Seven months after this video and it's a different comparison, because all other power train choices besides the 2017 version of the 3.5L Ecoboost were updated and equalized to some extent. The 5.0 was redone with 10 more horses and 13 more ft-lb albeit now at 750 higher RPM; now way up at 4500, and mated to the ten speed; maxing mpg rating at 17/23/19 in 2WD and standard duty and standard gearing, which is class-leading mpg; and virtually tying the 3.5L EB in drag race tests at near sea level. The 2.7L Ecoboost was slightly reworked for 2018 (less work than the V8) but still gets 25 more ft-lb than the 2015-2017 version; also mated to the 10 speed and goes the other way on RPM; peaking now at 2750 RPM versus 3,000 previously; and mpg maxing out now at 20/26/22, which is class-leading for all gas-powered half tons. That's +3 city, + hwy, and +3 versus the latest V8, combined; both configured for max mpg. Comparing torque, the 2.7L comes in with the same peak number but more than 1700 RPM lower than the V8 making the 2.7L the most diesel-like of all their gas engines. In this video, the 2.7 was shown at 19/25, for city highway, but I have a 2015 that was/is rated at 19/26/22, so it's a little under represented here versus the other listings that were shown in max mpg configuration. The 3.5L Ecoboost is a carryover. So power, torque and combined mpg comparison; it's now; 3.5, 5.0, 2.7, respectively--HP: 375@5000 /395@5850 /325@5000; Torque: 470@3500 /400@4500 /400@2750; Combined mpg: 21/19/22. All very with good expected reliability based on their histories; and so all good choices. The prices differences are basically $1K step up for each one, but the 2.7L is the base engine for Lariat; the 5.0 is the base for King Ranch, and the 3.5L doesn't become the standard except but for Limited. If you work your truck often and heavy then the mpg advantages for the twin turbos go away, so in that case mpg in that kind of scenario, it is probably a wash; but there is nothing to say that the V8 will outlast the two twin turbos even in a hard-working scenario as they all seem to be pretty reliable. If you choose one of the smaller and less appointed configurations, then the 2.7 becomes more attractive, because it will likely get real world mpg closer to the rating because less weight and smaller wheel/tires suggest that the turbos will spool less often and not as fast, but as you go up the price scale and mass of a truck, then the 2.7L becomes more average (at least that's my theory with a regular cab, 2WD achieving 24 mpg lifetime versus the average buyer getting around 18). You can't go wrong it would seem, so pick what you like. A couple of points on the comments n the video...The 5.0 is not significantly heavier than the 2.7L; they're roughly the same weight when planted in equally-configured pickups. I think the difference is less than 25 pounds according to the specs at the Ford site. The engine itself is heavier; yes; but once set up for sell with all the accessory equipment and emissions and all of that, they're roughly the same weight. The PSD is much, much heavier than any of them. Compared to the base engine, the 3.0 PSD comes in more than 600 pounds more. The 3.5L Ecoboost is by far the heaviest gas-powered choice for an F150, but the PSD exceeds it's weight by more than 400 pounds after installed, even though the engine itself is not all that much heavier. The reason: mostly emission equipment. Trucks were not born with V8s. V8s were originally brought to trucks from muscle car lines because they were already being produced by the manufacturers and had the power demanded by consumers, but if we're talking tradition and best fit for a pickup as a work vehicle, even though they've been around a long time, a small block V8 is not it. A small turbo charged engine makes more sense for a truck, because a turbo gives it much more boost and gives it more torque relative to power, which is what a truck needs and is why heavy trucks use them. Imagine an over the road truck with a V8 naturally-aspired engine with GVWR at 80,000 lbs. It'd have to be probably 14-liters, and it'd get about 1.5 mpg.

Great review by Greg. In my experience the MPG ratings unless younare doing 60 MPG don't come close to the advertised number. Auto start gets me 1mpg more,but is not annoying than it's worth. My 2.7 super crew has amazing 0-60 and pretty good passing in sport mode. All of these trucks get killed in mpg after hitting 80mph. Wind is an absolute killer on MPG. Fuel ratings are much better (almost 15% for me) using real gas-- which is one if the reasons I hate ethanol.

I recently bought the 2018 with the 2.7. It now has the 10 speed. Ford had an incentive package for the XLT with the 302A option group, navigation, chrome package with the 2.7. If you bought that combo you could have up to 11 K including 750 off going through Ford Finance. Because of that incentive package I therefore ended up with the 2.7. Still under break in period so too soon to say how I like it, but so far it's really nice.

I've driven all of these at some point. I drove a 2013 f150 crewcab with the first gen 3.5. It's a great engine but the second gen is better. Gas mileage is the same as the 5.0 which was my next truck, a 2018 supercab with the 5.0. The coyote is an amazing engine and always keeps pulling. The biggest difference is the torque off the line. Now I am driving a 2018 f150 crewcab with the 2.7. I am more than impressed with this little engine. Gas mileage is amazing, the power delivery is amazing (10 speed helps a lot), and it keeps up with anything i've raced so far. All in all they are great motors. For simplicity, get a 5.0, for heavy towing, get a 3.5, for occasional towing, get a 2.7.

