I just want to say, This speaker is AMAZING! I'm researching 2017 H Tuscons to buy as a pre-owned compact SUV (it's Dec. 2023) and this video offers me a very rich "baseline" education. Seriously, it was very pleasant to watch this, even the setting in the woods makes it better than the videos that film in parking lots. Thank you! (Tennessee)
I bought a used 2016 Tucson last December and just wanted to look and see what you said about the model. When I tell you that you taught me numerous things about my own car...
maaaan now that's a car review!!!! love your reviews man!!!! very in-depth and comprehensive!!! I've been cross shopping SUVs and your reviews have been very helpful!!! keep it up!!!
even with its spacious size inside, parking is a breeze everywhere.Dont listen to the idiots complaining about dual clutch who dont know how to drive this car and dont have an scheduled maintenance.
Another excellent review Alex! Purchased my limited with ultimate package last month over the cx-5 and absolutely no regrets love everything about this vehicle.
Hyundai & Kia are offering values that Toyota was giving back in the late 70s/early 80s. Not saying there isn't value in Toyotas but it seems the 'Koreans' have stepped up their game. As Toyota was chasing after GM, Ford & Chrysler 30+ years ago, it appears to me Kia & Hyundai are taking away clients who might other wise buy a Toyota (Nissan or Mazda). It's good to have options and I can't recall in the past 30 years when more favorable options have been available for the consumer.
+Tully3674 It's actually unbelievable how they were able to step up their game. Just 10 years ago Kia and Hyundai went from "who the hell would buy it?" to "damn, that might be my next car" now days.
especially after having their economy depleted from the 1997 asian financial crisis, and the Korean War. at this rate, i believe in another few years, Hyundai and Kia will be among the top car brands.
I'm very complicated...Hyundai and Kia...I don't know. They doesn't give Korean valuable services such as long period of warranty. They are selling reliable cars in the world and it makes me happy because I'm Korean. However, they disregard people who made them. Korean people bought a lot of cars from them when they are developing in other countries. When People in the would were blaming them, Korean got cars from them because they are the only survived Korean brand. We made them wealthy and 5th top contender of the would but...now...I feel shame...I hope they don't discriminate Korean.
Hey just stopping back to remark that this video clinched my decision to go with a 2017 Tucson Sport! I absolutely agree with the grade you gave the car in all 6 categories and have zero regrets, so thank you, Alex.
Alex I'm really looking forward to every episode. As a matter of fact I'm obsessively checking when a new one will be out. All my friends know about you and I just love the style and format of the while thing. I'm commenting for the first time. I'm really looking forward seeing the New Civic, Tesla P90D and the X, New Prius, Rav4 Hybrid, New Lexus LS, if you can get your hands on the NSX
I have a few other channels I watch that review mid-tier trims but I agree that the highest one should be reviewed. Plus Alex has done lowest trims of cars before (I believe the 2014 Corolla was the last one I watched that I can remember.)
checked out all of the competition....the Tucson is IMO the best over all.........I really like it and its good looking. AND THAT WARRENTYYYYYYY !!!! no one comes close
Just one note on the black interiors on the Tucson. Hyundai needs to step it up with some accent stitching, piping or bright trim on door panels & around door handle releases & console . The "stark" black interior look went out in the 80's. Considering the competition, including most other models from Hyundai, you'll will see what I'm talk'in about. This fault gets the most demerits on Limited models, as for paying thousands $$$ more, the overall interior appearance is about same as in the lower line.
The Rav4 Hybrid XLE is the best value in this class, at under $29k, but this is very appealing with great style and power, and good real-world fuel economy. Very well done redesign.
+Alex Thank you for a good review. The CX-5 AWD gets 30/24/26 compared with the non-Eco Tucson 28/24/26. So, the CX-5 is in-fact slightly better on the highway. The Eco Tucson does get 31/25/27, so +1 MPG better in city & highway as well as average.
Alex I appreciate your thoroughness in all of your reviews. If at all possible please add a brief look at the gauges etc in the dark. I do most of my driving at night and would find it extremely helpful. I haven't seen any reviewer that does this.
Alex, I appreciate your candor in evaluating this against the CX5, one of my favorites in this segment. I like everything about the new Tuscon; if they only offered adaptive cruise control (which ironically is now available on the Elantra), I'd probably go out and buy one right now. This vehicle ticks off about everything major item on my wish list otherwise.
+Kottarathel Sujeer its terrible and unsafe....it will accelerate on its own from a dead stop...making it impossible to inch it forward with control....
