The 2016 BMW R1200GS is a refinement of everything BMW Motorrad has learnt over the years with many of the latest electronic innovations fitted to this adventure style motorcycle.
In this video, and yes it's a little longer than many of the others at around 11 minutes, we give our opinion of the bike after riding it over some 2,000 kilometres in both off road and bitumen conditions.
There are definitely faster adventure bikes, but there are few around with the level of sales success of the GS ... and for good reason. This is one fantastic package.

Great review, I've had one for 18 months and love it. Reference the difficulty seeing the speedo etc, I always use the Garmin in the 4 mode showing speed, ext temp, range and engine temp......real easy to see.

The 'modes' change when you engage the clutch. The idea is that you set the mode as you see conditions change up ahead, you are running down a paved road, for example, and you see a dirt road coming up, or on the navigator screen or you know the area. You press the mode button a few times to the mode you need. In the mean time you stay in the mode you were in, because you haven't changed your driving needs yet. As soon as you engage the clutch it changes into the new mode instantly. The modes really just vary the safety equipment, like ABS and throttle control so you have more chance of staying upright. Turning the modes to 'Enduro Pro', for example, pretty much shuts off all the safety defaults so you can ride like a Real Man, as we all did back it the '70s when we were kids. No techno safety net, just guts and knowhow and learning the hard way with many injuries that were all part of the deal of riding in the woods and rocks, no helmet or fancy boots, just a stripped down bike and shorts, and it was worth it!. Those were the days, before everything had to 'protect you from hurting yourself', because you have no clue how to ride a motorcycle. Anyway, I am 55 years old and still push the bike pretty hard and this bike gets the job done and then some. If you go off road, I suggest you understand that this beast is heavy, and it carves a rut in the soft ground that can bring you down if you're not in good shape and are too timid. Intuition tells you to slow down because you can feel the weight and your mind does the 'math'. But in most cases, assuming you have the proper tires, you're better off using the torque this thing has, lifting the front up a bit and riding through the rough. But again, you better be in pretty good shape and have confidence in holding the line or you may get a rude awakening. Then you have to pick this thing up, and when it's muddy and on a steep incline, you're going to have to earn it. This is a great bike, but it's a heavy bike, and that weight as it's advantages, on the highway, and it disadvantages, in soft ground and when you drop it. But It is a Man's Machine. Go hard, or go home. P.S. The shift assist both up and down is beautiful!

Great video. The only thing I would say is the gear assist is not meant to be used at low revs. Hence that chunky feeling. In any case I use the clutch out of 1st of course and after 2nd gear assist works great. The bike feels so light and nimble for its size.
@TheBikeStig

+Leslie Sofarelli (advgrrl) Yep, agree with you on the shift assist. Anyone who has ever ridden the S1000RR and felt the shift assist on that bike will notice a big difference hence my comments.

Great Video, I've got they 1200gsa lc and love it, I did the BMW safari over 7 days covering 2500 klm's 1700 off road and from a comfort and handling point of view I wouldn't have used any other bike. With regards to the lights, the spot lights are for day riding and it is illegal to have the high beam and spots coming in at the same time, if you rewire it to come on all at the same time it can fail the road worthy....
@TheBikeStig
@TheBikeStig 8 лет назад
+Black Hawk Thanks mate, yeah it's a pretty well refine machine for sure. I have to check on those lights as my understanding is the spots should go off when you switch to low beam. I'll check.

Great review, appreciate the issue with the speedo needle but you overlooked the fact that the sat nav can be set up to show the speedo in huge digital numbers if you want. The technical data screen can be adjusted so the items you want appear at the top left and you just scroll the wheel in to zoom, I use this on my GS with four items displayed. It means key info like speed and range are displayed right in your eye line without having to take your eyes off the road.

Great review. I have been tossing up between the GS and the Triumph explorer. But this has sold me on the GS. Now I just need to pick a colour. The Triple Black is such a gorgeous looking bike but I'm worried about the black showing up scratches. Also can I ask where did you get the bracket with the controller on that sits between the bars? Anyway Thanks again. Keep up the good work.
@TheBikeStig
@TheBikeStig 8 лет назад
+Rob Jackson The triple black is much harder to keep clean for sure, that bracket is one we made ourselves to mount the GoPro remote and additional cameras, super easy to make and mount.

I have a GS with the clutchless shift and you are spot on with your comments. BTW I have ridden all types of boxers for 20 years and the clunky shift from 1st to 2nd has always been there - you would think that they could smooth it out by now.
@TheBikeStig
@TheBikeStig 8 лет назад
+vasudama I have a sense this is related to the gear ratios and torque of the motor. The S1000RR is as smooth as butter on changes in any gear but the gears are closer together and the engine has way less torque. That's my take on the clunkiness anyway. If I find out exactly why I'll let everyone know.

