Ive added a link to my follow up video on the freon type at the end of the video. Just an informational video talking about the issues of hot air blowing from the driver side vents and cold air from passanger side vents.
🫡 I just looked this up. Thank you for sharing. It seems as if they’re now admitting to the issue but they’re not extending the warranty for the shaft seal. They’re only making it known for the issue. At least from what I read under the tsb. Which i think is ridiculous.
@@HandsOnDismantler you're right! Sounds like they'll only replace the shaft seal if the vehicle is under warranty. I personally have my ac blowing hot air on my 2020 Si (65K). I am trying to inspect the condenser before I go to them just in case they deny replacing it under ext warranty by saying there's a stone damage that caused the leak. Very sad tbh.
Yes thats best to do. Also because i don’t trust them lol. If you can or know someone, it’s best to get leak detector fluid into the system (safely) and then use a black light to find the leak before taking it in. That way you know they arnt pulling a fast one on you.
@@HandsOnDismantler Just taken my vehicle to a dealership. Upon asking, I was told that there's an extended warranty for condenser and compressor shaft seal. They found my condenser leaking and waiting for parts now.
This need to be a recall HONDA!!! People spend $30,000 on your new civic and expect it all to last like the Honda should!! My AC is mess up after 40,000 miles.... why!! No excuse!! Even my 2001 Honda Civic AC still work!!! Stop being cheap and recall and fix everyone AC issue!!! Or else bye bye Honda and hello Toyota
John Moua yup! I agree. But even Toyota has allowed their quality to deteriorate. unfortunately all dealerships besides high end vehicles are treating their customers like complete crap.
My 2016 Civic AC stopped blowing cold air this summer. It has 34k miles and is just a few months out of the 3 year warranty (bought new in 2016). Dealer wants to charge $450 just to diagnose the problem (not actually fix it). Talked with Honda USA and they won't guarantee that they would cover the fix. Very frustrating. Not sure if I would buy a Honda again.
@@HandsOnDismantler Nope. I was expecting Honda to be a reliable car. Most minor work I can do myself but the 2016 Civic uses that new refrigerant so you pretty much have to take it to the dealer for any AC work.
invenio1978 I agree, that was a reason I go to Honda as well but these days those claims are no longer reliable. These days cars are obviously not made the same. They’re very cheap and the price continues to rise. Because of all the electronics and continued revisions of parts being used having a extended warranty is always a good idea if you can haggle a good price for it. You just can’t trust automakers these days. 😞
Hey @invenio1978, I have the same problem at 41,000 miles. I can’t believe the reliability and durability of Honda’s A/C problem. Before I went to a Honda dealership, I researched. And I presented my research and mentioned Honda’s 2013 lawsuit settlement. They charged $152 for evac, Freon recharge and dye service. After a 4 hour appointment, they couldn’t find a leak in the engine bay. So they said to come back after the Freon stops blowing cold air. They said they may have to spend 9 hours to take the dashboard out, and gave an estimated &124-129 labor cost per hour. I’m watching DIY videos to educate myself on the leak and then hopefully that will decrease the repair cost. If all fails, I’m lawyering up with the current class action lawsuit against Honda for the 2016-2018 Honda Civic AC problem.
@@WKaznartist Sorry to hear your problems. They wanted something like $600 just to diagnose the problem and said the fix may be thousands. I haven't done anything about it at this point... not sure if I will at that price.
I had this same issue ended up being I had low refrigerant. I also had a leak. Ended up being my ac condenser. 1,000 service. Thank God I had a warranty. I only had the car a month
Problem is that 2016 Civic comes with either R134 which is cheap and available to public at Auto Parts stores. Other Civics have the 1234YF freon which is $700 for a 10lb tank, average cost for service is $500-$700.
Another problem is that since 1234YF is still considered new, the equipment such as condensers and compressors are not perfect and have many faults. If you have a 2016 Honda Civic with the new gas and you're experiencing AC issues, it's worth while to go to the dealer since there recalls, especially with their condensers and compressors which have been proven to be defective and leak. In fact Honda extended condenser warranty replacement to 10 years from date of vehicle purchase, regardless of milage.
