With an ongoing horsepower war among luxury sport sedans, Lexus decides to finally add some much needed muscle into the IS lineup, meet the replacement for the underpowered IS250, the 2016 IS300 promises to offer more power versus its turbocharged German rivals, but does that naturally aspirated V6 offer better performance?

I'll tell you why you should buy this Lexus over an Audi A4.......reliability! NO competition.

I paid $22k for my 2016 a few months ago. 30k miles. Tons of options. Used is the way to go. Then go and get the RR Racing tune to match the 350 power. There is absolutely no reason for this car to be detuned other than to fit in the Lexus line up at a specific point.

Just stepped from an older Cayenne S to this IS300. Definite step down (OK 3 or 4) in performance BUT much much much better as a daily driver. Wife will get this one in a few months I think it'll work well for her. I find myself wanting a bit more power and crispness. However, it succeeds wonderfully in it's appointed task; a comfortable luxury AWD sedan with just a touch, a hint, a suggestion of sport. It's a keeper.

@@volitiveclover It held up well with no issues as expected after 21k miles, but just replaced it with a white on red 2016 GS350 F-Sport a couple weeks ago which is a massive improvement. I wanted to go back to a mid-size sedan as well as a V6 (Drove a 2015 Toyota Camry XSE V6 previously). Plus the cupholders are bigger & in a far better location (my only major complaint about the IS). It's in really good condition & has 41k miles. It has over 30 more features than what my IS had & it even still has the original window sticker which is nice to have & shows that it was $58k when it was new. I paid $28k which is a steal for what you get. It has a smoother ride & even better handling than my IS did.

The is250 only has 205hp with its v6 because all lexus engines are underutalized for added reliability. This means they could have got much more hp out of it but instead opted for excellent reliability overall. I have a 2006 is250 and I dont find it slow at all especially compared to my 2005 hyundai sonata 4 cylinder. Im almost always leaving folks at the light. Now for racing sure then it may be slow however Im not looking for races or speeding tickets just getting from point a to b. However I will say I do have a standard shift and that may make a difference.
@mattmolloy636
@mattmolloy636 8 лет назад
You really can't compare the Acura TLX to the Lexus IS 300 AWD. The TLX is total garbage. Also, the Infiniti brand is awful in its own regard as well. Lexus is the only Japanese luxury brand that actually competes with the Euro brands. That said, you didn't give this car a fair shake. Opinions are one thing, but exaggerating on the speed and the material quality is certainly outside of the bounds of opinion and need to be based on facts.
@hy77281
@hy77281 8 лет назад
Saying that the TLX is "total garbage" and that the entire Infiniti brand is "awful" sounds like some pretty exaggerated opinions to me.
@mattmolloy636
@mattmolloy636 8 лет назад
You may be correct. I could have gotten my point across by mentioning that they're both lower quality brands that are inferior in reliability, interior quality and design. They're actually doing a disservice to the reputation of Japanese cars being superior to American cars, especially now that Lincoln has started to redesign their vehicles and have made some excellent quality vehicles that break any notion of luxury that Acura and Infiniti may have enjoyed in the 90's. Acura is more of a "premium" brand at this point, and is no longer seen as a luxury brand by most. Infinitis plummet in value for a reason.
@trueG922
@trueG922 8 лет назад
Wtf are u talking about the Lexus spindle grill design is the ugliest by far. Acura and Infiniti actually have decent exterior designs and updated power train and transmissions. Lexus has been using the same engine and transmission over 10 years? U high as Fk bruh
@mattmolloy636
@mattmolloy636 8 лет назад
You said they've been using the same ten years with a question mark, which makes me feel like you don't know what you're saying for sure. They haven't been using the same engines for ten years, which makes me question which one of us is actually getting high. Since when has cheap vinyl and plood been considered luxury?
@Zachman676
@Zachman676 8 лет назад
Cheap vinyl & plood? That's literally what this Lexus interior is made out of. Lexus is trying way too hard. Infiniti is doing now what they have been doing for years. Building great looking and driving luxury cars that can embarrass its German competition for way less money. And Lexus engines are out of date.

After watching the video I'm a little disappointed in Redline Reviews. I understand they think the Audi A4 is a better choice in certain regards however, the video is titled " 2016 Lexus IS300 - Redline: Review" NOT " Everything the Lexus does wrong vs German competitors". If I wanted to know everything Audi did right with the A4 I would have researched that not this. Again not saying it's the perfect car obviously that's all very opinion based just seems weird to insult the car basically the entire time.

This car is beautiful. By far the best looking car in the class. Yeah the 250 is slow for car guys that want speed but for people who don't care about speed news flash thats most people.. the 250 and this 300 model is more than enough powerful for daily driving. You idoits think a car needs 400hp to be able to drive. You can have fun in a car with 200hp. He goes on about interior materials I have been in Camrys and I have been in Corollas there is nothing in those cars that relate to this Lexus. This guy just enjoys taking jabs at Lexus. @theredline
@theredline 8 лет назад
While the Mercedes and BMW do end up costing more than this Lexus, it's hard to ignore all that you get in the new Audi A4 for the same money as this Lexus. We have nothing against Lexus and Toyota personally, but we do feel the current IS is due for a refresh, which it got for 2017 and looks as if Lexus addressed our concern with the small infotainment screen. Still no Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, but Lexus just isn't the leader in interior design and quality anymore. They need to really do something to bring them back to where the Germans have stepped it up to.

