Just bought a 2018 Pro 4x and Love it. They asked if I wanted to trade in my 2001 Frontier Crew Cab... Hell no!, I love that truck too, and its still runs like new with 225k miles on it. That's part of the reason I stuck with Nissan and bought another Frontier!

The Frontier would still be my top choice of all the currently available midsize trucks. The value proposition is unbeatable, especially in Pro-4x trim. It's at least $5000 cheaper than the other two in top off-road trim. I also love the fact that it's smaller than the others, which makes it better suited for off-roading and maneuverability. The Frontier is still a great truck and an outstanding value.

They haven't tanked the Frontier because of people like us. "Why does the Toyota cost 5 or 6k more?" "Because it's a Toyota" Me "Huh? Later." My 2019 Pro 4x is loaded, including sunroof, for thousands less. I just watch a few videos that pop up to tell anyone on the fence how nice the Frontiers are.

That's why I just bought a 2019 Frontier Pro-4x. I get leather seats with driver and passenger power adjustability, rear differential locker, a bed I can actually reach (I'm 5'8"), and jeep-like capability. Power moonroof, Siri voice connectivity, roof rack, bed rails with adjustable tie down anchors, over 10" of ground clearance, etc. etc. and I picked it up for a lot less than either a Taco TRD Pro or loaded GMC Canyon. The Taco's seating position was a deal breaker. I couldn't adjust the seat enough for me to feel like I was driving a truck--it just left me feeling out of position and uncomfortable. The Frontier Pro-4X sits me upright and right in front of the steering wheel--360 degree visibility was by far the best in the Frontier compared to the Taco and Colorado. I did feel that the Colorado was a more comfortable fit for me than the Frontier, however.. I test drove the Taco TRD Pro (over 50K full retail), the Chevy Colorado loaded with leather, etc. I admit that the Chevy is the best, IMO, on road among the midsize trucks I test drove. But, it too was well over 43K. Even more with the Diesel. No thanks. Happy with the Frontier so far. Seems like an honest, simple yet capable truck.

Got my new 2018 frontier sv for 26 grand. That included a tire upgrade, folding bed cover, nerf bars, and roof rack install from the dealership. Upgraded the speakers myself after purchase. Now i have almost everything the pro4x has except leather lol. Toyota couldnt touch that for under 32 grand. I found the interior of the toyota to be my favorite by far, but the nissan seems to have so much more passenger room for some reason. In all honesty, i set out to buy a new taco, but on my friends advice i gave nissan a chance to earn my business and they did. Couldnt be happier with my frontier.

I think the style of the Frontier has stood the test of time. It still looks sharp to me. I have a 2005 model with 238,000 miles on it. The only real issues I've had so far are the classic transmission issue and crankshaft/camshaft sensors needing to be replaced. I also had to replace the driver's side window motor. No engine problems at all this far... knock on wood.

+Shawn Crowe.... I might just have to agree with you Shawn! I bought my 07 Frontier Nismo 9 years ago (new) after a lot of research, test driving, gabbing with mechanics and I'm still very content with the truck. It's had about 500 pounds of trades gear in the bed since new, so have used it for its intended purpose. I certainly don't baby it, but maintain it very well. I put real truck tires on it from the get go (Michelin AT's) and replaced the radiator at the 8 year mark before the extended warranty ran out. Apparently some of the earlier models had a problem with the coolant leaking into the transmission and causing havoc, but Nissan extended their warranty to cover any problems for a full 8 years. For me, it seemed like cheap insurance to replace the rad, so I did. Other than that, I like the 4 litre VQ motor (torquey) and the handling is very good for a truck. I could go on and on, but I won't Cheers!

I don't understand people. A good design looks good. It doesn't age. You guys look at a design say it looks great and then 5 years later change your mind? If GM sold a 1963 corvette with a modern drivetrain they couldn't make enough to keep up and the 2016 will always be more badass then a 1992 corvette. Good is good. Either say it looks good or bad. This "dated" in need of refresh...what is that?

I've got a 2017 Frontier Pro 4x and I LOVE IT. I did my research and I wanted something functional and reliable. I've been on trails where my side view mirror was taken off by a tree, or dented the skid plate, but it made it through. It's about 10k cheaper (in Canada at least) than a Tacoma and I don't care about modern styling of things, I want something simple and functional. If there was a "small" truck still existing I may have gone for that, but the Fronty is a wonderful, reliable, and functional truck. If it aint broke don't fix it. Nissan has been making trucks since the early 1900s.