Another great review Stig- thanks for sharing. Really enjoy these being pitched at a good level. One of the better personal biking channels. For the more spirited ride can you share what tyres & pressures for solo road riding are you using? Sitting in the UK with a lot of wet weather, cool conditions and poor back roads (great hunting ground) I'm a big fan of the PR4's. I think BMW's usually like standard 36/42, but I'm interested what you can use in warmer conditions for making progress. I think the roads looked pretty good that you were riding on. Cheers and keep the videos coming :-) As a side bar, I've had my GS from new nearly 3 years and the early 2013 LC versions were a little rough. The latest ones seem to have rounded of those edges - gearbox, steering dampener, etc. Yesterday I had the bike remapped and wow, what a difference. Early days, but first impressions are good. Far smoother and longer length in the gears (was a bit rough before). I haven't tried the 2016 model and if you have that out of the crate you have one sweet bike. The remap is contentious on the forums, but if you're interested I can share the dyno chart. For me it felt a very worthwhile investment for my bike.

+MrEunuch Thanks for the comments mate. Had quite a few questions about set up and pressures so I'm working on a video about this. The following is what I've been doing, it is definitely not a recommendation of any kind, just some info on my preferences. You need to make sure you do your own research if you're going to use any settings other than the manufacturer recommendations. Lol, yes thats my disclaimer :-) Re tyre pressures, there's an article here - thebikestig.com.au/category/track-days/ - that I wrote a little while back. If I'm doing range riding on the S1000RR, I drop pressures to about 2psi higher than what I run on the track, works well and obviously the ride is not as aggressive as on the track. Btw, I don't ride this bike as a commuter. On the GS, the same pressure setting rules apply (as per article) though there is potential for much greater tyre deformation on the front end under severe braking due to the increased bike weight. I've been running the Continental TKC70s with 36/38 psi front/back for normal solo riding. I ran 34psi front and rear for the range ride in the video. This setting will trigger a low pressure warning so the tyre pressure warning needs to be turned off on the GS. Re suspension, for a faster run I prefer it slightly stiffer so have found electronic preload setting to 'rider + luggage' and damping set to 'hard' on both GS and KTM 1190 Adventure to work well for a solo run. Hope that helps :-)
@MrEunuch
@MrEunuch 8 лет назад
+The Bike Stig Thank you for the comprehensive reply. The comments did help! I’ve not gone to the website before, but I’m going to make a point of following that too. Appreciate the caveat base suggestions on pressures too. I’m going to have a play around those to see what works for me. I know I need to experiment and I’ll take a look at setting it at solo + luggage - that’s a great suggestion. I have a 2K trip across SPain and Portugal coming up to plenty of opportunity to test it out on unfamiliar roads. Looking forward to seeing the setup and tyre pressure video too. Have fun!

+MrEunuch Just letting you know I've uploaded a video specifically about tyre pressures mate, its viewable on our channel and some of the technical buffs here in Australia have already used it to get the right information out about this issue.
@MrEunuch
@MrEunuch 8 лет назад
Thanks for letting me know. Actually I'd spotted it and watched it already. What I thought was interesting was referring to hot pressures needed and backtracking those to cold. Guess that makes sense since hot is what you are really interested in, I just never thought of it that way before. I'm still experimenting with different pressures on the GS including with luggage but not really had enough time to benchmark properly. I'll let you know how I get on.

@TheBikeStig
@TheBikeStig 8 лет назад
Got it Randall, thanks for the tip. It's interesting to see the digital display shows bike speed as determined by the bike, while the navigator shows speed calculated by GPS. The difference is around 8kmh at 100kmh, i.e. the bike speed shows 8 or so kph slower than the actual GPS speed. I've been through quite a few stationary and mobile radars using the GPS speed as the reference and there are not issues and I believe its the more accurate reference.
@grysnlvfr
@grysnlvfr 8 лет назад
The bikes speed display is pretty small too, would be nice if it was the size of the gear indicator font. I've lived without the nav 5 for a year now, do you think it's worth the $? I just use Google maps on the phone
@TheBikeStig
@TheBikeStig 8 лет назад
I agree with you completely Randall, I would have liked them to simply replicate what is on the S1000RR which is a fantastic dashboard. Gotta admit that I love the Nav 5, it's much better than any of the other Garmin brand bike GPS i've used previously. And it's connected to the bike's information as well. Love it.
@TheBikeStig
@TheBikeStig 8 лет назад
I've had a few Garmin GPS's and have to say I really do like this Nav 5, it's much better as a navigator than what I've used in the past. The upside is the Nav 5 is also connected to the bike's outputs such as tyre pressure, temperature etc. Anyone who's a gadget person will like it.

Great review mate have looked at a few and found yours to be spot on and to the point. Just bought a 2nd hand 2016 triple black. Wondering if it's worth the $1300 the local dealer is selling the navigator 6 for as would mainly just be using it for the digital speedo display

thanks for the comment mate, appreciate it. Seems like a lot of money, but I have to say I love the Navigator V on mine, good news about these is they can be used on other bikes and I even use mine in the car as the Garmin mount system is standard. Is it worth it? I would buy another one. One thing, the speedo and other digital read outs from the bike only work on the GS.

