00:08 Doesn't speech also create chaos out of order? 06:07 How can I embed altruism more in my natural state of being? 15:10 Could you trace an narrative origin for postmodernism? 16:48 Is the nature of totalitarianism nowadays more feminine than masculine? / Lessons in parenting 23:51 Can we revive the state of Western civilization using the Nietzschean idea that God is dead? 26:29 Doesn't there need to be a higher creator to order the chaos of the world? 27:38 What's your opinion on cultural appropriation? / Excursion to pornography use 32:35 What's your opinion on the Alt-Right and nationalism? 35:09 Is it possible that things like cultural appropriation are actually tactical constructs by Postmodernist/Marxist thinktanks? 37:54 I know you from 4chan and everybody loves you. What are you? 40:10 Do you think that individuals today should have a renewed relationship with religion and God? 46:00 Could you elaborate on intelligence and its role in university selection? 49:20 Why do you think Western culture is committing suicide? [51:00 Question about government mandated language, French in Canada, no English in Quebec] 51:40 What's your opionion on safe spaces and the concept of white privilege? / Supportive letters from transgender people 57:37 Is there anything to ground our confidence in the Logos?

I love Dr. Peterson. When I listen to him I think of my days back at Hillsdale College and my classes with Dr. Gerhart Niemeyer and know that Dr. Niemeyer would greatly admire Dr. Peterson...and he would also greatly appreciate the work Dr. Peterson is doing in fighting the good fight.

This hits home. Being raised by a (over?) caring mom I always assumed the way to go was picking up other people's work, even if they don't ask for it, solve other people's problems, etc. Always assumed this was how to be a loving, kind person. That bubble just popped. It mostly makes people dependent and is hardly the caring thing to do in the long run... Damn, time to do some psychological digging. Funny how the rising awareness of this over-caring is synonymous to my political changes as well

Right, only 14% of the primary school teachers, who practically raise kids in the Netherlands from ages four to twelve, are male. Combine that with typically less available dads and you've got yourself a pretty big masculinity crisis

Born into a hypocritical and corrupt society I denounced the falsehood of the church at a very young age. Subscribed to the wonders of technology and the knowledge of the natural world. As an adolescence I began to be interested in politics but my spirit was demolished by the corrupt politicians and their tactics. A nihilistic, proud and self centered attitude poisoned my mind. Several other catastrophes occurred as I matured and the hole underneath my feet deepened unexpectedly for nearly a decade. The revelations in your lectures and your words speak to me deeply of meaning that transcends myself. In this deceitful society I inhabit I will surrender myself to my most honest self and trust that my character develops into something I can be proud to embody. Hopefully I have not only sucked this lessons like a sponge to be released when i pressure myself into believing i can be a better me without the work required. Part of me wants to be acknowledged by the person i admire so much, and so i doubt my own motives. Perhaps I see in you the father figure I always wanted to have, much of what you talk about reminds me of my own experience, most often when discussing the role parents play in the developing of their offspring. I am torn with thoughts that question my own validity, intelligence and worth. I am now confused by the magnitude of things i would like you to know and comment on, but mostly I would like to tell them to myself. Depression starts to set in as my mind gives up on this impossible riddle. I want to think there's a pathway forward. But the fear makes me believe that if I am not 100% correct, ready, prepared, I will fail. It makes me think of what you've said, putting the fears behind you so they help you escape that which is trying to eat you, paraphrasing of course. Your "Self Authoring" program has been on my mind for months now, I understand that if I carry it out my ideas and my plan for the future will become more clear as well as the idea of myself. I tell that myself often. Haven't been able to face it so far. It might be the fear of a fixed plan, It might be the voice of my mother telling me how worthless I am to her and how much gratitude and respect I owe her and my father for their hard work. I want to stop hearing that voice in my head. I want to know myself, I want to not fear the gaze of people, and I want to acknowledge my own worth. You've helped me, Jordan, I'd like you to know that.

