2016 smart fortwo Review and Road Test - In 4K! 

Man, great review! I wish more car reviewers would draw as many comparisons as you do because it really puts things into perspective when you don't know a great deal about car stats.

Alex, your linguistic skill leaves me awestruck. I love listening to you and consistently find myself thinking that it's actually possible for someone to talk that fast and that intelligent without making mistakes.

Possibly the best review of this car that I've seen. Very detailed and logical.

Just got mine today and I already love it more than my civic I used to have!!

I LOVE MINE! I have a 5 speed, which is much better performing, and with some skill I can get better gas mileage than stated. It is a lot of fun to drive, the most fun of any car I have ever owned or driven. I love blowing away Dudes in their fancy pickup trucks...they never have a chance.

As with my current Smart car which is a 2013 I have not just for fuel economy but I got it for its unique look and artsy appeal. If something happened to my Smart I'd opt for this updated one in a second. I drove one in a huge test and it was a huge improvement big time. Shifts better and is much more quirky than its older one. If the Pure ever makes it here I'd get one.

Another great review Alex. You know, it occurred to me why your reviews stand out. Detail! So much information, information that any serious prospective buyer would want to know. The same cannot always be said of some other reviews done by large firms that pride themselves as consumer advocates. Their reviews too often border on some sensational aspect that seems aimed at little more than to draw attention to themselves. I can't remember when you've actually put down a car totally for some aspect that may very well not be an issue with others. Thanks for your honest and detailed reviews.

I'm sorry, but we have about six or seven here in the rural area I reside. Most people would drive vehicles are DRIVER ONLY, and that is WHY more should consider a smart car. Plus it is one of THE safest vehicles here in the US today. It is practical in both RURAL AND URBAN AREAS. Plus, think of all of the attraction the vehicle Gets wherever you go??!!

One of the biggest plusses of getting a smart fortwo compared to any other car on the road, and yet is NEVER mentioned, is the amount of room you have left over in a one or two car garage, if you’re someone, like me who likes to park inside. It only takes up about 45 square feet of space, and so leaves a ton of room for cabinets, bikes, motorcycles, workout equipment, tennis rebounder, work bench, etc., etc. No other car that I know of will leave so much useful space in a garage!

When I customized a Smart Fortwo "Passion" trim on the smart USA website there was no available option for power mirrors, but I could see you tester was equipped with power mirrors. I wonder why?

They’re great little cars. I love them.

I have 2017 auto petrol version in same shade of orange but with orange on tridion cell so all the same colour with black alloys /sports option. Looks great 7 years on and I have to admit I hardly ever wash it but you seriously wouldn’t know it’s not a grime magnet like some metal cars. I drive it to work every working day and take it for spin on weekends.

The difference between the Nissan Versa and Ford Fiesta getting a little better fuel mileage than the Smart, is that people don't like driving them. The Smart drives really good.I have no idea how you can talk so fast and not make one mistake. I am completely amazed by your linguistic skill.

Great little car but considering the trim and equipment level it seems very expensive. Overall, a very good job.

Have you had a chance to drive one closer to 2017? What is your opinion of the build quality? Do you feel safe sharing the road with much larger cars? Any opinion on the electric Smart, price and driveability?

Too bad they didn't keep the manual steering option, this is still light enough not to need PS.

How would you compare this with the fiesta 1.0l ecoboost. That seems like it would be a good comparison. Both get similar fuel economy although the focus does better on the Highway. Both also make use of 3 cylinder turbocharged engines.

Many do not realize that smaller engine does not equal better MPG. Smaller engine cars need to work harder in order to accelerate. Ideal engine for fuel economy is around 2.4 (as an Accord for example). If you drive Smart hard fuel economy will be unbelievably low. If you want better fuel economy change your driving style.

I can see the aftermarket will be quick to offer a Mercedes emblem for the grill.

With the primary purpose of the car being city driving I'd like have seen them put lower first, second, and third gears in the car to help it accelerate at lower speeds. Leave 4,5, and 6 for open road fuel economy.

In the topic of two passenger vehicles, the final production prototype of the Elio is supposed to be unveiled at the LA Auto Show. I imagine you'll be going to the show and if so, It would be great if you could do a short video on your initial thoughts. Its 7K price tag and the mindset behind it being an addition car instead of a replacement (hence the price) has me very interested.

You told us you had driven the old generation in Europe with a stick-shift, the first gen never came with that. So how you managed to get your hands on one is far beyond my knowledge.

tbh my dad's 2016 Hyundai accent is also an unpleasant ruff ride over bumps, holes, rocks, etc. as well.