I just bought a 2018 3.5 Ecoboost. Wow it's fast. I just found out the entire body is 6000 grade aluminum which helps to get the weight down to 4900 pounds. That's great for going fast and I hope it's heavy enough to keep it planted for towing.

I own the 2016 2.7 Ecoboost. I judge the best truck as the one that cost me the least in repairs since I buy new and keep it till it's completely useless and hope to get at least 10 plus years of hassle free repairs. I found that in a 2005 Ford F150 5.4, but I got really lucky in the long run. Those motors had their problems for sure, but the only component I ever replaced was the starter that went out at 290,000 miles. Everything else is original including the alternator, catalytic converter, muffler, tail pipe, and brake line...all are still original. I never replaced the timing chain although they say I should've done it at 100,000. Today, August 22, 2020 I have 325,000 miles and never changed the timing chain ever. I got the famous ticking noise from roller followers, but never changed those either. It's a great running truck with really quick pick up speed. I guess I just got lucky in picking a truck. I only use fully synthetic motor oil, and keep it clean. Oh, I did have to replace the V belts a couple times, and the wiper blades, and tires, and brakes...that's it!

Two weeks ago I traded my '97 F150 Super Cab XLT 4.6 liter 2WD for a 2017 F150 XLT Super Crew Cab 2.7 EcoBoost 4WD. I test drove the 5.0 V8 (which I wanted) and the 2.7 EcoBoost. I'd done just enough research to know that the 5.0 and the 2.7 EcoBoost would get almost the same real-world mileage.I am VERY mistrustful of technology; other than the oil leaks, I was happy with my first truck, a '78 F100 5 liter 2WD work truck with three on the tree, bought brand new (I'll buy a used car but NOT a used truck.) I'd always wanted 4WD but never wanted to part with the extra coin. Since I am gonna be 60 this year, I decided that you can't spend your whole life picking grit with the chickens, and I've learned not to settle, so I sprung for the 4WD.Back on point - - I test drove the 5 liter first, and was IMPRESSED. This is NOT the same 5 liter as my first truck, THIS engine kicked BUTT. Then, I drove the 2.7L EcoBoost... the one with the impressive (and surely unobtainable) EPA mileage figures.OH MY LORD. The 2.7L EcoBoost drives this 4 door aluminum beer can FAST. I don't trust turbochargers (remember, I am old and set in my ways) but I'd heard that the 2.7 was designed from ground up to accommodate twin turbos. CRIPES!I only buy a truck every 20 years or so. The technology in my 2017 is simply bewildering (I have an engineering degree by the way, so I can at least follow the discussion, if not lead it.) Ford engineers have grown progressively more evil over the decades with respect to changing one's own motor oil, but off the showroom floor, the product they offer has become exponentially more exciting to drive.I just hope the 2017 lasts as long as it's predecessors. I love this truck to death and will hate to part with it when I'm almost 80. ;)

I have only given it short highway tests for mileage but so far very good. The last one was on a flat country road for 30 km. @ 80 km/hr. and I having difficulty believing the results, 32 mpg. Have the 17 xlt 5.0 6 speed because I buy trucks and keep them for a long time so I want reliability and longevity. The other engines are more expensive to work on with more plumbing and complexity. Adding turbos and high pressure systems to smaller engines causes them to wear out faster. Auto start/stop just adds complexity, cost, and more wear on engine parts.

If I end up with the 3.5L its getting at tuner, can't have it sound like a turd unless it move like stink. Its really hard finding a 5.0L with 3.73's. @boby115
@boby115 3 года назад
@@rockriver15 ,. You are dealing with stronger engine components and cooler exhaust temperatures. Gasoline turbo engines tend to have more problems in many cars, although there are a lot of turbo engines that are reliable. A gasoline turbocharged engine has more component than a naturally aspirated (non turbo ) motor. These include an exhaust wastegate setup, intercooler, boost control system, vacuum pump and a more complicated crankcase ventilation (PCV). A turbo charger itself is not uncommon to fail, the more parts the more can go wrong. At higher mileage as the cylinder walls and piston rings wear out, higher combustion chamber pressure results in increased pressure inside the engine crankcase.This can result in oil leaks that pop up from many places and are difficult to fix. You are correct, there are many turbocharged diesels that can go a very long time with very few problems, I just don't think they have a handle on the small displacement turbo charged gasoline engines at this time.

Not necessarily, diesels run high compression all day and can see a million miles. Which is why the 2.7L and the second gen 3.5L both have CGI blocks and offset con rods just like diesels. Mechanics only have V8's because the like the sound, not because of maintenance. I'm a mechanic and I have both. I'de honestly say its a toss up for how long a Ecoboost vs Coyote will last, either should do quarter million miles with good maintenance no problem.

The Tundra is the most obsolete truck on the market you're paying for a new truck that was designed and introduced over 12 years ago. Toyota takes care of their customers...only after they loose in court and the NHTSA forces a recall. And there's the infamous Tundra limp home mode after air pump system failure etc, etc...

