just did that it it way more going on. My lights are randomly flashing and tailgate will drop. Alarm is going off too. I’m not sure what’s going on but my truck did go into limb mode but with the extra stuff going on. (Flashing might and tailgate randomly opening when it’s parked. After that the alarm starts going off) I tried taking the battery off but that does nothing but make the alarm go off when I try to hook it back up
@@PlumpyWhale a 1/16th inch hole drilled in the very bottom of your Turbo Charger's Intercooler. The intercooler captures some blow-by and condensation which gets fed to the turbos and causes the misfires, which puts you into limp mode for a couple minutes. The weep hole lets the fluid out so only air gets thru to the turbos.
@@PlumpyWhale No worries, and you're quite welcome! Normally (my experience) Limp Mode occurs when you hit WOT from a dead start, like entering a freeway. I never had it happen just riding smooth and easy. The tiny weep hole doesn't seem to affect the turbo pressure, so i've had no issues at all since.
I was starting to question if I did something wrong. To clarify, the truck is still on, just won’t accelerate and once pulled over and you put it in park, does it shake like crazy? I’m borrowing my dads F150 and it did this only a few times before, I never got a check engine light. Today I got an oil change, ran some errands and a few miles from my house this happened. I shut it off, started it up and same thing happens. After the 3rd or 4th time, the check engine light was on. I’m a 105lbs mom and had my 3 daughters with me. Thankfully I live in the country (it happened once in the city, in the middle of a ghetto). Thank you for sharing this info. I do all work myself (oil change today only because I had so much to do, I just brought it in). But this is a safety issue for sure!
Every time it did it for me, it would flash service advancetrac and I lost all power. After turning the truck off for a minute, it would fire back up and resume normal operation. Very random but ended up being the throttle body. Seems unlikely because I had an aftermarket bbk. If yours is similar, I recommend buying an oem ported TB from eBay. Best bang for your buck. @@_willalexander.88 I made the mistake of buying a Buick Enclave a year ago. 6 months later, motor was blown. The seller washed the title. So this truck is just to get by while I paid down my loan for the SUV. Both of my grandfathers were mechanics, so it was embarrassing enough to admit I fell for a scam. But, my dad keeps his vehicles top notch. He has another F150 and it has over 300,000 miles on it. I’m confident he would only buy OEM. But growing up with him, he would be disappointed if I came to him and didn’t know how to fix something on a vehicle. This one I couldn’t figure out. I don’t have the manual either. But I’m going to hook it up to the OBDII in a little while to see what code it’s showing.
@mandybs9899 I would hope your dad isn't going to be disappointed. It's a very attractive feature for a woman to be working on her vehicles. I'm sure he can acknowledge your efforts. I learned a lot about my f150 by doing a lot of modifications.
@@_willalexander.88 as luck would have it, the check engine light went off. But it lost power less than a miles from home. I sit with my grandmother during the day, she has advanced dementia. My uncle lives next door and has a good spot for me to get under the truck with no issues.
I am writing about my story in case it helps others in some way. I have a 2013 Escape SE 1.6 and it has been going into limp mode starting 2 years ago with approx. 35,000 mi. The first time it stopped, I waited for 20 mins and it started up fine and I drove it for about 7 months before it happened again. Another 6-7 months and same thing happened. Last week I was crossing the boarder and it happened in the line up... I waited 5 mins moved up in line and stalled. It did it all the way through the boarder and every 100 yards driving after that. I Stopped for 1 hour, started up and it has been running fine since then. This limp mode seems to only happen when going slow, driving in town or just starting up, it never happens when driving on the highway at a higher speed. BTW I did take it into the dealer after it happened the first time, but nothing showed up to repair. Thank you for your tip as I will try it.
Hey, so they tuned my 2017 f150 to 93 and also e85 with it stocked . Now I'm getting a code where the wrench comes on and the transmission starts to messes up and that with the truck running fine. It's like the gears are not running right it jumps to a different gear . Can u help me .
Try to read the codes. If not, I'd at least re load or change the tune and go from there. Not sure if the e85 has anything to do with it running weird.
I’m having the exact problem with my 2013 F150 and it keeps Going into limp mode and I have to pull off to the side and turn off the truck restart it and hope it doesn’t come back on , but again this morning it happened 2x , I’ve taken it to the body shop and they said it was the spark plugs so we got them replaced and them a week later it started happening again , So since you beat this terrible limp mode do you think I should reset the idole not quite sure how

I have a ford Explorer 2013 also going to limp mode I only have 65k miles, and code was P2111 , throttle body Actuator open, dealer charge me $145 just for checking, and didnt find anything, I drove another 100 miles with no problems
I am having the same problem with my 2018 F150. It has been ten months since you posted. Did you ever have the problem again after reseting the KAM? I have already replaced the throttle body, lasted a couple of weeks and back where we started. Dennis
@@_willalexander.88 They already have and they dont have a clue. I have learned more in two hours online then their mechanic knows. Thanks, going to take it to a local guy and him reset the KAM. I just disconnected the battery for an hour but i dont know if that resets the KAM.
@@DD-kx7dh I tried the battery bc I read that on a forum. It didn't work. Instead of paying someone, buy that tuner and diy. That way you can tune your truck and hopefully resolve your issue. Nice to have if you every have a CEL.

I have a 17' f150 3.5 Eb when I punch the gas in higher gears the engine just stops and I lose all power and I get a hillstart assist not available warning. Is it the throttle body.
@@marksantiago9832 I find it hard to believe that it is mechanical related instead of software being that I have an aftermarket bbk TB when it all happened to me. Some say they replaced the TB and it was fixed. I don't believe they ever revised the TB though. Try the KAM reset if you can like I did/make sure connector is clean and tight. If not, I recommend an aftermarket TB and install yourself. That way your getting a little more performance out of the ordeal GL

This is why you don't mess with tuning and putting new chips in newer motors unless you're a professional. I've had no problems out of my 1st gen 3.5 ecoboost motor but I've done 0 mods other than a catch can.
Ask them what different about the new TB. See if there different part numbers. I'm told they never revised a new TB. Are you able to try the KAM reset with an sct device?
Replacing the throttle body by the dealer fixed my 2013 3.5 turbo. It was not showing codes. And after 2 trips to dealer, they replaced the T B. No prob since then.
Shit my 2013 ford f150 dropped from 6th to 1st gear going 75 mph down the highway , back tires locked up and truck jumped over two lanes thank God there was nobody next to me or I would have slammed in to there for sure. These trucks are death traps. Burn yours to the ground before it take your life. Trust me.
Don't tweak these high tech new engines. Every problem I hear about is a motor that has been "tuned" or modified in some way. These are too complex to be tinkering with. The old engines that you could fix with a pair of pliers and some baling wire were simple to tweak. These new engines, not so much!!
Oh my word the on and on crying. Limp mode is a very common thing in newer vehicles of all types, even motorcycles. You complain that the dealership will keep the truck for a month and not fix it but then go on to say you are going through a process of elimination. Yeah cause you have no damn clue what you are doing. If you did it would be called diagnostics. You obviously don’t even know that limp mode is the vehicles way of saving itself. If there is a problem detected it goes into limp mode so that it doesn’t cause further issues that could be more detrimental to the vehicle. Basically containing the problem and not making it worse. Likely this was brought on by all the so called upgrades you have done because everyone these days think trucks are race cars for suburban pretty boys than can easily get by with a minivan.
