I recently spoke at Harvard University, in interview format, on the topic: Mask of Compassion: Post-Modernism & Neo-Marxism. This is a five minute clip from that talk (available in full at bit.ly/2qKZTwS) on the true purpose of university education.
Educate yourself. Become articulate -- able to think, form arguments, act and lead. Transcend your ignorance and victimhood. Reduce the suffering in the world. Lead a heroic life.
That's the purpose of any university education worthy of the term.

"You're on a heroic mission" If you're a student and you watched this video you need to remember this. Your heroic mission is the long march back through our institutions so that you will be the person who teaches people to be great, unlike the current crop of professors teaching them to be weak.
@TheGabe92
@TheGabe92 7 лет назад
It's really ironic that the original nihilist's critique of Christianity was that it supposedly taught weakness. Go forward 100 years and postmodernism has found a way to preach weakness on a whole new level. I am enrolled in engineering and we are pretty lucky in that most of our professors teach concrete skills and discipline, but engineers can't fix the humanities - so go forward, upstanding humanities students and academics, let us know when you need help!

The Family Virtue Signal This could be the answer to the capture of the academy by virtue signalling cultural Marxists. Set up a crowd funded institution of the world wide Web, a kind of Aristotelian Lyceum, where real knowledge is encouraged. It would be greatly helped if thinkers like Jordan Petersson or Roger Scruton in Britain,plus the legions of non-academic lovers of wisdom to be found on the Web, were co- opted for this endeavour. Eric Bliar.

As it turns out, the post-modernists are not taking over academia in order to change the cultural ideas that it transmits, but to destroy the mechanism of cultural transmission itself. Post-modernists are there not to upend, but to annihilate.

You got your order messed up. Clean room Read great books (Twilight doesn't count) Acquire logos (reasoned thought, roughly speaking) Rescue your father (use logos to improve society) Slay the dragon (Raise your kids to do the same as this list*, transcend your own shortcomings) *I believe ideas cannot be killed, but you can at least make less people believe in bad ones and that is the only way to keep the dragon at bay.

until recently, university was one of few places to acquire a useful academic education. Now-a-days a university degree is little more than an indication that you are (or once were anyway) capable of completing a moderately challenging, multi-year task
@gre8
@gre8 7 лет назад
I am not going to Bullshit you. University, as it is, would help almost nothing. I study International Relations at a top university in my country. One would expect eager students, with sharp minds trying their best to understand the concepts being thrown at them, relating one thing with another, being taught by smart and articulate professors that wil blow their minds every given lecture... Well, it is not. Most cannot handle basic philosophical concepts that have been discussed for the last two years. Cannot relate one thing with another unless someone tells them that they are somehow related (which leaves them open to manipulation by ill-intended faculty); have not read a single book beyond a few suggested chapters in class and can hardly articulate any speech more complex than some superficial political slogan. What is even worse is that, since they are in this top university, they feel they ARE getting a true education and feel they know enough to comment what happens in the world around them. The other day, some self proclaimed feminist girl told me Islam does not demand women to wear a Hijab. It seems amazing but it really happened. I could only ask her if she ever read the Quran and the answer was a resounding "no". What I mean by this is that she had no idea about either Islam or her feminism, thus serving as an example of how they cannot connect two concepts in a coherent structure. If you cannot attend a university at the moment, I would like to suggest you something: go to a library and pick a book on a topic that interests you. It doesn't matter if it is something like philosophy or engineering for dummies. Read it and learn as much as you can. After you finish it, you will know a little more and become able to discern which schools of thought seem more interesting and allow you to dwelve further into it. That, in turn, will allow you to perhaps read the authors of said school of thought themselves and become wiser and more well read, expanding you interest to fields you didn't even imagine would one day interest you. I would say that would be the academic equivalent of "cleaning your room": begin from the "meaningless" and build your way up. Do not feel discouraged before the task if it seems too great. Apply yourself to it, begin at the beggining and steam on. Sorry if my english contains errors, it is a second language, but I felt like I could help you a little and I truly wish you success, should you feel inspired by my comment. Cheers mate.

I was in the humanities. And I mean I was really in them. I loved reading philosophy and challenging my tacit assumptions. I dove into the ancients, and was totally compelled, reading book after book. And then.... post modern social justice ideology took the forefront of class discussions one winters simmester. Needless to say, I am now a carpenter apprentice and feel a whole lot more sane about life.

I'm 27 and just recently discovering what fields I should have gone into almost a decade ago. I've found these talks very valuable, Jordan; it's amazing how much life one can get through without ever encountering anyone who tells it like it is. Definitely ready to stop feeling sorry for myself as a naturally agreeable introvert and allow my actual self to be expressed in the real world. Hopefully, in the next couple of years I will have worked myself to a point where further education is possible, in my case, but until then I take comfort in knowing that my accumulation of knowledge outside of the educational system and developing precision of speech are a step in the right direction. Here's to self-actualization.

Tell us what you REALLY think, Dr. Peterson! At your best here, brilliant. And thank you for the inspiration. The challenge of holding the audience in thrall is always in teetering on that narrow edge between heated passion and exasperated anger, and your oration here was masterful in its teeter! And for bringing those words to that particular audience, you have my admiration. Many of them are no doubt taking detailed notes on how to vanquish you, their newly identified enemy. But I think the number of those you have inspired to do good far outnumber them and will prevail in the end.

Thanks for articulating this idea Dr. Peterson. As a humanities student, I've stuck with studying history and politics because I was lucky enough to have had professors who articulated this same stance to me. When I came out of high school I thought that the humanities would give me fulfillment. After a year of college and before I had good professors I thought I had made the wrong choice and was wasting my time. Reading the foundational texts of the fields you study and those that built your culture is invaluable.