It looks like a small cargo capacity, but I think I would be able to get a reasonably good two man tent, sleeping bags, bedding and beds, cooking equipment, gas bottle, lanterns, into the car, plus a passenger. You would not see out the back, but no bother. This is good if you like camping like myself.

My gorgeous and luxurious Cadillac ELR gets 32 miles to the gallon when it is running on gas, the first 35 miles are on electricity. It's 32 miles to the gallon is almost as good as this Humboldt little car.

36 MPG... Subaru Impreza 2012 and up get that, + 5 people fit, and its a hatch, racks , AWD... Maybe an Electric Smart will have more to offer..

The problem with this vehicle is that the mileage that it gets his relatively poor considering its diminutive size.

he says his gets 36MPG but I have the same model and year that gets anywhere from 40-45 and the highest i've seen mine get was 55MPG.

The severely limited headroom killed iQ for me. But I much preferred its packaging to the old Smart. Too bad it was impossible for me to use it.

I just purchased a 2008 passion that has every option of that year. The most ignored part of these reviews is the Tridion Safety Cell design of the car. No other subcompact can come close to the protection this car provides for its driver. I have no complaint about the transmission. I have a CDL and have driven every manual non synchro transmission that was ever put in a class 8 truck. Many employers trying to hire cdl drivers complain that a majority of " drivers" can only drive automatics. These people are "steering wheel holders" not true truck drivers. I think the single clutch 5 spd automatic the the older Smart cars are actually fun to drive. My car has paddle shifters and it makes the car interesting and fun to drive. Sorry Smart that you had to dumb down the car to sell to snowflakes.

Counter-intuitive as it may seem, I'm pretty sure the crappy drag-coefficient that's causing the unimpressive mpg numbers, is probably more due to the bluntness of the back, rather than the front. And take away the two tone, and this looks almost identical to the late Scion IQ.

Smart fortwo all over simple the best city car

For the size of that car, the mpg still sucks. Even with the updates it still has no appeal to the mpg freaks.

Not a very good value proposition, I am afraid. It might make sense in countries where you can park perpendicular to the curb (and you live in a congested city), but in the US it will be a very difficult sell, particularly with this mediocre fuel efficiency.

You didn't mention it takes premium gas. So you are going to be paying ~50 cents more per gallon filling it up than most competitors. This makes the 35MPG even worse in my eyes. I don't see how anyone can justify a smart over something like a Fiesta or most people. And if you live and drive in a city 100% of the time I would go with an electric car over a Smart.

Hey Alex! I can't say enough about your VIDEOS! When it comes to the SMART fortwo I get it but I can't get over paying top dollar for GAS! At 91 octane. They couldn't come up with a SCION IQ type of Motor? I know it's Mercedes. But serious.

I agree with the other youtubers, . it's only 36mpg. (and requires premium gas) . only 2 passengers . A higher price tag compared to other vehicles Nah! I'll pass.

A very good, thorough review. The car, although improved, is a poor choice, unless you need something that short and a tight turning radius. Not great mpg, and I believe they still burn premium, which is ridiculous. I would take a Miata, Mazda2 or Honda Fit over this this. Although the electric Smart interests me, as you can buy lease returns dirt cheap right now.

+Alex on Autos What is the manual transmission like? Is there any word on crash test results (I am mostly thinking of the IIHS Small-Overlap Front Test)? I find this oddly appealing as a successor to the (real) VW Beetle, and my other primary candidates are the Honda Fit, the Scion iA, and the Kia Rio. The prospect of driving such small cars on the interstate concerns me, however: how dangerous is it to be so small with trucks around?

I walked into my local MB dealer (I live in Toronto, Canada) and with the premium package (which most cars on the lot has), with some options & taxes, it comes to a eyewatering MSRP of ~$23,000. Or about the same money for a Cruze 1.4T or Mazda 3 2.0 GS. It does feel a good deal more premium then the mass market car, but the fact it shares the same showroom as those high price-tag Mercedes sitting besides it shows. P.S. I'm rather surprised at how good you said the dual-clutch unit is. I've driven an Audi S3 and Ford Focus with the Powershift and I can easily state the Mercedes 7G-DCT used in the CLA/GLA is the WORSE one by far. Perhaps MB fixed it on the Smart? If so I hope the software moves over to the CLA/GLA gearboxes.

36 miles per gallon? Try a diesel version or a VW TDi. Not worth it unless you want to make a statement driving a shoe.

That a three cylinder car, as small the new Smart, get's less than 50 mpg is a disgrace. The ForTwo really doesn't make any sense what so ever. It's not like they're less expensive than larger vehicles, that are just as easy to park in urban environments, that provide far superior fuel mileage. Sad.
