2016 / 2017 Infiniti QX60 First Drive Review

For 2016 Infiniti refreshed the QX60 with a more luxurious interior, a new front end and a re-tuned suspension. Although it's not as sporty as the X5 it's refreshing to see a family friendly luxury crossover with a great highway ride.

Just leased one of these and we're really loving it. This suv is very luxurious, super quiet, fast and smooth. Only thing missing is Apple Carplay.

bought 2015 qx60 for my wife last year, love the car, love the CVT transmission, we don't want sport SUV, we just want a smooth ride with my kids, lots of room inside, everything about this car has been will thought, you have to own it for while to notice every little details

thankfully a realistic comment that's not made by teenagers bitching about the CVT not being 'sporty', as if the target demographic give a damn.

80386 People hating on CVTs is not about them not being sporty, it's about the annoying droning they do.

It’s 2021 now. How’s your QX60 holding up, after 6 years of ownership? (If you still have it, of course) I rented a 2020 version for a trip 6 months ago, and I really loved it, including the CVT transmission. It was very well sorted out and the ECO mode worked great on the freeway.

That was a very nice review, Alex. Thank you. I own a 2013 JX35 which, as you know, is now the QX60. I have driven the 2015, 2016, and 2017 QX60 models as my free loaner car from the dealership when I'm having routine servicing done. What I noticed is that the 2015 and 2016 really don't feel or look much different than my JX35. However, the 2017 does drive MUCH differently and I couldn't figure out why. But now I understand the changes-----would you believe that the salesman could not tell me what is new on the 2017 QX60 versus my JX35? I was thinking about trading mine in and buying a 2017 off the lot right there on the spot, because I love my car and the 2017 drove even nicer. But he did not know his products well at all, so I went home. He has no idea that I was about to buy a new car from him-----I guess he didn't take me seriously for whatever reason (really not a good thing to do if you're a salesman, especially a car salesman). I'm actually happy that I kept my JX because the new car payment was going to be a lot, and mine is paid for so I'm happier leaving things as-is. There is one very important aspect to my JX (and the QX) that I NEVER see addressed or talked about in every review I've checked out online (both video reviews and written reviews). Like most people, I shopped around for a long time before I settled on the JX. The huge advantage the JX has over almost everything out there are the hi-tech safety features it has. But I never see anyone really going into detail about the safety options that this car has. When I bought my JX in 2013, it was one of the only vehicles sold in the USA that had the very impressive safety systems that really blew me away. I'm going to list them now so that people know what is available: -Lane departure warning (most cars have this now) -Lane departure PREVENTION (the car will beep to warn you, and if you don't take corrective action quickly, it will take over the steering and put you back in your lane. It does this by a camera system that "reads" the road and then the computer can independently apply the brakes to one or more wheels to pull you back in. For example, if you are drifting left, the right front tire brakes and steers you back in before you can cross that line. -Backup collision warning (lots of cars have this now) -Backup collision INTERVENTION (my car will apply the brakes if it sees a person, car, bicycle, or whatever that you're about to crash into. I can't tell you how many times this thing has saved me. It's usually when I'm backing out of a parking stall in a really busy parking lot. If I try to back out but I can't see what's coming because a large truck or SUV is parked next to me, all I do is look at my backup camera. It has a wide view lens that allows me to see what's there and if I don't take action, the car WILL immediately stop the car's movement. I am so glad I have this!!!! -Surround-view camera. This one you have to see to believe. It's really awesome!!!! There are FOUR cameras on the car. One is on the front grill, the rear one is mounted above the license plate, and the two side cameras are built into the side-view mirrors on the bottom. With these 4 views, a computer program is able to combine them into an image that is just like a bird's eye view of your car. Just imagine having a camera that is about 10 feet above the roof of your car and it's pointing downward. That is the view you have on the very large GPS screen (multi-function screen). It is incredibly helpful and I use it all the time now. I don't look out the windows when I'm parking because I do not have a good view of things. It's a typical SUV with lots of blind spots, but this very clever surround-view camera is awesome! I'm out of time but I didn't even cover the rest of it. The car has sonar and radar to perform a whole menu of neat safety tricks. When I'm on the freeway in commute traffic where it's just stop-and-go, stop-and-go, stop-and-go, stop-and-go over and over again (anyone who commutes in California knows exactly what I'm talking about), it is VERY easy for me! All I do is hit the gas pedal when traffic goes, and then do nothing when the traffic stops. Why do I do nothing? Simple----because the care applies the brakes on its on own. It took some getting used to, but now I love it. I never have to press the brake pedal in commute traffic---very cool. I ran out of time so I have to go, but I hope I gave folks a good idea of how awesome this car is. If you're considering one, I highly recommend that you opt for the Tech Package, Driver Package, and the package that gives you the larger Navigation screen and larger rear movie screens (I think it's called the Theater Package). You won't be sorry----it is such a great car!!!!

