Looking great. Caddy is stepping up its game for sure. Spinning in 3rd gear is interesting if its power or it might be just wet & cold tires. Learned a few things so thanks for the review.
DoctaM3 it's a Cadillac. Just like a Porsche There's no need for those unneeded compliments haha. Owning These were literally like owning a Rolls Royce back in the days. So...
Awesome man. My dad got the sedan with the 6 speed back in November. He also got the PDR and got the Recaro seats and carbon fiber package. Looks gorgeous in vector blue with the black tints from the carbon fiber and red calipers.
funny I just got a notification on my phone and I figured it's probably another Engineering explained video.....lol I really do enjoy your videos thank you.
Very well done review! I think you do an extremely thorough review. And you seem to be very fair about what's actually a problem and what might just be your preference. I always enjoy watching these because you do your research. I wish I could do what you do. But, well done!
+wet ok bad example, but ats-v's competition have similar or more power(m3 3.0 tt straight 6, c63amg 4.0 tt v8, new audi rs4 will probably get 3.0 tt v6) but op probably thought that v6 is NA ! PS: not bashing on ats-v i think that power is still impressive, although I don't like design that much)
it's not artificial on the steering,it's the sensors reading the road thousands of time a second and is reacting! The manual shift response might have to do with what mode you have it in other wise it's default is to shift slower for fuel economy and so you don't get into trouble in city traffic! Just my opinion and the little facts I know. Great review. always like your reviews over other channels
I feel that automakers should standardize the "+" and "-" on their gear levers. Some companies have "+" forward and "-" backwards, while others vice versa. Personally, I prefer having "+" backwards and "-" forward because I feel that it resembles that of true sequential shifters in race cars.
+Car Geeks Anonymous For me, I see motorcycle shifting as up/down (vertical) while for cars, either sequential or manumatic, I see them as shifting forward/back (horizontal). So I personally don't compare between motorcycles and cars, but I can see where you are coming from.
When you consider H-patterns on a manual, the idea of which direction an upshift or downshift should be gets even more convoluted, because the direction is basically nullified as an issue of contention. I do like a right up pull and left down pull on paddles though.
Car Geeks Anonymous H-patterns are pretty much a beautiful thing of their own (especially 6-speed H-patterns because they just feel right - 4 and 5 are a bit too lacking while 7 and 8 are just a tad too many). :) However, flappy paddles with right-up, left-down are definitely one huge step at standardizing sequential or manumatic shifters in my opinion. I especially did not appreciate when automakers used to put up/down toggles on both sides of the steering wheel. My dad''s 2000 Audi A6 had the up/down toggles on both sides of the wheel and it was downright confusing to use (especially because the toggles are relatively small in size).
Dude the Cadillac Que system is not meant to be "push button operation", it is designed for you to swipe without having to keep on the dash and not taking your eye off the road. I'm thinking that the designers were thinking of movement within the cabin as you are driving, so the interface of the panel requires a swiping motion for activation.....just saying
Just use climate control. Set it at say 72 degrees, and put the system on "auto". It is like complaining the headlight switch iS on the stick. I have not owned a car where i put headlights on since 1996. My older cadillac turns the wipers on in rain, and i have not touched the hvac buttons much. I LOVE my ATS.
Playing in my playground. Although that road is very narrow (scary) in spots. Love the reviews. Last week with the cold dry weather would have been better.
yeah from 1:20 - 1:30 mark on this video, the waterfall is in reverse. I think it was shot at the car first then transitioned towards the waterfall for an effect. great review on this beast btw.
+thenightlifenj1 I love it because of that. Brings back a lot of good memories. Kinda makes me nostalgic. Plus, I love how simple and clear it is, not like the digital clustefucks of today.
thenightlifenj1 as an owner of an ATS, the guage cluster DURING THE DAY is definitely one of the let Downs. Come night time though, and the led back light +blue halos really look sharp. The only problem I have with the V is the blue halos become ugly red, and look like acura guages
I am an ATS owner and I agree, the guage cluster isn't pretty. Maybe Cadillac though you'd keep your eyes on the road. And to argue the point I absolutely hate blue and white in any guage cluster, I had pure red in my previous car, left the guages up on brightness and never had a problem with it. Now that I have the blue and white I have it set very dimly and my eyes still become bothered by the blue and white light while driving. Doesn't scream comfort and luxury to me.