Rubén R R I felt like I was reading my own thoughts there. I'm going to do the self authoring program as well, and there's the worry and fear of oh will it work, I might mess it up, maybe it won't do anything... I did a personality test, can't remember what its called, but I'm a Logician. And Logicians come up with many ways of how to do something, to try and figure the best way to solve a problem. But a con of Logician is that they can get bogged down in wanting the solution to be absolutely perfect, that sometimes they don't even start on any projects and so they don't get any where. And a solution which is what Peterson said here, is to just start fixing problems in your immediate area. Clean your room. Get the grocerys. Fix that squeaky door. And sort yourself out. Do the program. You're afraid of what you don't know about yourself. You're afraid of coming in contact with your dark shadow. Speak truth, your truth, and it will set you free.

I'm mystified that Dr. Peterson doesn't have more female viewers, though I'm always honored to be in the company of strong, intelligent, and moral men. I was convinced until very recently that our civilization had no chance of renewing itself given the almost total break with our traditions. As I was raised as an atheist, I think there is no way back to a literal belief in God for me. However, I was given a traditional humanities-based education and I've always felt a strong connection to our history and to Christianity, sensing somehow it's centrality, despite the fact I was not raised in a church. Dr. Peterson has shown me another way to honor our traditions, one that goes beyond the shallow New-Atheist view that all things worth preserving in our civilization began with the Enlightenment. I will never be able to thank him enough for the gift he has given in reconnecting me to the deep and intricate tapestry that is Western Civilization. And I believe more and more that his view has the power to pull us back from the brink of civilizational suicide. If enough of us take it to heart and pass it on to our children and to whomever will listen, I think that we can rebuild this crumbling edifice.

0:10 You've said that speech brings order out of chaos, but it would appear that speech brings chaos out of order as well. 5:08 Marriage - purpose and importance 6:09 How do I overcome proclivity to remain in comfort and act out of altruism? 9:08 Jung and Piaget on higher morality 15:10 Is it possible to trace archetypal origin of postmodernism which denies structure of language and its correspondence to reality, deny the sanctity of the individual? 16:52 Totalitarianism in the past has been associated with the masculine, while modern totalitarianism seems to be associated with the feminine. What is the nature of its power over men, that it seems to be able to silence us? 20:29 On raising and disciplining children 23:51 Can we revive the state of Western civilization using the Nitzchean idea that God is dead? 26:29 You mentioned that we need to order of chaos, but how can we, each being flawed, even working together create meaning or something good? 27:38 What is your opinion on the alt-right? On cultural appropriation? 29:53 A billion wicked thoughts, ideal men, according to women. 33:18 On the Alt-right 35:45 Comment on conspiratorial elements in political movements (e.g. Frankfurt school, modern think-tanks) 38:53 What are you? 40:12 Do you think individuals today should have renewed relationship with religion and God to rebuild moral authority? 46:00 Comment on role of IQ in selection in university 47:40 SAT is (pretty much) an IQ test 49:20 Why is western culture committing suicide? 51:44 Comment on the social construct of safe space and concept of white privilege? 52:57 Kulaks in SSSR 56:18 University is not a safe space 57:37 Humanity seeks certainty. How can we have confidence in goodness of Logos?

This man has such compassion for people, for helping people, helping them to understand themselves such that they can make themselves better. He does the same for his college students. It's no wonder people are raising him up. He's telling us things we should have but did not get when we were younger. When you hear it, it makes such sense, like you already know it but couldn't see it. It's so refreshing and inspiring. I am grateful for it.

"The answer that came to me again and again was play. Every human society in recorded history has games. We don't just solve problems out of necessity. We do it for fun. Even as adults. Leave a human being alone with a knotted rope and they will unravel it. Leave a human being alone with blocks and they will build something. Games are part of what makes us human. We see the world as a mystery, a puzzle, because we've always been a species of problem-solvers."