Excellent styling and wheels. Looks sportier and more interesting than class leaders like the Rav4 and CRV. A Rav4 Hybrid will be more powerful and more efficient, but more expensive. BTW, that is the smartest power tailgate I've heard of. Just stand in front of the tailgate with the key on you, and it will beep until opening. That's how it should be done!
Excellent Reviews Alex! Could you please do a review on 2019 Tucson as they have done a mid cycle refresh with different interiors and changed engine options. Would love to get your opinion on that car before I consider buying it. Thanks!
I just love how Alex does the reviews, he gives a lot of info and comparison and understands that there is no perfect car. In my personal opinion I test drove all compact crossovers this year at a auto show and sat on mid and top trim levels. My favorite was the cx5. if you want basic trim the mazda it's the best, it offers the 2.5 liter plus push start ignition and for 400 bucks you get a big touch screen. with Tucson you need to step it up to the sport. Also the tucson has way too much hard plastic from all the way from sport to bottom trim. even in the Limited had some more than the others. My second choice it's tie with limited tucson or rogue. the rogue has a very nice interior. The tucson gauges look way to simple, nothing special, it looks cheap. The exterior it's the best, period, but to me the interior it's the most important after engine and performance since it's where you spend all of the time. Hyundai warranties it's hard to beat specially for me since I want to keep it for 10 years.
I bought one after listening to this. This car is so powerful and fast. Dont know why yet it's got a small engine 1.5. I pass all other vieckels like they are standing.
very informative, even with excessive talking about tires ( which can be changed to many different compositions, for mileage vs grip)--- more explanation about warranty value is needed though since that is a major advertising point of every Hyundai advertisement. Pleasant video to watch, well paced, useful.
The many Hyundais and Kias we have in our company are simply on a higher level when compared to other maker's similar priced offerings. If this hasn't dawned on you yet, you must be slow.
Thanks for another great video. We test drove a fully loaded 2017 model and the interior felt very inexpensive compared to the competition. On road the Tuscan felt jittery compared to the competition as well. After careful consideration we replaced our fully loaded 2011 Sonata Limited Turbo with an Equinox.
Sat in them all. CX5 front seats are too aggressive for me - feels like they are designed for one specific person's body, rear seat does NOT recline and is uncomfortably vertical. Escape front seats very comfortable, back seat bottom cushion too tiny and low. CRV seats leave me cold... nothing special. rear seat reclines, but not enough to make any difference. RAV4 front seats too mushy with not much shape... rear seat bottom cushion feels like a cardboard box. Can't get a power driver's seat unless you get the most expensive model. Toyota's idea of a telescoping steering wheel is a joke. The travel is like 1 inch and is still too far away. Now matter how high you make the driver's seat in the RAV4, you still see too much of the hood. Rogue is ok but again leaves me cold... front passenger seat is canted forward too much for my taste... makes me feel like I am sliding off... I hate that. When I sat in the back seat I hit my head on the roof by the door when I tilt my head. Pass. Tucson front seats very comfortable. firm with just the right support in the right places. Driver's seat power in most trim. You get a power passenger seat WITH height adjustment in the limited. Rear seat is most comfortable than all the competition. Very interested in the Tucson. Blows away the rest in terms of comfort.
Wonderful review as always Alex! It seems like the best time to purchase the new Tucson will be after the Santa Fe Sport is refreshed and Hyundai can equip the vehicle the way you know they would like to. I test drove the Eco model and actually thought it would be a great base trim, and the fully loaded Limited model still seemed like it was begging for more content. Seems like Hyundai may go the same route as Jeep with a Patriot/Compass and Cherokee surrounding the Compact CUV market rather than hitting it directly. Oh, sorry to say there's a typo in the economy graphic under the AWD equipped 2.0L's city numbers. I'd like the stalk status display if the vehicle were a rental, not so much once I've learned a vehicle's quirks though.
Alex . . . went to look at a 2017 Tucson. They showed me that towing capacity is 1,000 pounds without trailer brakes and 1,500 with trailer brakes, regardless of engine.
Although Lane Departure Warning and Blind Spot Detection were mentioned, there was no mention that Rear Cross Traffic Alert is standard on the Sport and Limited models. This is an important safety feature and I won't buy a vehicle that doesn't have it, along with Blind Spot Detection and Lane Departure Warning. The two things Hyundai really needs to add, at least to the Limited, are Adaptive Cruise Control and a heated steering wheel. Add that and the Tucson Limited has it all. Except for Surround View. Surround View is really neat.
+AlaskaErik it's a late available feature. I have a 16, it's shown as a feature in the owners manual. Reaching out to Hyundai it's coming soon; as cars did launch without the lighted front door handles.