Just got a new condenser on my 2018 Civic EX-T. Honda service didn’t even question it and told me the AC is under Honda’s extended 10-year warranty for this model. Five hours later, Honda service dropped off my car to my house with no bill. My four year old Civic has over 116,000 miles with a perfect maintenance record.
This helped me a lot. Because I have less than 30000 miles and like you said it's a closed system and at that mile mark I didn't think it would be low t.y
Thanks Brother for this video. Really help me a lot. My daughter got the 2016 civic basic model had the same problem thanks to your video she safe couple hundred bucks. We appreciate videos like your.
Thank you! I appreciate it. I’m glad to hear she figured it out. Your best bet may be to find a independent shop that does AC repair since her civic may not be under warranty, if the condenser is the issue, there is a extended warranty on it for replacement but only if the leak was not caused by damage, I have some other videos talking about it if you want to check them out
I have the same exact problem. I purchased the car yesterday and the ac was working well this morning as. But when I got out of work and went home My vents from the driver side were blowing hot air all the time
Uriel Morales Rodriguez yes, long story short, the car is under the extended warranty. Not manufacturer. The extended warranty company said since they didn’t find a leak they weren’t going to pay for the service. I spoke with the manager because obviously there’s a leak. Freon doesn’t just evaporate. So he agreed to cover it. But yes if it’s under the 3 yr 36k mile warranty they should not be charging you anything to look at it or fix it (unless it’s your fault) Thanks for watching!
Did you hear any hissing behind the dashboard whenever you turned on the AC? I just started having the issue as you, and I'm outside of warranty. I'm assuming this is from a leak.
Efren Aguilar I had the same problem and got mine fixed before the 3 year warranty expired. They had to replace the whole ac system. Just yesterday got something in the mail from Honda, that because of continued complaints the ac is now covered for 10 years.
I just got a letter from Honda to replace the ac condenser. Did the mechanic mention the source of the problem? I'm hoping it's just the condenser, but the hissing behind the dashboard may make the dealership say otherwise.
@@efrenaguilar3684 A hissing behind the dashboard when AC is on is the expansion valve feeding gaseous refrigerant into the evaporator due to a very low refrigerant charge. With the correct refrigerant charge, there's a liquid head right before the expansion valve's inlet and the expansion valve feeds a mist of liquid refrigerant into the evaporator, and this will only come up as a really faint squirting noise and only during low heat load conditions when the expansion valve closes the most. As the system refrigerant charge decreases, it progressively turns into a bubbling noise and then it becomes a steady hiss hearable in every heat load condition (it's the expansion valve going wide open trying to maintain a low superheat at all costs). Did a lot of tests with automotive evaporators and expansion valves.
I bought a 2016 Civic EXL in June 2016.....just few months went by where I noticed it vibrates in drive mode but not moving ( such as idling as at a red light).....I put a plastic bag passenger side and can see bag shaking like crazy..ughhh....I have not done anything yet, cause frankly i don't want to pay for repairs...now, I just realize first time I turned on AC this year, I get hot air. Last summer, AC worked perfect. I am regretting this purchase so much, dammit I wish I did not buy this civic. Not to mention, the car loan payments and city property tax. yes, I'm complaining.
I stumbled upon this video after having the same problem with my 2016 Civic Ex with 68k miles. A local mechanic quoted $85 for diagnosis and I ended up calling the local dealership and asking them if they could check my VIN and see if there is any warranty and they did state only "AC condenser is covered under extended warranty" and fix will be done for free. I have an appt scheduled in 2days. They did say there will however be a $250 auth charge for any other issues and will be only deducted if I authorize them to do it.
Is your civic no longer under the 36k mile warranty? If not then unfortunately they can do that. :/ my issue was the ac compressor. But at the time it was covered under my extended warranty.
@@HandsOnDismantler they did replace the condenser for free but also stated there is a leak on the compressor and $1600 has to be paid for the fix. Not sure what to do at this point

I was a huge hknda fan for years but after our 2016 honda civic touring i am gonna sadly try another brand . This has been a problem car , ac gave out after 40k , the display screen flickers on and off and jitters . Gas mileage is nowhere near advertised and i baby it as well as keep it maintained perfect and early.sad my 98 civic with a k swap runs perfect , exceptional gas mileage, reliable , fast , everything a honda should and used to be...