I was so set on getting the 2015 QX60 until I saw the 2016 model. Much much better looking front end design. Now the dilemma is do I buy the 2015 at a great price or get the 2016 at about 3K more. Thanks Alex for mudding things up for me. Your reviews have great influence on my choice for the next family SUV. After watching all your reviews on semi-luxury SUV's and test driving couple of them, I decided on the Infiniti QX60. Just wanted to say thank you.

+Youssef ALAzmi I sat in both model years side by side and from the driver's seat, you can't tell the difference. The dealership I was dealing with offered me 9,000 off MSRP for the 2015 model and $2,500 off the 2016 model. I bought the 2015 model stickered for 52,900 for 43,900 with 1.9% APR. I think I got a pretty good deal. But if you want DRL's and turn signal indicators in the side mirrors, which 2015 do NOT have (appalling), you go for the 2016 model. I guess the question is do you like the update styling on the 2016 model so much that you're willing to spend extra $6,500 for it. Not to me.

Alex, yet another superb review. Any chance Nissan/Infiniti might get you the hybrid even for just a short update? By the by, I agree with you in regard to Nissan's CVTs. I find them just about as sorted out as any conventional automatic on the marekt; in fact if I'm not paying close attention, I notice little difference. Can't say the same for all CVTs, the ones Jeep was using the in the Compass & Patriot were absolutely horrible.

The ride in this is very soft and quiet. It's not zippy, but not as gutless as I've seen complaints about. I like the exterior being a mix of classy and bold. My biggest complaints are the old-school navigation screen and lack of modernization overall inside. This looks like a luxury 2010 interior, not a luxury 2016. Just look at the Volvo XC90, Lexus rx 350, Jaguar F Pace, or BMW X5. They have all upped their game in both the modern look, and the advanced features. All the 2017 Infiniti did was add some more horse power, and added apps to the infotainment system. I wanted this to be the SUV I chose, but I'd rather pay $5,000 more for the ultra-refined XC90.

Alex, How would you rate the reliability for CVT? I had QX60 as a loaner, I really did enjoy it. From someone who works at Nissan repair center, he said only thing holding back the brand is the high rate of CVT failures. They just end up replacing the whole transmission as it is not easy to repair.

Alex, keep up these reviews, I watch nearly every one! I was wondering if you have any information or observations on the already sagging rear suspension or "marshmallow butt: as I call it present here, just like the Pathfinder? The rear end sags down and causes the rear wheels to camber in at the top with NO weight in the back. If you put weight in the back, God help you. This problem is endemic to Nissan. Look at the wheel on the left at 1:08. You can see how cambered in it is with no one inside. Nearly every single Versa, Sentra, Altima, Maxima, Pathfinder, and QX60 I see that is more than a year old has major sagging issues in the rear. The suspension is nearly bottomed out. Now, I understand if you put alot of weight into the rear of a car it will lower the suspension, but I do not see this issue with really any other automaker's cars unless you put a considerable amount of weight in the rear, like 2 250+ Lbs people plus luggage for 4 in a Civic. For instance, my 2009 Honda Accord had 4 people in it plus luggage, and while the suspension lowered a little, it was still far from bottoming out. Evidence: Edmunds noticed it too: www.edmunds.com/kia/k900/2015/long-term-road-test/2015-kia-k900-riding-low-to-oregon.html Other vehicles I have noticed it on include: Pre-2013 Toyota Avalons. 2015+ Hyundai Sonata 2014+ Kia Cadenza 2015+ Kia K900 If you get a chance to talk to a Nissan engineer about this, could you ask? The best explanation I've heard is poor rear suspension design. In order to make the ride more comfortable, Nissan and the other cars I mentioned add soft springs to stiffer shocks to give good handling but a smooth ride, but this is the cheap way out, instead of properly designing a proper suspension to do both like Honda, Toyota, BMW, etc...
@FabienTeulieres93
@FabienTeulieres93 2 года назад
Yes I’ve noticed that too. However I think it’s more of an optical illusion than an actual suspension sagging issue. The common aesthetic issue that all the cars you listed above have is they have too small a wheel size for the volume of the body they support. By too small I mean in diameter and in width. Also, the stock wheel offsets are very high on these cars and make the rear wheel literally disappear in the rear wheel wells. It’s particularly bad on the stock Pathfinder/JX35/QX60 with the tiny 18 inch wheels: they make the car look too top-heavy. The 2005-2012 Avalon is pretty awful in that regard too with its bulbous body. None of these cars suffer from this issue anymore when sporting larger, wider wheels with more aggressive offsets (I’ve seen the difference in person on a friend’s JX35, it’s really striking and completely changed the car’s aesthetic for the best)
@Mercer1012
@Mercer1012 2 года назад
@@FabienTeulieres93 No, I've actually measured some of these and it is indeed sagging in the rear. I spoke to an engineer about this and his thoughts were that it was a way for Nissan and others to cheap out and get a compliant suspension that also handled well, by softening the springs and stiffening the shocks you get, in a cheap way, a fair balance. However, the trade-off is that the springs are weaker when they are softer, so the body sags on them more.
@FabienTeulieres93
@FabienTeulieres93 2 года назад
@@Mercer1012 Wow! That’s good information, you definitely did some research on that. Since you actually went through the trouble of measuring and interviewing a specialist, I totally believe you. It seems like Nissan and Toyota are the worst offenders on that suspension shortcut! I’ve never seen that issue on any Mazda, Honda or Acura personally, so more power to them.
@Mercer1012
@Mercer1012 2 года назад
@@FabienTeulieres93 thanks. The cars I have noticed it on include: 2005-gen Nissan Maxima 2012-gen Nissan Maxima 2014-gen Nissan Pathfinder 2011-gen Nissan Altima 2003-gen Infiniti G35 2010-gen Toyota Avalon 2016-gen Kia Optima (non-sport suspension only) 2016-gen Hyundai Sonata (non-sport suspension only) 2016-gen Kia Sedona 2015-gen Kia K900 You will note no American or German cars, this is because they actually spend the money to design a proper suspension. American cars in particular have very comfortable suspensions and GM's magnetorheological suspensions are actually licensed for use by Ferrari and are the best in the business IMO.