Great job, your reviews never disappoint. Have you ever thought of reviewing older cars? Like 1990-2010. I just feel like a lot of your viewers like myself are young (and broke) so we cant exactly go drop 5 figures on a new vehicle so reviews on older cars could be helpful.
Thought about yes, but reviewing newer cars reduces risk significantly on my end. I have to make sure the vehicles I drive are insured (manufacturers take care of this) so that I don't tank if something were to go wrong. I'm always looking to minimize risk.
Dang everyone is focusing on the waterfall haha! I didn't even notice it until I read the comments. I watched the whole video and it was definitely entertaining as always. :)
Don't know if it's been pointed out yet, but the 8L90 8-speed is not a ZF unit like the Aston. It's GM's own design. Otherwise a very agreeable review.
MORE truck stuff! The car information is stellar, but it would be cool if you looked into the diesel Colorado, Titan Xd, and so on... The turbo on the "kind of new" five liter cummins is video worthy on its own.
CncObsession which did you like better, the atsv or the ctsv, as whole car to own? I like the manual in the atsv, but am not a fan of the guages. The ctsv looks sooooooo bad ass, and is much more luxurious on the inside, but no manual :(. Which one did you like better?
GM fix the terrible Que infotainment system, update the look of the instrumentation and get rid of the piano black finger print magnet finishes and these things will fly off the show room floors. Thanks for the 1440p quality uploads
You didn't sit in the back seat for reference. I have some tall family members, so I always appreciated that part of your review. Do you have any input for the back seats?
+h3i1ig Your tall family members won't be sitting back there. The short ones may struggle as well - tends to be the case with most two doors, for better or worse.
Beautiful Caddy. My Dad has a 2011 CTS Coup, its a pretty nice car over all but the transmission is kind of goofy. However, that car has a look and style like no other American car or even EU or Japan offer. The ATS looks good but is not as unique as the older CTS's look. Kind of a shame in my opinion. PS.... If you take that Caddy for a test drive in Portland you might get the impression that its not built well...like the fenders are falling off the car or it doesn't drive true. Don't worry though, the cars fine. Its just our local gov hasn't repaired the roads since 1987 and now we need $1+ Billion to fix them. Maybe we'll get the money from the 35k people moving here every year. Thats right I forgot, the city needs that money for art programs and other programs like the ones that help the homeless remain homeless.
Is there a program to make the 0-60 videos at the end? Showing the amount of gas/brake applied, speed, g-meter, etc? Or was that something in the caddy you were recording?
Please don't take this negatively. This is a great video and I enjoyed the whole thing. But, 0-60 times just aren't relevant any more for performance cars. That test is traction limited. Especially when the road is wet and cold. 60 - 130 is the real test because it takes out the traction factor. I'm sure you could find a "professional driver" on a "closed course" to do that for each future review.
I know it's random, but if you can get your hands a 2nd gen Lexus IS-F, it would be amazing to see a detailed review on that car because it has lots of great technology that I know you can help explain well.
Fair review but those seats are amazing and better than the standard seats. I think you need more time adjusting them. They are sweet! Also the who uses a scroll wheel wheel but mostly sub 30K cars...most have buttons. Still that is your opinion and not out of sort. Only other thing is this car is not heavy by any measure....any.
I can't stop wandering about the summer tires issue. I live in central Europe where basically everyone switches to winter tires during winter months and in some countries it is even compulsory. How do you deal with this issue in Oregon? I am not surprised that in California or Florida all season tires are the norm, but I would think in Oregon or New England winter tires should be standard during cold months. All the best in 2016 and keep up the good work!
+Krzysztof Cichy I switch to winter tires with my personal car here in Oregon. This is a press car that travels all over the US, so it keeps the tires that it comes from the factory with.
Nice car, but it sounds like it has a bad aircon system if you have to fiddle with it when you are driving. Doesn't it keep its set temp in the cabine?
+Engineering Explained I just put mine at 21C and leave it there all year long, it´s cold enough in the summer and almost to warm in the winter. Only buttons I use are Defrost.
With Celsius we don't have to scroll around that much \o/ =D Anyway, why some planetary transmission has longer/shorter and/or smoother shift than others? Basic design; actuators; sensors and computer; or manufacturing tolerances?
+celaCH1 It will automatically step down to 1st, but you can put it into 2nd. Won't allow skipping second, as I was thinking about a 3rd gear pull since even second spun very easily.