Finally a midsize review that doesn't go... oooh shiny truck and give an automatic win to the canyon/colorado. I personally would take the frontier... its the most honest truck of the bunch... sure its not as plush as the new gm twins and it doesn't have the downsized engine of the tacoma... but its a truck that makes no apologies. The 4.0 is torquey and lively, and the chassis is beefy since it pretty much comes down the titan assembly line.

+Ultimatemxcn even though im a chevy fan i can agree. you can see Nissan intended for the truck to WORK. @meestabeckful
@meestabeckful 8 лет назад
+Ultimatemxcn I am in the market, and am one of the holdouts who only buys a manual. So my options for a 4x4 manual pickup in the US is a Dodge 2500 diesel, the tacoma, or the frontier. I went to my local auto show figuring that the tacoma would be a slam dunk. Then I sat in one. It was the TRD Pro Off Road Crew cab (the biggest cab). I am 5' 10", and the front seats were so low that my legs were almost flat, and my ass felt like it was sitting on the floorboards. My 7 year old sat in the bench behind me, and his knees touched the seat. WHAT!?? I jumped in the back next to him behind my wife in the shotgun seat (she is 5' 6") and not only were my knees firmly planted against the seat, but the bench was so low that only the last 3 inches of my butt were actually touching fabric, the rest of my body was levitating over the seat because of the angle of my legs (from the low seat height). I thought I was getting punked. A Hyundai Accent has more rear legroom than this thing had. Disgusted, I begrudgingly went over to the Nissan section and sat in a Frontier Pro-4x Crew Cab. Holy crap was I surprised. Super comfortable front seats that actually felt like truck seats, my legs were at a normal 45 degree angle to the pedals. I left the drivers seat in position for where I would keep it and jumped in the back seat. I had inches of room from my knees to the back of the drivers seat, and felt pretty comfortable (wouldn't want to sit back there for a 300 mile road trip, but for an hour it would be fine).. I don't care how 'new' the Frontier looks, it is built for actual human beings to sit in, and is thousands cheaper than the Tacoma. I needed 4x4 capability to reach the family cabin in the winter, towing capacity to pull a 4,500lb trailer, and the utility to haul firewood in the bed. That is why I am taking delivery of my Frontier next month (it's a real bitch to get a manual transmission anymore!). I never thought I would choose a Nissan over a Toyota, but there you have it. Capability doesn't mean a thing if you cant squeeze your ass into it.

+AdventuRide They can ask what they want... and GET it if the truck has good resale value(of which Toyota is unmatched with the Taco). To Chevy- this concept is unheard of. Maybe things will change, but it takes time. It is a shame that ALL vehicles MSRPs are thru the roof(means 6-7 yr finance terms) which means Toyota wins in my book with the Tacoma- still hate to pay 37K for a truck that I paid 31k for in 2013(although I did just WHOLESALE it to a dealer for $24K with 60K miles and never even had to replace the tires... 5 oil changes and wipers once)

Due to reliabilty issues,the best truck overall is the Nissan Frontier.Consumer Reports has given the newly designed Tacoma and the GM coma/canyon a much BELOW AVERAGE RELIABILTY rating. The Nissan Frontier is the only one out of the three that has a ABOVE TO MUCH ABOVE AVERAGE RATING on reliability.

Yep. Early on the pathfinder/frontier had the infamous ATI leak and ruined the Radiator/transmission. Also fuel sending sensor would go out requiring new fuel pump. And the timing chain would go out early. It took Nissan 5 years to clear all that shit up. But after that, forget about it. This truck rocks. I just bought a Pro 4X and agree with you, this old 15 year old mid sizer is TOP OF CLASS. LOL. But compared to my 05 this has a ton more luxury. Its all new to me. Pro 4 X is a sleeper of a truck.