Amir What about the Dodge Caliber and Jeep Compass' CVTs? Those are the worst transmissions ever. And they're made by the same company who made the CVT in this vehicle. The company is Jatco BTW. Also, I didn't say anything about this vehicle being a sports car.

I thought so too but I was very impressed by the CVT on the 2020 QX60 I rented a few months ago. It was very refined, quiet and responsive. High class, frankly. A world’s apart from the whiny, sluggish CVT’s I’ve experienced in many other cars. Jatco can build them right if they want to, it seems, in spite of their uneven reputation.

What the heck? I just got over from "Motomouth Canada" who's doing the exact review today. He showed the second row seat and it was too low and you barely or cant put your feet under the front seat. Your footage, Alex, has this cut off by awkward camera angle which hides your feet on the second row! Also, it is striking that you skipped to rate the second row. Instead you rated the third row. I think that is suspicious.
@AAutoBuyersGuide

+A Freethinker That somehow got left on the cutting room floor. The QX60 has more than 9 inches more combined legroom than an MDX. Even if you can't put your foot completely under the first row there is so much more room between the rows you still have more room in the QX.

I just bought my QX60 Saturday. My wife picked up her grandmother so she could see our new car and in doing so, I sat in the seat directly behind my wife (in the second row). Now my wife is on the short (she says average) side at about 5'5" while I stand 6'2" and I can honestly say that there was a ton of leg room and a ton of head room. Before we purchased the vehicle, I sat in the third row and pulled the second row back. The second row wasn't all of the way back, so if there was someone in that seat, they may not have had a ton of leg room, but in that position, I had more than enough leg room (enough for the second row to be moved back some) and the head room was surprisingly good! I hope this helps!

its not a sports car. And cvts are not that slow on bigger engines
@moviesmetalmusicmotorvehic4828
Amir I never said it was a sports car. I said that using CVTs in luxury vehicles is sacrilege because they really only truly work in hybrids, ATVs, Go-karts, motorcycles, etc but not regular cars. Also, another reason is 8-speed auto, so why use a CVT when you can use an 8-speed transmission which basically has the same benefits of a CVT while leaving behind the drawbacks, such as the droning.

CVT is a lot smoother than an 8-speed auto.

This should have the 3.7 engine
@pillrollerdeluxe
@pillrollerdeluxe 8 лет назад
The 3.5L engine is very popular, but Infinity is only squeezing out 265 HP. Other vehicles with the 3.5L manage to get 300h HP or more and probably less gas mileage to go with the increased power.

depends. this will be faster especially 2017. bigger for people and stuff also. this uses premium fuel though

+ctk4949. The price points between the two generally keep them from being compared to each other.

+occckid123. Premium fuel is recommended. Being an avid Nissan (Infiniti) fan, I can tell you that regular fuel is fine if you're cruising unloaded. You won't trip a knock sensor. I didn't put premium in my 350z, my QX56 and I don't put it into my QX60.

OK Fully loaded CX-9 or Base QX60??
@occckid123
@occckid123 8 лет назад
+ctk4949 I'm assuming you'll be using the the 3rd row since you're getting a 3 row vehicle? the qx60 has more room in it and will be quicker for merging onto the highway and sound better because it's a v6. if you want the options then get the pathfinder platinum but if you like the interior that much more in the cx9 then got for that if you don't need the room

265hp is very Weak for a 7 passenger family hauler, they should have given it at least 300hp.

@xandereaston4885
@xandereaston4885 8 лет назад
That is because the qx60, and its sister car, the Nissan pathfinder, got direct injection for the 2017 model year, as well as some other changes. This is because the new engine in both received direct injection, replacing the multi point injection systems in the old models

Infinite needs to ditch the melted plastic look that their recent designs have. This isn't even the worst offender. Their newer models are even worse.