A month ago, the same problem occurred to me, I went to honds for service with the letter and explain what is happening, and the guy told me that it seems that the car has little refrigerant and that it needs to be recharged and emptied and inspected for leaks. He made me wait more than 4 hours and told me there are no leaks and that give it a week and if the same problem happend again he tell me to go to the dealer and will have to inspcect the condencer now on july 14th my air conditioner is not cooling. Got charge 343.56$. (just for the refill and vaccum)
I had this same issue, I wasn't able to find the leak until almost 8 months later! give it some time and invest in a leak detector light so you can look for it yourself. once you find the leak you can take the car in and let them know where it is to save yourself the hassle.
There's a video stating that condenser leaks can cause too much oil to leak out and it'll cause the shaft seals on a compressor to fail. The oil keeps the seals from drying up. Therefore the compressor failing can be from a bad condenser leak.
This could happen but a leak would cause the system to go into protection mode and the compressor wouldn’t engage. Just depends how much it leaks at any certain time.
JoJo-Show if you have paid for an extended warranty yes. But it’s not under Honda’s extended “condenser” warranty. It only covers the condenser on the front of the vehicle.
Took my 2017 ex-l hatchback to the Honda dealer last week because it was not blowing cold enough during the day. On long drives, it would stop blowing and if I turned it off and back on after a while, it blew out literal ice particles from the vents. I suspected low on freon, so I used a gauge and read 30 psi, which is slightly low imo. They said it was slightly low on freon (which tells anyone with common sense there's a leak). But they said they couldn't find the leak. $300! I was upset when the said they evacuated the system and added freon, yet it was still not blowing cold enough. But now it only blows really cold from the passenger side. I went back pretty upset and the manager told me it was possible that it is the air blend actuator is not opening properly on the driver's side. He said he'll check it for free, and I think they better, because $300 for it to still not work properly is ridiculous.
Wow I’m sorry to hear that. Honda really let us down with the 10th gen. Often times it’s a really slow leak. They said the same to me but I was under warranty. It took about 8k miles before it started showing the leak detector dye. Hopefully they fix your issue.
@@HandsOnDismantler mine is at 70k and it has the extended warranty for the condenser, but they somehow said it had "no leaks at this time" I think it has a leak and/or some type of restriction. About to take my civic to Honda to see what they’ll say. The service rep on the phone said they’re not aware of any ac issues and because it’s not a recall, it will cost $$$ to do it outside of warranty. 2016 civic with only 56K miles. Yes pass warranty, but this should definitely be corrected free of charge if its a known issue. Wish me luck!
Ray Saldana if you can do it yourself, you can purchase the Freon with dye online for cheap, and you’ll also need the adaptor that goes with this type of Freon. Also order a detector light. Refill it and drive it around for about 3k miles or when it starts blowing warm air again. Then in complete darkness use the light to find your leak. Then you can take it to who ever and have it replaced or you can do it yourself once you see where it’s leaking from. 👍🏻
It looks like the entire 10th generation of Civics has the AC problem. My son has just bought a used 2019 Civic at the dealership. He noticed the AC wasn’t working. Luckily, the condenser was replaced by the dealer under warranty. He still has a 99 Civic and its original AC works fine.
not necessarily, there is a chance it is part of the freon leak issues and has leaked out the freon. once this happens the ac compressor will go into a "safe mode" and wont work to stop any damage from happening. the freon in the compressor is what lubricates the internals. so since your ac compressor isnt turning on you would need to get it serviced by a professional or under warranty. buying the normal guages you find online wont work for you because you would need the ac compressor to run in order to pressure test the ac system at home. if its not working you wont be able to use the "at home" guages.
