IMS oversized fuel tank installs for MX/Dirt bikes are fairly straightforward IF you have the right parts on hand... We started this project assuming the stock fuel pump hardware (retaining nut and petcock/connector) would work with the new tank. Well, the IMS tank is roughly 2-3MM thinner than the factory tank so the hardware does not work.
So that can be a bummer, but otherwise this tank is awesome! You barely notice any difference on your knees and if you only put 2.5 gallons in it, the fuel is actually held lower so the center center of gravity is actually better. Great product, I just wish RockyMountain ATV/MC would state the the tank needs extra hardware to install that is not included.
If you are looking to do this install, definitely do yourself a favor and just buy the parts first, you can return them if you don't use them.

Nicely done. I am currently in the process of selling my RC-51 and going to add the 500 EXC-F to the stable. We just moved to Colorado from Tennessee...time to ditch the street and get back to the dirt (still have a trusty 300 2T). Question: I see some folks put a fuel filter in line and some don't. looks like the in-tank pump has a filter. I can't seem to find consensus on whether an additional fuel filter is needed. Did you consider this and if so, why did you decide not to add an aux fuel filter in line? I am definitely not saying you should, but trying to get more information. Thanks and keep on rockin'!

Thanks for the kind words Chris! I took a look at the robustness of the in tank filter, it's pretty darn great in stock form compared to most filters you see on small bore bikes. The little screen in the quick disconnect for the tank in the line will catch anything else big that might get by that filter and I replace that screen at every oil change. That being said, every time i look at that little screen I can't help but think how restrictive it is. Next on the list for this bike is definitely BestDualSportBikes fuel kit with the better in-tank filter, bigger inline filter and the better angled fuel rail for around $250. I've not found much dirt bike content around the reflect-a-gold protection but I like the addition. Any idea how quantifiable heat is protected with the product? Have you noticed a benefit since installation?

Not sure man! On an older bike I saw my gas boil once and it ended up being too much pressure too quick for the check valve in the cap... the tank actually swelled up about 15% and it freaked me out.. so this was my response for this bike. Nothing quantifiable but that hasn’t happened again. So that’s good. lol cheers!

My 350 boils gas every time I ride single track. I tried that heat reflective tape and it didn't make a difference. The fins that hold fuel on the big tank might actually help a lot to cool the fuel.

It’s possible that something in your venting line is constricted or clogged. Also do you have a fan on you 350?

It’s a great tank! Just don’t fill it all the way if you are doing single track riding to keep the center of gravity lower. It’s way more comfortable than the 4.2 I have on my 2020 KTM 500 XCF-w

Good idea, but the original OEM KTM tank cost over $400, these cheap tanks were not really intended to be used on such a great bikes, so I just went ahead and bought a GS1250 with an 8 gallon gas tank and still kept my KTM 500 for real rough trails. Anyone with these monster tanks, try coming down a steep hill and you will see how gravity will be messing up your rides. I would have bought an Orange color tank if Acerbis made one and only in a 3 gallon capacity, anything larger, then you just bought the wrong bike!

Not hugely noticeable. You also don’t have to fill the tank up all the way if you’re going to do a day ride on singletrack.

Hi, I just got a 2012 500EXC and I want to do a seat conversion to something higher/wider (similar to the Seat Concepts design but higher than their tall version) does the Seat Concepts conversion fits right in with the new tank or is there a gap somewhere between the seat and tank?

It has a tiny gap, but the stock seat would too. It’s a problem with the IMS tank, not the seat.

Although I really don’t think you would need them with the stock beefy plastic ones and the with the tank wrapping around the radiators and adding more protection (another reason I chose IMS over Acerbis... and for fear of my manhood smashing that bulge on the Acerbis Tank). 👍🏻👍🏻😂

I use Armorall’s interior cleaner (not the protectant or detailed) to get the dirt off plastic tanks. It works really well!

installing 4.5L IMS on a 2022 KTM 500. Looks to be only about 1/16” clearance between tank where the 2 halves of engine case connect. Wondering if tank will possibly melt from heat. Any thoughts? (The tank is sold for this bike and I added reflective heat tape …but still)

fez those are just the OEM shroud decals from the 2017. I think they just look more pronounced on the black tank. The stock shrouds just bolt over the tank, it’s a really clean install. Cheers!

RR from what I can tell it depends on the year and country you bike is from. What year and country is your bike from?

@@GrandChelem14 Ah ok! Seems like the US tanks (not sure which years this applies to, but definitely on the 2017 500EXC) is made from thicker plastic and the IMS tank is a global application. My guess would be that because of all the smog/emissions equipment including a solenoid valve and charcoal canister for fuel tank venting, on the US bike that there is usually more pressure in the tank and they had to make them stronger to keep them from ballooning. That would be my only guess as to why it's different. Cheers!
