I test rode both the Supersport S and the Panigale 959. I opted for the Supersport- I don't intend to use it on the track so for general use, it suits me better than the Panigale. I love the looks too. It has all the power you need for street use and, in fact, the power is more accessible (at lower RPM), than the Panigale. Add the greater comfort and reduced heating, and you have a winner. I love the bike. I don't see it as having any meaningful compromises over the Panigale for street use. I agree that the mirrors are very disappointing- they are not useless, but above 50 mph, the image is very blurred.
I love everything about it except the failure of the windscreen: they should've brought the fairing up framing out the screen. This screen looks like an aftermarket screwed-on a naked bike. That beauty and riding position is awesome still.
Loose mirrors on a demonstration bike, if I were the manager I would be showing the person responsible for PDI'ing the bike the door. This happened to me at my local BMW dealer. I noticed the plastic lever for the cruise control was missing, what a piss poor advert for BMW. Mediocrity seems to be the new maxime for excellence. Kindest regards A82 Joe.
Seems like a very good package. Couple mods as you mentioned tail tidy good exhaust maybe bar end mirrors? It looks like it could work for commute or touring or even for a track day.
Your review and salesmen, pitch did the job, I have now decided I want one , Mr Flyer ,,, how you fixed for a loan ? Of around 12795 , cheers Shane uk 🇬🇧
You're not the only one to complain about the mirrors, in fact just about every video I've watched on this bike says they vibrate/buzzs quite badly at almost all speeds. (perhaps they buzz so much they loosen the bolts off a bit?) As mentioned by many, this needed a few things to really hit the mark, namely cruise control, heated grips and a lower price. Great video as always.
Great review MSF, lovely looking bike . I think Ducati haven't got it quite right calling it a sports tourer mind . Small petrol tank , no pannier or top box mounting points , compared to the opposition ( Honda VFR Kawasaki Z 1000 etc ) What are the service intervals on the bike ? Thanks BOB
Ducati actually call it a sport-road bike and it`s not a placement to the old ST line so you are right it`s not a proper sport tourer and even with the available semi rigid panniers it`s leaning more toward the sporty side of touring.Basic oil service is at 15,000 km or 12 months and valve clearance at 30.000 km
Not really a tourer - but I think it looks like a genuine "GT" in the sense of fast longer distance express. Hotel at every night stop of your journey rather than campsite, and not much luggage, it'd be fun and relatively comfortable (noted exhaust heat issue aside) even if you needed frequent fuel stops.
Exactly my thoughts Bob. I mean they named it Supersport and that's definitely not what she is and sportstourer.. I also think that's not what it is. I loved the old ST3s and that was a sportstourer. But now, no cruise control, no heated grips and all the other things u mentioned.
At 50 years old, I asked the wife if she fancies learning to ridw motorcycles with me. I was expecting a big NO ... instead, she said, "I want a Ducati." I think this is definitely my future bike when we get round to learning.
I've done about 600 miles or so on the SuperSportS and loved it. The mirrors are rubbish, not sure tightening them would help. I did find you needed to be pretty positive with the quick shifter when really on it especially when changing up beyond 4th, quite a few neutrals which I never got on the 959. In fact if you ride this and the 959 back to back you do notice why the 959 is more money but I guess they are two propositions. Mighty comfy as you say and you can do a good 200 miles in a day no problem on the twisties. Totally agree if you've only got one bike it's a great option, looks good and the down blipper sounds great in the lower gears, pop pop!
Wobbly mirrors and STILL using the indicator switch for functions? :( I utterly detest the modes on the indicator switch on my Multi, sitting at lights with the indicator on, or side of the road with the hazards on and you want to fiddle with the settings and BANG, off go your indicators. That's a safety issue IMO. Not sure what they are thinking, buy they need to think again! The plate attached to the left of the exhaust chamber looks very "meccano". ;)
I just bought a 2019 939 Supersport non S model, with only 2159 km on it. and it has the back seat cover, I bought it after only looking at pictures and seeing a video of it running. I made an offer online and had it delivered the next day, when they pulled it out of the van my first reaction was wow this is a beautiful looking machine. it looked like new like it just came off the showroom floor. and when I road it for the first time my first impression was that it was even better than I was hoping for. and the second time I road it I fell in love with it. I love the seat hight. I love the stable confident inspiring handling. the way it holds lines around the sweeping turns. the sound of the stock pipes, the power delivery. the only negative is the shaking mirrors, and the engine heat. and I live in a very hot place. but I have tested many bikes. and owned a few in my life. and this is my favorite bike I have every owned. it is so sweet, every time I look at it I drool. I bought the gps tracker with the link on your channel. but I haven't received it yet. I hope when I get it that it works as good as I'm expecting it too.