Yes, I like the difference between the engines and technology that's put into it which makes all 3 engines unique in its own way. it would be great to see the 5.0 engine with a 10 speed transmission also or just maybe a turbo also and it would be killer!!!! I'm a fan of the big aspirated engine that's pushing power all day long but, I have to admit the 2.7 and the 3.5 is pretty cool too. my biggest concern is the maintenance of the transmission and turbo when that time comes!!!!
@AmericanSurvival001
@AmericanSurvival001 7 лет назад
Scott Mims cause yeah "uniqueness", everybody knows , is what makes engines and transmissions last, and for the record Turbos are cheap to maintain and rebuild.. it's the engines that have worn themselves out from overboost that will be expensive, where are Fords previous engines attempts in the last 20 years?? all gone.... except the 5.0 all bad designs...yep....
@johnnygarcia7269
@johnnygarcia7269 7 лет назад
Scott Mims when I sell my 14 raptor I'm probably going to diesel because Ford F-150s now are a joke in my opinion, i look at the reliable and long lasting picture here. This trucks are Huge and no way will I want a v6 engine on a truck. Another problem I have is the aluminum body. I don't want an economic light weight "truck" I want a big strong v8 truck that can last. I haven't seen any 1990s v6 Ford /chevy/ dodge on the streets, have you? No, they died out long ago and I still see a lot of big v8 trucks from the 90s 2000s. I know the states ford give out to justify this atroches new trucks but come on. This new gen trucks are becoming less for work and more for just plane and simple driving. For that u have a civic (for example,because ford aperantly want a lightweight economic truck) I didn't buy a new raptor for many reasons, first of is the price, over 30k more than then my raptors 53k price from dealer. Way too expensive, it's like buying two 2014 raptors now , for that I'll be a house and rent it. Second because of the small unrealiable engine. It's an off-road car race truck, I don't care if it's faster. That's not gonna convince me to buy one, raptors purpose is to give it hell (if u use it for the inicial purpose it was made for) small engine that will crack when it reaches 100,000 miles where as my raptor can have 200,000 and still drive like new. (I have 16 k miles on mine lol) and third reason is the annoying 2k mile turbo liquid change. My dad drives his f250 consistently and he's always doing it. This long paragraph is my thoughts on this new gen trucks from ford. It's sad seeing this happen to ford specially since I've been only with ford trucks
@AmericanSurvival001
@AmericanSurvival001 7 лет назад
Johnny Garcia LOL you realize FoRD has literally built a disposable trucks with these V6's why would they force anyone to buy a $55,000 raptor with one engine option?? i will tell you most guys here are uneducated ( sheep )idiots FACT, who will buy anything ford produces , Ford could have given at least 2 options with the old 6.2 available as well but that would cost them money in producing 2 different engine mounts and controls systems. Ford has only one Motive, to make MOney and they save 10 of millions having only one engine option and then pushing it as a GREAT! engine!! that's fine shove it up your ASS!!... and give me the 6.2 LOL!!. Now through their socialist experiment in telling you what you want to drive.... they have lost 25% of the brand loyalty and many raptors buyers because of this i PERSONALLY KNOW 2 WHO WONT BUY THEM NOW.. you can buy a F150 with 3 engine options?? why not the Raptor?? after all if i wanted a smaller non turbo 5 .0 what's wrong with that?? FORD socialism that's what's wrong " we will sell the ECO bullshit over boosted V6 it to our patrons as a benefit ,but we will save millions in doing so, and they the dumb buyers will never say a word ..except they did , and i live IN salt lake city. out here in the west there are many 90's trucks running around on the road chevys have all rusted away and the fords with their endless engine problems 97 -2007 are few as well. there are tons of dodge trucks and durangos and jeeps still running around town along with my 94 Dodge Ram 1500 gas 5.7 with 500,000 miles on it. If you read up you'll understand the difference in engine quality, and understand what the difference between them is and why ford and chevy are 250,00 MAX mile engines unless you dump money in them endless problems Cam phaser, spark plug extraction junk shit !!!!! if you want to own a truck for the next 30 years buy a dodge just drive one you'll see a difference ...and you will get 4-5 miles per gallon more in any engine class with a dodge that is afact go drive one and see...WHY DOES DODGE BUILDING AN ENGINE THAT CAN BE CONFIGURED FROM 392 HP TO OVER 1000HP WHILE FORD AND CHEVY ARE BUILDING MOPEDS?? AND CHARGING MORE FOR THEM??? R I P OF F !!!!

I just got a 17' eco boost and yes, it is extremely smooth and you barely feel it shift. I have the 3:55 gears in mine and at 55mph it is barely spinning 1300rpm. A truly amazing machine. I love it. If you're after fuel economy I would stick with the standard gear ratio though. At interstate speeds once it gets toward the 1700-2000rpm range the turbos get spinning and economy really starts to drop. It still only has about 4000 miles on it. I'm hoping maybe as the engine breaks in it may start doing a little better.