Great riding roads you have there in Oz,I enjoyed your three part video and educational commentary.I am Alien to this brand so please excuse my ignorance when I ask if GS means Gelande Strasse or on road off road I take it buying extra add ons help but ultimately if a desert or rough off roading is required is this still very capable?My dilemma arises when I discovered BMW also market the Adventure model as more appropriate yet the GS badge appears on many others so I am unsure of their marketing ,sorry if I am missing something I have no experience of the marque.

@TheBikeStig 7 лет назад
Thanks mate, I can offer you this - pre 1987, the G/S referred to Gelände/Straße (German for off-road/road). Around 1987 I believe it was changed to GS and the S was then meant to refer to ‘Sport’ instead of the original ’Straße’. They also made some suspension changes amongst other things to improve handling, e.g. switching from a rear end Monolever to a Paralever swingarm with torque arm that reduced the shaft drive effect earlier bikes experienced. Re off road capability, the GSA has longer suspension travel and bigger fuel tank than the standard GS, obviously comes with standard fittings not on the GS as well. The GSA is heavier as a result and a bit taller. Both bikes come with a 'plug in' chip that sets them up with Enduro and Enduro Pro riding modes that are there for off road riding. I've ridden quite a few adventure bikes and to be honest, my off road preference is for the KTM 1190 Adventure R, so if I was only riding on dirt I'd probably go the KTM way. If I could only own one bike, it would definitely be the GS which I've got. It is incredible, handles really well, has sufficient horsepower, and I am not a hardcore dirt rider anymore. Hope that helps mate.

Hi Bike Stig, thank you so much for responding. I am now so much better informed and a much wiser.I live in Arbroath ,Scotland home to the world famous" Smokie" a smoked fish. My local BMW dealer have a R 1200 GS year 2011, with low miles (10,000) for sale.I could be tempted, but to get the all singing and dancing later model is serious bucks even second hand,so I may have to live within my means and settle for a more basic model.I have heard through one forum that after 2013 BMW had addressed most of the technical problems that occurred on the R1200 GS so if that's the case I should look for one post 2013. After the BMW dealer two year warranty expires, I would hope to do my own maintenance where possible, so that is also attractive.No KTM dealer near me but thank you for your insight,your comments are invaluable.

If I could get one of these (2016 1200 triple black) for a good price and not a lot of mileage on it I wouldn't hesitate to buy it. I still have this one and it's a great machine. But I have a few buddies with the 1250 and it's a great bike too, they love it. Personally, I am going to wait until the 2nd round of the 1250 before I buy one given there was a big technology change in the engine wth the shift cam concept. I have been burnt in the past with 1st year of new technology when I bought a KTM and am not prepared to take the step too quickly. That said, it's still a financial decision at the end of the day.

you've probably already noticed but i'll mention it anyway if you activate the data screen on the Nav 5 and use the scroll wheel it will display speed as big as the screen ...that should save a few points on the licence ..I Have a 2016 triple black GS Hate the keyless ignition !! the most stupid idea ever on a motorbike why when i have 4 other locks on the bike that require use of the key (panniers and sat nav release) if i happen to have the key fall out of my pocket on a run i wont know until i turn it off and try to restart i cant open a pannier (bmw vario) with key in the lock ....its the thing most annoying me at the mo may have it ripped out for the regular key instead of a bloody great big car remote that just gets in the way ...Sometimes the phrase "if it aint broken dont fix it" should be listened to

I haven't ridden a 2021 model yet, am wondering how much different the quick shifter is on that .... I had heard gear shifts were smoother

@@TheBikeStig , dunno, too many kangaroos and nasty police here to ever think of a bike, mine was USA, PLUS SPEED LIMIT IS 100KM/H over that fines are steep, 150, they take your bike and crush it, think on it cross Australia @60mph

@@stuarthearn9890 they crush it, really! I get a lot of time on track as well as motocross so not so much of an issue for me, though I still do 10,000 ks on road. My advantage is I am closer to the rural areas so on road isn't so bad.

What?.. "feels quite lage?"what are you smoking, every reviewer for the past hundred years has remarked how "light" it feels, how the weight disappears once you get going. If you are that tone deaf right off the get go, how much stock can we put on every other nonsense you put out.?

You're a bit harsh in your response, but that's ok. I actually love the bike and my comment related to the initial jump on the bike sense that it's a big machine. I totally agree that it's a brilliant handling motorcycle and is way way lighter than one would expect. I still have this bike and have shown many sports bike riders how well this thing handles.

@@TheBikeStig Yes, I think you meant to say it looks large, which is does. I rode the GSA and it looks huge, but once it gets rolling it all disappears. Great bikes indeed.