Sorry if I'm bursting anyone's bubble there, but the 2016 Tucson with 1.6t and 7sp actually has a ridiculously tall 1st gear, not short as it's claimed in the video. The official specification is for only 1:3.929 ratio. In case of AWD, the final drive is 3.579, yielding only 10.132 total ratio. This is significantly less than typical 1:13 to 1:15 found in most cars and CUVs (except those with ZF's 9sp and its clones). You'll have to search for a different explanation for the acceleration.
+Pete Zaitcev In FWD trim as we were testing first gear is effectively 19:1 while in the AWD model it is taller at 14:1. The Ecoboost 2.0L engine gets a 14:1 overall first gear ratio with either engine. I should have been specific in that we were testing the FWD model at that moment although I did say this was the FWD model earlier in the video.
Could you please do a video explaining the different types of car lights? To me it all sounds like a foreign language. I am curious about the different pros and cons and pricing and trends in the automotive industry lately. Everyone seems to keep making a big deal about lights in car reviews and I am ignorant.
195 lb ft fo torque available at just 1500 rpm will feel like a normally aspirated 250+ where you have to get to 4500 rpm to get the full amount. In day to day use it will feel just as quick. 0-60 times come from flooring it and getting the resulting harsh shifts and noise that result.
Alex; long time viewer. The details into which you delve is really amazing. Couple big picture off the wall observations. 3 exporters of "most improved over the years" cars we see in the showroom seem to be built by former wartime enemies. Does these bode well for Vietnam and Iraqi imports in the future? I confess to owning both a German and Japanese car. Somehow I doubt kim il ? will get there though much less the others. 2nd question. Any chance you'll "test" a 991.2 in the near future? Manufactures in general never slow for a moment it seems though I hold little hope for autonomous vehicles in our future. I'm wrong as often as not though... Thanks
Mines the diesel JCTiggs. Hi level spec, all the toys, and fifty miles per Gallon around town high sixties on the motorway. Don't know about the 1.6L but the diesel is super smooth.
The base 2.0 model that I rented out last month reminded me to ask you to incorporate a head toss index for testing taller vehicles. I would say the excessive head toss over uneven pavement and the plasticky interior are the only negatives I found with that particular model.
Very nice expertly produced and delivered video, A lot of info here, and explains any anomalies drivers may run into. Thank you I subscribed to this channel, Alex delivers reviews I don't mind listening to.
Thanks Alex for such an informative and inclusive review! You’re the best! Having mentioned there are better grippier tires out there in the market, could you please advise on certain brands to go for?!.. Thanx a gain and much appreciated!.. 👍🏻
Alex - I'm a long time viewer and am so appreciative of the level of detail you provide in your reviews. I read a blurb about the 2016 Tucson and came to your video. To be honest, my decision had been narrowed down to the CX5 and the Forester. You do not spend as much time discussing the Forester's place in this class. What are your thoughts between these 3? Lastly, can you comment on visibility from the cabin of the Tucson? That's a huge point of contention for me, which is why the Forester remains high on my list--I can actually SEE out of it.
+Jim Pryde Visibility is a strong point on the Forester. I generally only talk about the major sellers in a category because doing otherwise would make the videos too long. The Forester is usually 8th or 9th on the sales charts so I generally don't cover it unless there's a strong reason. The Forester's main selling point is price, it's inexpensive for a vehicle with standard AWD. My only complaints are that the low starting price meant Subaru had less to spend on the interior.
+Alex on Autos That's a good point, Alex. Compared to the interior of my 2007 Fusion, though... It's stellar! As for visibility in the Tucson, where does it rank? Thanks again!
+Jim Pryde cant see shit out of the rear view....backup cam comes standard on all models.....dual clutch at dead stops is like driving with a first time manual driver....sucks to park....otherwise its nice.....
Yong Kim Hi, I'm thinking of getting the eco. Do you experience any issues with the transmission? How much did you get yours if you don't mind me asking. Thanks!
Hi Adrian, transmission is fine to me. If you don't get used to dct (like manual sometimes), you wouldn't be happy. I've experienced a few noisy issues though. For price, I would recommend you to do some online research and buy one toward the end of the month.
This 1.6 T, Tiguan 2 1.4 T, Kadjar 1.2 T, Kuga 1.5 Ecoboost or Ateca 1.4?? what would you get? New 3008 will be released after 4/5 months here in my country so won't wait for it.
I love the all new Kia Sportage GT line. Most people who see it in the showroom love it. On videos it looks completely different. Also the newer model drives much better than the outgoing model.
