After six months of being our video team’s runaround van, our Renault Trafic has made its way back to the French brand’s headquarters.
Over its stint with the team the Renault Trafic was used as a support vehicle on shoots, a daily commuter, an object mover, and all the other things you’d expect of a van.
As such, it became part of the furniture at our Sydney office, and the production team is the first to admit that they’d become quite attached to the van.
The entire team - Mitch, Christian, Glen, Brett and Sam - spent time in it, and each had some interesting insights into living with the Trafic.

I bought a brand new one at the start of 2019. In a year and a half I've called road side assist 4 times due to electrical issues. The 30k service intervals are bullshit, too. As the engine light pops up around 15k after changing the oil. They're a great van when they're running, but I wouldn't buy one without a warrenty. I'll be trading mine in as soon as the warrenty expires.

I’ve had a Renault Trafic from new for just under 3 years. 50,000km on the odometer. It’s so unreliable. The harmonic balance was the first major thing that needed replacing. They didn’t have any in Australia so they had to remove one from a new Trafic and fit it into mine. Then just recently it needed a new turbo. Also none in Australia so my van sat in the workshop for about 4 weeks while the ordered one from France. Also the brake pads supplied with the van aren’t designed for Australia and wear out super quick. All in all the Trafic is a piece of crap.
@crpth1
@crpth1 3 года назад
Definitely something is not right. 50.000km is, for all effects, a new van! I've seen enough of these van passing the 500.000km. Mine has 300k the engine is pure clockwork. None of the mentioned "stuff" should have gone wrong. So either you're truly unlucky or you've been in the hands of very dubious mechanics... Example: Do you realize if you start many "new engines", the Renault Trafic engines included. Without the belt in place. Your harmonic balancer is toast... Yep! Rather easy and simple for "less trained" mechanics to make such basic mistake. As a consequence, I can assure you, they dump the invoice on the clients lap! Parts defects aside, a turbo goes "south" only with very bad use and or very bad... OIL! Do you know exactly what oil as been used on your van? These engine need/demand pretty expensive fully synthetic, long life, low ash, etc. oil. There's absolutely no excuse or "work around" this detail. Every decent mechanic knows that. But when cutting corners... Your old and cheap 30w oil will not work at all. And FYI the turbo tends to be the weak link in the oil chain. Does any of these ring any bells?! ;-) I won't even comment that brake pads not designed for Australia. That is really BS! LOL 😂

what they forgot, the 1.6 is just too weak when it's loaded. YOu feel that it misses displacement
@crpth1
@crpth1 3 года назад
The issue is not the 1.6 is "too weak". Torque and power numbers state it very clearly. The point, is that the programing was set for to high rpm's. Which in all honesty doesn't make any sense at all on a cargo vehicle! Same problem in the rather "pointy" FIAT 1.3 MultiJet diesel engines. Also commonly found on the Opel/Vauxhall. I solved it with a tune of the ECU program. The result was simply awesome, a usable vehicle! All these anti-pollution policies, lead to very awkward "design" options when it comes to modern engines. This is just another strange example. Diesel's are really the target of the moment! ;-)

@@crpth1 well then why do the 2.0 and 1.6 feel so different if the power figures are almost identical. Power figures are not everything

Surprised at the lack of grab handle, my 2007 one has one!
@crpth1
@crpth1 3 года назад
The grab handle is an accessory that's vanishing quickly! Also very market dependent... The reason is quite simple. SAFETY! In a crash it's one less obstacle to hit! ;-) Those "safety stars" changed a lot of vehicle design in the past decades. BTW My 2007 2.0 DCI, in spite, being rather well equipped for a cheap model. Don't have grab handles anywhere to be seen!

... it's hard as hell, literally.
@crpth1
@crpth1 3 года назад
@@FromTheBiggining - Tip: A hard clutch is a good indicator that maintenance is due! A new clutch assembly should be, in fact is, rather light and easy to use. The extra effort is telling you that release bearing, plate, slave cylinder, etc. At minimum need some cleaning! This is valid for ANY vehicle or brand. ;-)

We have 200,000 km on the clock , still tight , fit for purpose, good storage, handles heavy loads , drives well , and quite peppy for 1.6cc . Cons crap reverse camera , cup holders , soft ware updates and requests for passwords disabling media, gps and reverse cameras,etc little things , the biggest con is dealing with Renault, we are looking to purchase 3 more vans and were keen to purchase 3 new Renault vans ;however, dealing with Renault has put a sour taste in our mouths.

rob kerk why can't you out a car seat in them ?
@crpth1
@crpth1 3 года назад
Cameron Alexander - The point is that the 30k is a real thing. BUT be aware it's the maximum advisable under "ideal" conditions. The stop and go, urban users in general should consider it's use has a harsh environment. The user manual is quite clear about it. Also very important. DO NOT skimp on the oil type and quality!! It's surely not the cheapest. Being fully synthetic, long life, low ash, etc. Makes it expensive. But it's the only way to get the 30K, without issues. I've seen enough cheap users, saving on oil. To pay later the, multiplication factor, at the workshop... ;-)

Don’t buy one! Unless u want to get to know your local mechanic really well. Because the “factory trained”mechanics have no idea. They don’t get you a hire car when it breaks down too. Renault shouldn’t be aloud to sell cars in Australia. Spent more money and time on trying to fix this thing “under warranty”

@crpth1
@crpth1 5 лет назад
RemusKingOfRome5 - You need to learn how to design a camper or at least check/look the pro built ones. Trowing vague opinions, based on air and wind. Well... ;-) One of my most practical camper van builds, I DIY, was on a L2H1, Hyundai H1 2000. By dimensions and shape one of the least used or considered candidates. With literally (0) zero aftermarket parts available. The only really negative issue in the end product was the close ratio differential. That limited top speed to 138 km/h, on a good day, quite short on European highways. On the other hand add load capacity to spare. ;-) Opposite to the much more "famous" VW Transporter in it´s "California" iteration. Or the even better Mercedes Vito in it´s "Marco Polo" clothes. Or Ford Transit, or Citroen Jumpy, etc... There´s in fact quite a large number of candidates for someone who knows what to look for. ;-) Cheers