+Engineering Explained Alright, thanks for your quick response! :) I didn't know there were AT which allow you to accelerate in 2. gear (from a standstill). I must say I quite like those new cars from Cadillac.
+David F +David F that's why I think it could work. Seeing Rcr with a straight man to play off, as well he gives an opposite review style, focusing on what the car "means" to people but often lacking the ability to list performance features and statistics in an engaging manner. Unlike E.E.
That 0-60 looked like a ton of fun, seemed to keep it pretty straight. I take it it's not to twitchy with wheel slip? Oh and waterfall, I don't want to be left out.
+Rangifulla It was a bit twitchy, at times a little sketch to keep it straight. It really wanted to spin no matter what speed you're at haha. I found the traction control seemed to be more aggressive when you were turning, less in a straight line, making it interfere less when you're just trying to accelerate. That's actually a lot of fun when it's dry, and how I'd prefer it, but in the wet it wasn't super confidence inspiring. That said, it's silly to expect exceptional performance out of tires that are designed for much higher temps (and obviously dry roads would be nice).
It's rumored that this car will be fitted with the LS7 engine. Then GM comes out and says "No it won't happen." Probably because there would be too many Caddy performance models.
How do you calculate the fuel economy numbers? I'm trying to gauge my fuel economy in a 2008 Jetta S and the way I calculate I can only ever manage 21 mpg out of a 2.5, even when I'm deliberately keeping acceleration and revs as low as possible? The rather rudimentary method I use it resetting the trip computer at each fill up, and taking note of the gallons it took to fill the tank, and dividing the miles traveled on the trip computer by the gallons to full. In theory it seems like it should work, but the numbers feel off.
+Jackisaboss1208 I used to do this too when I bought a new car. I tracked the mileage on a spreadsheet and was working out all kinds of interesting trends for fun. My conspiracy theorist's brain concludes that you are not actually getting as much fuel as the pump tells you! If you and we may be getting ripped off by the retailers. I mean, how do we verify exactly how much fuel we get when we pump it into a closed tank ?
have you tested the Cts-v its a little heavier but has 200 more hp. also if you thinking of reviewing the new 6th gem camaro don't because you just did in this video. they both had the same drive train configurations and have the same chassis and suspension the only thing different is the body panels and interior.
+Car Geeks Anonymous I would pit that in the drivetrain category. isn't it annoying that gm didn't use the zeta platform for the camaro. I mean it's supposed to be a long car but they have it using the same platform from their sport/touring division.
All reports are that the smaller, lighter Alpha makes for a much better car, though the SS still gets a lot of love, if only no sales to make it worth keeping around.
I have PSSs, and I live in Seattle. Mine grip fine in the cold rain. I can't even move in snow, but the tires are really good in wet weather performance. Seems kind of odd that car had so many issues. I do understand that car has a lot of power, but still seems odd.
+Bahooki I didn't find it too odd. I've had a decent number of RWD cars with summer tires that can't quite handle the cold. Even the STI I had in (on summer Dunlops) would light up all four if I gave it a good launch. Summer tires just don't love the cold!
+Engineering Explained Hm! Do you think warm weather rain would give better performance? I mean I only have an E92 328i, but even dumping the clutch from 3k I get very minimal spin. Must just not be enough power. I've yet to use the tires in warm weather rain. Looking forward to the comparison!!
The first tail light shot really gives an example of fit and finish.... Gaps are huge and panels from the factory are slightly out of alignment, even on a low production vehicle. Won't find that on the German competition. I still love the car though.
10:01 you look over your shoulder as you enter the highway, which means you take your eyes off the road. Are your side mirrors adjusted correctly? It looks like they are not.
+Chris Mayer Increasing RPM's so when you put it in a lower gear, the engine doesn't have to catch up (Rev matching). no lift shifting I believe is when you keep your foot on the gas the entire time.
+thescoolestkyline okay I know what Rev matching is I just didn't know if there was something different since he found the need to mention it, for the no lift shifting, that sounds really cool but I feel like that would interfere really highly with downshifting, would it not?
+Chris Mayer No lift shifting would be for upshifting only. Rev-matching is automated, the driver can choose not to heel-toe and let the computer do the work for a perfect downshift.
+Chris Mayer No-lift upshifting means no need to lift off of the throttle during clutch disengagement, which means the turbo stays spooled without the computer cutting off the engine, for a quicker launch. It will hold it at redline, if I understand it right.