I always thought i was an evil mother for never allowing my kids to sleep in our bed, everyone else lets them. I also taught them to take care of themselves, to fold their own clothes, do the dishes and save their own money for passing trends like fidget spinners and squishies. It is very common in my social circles for mothers to pamper their children, i think is a general problem here in Scandinavia. Anyways Thanks for putting my mind at ease, my children are doing extraordinary well so i know i am doing something right:)

5:08 - 5:44 "It's the spiritual purpose of a marriage fundamentally, (right?) because you faced someone who is different than you that you are tied to, and cannot run from, and so you can reveal yourself (really-really); it's a critical part of marriage, because, if you can run from someone, they will never show you their true face, because of someone shows you their true face you will run. And so you say in a marriage to somebody: I will allow you to show me your true face and I will not run. And unless you mean that, you will never be married, you will never understand what it means."

My big takeaway: “Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime.” This works with any kind of problem. Solving the problem for a person is almost never as good as letting or helping them figure out the solution for themselves. It’s their life and it’s selfish to just coddle them and not let them be challenged. This is well-borne out in identity politics and PC culture, but applies to many other situations and I want to spend today making sure I notice how this applies to my everyday occurrences. Thanks Jordan

I've heard him say that we find comedians funny because they speak the truth and are able to say the things everyone is thinking. People will often laugh when he delivers a powerful truth. He might take something we knew in an abstract way and put it into words. Perhaps there's a sort of parallel here? Would that make him a meta-comedian? I don't know.

You can integrate comfortable activity with uncomfortable activity, for example many people listen to music while working out. Music releases endorphins which numbs pain in muscles making exercise easier. Athletes drink alcohol while training, it happen that alcohol is anesthetic. It numbs pain in muscles making excercise easier.

Dr Peterson is utterly energising and inspiring. Why are only 9% of his viewers female? At least one reason has to be because women are more likely to be SJWs, and Dr Peterson hints at some of the personality differences which would make this so. I am becoming uneasy about the feminocracy increasingly dominating public life in politics, the judiciary, academia, journalism... some women in these positions is a good thing, but once we get above a certain percentage (which is a lot less than 50%), we're in trouble for all sorts of reasons.

Someone please ask Jordan about Hellraiser. Has to be a favorite movie of his too; death angels that demonstrate enlightenment through brutality. That's also revealed in productive war, on the hunt, boot camp, in the gym, building anything, etc. That's the argument and the conversation: smash words and ideas at the highest velocity.

Nice that you mentioned the Nazis. And in My oppinion, we learn way too little about them, especially the Rise aka the "Weimarer Republik". That's one of the most important things in modern history because we should have learned soo much of it - and we didn't. We still do the same shit that happens then. We haven't lerned that much about our past...

Jordan, thank you for terrifying me to the core every day. I'm stronger with each and every lecture I see. I don't mean that in a cultish way. I truly am. You've put into words the things I've felt for years, specially with regards to ideological possession. I'm currently reading Maps of Meaning and I'm enjoying it a lot. Now, if you do see this, what can we do or how do we solve the death of God? I have a very, very bleak view of the future thanks to finally understanding what it entails, and it's terrifying. Sure, anything you can imagine will probably not happen, but hell I can't imagine any good things either. I don't think the worst is over with the twentieth century. Sure, not that many genocides going on, but formal marxism is far from over and totalitarianism is way far from over. While the past century was the century of Orwell, I think this century is clearly the century of Huxley. I believe it's obvious what soma is. So... how do we solve the death of God? Is any answer possible besides nihilism or the oedipical power figure? I don't think the religious traditions are renewing any time soon.
@shanekennedy5420
@shanekennedy5420 7 лет назад
Tim, the Enchanter Peterson is literally exposing how to reconcile science with religion, or the objective with the subjective. We just need to implement it in our loves. IMO, start with listening and reflecting on his many talks and maybe if you want to spread it faster and absorb it more quickly then talk with your family and friends. Is there a more specific angle you were thinking of?
@TimtheEnchanterOfYoutube
@TimtheEnchanterOfYoutube 7 лет назад
What I meant by this is not how do we personally solve it. Nietzsche himself gave some good guidelines for this. Become your own god. I meant how do we as a society solve this, is there any way this could be reverted? Are we basically doomed to repeat totalitarian practices over and over again? (Replacing god for the state, or replacing the devil with patriarchy, etc)
@shanekennedy5420
@shanekennedy5420 7 лет назад
You really think the answer might be that we become our own God? I can see how it might make sense but it feels wrong. Can you elaborate?
@meerkat1954
@meerkat1954 7 лет назад
Yeah, becoming your own god in our minds is extraordinarily dangerous... in some ways that is what the world has been racing to do for 400 years now and it is has brought us nothing but misery. To paraphrase The Incredibles, When everyone is God, nobody is. That kind of thinking will only end in environmental collapse (because we think we can micromanage the planet) or nuclear war (because as the Greeks wrote, when Gods have human emotions, they fight endlessly). We need humility, morality and eco-centrism to avoid destruction. Not hubris, egocentrism, anthropocentrism and a theological ideology of personal supremacy. We need the one true God back. And he sure as hell ain't us.