@@HiPlains1 i changed the cam sensors on my 06 Nismo Frontier with 98,000 miles back in 2012 at the time and then the radiator after knowing about the cross contamination issues. But ever since then my truck had piled up 280,589 trouble free miles since then. This is the best truck I've ever owned.
@HiPlains1
@HiPlains1 5 лет назад
@@andresgarcia3516 Sounds like your are doing the transmission flush every 30K or so. From what I hear, if you keep on the maintenance these trucks will run a long time. It was a good design from the start. The 5 speed/VQ40 were never changed. Except the first few years of the pathfinder had a 270HP V6. Then they dropped it to 261. Not sure if the frontier had the more powerful tune. But if so your truck probably has the 270 HP version. In 2018 the frontier was rated the most reliable mid size truck one can buy. The Toyota Tundra is considered the most reliable full size. And both are old school tech. I think the problem with the newer trucks is the need to meet CAFE/MPG/EPA goals. The newer active learning transmissions are more complicated with awkward shift points. The Tacoma's 6 speed is reliable but frustrating to drive. GM's Colorado 8 speed has suffered for years with shuddering and torque convertor failures. The 10 speed on the Ranger seems to be ok. Ended up buying a pro 4X frontier because I just didn't want any problems. Still amazing this truck holds up so well. Better interior then both GM/Ford. I owned a Ranger overseas and the Frontier is more ergonomic and has a nicer layout. Very functional no nonsense truck. People always hate on the frontier for being dated but the VQ40 is such a wonderful motor. Lots of torque off the line. Never seems to lack power and the 5 speed is very smooth and shifts appropriately. This is a very similar setup to the Japanese built 4Runner with a old 5 speed and 4.0 liter. Also considered extremely reliable and great power-train.

Nice review, very positive throughout. I don't care which truck wins with the great breakdown you guys did. Makes choosing a truck very wide open to a buyers wants or needs. I think reliability should be added in somewhere within the percentages based on something, maybe consumer reports and weight it heavily. I really don't think fuel mileage carries a lot of weight in real world. I think it is more like talking about the weather, its just something we have to talk about but it really doesn't matter that much as we are only talking about the difference between the two. Now the diesel is a different animal when talking fuel mileage and you did say you were confused why it took so long to get here and you touched on the reasons why. The reason why diesel is becoming an option is because of café requirements. I agree the Tacoma engine is a poor upgrade. Ford is leading the way with the small eco boost motors. The 2.7eco boost gets 325HP and 375Lb-ft of torque which is a superior choice over the diesel option in the Colorado at 369 torque and 181HP for the following reasons. Combined epa is 20mpg in a heavier truck in the F150 with the eco boost, maybe 21 in a midsize vs 28 in your Colorado test truck. However, the eco boost is cheaper to buy and produce and I have seen from my calculations (do your own) but it can take 3-8 years to see a payback on the diesel option due to extra maintenance, initial cost and other diesel expenses, (timing chain at 240K needs to be replaced as well, how much is that?) so the only advantage is that you can go further on a tank between fuel stations but you will need to as diesel fuel is not an option at many service stations. Now look at the torque curve on both motors, the torque may be the same but the torque curve on the gas motor is superior throughout the rpm range with superior HP. So if you want to accelerate as slow as the diesel you can maintain that low rpm big torque grunt out of the hole while maintaining decent fuel epa in the gas motor. Ask for more and you will burn a lot more fuel because you can, which is an advantage, a very big advantage for acceleration and maintaining speed up big hills but you do lose the fuel for that, but that is not an option with the diesel, you just get a flat throttle with low hp. SO WHY OFFER A DIESEL. Well choice is always a good thing, however manufacturers will not build it for that reason. The reason is a gamble on their part in order to meet café requirements. You see this with Subaru where their café requirements are above 40mpg, GM at about 33. Obahma stated it needs to be at 54.5mpg by 2025. Subaru is being forced to drop their models because of this or switch to battery, pay the fines for gas or switch to diesel, which is an inferior option they don't want, but if they do it, they will put a positive spin on it to try to sell it, much like GM with the diesel option, even though in my educated opinion based on the above, is an inferior choice to the boosted gas motor. The boosted gas motor will also have a big advantage at higher altitudes or on low atmospheric pressure days over an naturally aspirated motor. The other big problem with diesel that you touched on is the exhaust restrictions. The pollution from diesel vehicles in the UK is a big problem right now. Unlike gas motors diesel emits a soot which goes in your lungs but never comes out. It attaches to your alveoli for life and the small chemical particulates in diesel are so small they penetrate your skin, heart, kidneys, lungs and brain. Many birth defects are being linked in the UK right now due to the diesel problem. The government has actually admitted guilt and are offering subsidies to people returning a diesel for a battery powered car right now. Regardless of mandated filters only 3 of 24 cars actually passed the mandated exhaust standards, largely in part in that garages offer modified filters that increase a diesels hp and torque and saves them fuel, so owners opt to buy the filter and the garages make a sale and we breath in the problem. Even with mandated filters the pollution is still a problem compared to gas emissions as the dangers are far greater with the soot and micro particulates that still get out and penetrate the body. Even VW tried to cheat the filters with computer programming and went a step further by altering the engine oil, spiked with diesel fuel to lower the carbon exhaust. Without these proper filters VW gets better numbers for HP and torque. When filtered properly and safely the diesel is less attractive and weak to a buyer. This will happen in North America due to café requirements and we too will suffer from this pollution should diesel take off. We are on the brink of seeing battery powered cars with instantaneous torque (no rpm required) so powerful that mining companies are using battery powered scoop trams and we are on the brink of using hydrogen powered cars that run on water and the exhaust is oxygen. One way to slow this inevitable progression is to take easy way out and switch to diesels due to lobbyist's from the fuel companies bribing our governments. Obahma stated that by 2025 manufacturers will have to comply with an epa of 54.5 mpg. Diesel is an inferior option but that is the easiest route for manufacturers to take right now but it is a sht storm for all of us if it comes to fruition just like what is happening in the UK right now. So before banking on diesel is safe published by bribes from the establishment, bank on proof that is so undeniable right now that the UK government admitted to wrong doing by offering subsidies years ago to buyers of diesels. The reason was to reduce the C02 footprint to stop global warming and even that is being proven wrong right now and they admit they should have gone to battery, hydrogen or stuck with the gas engine. Diesel works for commercial use outside the big cities but bringing diesel into fruition within the city in vast numbers will be a big mistake and the motors don't have any capital gain to them, suffer from low hp and have an inferior torque curve compared to a turbo gas motor. I noticed the 0-60 times are very slow. MT has the new Tacoma tagged at 7.1 seconds and the manual Tacoma has a better gear ratio and no lag so it does 0-60 in 6.8 seconds, both are faster than the V6 Colorado. I would rather have a V8 in the Tacoma or an eco boost. I hope Ford builds a mini Raptor and some day slams a 5.0 eco boost Coyote V8 in it.