Look at this choice - no convertibles, roadsters, station wagons, hatchbacks (excluding discontinued hybrid-only CT200h), no DCTs, no manuals, no 8-sp. auto with AWD, very poor choice of engines (which are all slower than their competitors), no V12 or diesels at all, outdated infotainment with no Apple CarPlay/Android Auto or handwriting recognition, cheesy styling and interiors ( and this list goes on and on...) Lets get real for a moment though, lexus in no way competes with mercedes, audi or bmw, more like acura, lincoln, buick...

I agree the C class has the best interior in this class and that's cause the C class has been overhauled and a new gen unveiled. This Lexus Is is the same since 2013 in my opinion adding spindle grill doesn't mean the interior has been revamped. The only German competitor with a better interior is the Mercedes-Benz c class but that has a far worse depreciation value and far less reliable. So you should always state the cons and pros of each brand and not just what u prefer. I don't agree one bit that the Audi A4 has a better interior though. I don't want to judge the 3 series harshly cause like the Lexus is still the same model that has been around for years just updated.

curseknight5 Yeah but it's still down on performance and fuel economy compared to others in the class. It should have just been the IS200T and IS350.
@curseknight5
@curseknight5 8 лет назад
I don't know what you mean by performance because the Lexus IS models are top handling vehicles in class with a great solid chassis and great steering. I feel like you're defining performance with power which means nothing for someone who works in more urban areas.
@IKhanNot

curseknight5 I wasn't impressed with the IS 350 I test drove a few years ago. I did drive the previous generation but the cramped interior (I'm not even a big guy) was terrible and the handling wasn't even all that. Shit a C300 Sport handled better despite the vague steering feel and felt far more solid and significant than the Lexus. It felt more Toyota than Lexus which in this case isn't a good thing.

ive owned a audi a8 bmw 325. good cars but not reliable at all. german cars suck in the long run. when buying a car i think about performance just as much as the next guy but i also think about reliability. lexus/toyota has always been #1 for being reliable. i love lexus.

5L V8 in IS, why not V10 557 horse power from LFA? man, you should review the car in terms of how people use the car for everyday. Not just power.

i'm currently leasing this car and i agree with everything you say. it's a fun and comfortable ride, but gas mileage is not great unless you're light on the accelerator. i'm coming from a base 2008 accord sedan, so the ride and interior/features are definitely better, but damn do i miss that gas mileage.

@NS416
@NS416 7 лет назад
They're different. They're configured differently and have different power output. V4 don't exist, and the 2.0l i4? It's better then the 3GR-FE, because the torque is higher and also comes at a lower RPM, meaning that in real life your acceleration will be faster.

great review man! But i have to say i really hate the stupid infotainment systems that audi bmw and mercedes use. also i really hate this lexus system. Do we use a seperate remote to controll our smartphones? Really a good touchscreen is the way to go! the new sync 3 from ford is my favourite infotainment system at the time!
@SDav21

I feel that touch screen doesn't work in a car. Not until cars are more autonomous. A touch screen is distracting and there is no tactile feel. When going over bumpy roads or even just driving it you have to look where to press because it is too easy to press something else. The way the Germans do it is correct because while you are driving, it is much easier to make selections using something with tactile feedback to make selections.

I got the is300 f sport and I love it. But my choice in deciding on buying the 300 over the 350 was price obviously.(when u get to a dealership you will find prices are alot more different than you think like 5 to 8 even 10 thousand dollar difference depending on package). But I knew it was just a detuned 350 engine. My question, how is it detuned? I feel like its the ecu. Would a plug and play chip open up the rest of its potential or am I going to have to go thru the usual intake, exhaust etc? Any help would be appreciated. I figured I could open up that last 50 hp and save a fe grand but idk what exactly was detuned. It literally looks exactly the same as the 350.

@imjsutthatguy
@imjsutthatguy 7 лет назад
+Harold D oh it's possible and it's definitely the ECU. take it to a reputable shop an they will show u the torque and HP curve flat line at ???? rpm( I'm sorry it was months ago now I asked this question I forget where it flat lines exactly) but that's the tell tale sign of an an ECU "issue". but I say reputable cause I had mine install and tamper with the computer and I don't know how much I'm pushing at the wheels but it's definitely more than I was before. I'm still going to do the lil things besides the fart can exhaust. to gaudy for nice cars like ours :p. but only cost me a few hundred I didn't get a plug an play ecu tune tho. have a pro do it.
@ARentz07
@ARentz07 7 лет назад
RR Racing has tuning options for this car, including raising the rev limiter to 7200 RPM. If you don't want to do that they can basically make it into a 350 by making the ECU mapping the same as in the 350.

You know, I like the car but it does seem a bit expensive at $50k for what you're getting. At that price point a BMW M240 with much nicer amenities and that sweet and powerful 3 liter inline 6 is a reality.

Its 50k yesss but the car will go 250,000 miles with no hiccups..will the m240 do that? Off course but u gonnnna spennnnd waaaaaay more in maintenance cost..another word- MONEY PIT!!!... Im team Lexus all day😎😎😎
@Trades46
@Trades46 7 лет назад
My gut feeling tells me the 2.0T (the 8AR-FTS) in longitudinal form isn't compatible with the AWD system in the Lexus stables and that modifying either the engine or powertrain to fit may have exceeded the small budget on this aging design where $ should be spent on designing its successor. So in order to have a cheaper AWD model, it was more cost effective to take what they already have, the IS350 AWD and add some new code to the ECU to detune the entire thing and sell it off as a rebadged IS300 AWD.

That's really a moot point that doesn't apply, the Maxima is a front wheel drive family car with a CVT. More horses doesn't dictate superiority, that's an American misconception.