Those bars are driving me nuts. It looks as if the left grip is about to fall off. Either that or the bar is longer than the right bar. Or it's a Chinese illusion. I'd like it a lot better in yellow. Not a fan of frames painted the color of the fairing. Black is sufficient. Did you see the new liter Duc Scramblers? Very very nice. Demo time!
Interesting (but good as always) review TMF,not sure if this bike is a Sports Tourer as such,to me its an everyday Sports Bike for those that find Panigales etc a tad too extreme.Agreed on it being priced a bit too much imo but as you say that's what comes with the brand. As a VFR owner I admit I'm wavering a bit, maybe next year as more come on the second hand market I might see if I can save a few ££££'s,look forward to your forthcoming video's thanks.
TMZ you have sold it to me found a stunner with lots of carbon and ackrapovic exhausts and in red get mine on Monday appreciate your informative videos all done from a average riders perspective thanks again
Great to see you have got your hands on a dealers Ducati, a dealer has seen sense !!! Nice review, looks good, and even better once that tail tidy has been ripped off !!!, and replaced by an R&G.... looks a nice ride, a sensible amount of usable power...love your reviews, must be the best Vlogger on the Tube, good quality honest reviews and detail, not like the many 4-10 mins rushed reviews that are around !!!!... thanks for you dedication and hard work !!!!
I have to agree, you are my favourite Bike reviewer 👍🏻 I hope you can still get your helmet on after all these nice comments lol Now you have started reviewing Kawasaki, can you review the s1000sx touring model if you get a chance please Great review, safe riding buddy
That is not true check the owners manual Both colors have clear coats. Ducati anniversary red Primer, Antiflex White code L00440652 (Lechler). Primer, Acriflex Red code 473.101 (PPG); Clear coat code 228.880 (PPG); aluminum color frame and black rims. Star White Silk Primer code 873.AC001 (Palinal); Base coat code 928.T948 (Palinal); Clear coat code 96.598 (Lechler); aluminum color frame and black rims.
Then why did the flyer and others need to put clear plastic on his red panigale to keep the paint from rubbing off? I say this based on entries in this pani ducati thread ducatiforum.com/ducati-899/16896-ducati-899-paint-care-strategy.html where they discuss the fact that the pani does not have clear over base on the red version
Excellent as Always :) ...After missing the 899, and delaying my decision on the 959... this maybe the new kit for me in 2018, Have a great Holiday season & RSMF
I own this bike and it’s even better with the Ackro system at the back - blue flames and everything! Sounds like a burbling twin then, much better 🤩 - plus no space for a pillion, win!
Great balanced review, I have this same S bike in red too and love it, it has everything I need, looks, power, acceleration is awesome and is very comfortable indeed.
@@ajmotovideos6779 I’ve had mine coming up to 4 years and it’s been a 2nd bike only as I also ride an 850GS so the mileage is still low around 7k. Just had the one issue whereby the fuel sender failed, it was replaced by Ducati Manchester. My bike has FDSH too and looks the biz in Ducati red, I love riding it in warm sunny weather.
@@wokeupandsmellthecoffee214 thanks for the reply. I'm looking at getting one soon just worried about reliability but from what I've read and heard in forums they seem for the most part rather reliable, nothing like the old Ducatis
Always a nice review, had a 1990 900 SS once so I am really interested in this bike. But I will put a coin that they will come out with a bigger Supersport soon. Hopefully with XDiavel engine in it, they can´t miss that niche.
I can’t get used to the looks and that’s being mild. It’s a parts bin special. The engine from the Hypermotard, the frame is off the monster and the front end is a hideous mishmash of the Multistrada and the Panigale. In a world of Multistradas with monstrous power and ‘go anywhere’ ability or Hyperstradas with their fun factor and touring bias I simply don’t understand the need for this Frankenstein.
I really really like this bike. But will this Ducati engine be reliable operating every day. You dream of owning a Ducati as a boy. Now it’s finally a possibility I’d hate the the dream get smashed by unreliable motor.
I've got a 2000 Ducati 900ss and have used it as a daily commuter 10 or 11 months in the year for the last 4 years. Never failed me...even take it on my camping trips....serviced at an independent Ducati garage and it's been so good and reliable I'm unlikely to move to a different make. The only people who have issues are those who don't look after their bikes or rarely use them.