+rocker85675 well I have any friends who own yotas from 2000 and up and not one of them have frame issues. I work at a place with a thousand employees that make high wages and nobody here is experiencing unusual frame issues on newer yotas and we are living in the worst area for salt in North America. I've owned yotas for 25 years and never had frame rust issues. take care of your truck, and you won't have unusual corrosion issues.
@tactikoolcloud8788
@tactikoolcloud8788 8 лет назад
rocker85675 the rusting frame issue was with the first gen Tacomas only. The frames where made by Dana instead of Toyota (4runners are made in Japan and had no issues with very similar frame) Dana cheaped out on the steel and coatings causing them to rust. Dana then had to pay Toyota 25 million in the end. They are obviously not using Dana any more for USA built trucks and have no rust issues unless you live in the rust belt where everything rusts away.

I just need it for hauling some stuff and the occasional tow, does fantastic. Don't need the extra cost in maintenance for a 4wd nor do I do off-roading. 2wd does fine in the snow if you know what your doing. A lot of these reviewers do the expensive trucks because the dealers get free advertisement and they want to push the higher end models.

The diesel only suits the manufacturers needs to meet café requirements. The manufacturer will not build what you want because of café requirements. The only way they can add more power is to do a special one off build or to add battery power into the mix with an eco boosted motor.

Honestly, these are terrible buys. I don't think they understand the bulk of the mid-size market. There is a market who wants a small off-road utilitarian vehicle. But thats not the main mid-size market. The main market are people who need a cheap truck that doesn't need to haul a lot. That's the main selling feature of the Tacoma, $16k MSRP. It was also the main feature of the 2nd gen Dakotas. The 3rd gens started at $25k MSRP. These trucks are just too expensive. They sell higher than full-sizes. They also get the same MPG as full sizes. This is why all mid-size truck sales combined in January was less than the Ram. Just take this Canyon and compare it to the Ram EcoDiesel. Same MSRP, Same MPG, but the Ram is heavier with a larger displacement engine. It also comes with many more features.
@thomaspaul2465

+Kevin Smith You cannot lease any other truck for the low payments that come with a Tacoma. Price a 4 door Tacoma off road (manual even cheaper) with a V6 and price any other similar equipped 4x4 4 door and you will pay 100 to 600 dollars more per month. The Tacoma is the cheapest lease option. The only one that comes close but is still higher is a Frontier. This is the true value for your money because the Tacoma gives back higher resale proven by their lease plans. With a lease you only pay for the depreciation. That is proof the Tacoma is cheaper than full size. And the Tacoma does this and is more capable than a Ford Raptor when off roading.