TheOlzee I agree with the path you are describing. I ESPECIALLY agree that today's world through so much confusion and irrelevance at you that is really makes the search for truth so much harder than it needs to be. This is just a reply that pretty much repeats what you wrote and later today perhaps I can actually put forward an idea past where you left it and return to this concept of being your own God. By way of agreeing with you, I just want to vent to related ideas - but I know you know these so feel free to skip to the next paragraph. One, if people who more systematic thinkers, I could have saved a lot of flailing around in my 20s through some shepherding and orienting earlier in life. Yes, I learned a shit ton and maybe I could be better for it in the end, but on the flip side I could already be so much further along reading, living the most valuable things. It's a toss up. Instead, like you describe, you listen, reflect, write, meditate, grow and become powerful. Two, it just bugs me that this listen, learn, write, meditate, grow process we are talking about is so dis-respect by how atheist fundamentalists look at the quality or thoughts of the people of the past (disclaimer, when I describe how you this is the case, one can figure out which type of atheist I am talking about, its not all, and no this is not a criticism of people not believing in God) Too many "rational people" refers to past thinks as peasants or ignorant, just a basic contemptuous and superior attitude towards our ancestors en masse, the father Peterson wants to rescue per say. I think you get this idea Olzee, but all they had to do was engage in that process, no other distractions to dealing directly with, lets say, the process of meaning. even without formal science, it's no wonder they were able to make such great insights. They had all the time in the world and they spent it talking to other people. There were few individual ways to really enjoy yourself per say. Maybe I wanted to write this to try and figure out a better way to put this, but I will say this they seemed to settle on God as something we were a smaller part of and where reaching towards. I do see this super, most, enlightened person being closer to God (because his won philosophy may or may not be on the cutting efforts of thoughts and practices that would bring one there) and and maybe its just semantics, but I still struggle to see how this allows one to become a God. I think maybe because I have not read the mythology, archetype literature yet? I don't know. ,

I think I can give you something to chew on as to why most of your audience are men. I think male role model of the father and teacher has been left behind in the western world. So I think there's any guys who like me, didn't grow up with a strong father figure to teach us how to be emotionally resilient and to push us out of our comfort zones. I listen to you and many other men who are intelligent, successful, good father's, responsible and someone who tells us the hard truth that we need to hear, instead of being a helicopter parent who shelters us. So basically we're looking for strong father role models.

you'd be surprised(or not) how 'men' are scared of being a Man or what even a man should be....i try every day and coming to Jordans lectures and words in general have helped so much! men,,loosely put,, are so full of Ego....we are Human Beings and male or female we stand for that with morals ethics responsibility etc is a fair start rather than following the 'men' image put out where most of them are full of flaws hidden by the Ego/Public image(speaking for those who we see)

I think them just asking questions one to the other wouldn´t make that much sense... It would be like having a personal conversation in front of the crowd... What I meant was more something like your other suggestion. Like when he said that his wife should answer "What are you/Who are you?" question... Maybe live Q&A would be good for something like that... A more casual approach... Something like that if enough people were interested, ofc....