Asphalt 8 Airborne: The Ducati SuperSport S Was Added In Motorcycles Update As a Low-End Class A Motorcycle As Of The Fifteenth Anniversary Update The SuperSport S Is Now A High-End Class C Mototcycle
I disagree. I have had the one bike for touring, camping trips and commuting for the last 4 years and my 19 year old Ducati has been rock solid and totally reliable.
I just came across one of these second hand with very low miles I'm not sure if its the S but it does have the painted plastic cover over the back seat. so I had to check out a review because I know nothing about it. can you upgrade the mirrors ? how is the dependability ? did you buy one ? I also came across a BMW S1000R for a similar price just a little more, with really low miles. do you know about the BMW and how they compare ? thanks
no cruise control, a screen that doesnt look suitable for touring, strangest headlight design ever, same price gets you the faster 765 triple..2k more gets you a superduke GT or the R. good review, but they messed this up..
Just recently purchased a 2019 SuperSport, and I absolutely love the SuperSport series. Haven’t rode in six years, and that bike made me feel right at home after that time. Always wanted a Ducati as well, and I can’t recommend it enough, either of the years.
I actually test rode this bike right before my superduke and really liked it. The mirrors still vibrate a fair bit even when done up properly though. A little too leaned over for me but if you were used to a sports bike very comfy.
Nice bike, read somewhere that PCP deals on the S model are only around 20-30 a month more for all that suspension lovelyness! Worth spending more if you can. Are you off to the NEC?
Really? I test rode this bike in California in 80F (26C in the civilized world) and in city street speed the bike emits a boiling amount of heat to my inner thigh its almost Panigale-like. Yes and the mirrors also vibrate to a point I can hardly see anything clearly behind. But great review as usual MSF!
I realise this video is 5 years old so i dont expect a response but oh well. I was looking on the Ducati website at this bike and they have put it in their 'Ducati depowered' section, and say that it can be ridden on an A2 license. Ive also heard this from other people (BikeMatters namely), and was wondering if you had a better idea of whether its retractable or not. According to Ducati it has 110 bhp (81kW), and i thought you could only restrict down from 70kW? I realise you might have no better idea than i do, but i cant find anything about it online. Any help would be appreciated!
@@TheMissendenFlyer Thanks for the reply, yeah thats what ive been seeing. Just to add another level of complexity to it im going ot try to find out if i can buy a used one and get ducati to restrict it but i have a feeling they'll run a mile, either way, thanks for getting back
I can only afford one bike so need tonise for commuting. Going to trade tiger in and really like the look of this. Am I insane? Or could this work as a do it all machine? (Only been riding 2 years so be kind in replies 😆)
I am on an A2 license at the mo' and the fact I want to go through the stress of Mod 1 and Mod 2 again to get one means it's probably the right decision! 😊
Cracking video as always TMD, I can’t decide if she’s for me or not, its nice but not stunning, like your Ducati, the sort of add on screen, low spec engine, dash, mmm, makes me think 7/10 not wow, I want to seek my two bikes and a kidney to get one, as it’s beautiful.
Great review as always, I like similar motorcycles as you do and I have to say that one bike i fell in love is Multistrada 950s - what a surprise for me :)
@@benjamincs1 you are totally right - thanks to higher torque of 1260 it is smoother in low revs, but from my experience, Ducati bikes love to run in higher revs :) at 950s I can use even 5th on normal roads gear and not drive like a lunatic. 1260 is build for much higher speed. If you love driving really fast, ten go for 1260. If you want to enjoy more potencial of the bike, ten 950s - my experience :)
I really like the looks and if I was after an all-around sportbike, that'd be on the list to check out. The mirrors were almost laughable though watching them quiver. Maybe you scared them? lol.
Could u possibly get lower clipons as I would be interested in purchasing this bike however I sat on it and for me it's too upright. Nothing stupidly low but just a bit lower
Bought my SSS in March 2019. Best first big bike in my opinion. 60hp in urban mode. 112hp in sport mode. Beautifully balanced and great around town. I ride it 7 days, rain or shine. Mirrors you can replace as a recall from the dealer. I’ve done 3500 miles in 4 months, commuting around London and small trips out of town. If you’re a big boy and act responsibly, this will be a great first big, new bike. The screen at the front is adjustable. Suspension front and back is adjustable. 16 litre tank, riding in town, gives you 170 miles of range.
does this bike has the same heating issue like ducatis ... because i havent bought ducati for this specific reason only... but if you havent come acrooss any reason.. then i might just go and buy it !!