That diesel has lots more cost to it besides the initial retail. One of the biggest lies about diesel is that fuel economy saves you money. Fuel filters, exhaust oil, glow plugs, loss of use while those maintenance requirements are being done, diesel fuel that cost the same as premium gas, all lead to a higher cost of ownership. The Ike Gauntlet test has also proven it's not at all that much better of a towing vehicle then the others.

While the toyota is not a piece of shit, it is most certainly overpriced just like the GM. The best value is the frontier. No matter how you do the math you cannot escape the fact that the frontier is so much more attainable. I will admit it is a very old design but it works. I have owned a tacoma and I currently own a frontier CC long bed 4x4 SV. I also used to own a 2009 frontier cc pro4x. I like my frontier so much more than the tacoma just due to the fact that it had more power and offered so much more for the price. Offroad, I would have to say the tacoma was a bit better because of the stock ride height being higher than the frontier, but that is fixed by spending 1/4th of the price difference on a lift kit.

People, please for the love of god, stop making videos comparing Nissan Frontiers to trucks like the Tacoma. They aren't the same thing. The Tacoma doesn't have a fully boxed ladder frame. It doesn't have 4 wheel disc brakes. It has a plastic truck bed you cannot put anything into without voiding your warranty. It is nothing but a glorified grocery getter / bro-dozer. The ONLY advantage you have in a Tacoma over a Frontier is the fact that you can resell it for higher. That of course is offset by the fact that you quite clearly PAID more for it up front. The Frontier is the last true midsize truck made for truck owners. STILL the most rigid fully ladder boxed frame on the market of all midsizes. The best reliability (JD power most reliable truck for sale in the USA, both midsize AND full size for both 2016 and 2017, whereas the Tacoma is the highest failure rated truck in the USA and Toyota as a brand has the most recalls of any import there is.) You buy a Nissan Frontier to do work, because it is reliable, because engineering to you is more important than having an extra 16 USB charging ports added to the rear passenger doors. The ONLY downside I've found to my 2016 manual pro-4x so far is the fuel economy and the fact that they won't sell it with a moonroof/sunroof when you choose a manual transmission. The fuel economy I expect. It's a heavily built chassis and body that doesn't flex and the engine, while dated, was designed for high torque and longevity. So while the neighbor with the Taco is wondering why his truck shuts off on the highway due to electrical glitches or has his passenger side door fall off of the truck when it's less than 30 days old while at 60mph, both of which have happened to coworkers of mine in the past 3 years, you can rest assured that your Frontier will mechanically and structurally stand the test of time. Toyota just lost in 2017 the largest automotive class action lawsuit in US history when the USA proved that Toyota trucks and SUVs have significant rust damage coming off of the assembly line. Before they even hit the dealer lots as new vehicles they are rusting away underneath and that's what they're selling to customers. The USA wasn't having any of that and that settlement is over 5 billion $ now and counting. The government even forced Toyota to cease sales of the FJ Cruiser in this country because they WERE BREAKING IN HALF AT THE FRAME and Toyota could not rectify the issue. Go try and buy a 2018 FJ Cruiser, I dare you. Just sold my 22 year old Nissan frontier which was parked next to the ocean most of my naval career and the salt air did literally nothing to it body or frame. Please stop comparing the current Nissan Frontiers with some of these newer midsize trucks which are trying to drive more like cars than trucks and give you CAR interiors and such rather than TRUCK interiors. They are not the same thing.
@HiPlains1
@HiPlains1 5 лет назад
Mostly agree here but the FJ did not have the rust issues that the Taco did. From what I heard it was due to local suppliers in the US not applying the coating properly. The FJ was made in Japan. Mostly they killed it in the US because sales dropped to a mere 14K in 2014. I've not read anything that the Federal government to tell Toyota to stop selling the FJ. As for buying a 2018 FJ well they quit making them in 2014. Nothing wrong with the FJ's except they suck gas and have a small tank. You will be looking for gas after 250 miles. But prices on those are going up on autotrader. IMO, Toyota killed it too early. Its the type of truck the market is seeking out now. As for the Pro 4X I mostly agree. I just bought a 2019 with premium package. Its definitely old school. But its still the best value and probably the most reliable. I'm getting 18MPG city and over 20 Hwy as well. So IMO, the new active learning transmissions with higher failure rates is just not worth the couple extra MPG's you might get. The VQ40 is just such a great tune. Even with the 5 speed OD. This YT is one of the last to include the Frontier for comparison. Sadly, the Frontier gets little mention these days and most reviewers will just cast it off saying its old, outdated and needs a refresh bla bla bla. Meanwhile, sales of the Frontier are pretty strong: 2010 40,427 2011 51,700 2012 55,435 2013 62,837 2014 74,323 2015 62,817 2016 86,926 2017 74,360 2018 79,646 As you can see, 2018 had the second highest sales volume in the last 9 years. I'll be interested to see what the numbers will look like in the end of 2019. Not bad for a 14 year old design that Nissan does not advertise and most reviewers will just pass up completely these days. For those that do their homework they still see the Frontier as a very smart buy providing excellent value and in many cases a better truck. Longevity is a given at this point. The third gen taco/GM twins have struggled with issues (especially transmission). But the Frontier has the raw data of a decade of proven reliability. People just want something that won't give them problems. And with prices blowing past 40K on mid size trucks, this just makes allot of sense.