@@HandsOnDismantler The R1234yf (the real Freon has been discontinued; refrigerant is a more suitable term) isn't a lubricant. It's just that the refrigerant has to carry oil around the system and return enough oil to the compressor at all times since the compressor lacks a dedicated lubrication mechanism (oil sump and pump). Once refrigerant gets low enough oil return decreases. Damage (worn pistons, cylinder walls, swashplate, piston shoes, bearings) may actually have already occurred to the compressor's internals before the pressure transducer senses a low enough high side pressure and stops the clutch from engaging. This does not necessarily result in compressor seizure, but it might result in weaker pumping action and cooling capacity.
Yes looks like who’s everyone got a Honda Civic maybe from 16 to 18 they have been having the same problem I got a 2017 and I got a problem like that in after a year and now well I went to the delivery they fix it they charge me $1000 because their condenser was damaged and the warranty didn’t cover it because they told me that he was not thrown factory defect and now the problem it’s back again and now they said probably will be the compressor and he could be $2000 charge to fix it I think Honda Civic is is not good like it used to be!!

Now I have to spend more money to have somebody competent check for leaks and then take that back to Honda for their response.
Wow so much for #helpfulhondapeople I’m sorry you’re going through that. My issue was the ac compressor as well. But I purchased the extended warranty so it was covered. Try going through a independent shop. It may be cheaper.
I wouldn’t say avoid it. BUT make sure before buying the civic that who ever you buy it from provides you DOCUMENTED proof that ac system has been fixed. If they don’t or can’t then I would avoid it.
I am saying it got compressor reliability problem. My compressor leak at 3 year , 47K mile. Waited for almost a month for shortage on compressor. it was cover by extended warranty but it was a long stay in the shop.
I have a 2016 Honda Civic that is showing equal pressure on the AC gauges. I’ve already changed the compressor, condenser, and expansion valve. Any suggestions???
Take it in for an oil change to any dealer and ask for a multi point inspection and they should let you know what’s wrong with it. And you don’t have to pay.
I tried to get a multipoint inspection at a Honda dealership and they said they will not look at the A/C unless I paid $189.99. I moved out of state and they had a free A/C check up and said there’s a leak. They then said to diagnose it further, they’ll charge $152.00 for Evac, recharge and dye. Well after 4 hours, they couldn’t find a leak either. And told me to come back after the A/C stops blowing cold air. They said they may have to spend 9 hours take out the dashboard at $124-129 labor cost per hour! I contacted another Honda dealership and they said it would be very extremely rare for the leak to be in the dashboard. But this guy said to drive my car for another 500-1000 miles and then come in to get check the dye for leaks. I’m going to get myself a UV flashlight and find the leak myself to reduce the cost. I’m thinking of joining the class action lawsuit with Andre Wong and his 2 law firms.

Hands On Dismantler so I had a talk with the supervisor and let him know about my warranty and best he could do is charge me $170 instead of the $450 they had quoted me at first for the to run the diagnostic and to add the dye.
BEASTIN TEBO that sounds reasonable, BUT before you take it in look at your ac condenser from the front of the car through the bumper and look for any major damage, if there is damage they won’t cover it. So it’ll save you the $170 and your time. What I mean by damage is like a rock hitting it and causing a dent or damage you can clearly see. If you notice that the little “fins” are bent. That’s ok and won’t void any warranty.

Like i said its blowing cool air, just not ice cold like i think it should. Also on extra hot days (90°F) it takes an extra 20 minutes to cool down and doesn't get as cool as it otherwise would. Ive also had my car worked on because of buzzing sounds coming from my transmission which they told me was a solenoid issue. They "replaced" the solinoid body and i still have the sound come back intermittently on startup. It was less often but it still came back. The whole situation is really frustrating because no one at Honda no matter where i go wants to help me out. Honda has always been the type of company to dance all around my problems and avoid actually working on my car at all costs and thats why i absolutely hate Honda.
TEXASBLAZE 101 dang man, trust me I feel you on this! Have you tried contacting a lemon law lawyer? Also look on ebay for a “leak detector black light” I just bought one for like $5 shipped. If they put leak detector dye in the ac Freon you can look for the leak your self. That’s how I saw my ac compressor was leaking. I would order the $5 light and while you’re waiting for it to be shipped contact a lemon law lawyer and let them look at your paper work, you don’t have to still be in the warranty period to qualify because your issues started when you’re under warranty. At least that’s how it works in California.