Aniket Rana evevry bike is toasty between the legs once it heats up. This one , the heat is very well managed. Two fans try to keep the temperature down and kick in at 100+ to bring back down below 100. This is ONLY in standing traffic. On the road you do not notice any heat. I managed to keep the temperature down to as low as 77-78 degrees going 70mph on a motorway.
I must be different to the normal biker - I think the side view of the SS is nasty. The way in which the lower fairing just stops makes it look unfinished. Put a Ducati badge on it and people coo. Put the words Honda VFR and people think it's boring. When you look at the specs they're very close - yes the SS does produce around 10bhp more and significantly more torque initially, however, the SS produces 115bhp @ 9krpm and revs-out at 10krpm / the VFR produces 105bhp @ 10krpm but revs out over 12krpm. Haven't looked at the gearing, but suggest that the VFR could use slightly lower gearing to achieve the same top speed and acceleration of the SS. The SS could still edge it in terms of acceleration, but it would be a tiny difference on the quarter mile run. Other than this, objectively, the VFR has much better fuel range, a far smoother engine (with a 'characterful' V4 configuration) and subjectively looks better than the SS.. (I don't own a VFR BTW!!) ..I do feel for Honda in many respects when it comes to UK, RSA and USA (in-particular) journalists and bikers, when you hear the way they go on - Honda builds a beautifully engineered products, but because they don't vibrate like hell, don't corrode and are reliable, they don't have 'character'. It's very odd. On the continent for example the VFR much more than it does in the UK. What I can't figure is whether it is UK journalists or UK bikers that set the vogue - or maybe it's that bikers/journalists on the continent are less easily-led?
I must be in a minority here, this thing looks like my Daughters Pug from the front. Being honest I think, it's one of Ducati's only backward steps in recent times. A sports tourer it is not by a long chalk, the panniers available from Ducati are crap, the riding position is too extreme for any serious distance work too. I own three ST series bikes (ST2, ST3 and an ST3/s ABS as well as a 2016 FJR1300AE and a '94 FJ12003xw. This bike is a backwards step from the ST3/s ABS, it's no quicker is less comfortable and has less luggage carrying capacity , what the hell is going on over in Borgo Pannigale?
Personally never been a Ducati fan apart from the 916, although I ride a V-Twin myself! That RH mirror if you ask me is faulty, left one seems fine in the video, but aside from that, I personally think the view from the riding position is fugly!, ...... just my opinion, but as I said never been a Ducati man. Nice video and review all the same, well done TMF, RSM8
I'm looking to get a sports tourer and obviously have considerd the Ninja 1000SX but my thoughts are turning more and more towards the Ducati. Your review is very useful, as always. Thanks
Well I haven't ridden the Suzuki or Kawa so I can't really say! Depends what you want to use it for, if you're planning on touring then I'd start with the Kawasaki.....
Ive ridden them all suzuki was the best. Combination of all smooth power quality of ride and much Cheaper. Kawa is great for touring but still feels big and heavy .but definitely improved over the last model and tbe iMU was the unique feature kawa have compare to others
Those mirrors were damn funny! :D :D Although it just needed tightening. Btw license plates in England are very large and ugly. Totally ruins the looks of the bike
Thank you for the informative review. Please don't kid yourself about the shaking mirrors being specific to the sample you rode. The one I rode did the same thing, and I've watched many RU-vid videos of people riding and reviewing the new Supersport and the mirrors are blurring the images in every case. Ducati has, IMHO, always considered mirrors to be a necessary evil in order to meet safety laws as reflected in the lack of usability in so many of Ducati's sports models historically. The unfortunate thing with this model is that you can't get rid of the factory mirrors in favor of bar-end mirrors or something else because they also house the turn signals. I'm hoping they will address this issue in the new model year, but somehow I doubt they will. Great bike otherwise. Thanks again, and ride safe!
I have a euro size 43 shoe and i bumped up against the pillion pegs quite ofen when i was riding just me ? Also yes i agree , the mirrors are horrible . Allthough it was very nice low and midrange torque i miss a bit of a boost up top , this would have been an epic machine of they got it to 130-140 BHP
Looks like a decent bike albeit poor mirrors would be enough for me to genuinely spend my money elsewhere. Inexcusable at this price point. Thanks for another great review.