I really like the Tacoma, however I did not like the engine change even though it does have more power. I like to do my own oil change and on the new engine they moved the oil filter from the top to the bottom of the engine and the skid plate have to be removed to get to the filter also it is a paper filter that is removed from the filter housing. Very messy and time consuming doing a oil change. I understand that Toyota is very conservative company but with all the changes that they made I was hoping they would make a four wheel ABS disc brakes available even if it is a option package. It would be nice to the option to choose it. Overall I love the Tacoma. It is good to see GM finally improved the Colorado and the Canyon. They are on the right track. With continue improvement these trucks may take the lead. I feel that the Nissan Frontier needs to start to make the improvements now to keep up with there competitors. But it is a good truck, just need to keep up with the times

I'm not sure about the 2016 Tacoma, but the new TRD Pro 2017 has the skid-plate designed so that you can change the oil without removing the plate, and without dripping oil all over it when removing the filter. Seems that they might have designed these the same way.

Too bad you guys had the long bed of the canyon. It's too long with that config. and I think it hinders some of the off road worthiness. I'm having a blast in my CC SB 4x4 diesel 'rado so far. Definitely a bit different on the power delivery, but all in all very happy and easy to get used to. it feels like it can crawl up just about anything I need it to. Thanks for the honest review guys. I love a little competition in the market place.

Great job guys. For some reason I like the look of the Frontier the best but I'm sure it just has grown on me over the years. Personally for what I need a truck for the Colorado or Canyon would be just fine for me but I am also waiting now for the new Honda Ridgline to compare with the Chevy/GMC. One thing I have noticed is nobody seems to want to review the Canyon or Colorado with the 4 cylinder and stick?? I would love to know what you guys think of the 4 cylinder Colorado and I believe one can also buy this truck with 4wd.

He said wasn't happy with just a 3mpg increase for the Tacoma. Then tried to compare it to the gmc diesel. Key word there being diesel. You can't call the mpg of the Tacoma bad (which it's not) then compare it to a diesel. The canyon diesel was made to get mpg's, not tow. It's a mid size.

+Jason Corbin And it is 181HP which is a joke. Throttle response is flatter than paper. Step on paper and push as hard as you want, its still flat (0-60 in 10 seconds) Watching paint dry would be way more exciting. And the diesel is easily modified which is a big problem in the UK right now with toxic emissions. Diesel is a soot that stays in your lungs and the chemicals are so small they penetrate every part of your body

I drove all of these trucks and ultimately bought a frontier crew cab with a long bed. the gm with diesel is not worth the money. you can't buy the truck without getting a 7k$ package. the diesel itself is 3800 but you have to buy the z71 or LT upgrade package. I hate to say it but the Toyota is a great looking gutless truck. even tho they claim it has 270 HP it drives more like 150. the power comes late in the rpm range and in WV it shifted up and down constantly to maintain speed up hills.