Alex, you got some of the best auto reviews. I know you mention how much you like Mazda CX-5 handling in many SUVs in this size range. What about Tiguan? You mentioned you rate it high but that was in 2014/2015. What about now? I checked all SUVs below 30K and I felt Tiguan has the best interior quality but the style is not exciting. Second for me is Subaru Outback and CX-5. Hope you do a quick review on 2016 Tiguan as it now has Android auto and the models are greatly discounted by dealers.
i JUST GOT A 2017 LIMITED TUSCON..and love it so far 41860 miles on it on march 11 24...I hope it lasts a long time...am just at 70 ty...so its my last ride.....
Indeed, interior is disappointing. Almost all hard plastics and steering wheel looks outdated in my opinion. Exterior is beautiful. Graceful lines make it look luxurious. Front and rear design makes car look bigger without any disproportions to the vehicle. I think this vehicle's design will not look outdated for many years to come.
Great review, thanks Alex. Im in the market in this segment and have been impressed with the Tuscon, which I just learned about after test driving the CX-5 (which I liked). Your review dinged the cabin noise which surprised me because almost every other review raved about the cabin noise being exceptionally low. Thoughts? Also - how do you compare warranties? If purchasing a new car is this something you would consider in your decision? Do you think the reduced clearance of the Tuscon compared to the CX-5 would make a big difference in soft-roading? And lastly, Tuscon is SUPPOSED to support Carplay although there appears to be some delay in this. This would definitely be a part of my decision, do you know anything about this?
+Jaimie Harrow In our tester cabin noise was above our average in the segment, I'm not sure why it was not for others. On teh CarPlay front I know that Hyundai has committed to supporting it and it is my understanding that it should be available either now or by April. There was some speculation that they were waiting for iOS 9.3 which was just released.
+Alex on Autos I own a 2016 Hyundai Tucson limited, awd, and ultimate package and it didn't come with Apple car play. I just learned that it is now available with a download to the sd card from your computer and you can install it yourself or the dealership will install it for a fee from what I understand. I will try and instal it when I get back home.
Alex, a wonderful review as always but why can't you compare the Fiat 500X with this vehicle since it's a much better value when you get a much better interior, complete navigation system and a more comprehensive safety system.
Your reviews are very helpful. I am very torn between this vehicle and the CX-5. Just not sure about Mazda's long term reliability as I heard the older suvs were not reliable. But I need to test drive one soon because every reviewer raves about the pleasure of driving the CX-5. But I do like the Hyundai's long warranty. What do you suggest? Thanks
+Nana Kwame it has alot of strange quarks....do a full test drive especially if your looking at the dual clutch....parallel park it in a pretty tight spot....that alone might change your mind about this Tuscon.....
Great review as always Mr Alex, and yes it got me confuse between this and CX-5, but i couldn't more agree with you, i'd choose the 2016 GT model CX-5!
+Didi Atthas Good choice, I have the 2015 CX-5 GT 2.5L (AWD) and just took it in for it's 1 yr scheduled service. Absolutely no problems at all, it has good acceleration, the AWD system sends power to the rear extremely fast when needed as I tested it a few times in snow storms up in Canada and best of all it is great on gas. I am getting slightly better mpg than the rated if I take it easy.
Alex, I love your reviews! Is it possible to get an exhaust note 'sample' during each review to hear what it sounds like? A big turn off for me of 4 cylinders is the sound they make.
no comments on the squeaks and rattles ? hyundai and kia have come a long way over the last several years - but make no mistake they still don't build them as solid as a toyota or honda which consistently feel and sound substantially more solid ...
Neezy Ko I thought he meant the 2016 Sportage. The 2017 one has some extremely ugly front face, I don't think I can ever bear to drive a car that looks like that.
The noted steering feel is a shame. Hoping the 2017 Kia Sportage Sport, with what looks like many of the Kia Optima parts being integrated, will turn out a better overall feel. The looks will be something that is either love-it-or-hate-it though. I think this is a nice step up from the previous generation.
+stephane matis Most new steering will feel the same, all of them are electric instead of hydraulic. Even some sports car are getting numb steering now days
Well, the first Acura NSX had electric steering setup and it was called divine. My BRZ has electric steering and it's pretty amazing. So it is a matter of tuning and design. Even BMW has gone back to re-tune things to make it better after the negative comments. That said, CUVs and SUVs may be a nasty challenge due to suspension angles and weight.
For 2018 they are shuffling options around and adding new colors. So soon you wont have to buy the top trim for the options that were Limited only features on the 2016-2017.