how? i drove all of them, weighed my options. did a cost /benefit and in the end the nissan came out on top. i much rather like the way the toyota looks, but it has very little usable power and torque for highway driving up these mountains. it is worse than the gas V6 of the colorado, which i passed on because it has already had some issues come up with carbon build up due to the direct injection. the colorado was my first choice for alot of reasons. 48 inch between the rear wheel wells means it can haul a full size atv easily. interior seems comfortable and plush yet tough enough to last. but... it is an untested platform. what issues are going to develop down the road? direct injection has its own set of problems inherent to the design. the turbo diesel is what i wanted, but the fact that gm will not sell the diesel in a work truck trim means its an extra 7k$ just to get the 3800$ motor. that just turns me off regardless of how much i like the truck. the nissan was my last choice. its an older dated design but what it has going for it is a very usable power/ torque curve and a reliable history of durability. nissan has been making that same truck for about 10 years now so it stands to reason that the bugs are worked out. history shows us over and over that the first couple years a vehicle model is built is when they have the most problems and recalls.

+Steve C I think the most recent Super Bowl era commercials portrayed it the best. The Colorado ad showed a metro sexual driving his cool truck around downtown Los Angeles while the Tacoma ad didn't even bother showing a driver, but instead had their trucks bouncing over dirt roads and (albeit a bit ridiculous) being jumped by motorcycles surrounded by fake explosions. I've also never met an actual Tacoma owner who gave two shits about the lack of power seats and the (apparent) low seating position. I personally love the high clearance and low center of gravity the latter affords my Tacoma as it makes it that much easier to hang my head out the window to determine whether or not that rock I'm driving over is going to plant itself in my door panel, which again doesn't seem like a subject someone attracted to the Government Motors twins would ever put themselves into the position to worry about in the first place.

I test drove the new duramax in the 2016 colorado and drove my friends up a logging road. The turbo lag really sucks, it's a lot more than what they stated in the video. If you let off the gas it's gonna take about 2.5-3 seconds for you to get the power back. It's got a weird power ban and delivery. If you want one to trick out and go off roading I'd invest in a better turbo.

DeftonesFan867 take a look at Autoguides ratings, these ratings are based on 2015 models and problems people have experienced with these vehicles, even if Toyota had kept the older model it would still be light years ahead of the new twins for reliability, you can also look at forums on the twins and see for yourself how bad the twins are, the twins were recalled before they even hit the showroom floors and GM had to stop production on them to take care of a few safety recalls, seats coming loose, brake calipers leaking ect...how about the old gen twins, how was their reliability compared to the Tacoma, well i guess we shouldn't go there LMAO

I have a 1999 Frontier , she had 330K mile and got the engine rebuild when it started to leak . now I hit the 336K mile ! and the transmission stopped shifting to 2nd gear ( it's an Automatic ) . this truck is so reliable ? its KA24D class 2.4 L engine can drive with no oil in it , because I did that when it was leaking and didn't know it was leaking oil for 3 days , I drove that damn thing 65 mile 2 way trip to/from work the is 195 total miles and when I went to gas it up ? I heard the knockers going , turned it of , opened the hood , checked oil ? lo and behold there was no oil at all . I called my cousin in Texas who was a pro salesman for American and Japanese cars and told him of what happened , he said : oh you can drive that fucking thing with no oil , because it is a feature of emergency ( the engine water cooling inline are extra large bore compare to any other 4 cylinder engine ever made in Automotive History ) , he added : but that doesn't mean you can drive it with no oil all the times . I just wanted to share this lucky wacky Iraqi story with you all . p.s: take care of your vehicle and she will take a good care of you in all trips .

why would I spend $43K for a truck I have to baby off-road, especially since you had to remove the air dam? Have a 2015 Nissan Frontier SV CCLB, only reason I took the air dam off was to add a second tow hook. A fully loaded Z71 Colorado with diesel is $47K, something not included in your review, GM dealers won't budge on the price, was told by two "take it or leave it", I left it and bought the Nissan, with $10K left in my wallet. Is the Nissan dated, yes. Although, I use mine for driving Uber/Lyft, and routinely get compliments on how it looks, even from Toyota and Chevy owners. You also forget to mention that the Canyon/Colorado has the smallest interior of the 3, as well as the smallest overall truck, not sure where you get the "feels like a full-size", I've been in 3 of them. I'm 5'11", put the seat where it was comfortable for me, absolutely no way I could sit in the back seat behind the drivers seat for any length of time, almost ate my knees. My wife is 5'2", she fit, but said it felt cramped as well. Biggest drawback to the Nissan is the MPG.
