Please don't flame me on the year, i put the year i video this car, i know this car is old. The Ford Focus was one of the world's best selling cars a few years ago, but instead of their massive success, Ford decided to not do anything with it and just facelift it - twice. Judging from how the competition has moved on, I decided to have a look at these two once favourites today to see how they fare now.

Dear Bobby, does the torque converter lock-up in every gear or does it lock up in high gears only? I prefer that it locks up immediately once the car is moving so that there is less power loss.

Hi Bobby, putting aside other aspects of the car, what would you choose in terms of the driving dynamics, power,brakes and driving flow, Civic 1.5 Turbo or this? Personally it's tough for me to decide, I personally think Civic is way more handsome, but that slightly better power output and handling from the Ford on the other hand seems tempting. Hopefully I'll be able to decide haha

Dear Boddy, nice video is done here. It's very informative. If I may, could I have a request from you, which I hope that you would be kind and generous by giving us a tutorial or an explanation on how to drive cars with dsg/ dual clutches transmission to avoid headache. These cars are good to drive but painful to own. Looking forward to it. Thanks!
@BobbyAngmalaysia
@BobbyAngmalaysia 7 лет назад
Dual clutch transmissions hate traffic jams. and all transmissions are actually stressed when you do a sudden kick down. Lastly, no matter how, dual clutch transmissions won't last as long as torque converters and torque converters won't last as long as manual transmissions because this is mechanically inherent ...

ive got the 2017 trend 1.5t. ive had it for a bit over a year. im yet to find anything real to complain about. few tiny complaints such as coin storage for convenience is non existent. unless youve got baby sized hands, but its a minor inconvenience. the power is like he said, feels much like a bigger aspirated engine rather than small turbo charged, and that feels great. i assume all manufacturers bs about economy stats and ford arent innocent here either. even driving for total economy, i cant get near the econ stated by ford in the specs. but its not a guzzler either, id call it an average economy in its class. for a 1.5, youd expect better econ, but the power and drive is worth the little extra fuel. still good tho, just not what is claimed by ford. this car does handle very well and i would not hesitate to hit curves a bit harder than say a corolla, but this diminishes dramatically if you carry an extra passenger, but just the driver in the car gives a near race feel (the term race feel is not like a true sport car, rather its a comparison to other hatchbacks in its class. but yes, its more fun without anyone else in the car.) my seats in the back however do fold flat unlike the ones in this vid, but only when i roll the actual seat up, then the backrest down, and its quite a roomy boot area then and this is great for me as my back seats are never used so i keep it in fold down position all the time and the room is similar then to a medium sized station wagon in terms of luggage room. and i like the car overall and the price comparison in australia is great. i test drove a lot of hatches before deciding on the ford, it outperformed the toyota, suburu, mitsubishi, and hyundai in terms of cost verse performance. its the most fun out of all these. others had better coin storage, boot space and stuff, but i chose the ford due to performance rather than cabin convenience. like i said, i cant complain about all that as i knew this when i bought it, and was buying a driving car over buying a perfect interior car. ive gone on very long drives on speed limitless highways, and its a drivers car, not a family hatch. its designed to be driven and not lived in. lol. but like all turbos, at a certain constant speed/rev range, it chews more fuel than a v8, but at 180kph, its a lot of fun and still very nimble. even if the fuel more than doubled. ie. at 180, you get no more than 300kilometers on a tank,,,,,,,same drive at 100kph youll get 650...700k's from a tank. and even better still, at constant 90kph, you mite get over 700 k's a tank. its one of the better cars for night driving in relation to dash position and illumination on the dash and screens. functional but retains its sporty look and feel at night. only downside here is that ford charges more for the service than other cars. its on the high end of service cost. but again i was aware of the cost before buying it. but its still a shame they cant charge similar to toyota and hyundai service costs. would i recommend it? ONLY to men who are single and dont carry passengers, but still want a sport feel with out sport car cost. if you have a partner and kids and you need a car to shop or kids school runs etc, go the corolla. if your a guy who is going to drive lots on your own then this is the better choice in my opinion. its not at all slow. just the opposite. its a little rocket if you drive it right.

Ford resolved the dry dual clutch transmission issue of the mk3 by replacing it with a conventional 6 speed torque converter but introduced a more serious problem with the Ecoboost engine. I was informed about overheating issues of the problematic engine by an experienced mechanic who specialises in Ford vehicles as some owners sent their mk3.5 to him for repairs.

Hi Bobby, I've been away from M'sia for quite some years and find your reviews a godsend. I test drove the 118i recently. As I put my foot down on the pedal, there was hardly any response as the revs got louder and I counted something like 3 seconds after the pedal went flat on the floor before the turbo kicked in. The brake pedal was equally sluggish. When I came off the highway onto the exit ramp, the 118i rolled somewhat. It was thoroughly disappointing and I wondered if the demo unit I tried (already 6,000 km) just happened to have been off after some use. I presume the one you reviewed wasn't this sluggish? Hope to hear your insights as I'm still trying out different hatches.
@BobbyAngmalaysia
@BobbyAngmalaysia 6 лет назад
+kindface you must be the kind where you like edgier cars. The previous 120i with the 'horrible' suspension we all say won't roll, cos it's super stiff. The unit we tested has good brakes. And as for power, if you dont drop it into sports mode, there will be lag if you dump the throttle all of a sudden. Maybe we test srove too many modern small cylinder turbocharged cars and since they all have turbolag, we've gotten used to it. So far the ones that response the quickest are VAG group cars

Sadly, its a bit slower than expected. I mean if you are buying a less spacious n practical car, then you want the performance such as 0-100 to be good. Here's my research of the 0-100 of a few cars, Civic Type R 5.7s, Civic 1.5TC 7.2s, City Hybrid 8.5s (full batt boost) or over 10s with no boost, Focus 1.5 Ecoboost 9s, Civic 1.8 10.8s. So the Focus turbo is actually slower than a City hybrid. :(

My dream is for the car to have Waze app that speaks to my phone via Bluetooth connection and sync with my calendar. So my phone's waze will prompt me to leave now at 10:15am for my 11:30am appointment because an accident happen along the road i need to use, then when i walk up my car 15 mins later (waze accounted for my preparation time) the car's infotainment system already linked to waze and starts guiding. So far no other map apps are as good as waze IMO. Apple Maps has a way better intuitive interface than both Google maps and Waze but it's map database is crap still. Google maps is good but it's interface is a convoluting mess. Waze is damn good but now bloated up with ads and all that shit, and accidentally touching it then everything comes out blocking your view lol .... .

I own the 2015 trend spec. Been driving it for 6 years now. This model is so good, it has gone under the radar by many "expert" reviewers Pro: - powerful (the torque and speed is really good) - superb built quality (the doors are really heavy, the plastic is sturdy, sound dampening is really good) - radio and speaker quality is definitely built to last (Bluetooth connectivity is seamless for any phone) - handling is tight and precise for a heavy car - it's hard to describe, but u can definitely feel the conti built quality compared to similarly priced civics and corolla in Malaysia. - Uses wet clutch, so no issues with gears compared to earlier models. - the cars design is timeless, it won't look like an old modal so fast compared to japanese/local/Korean cars. - so many bodykits and exterior modification options like spoilers and rims as well. Cons: - a little more expensive to service but for good reasons. Oil change is a little more expensive because the car release quite a lot of heat from the engine bay, so use good engine oil. (Engine is powerful = more heat = use good engine oil). The battery can last you 2 years, so it's a little more expensive, but the value is the same as changing your batteries yearly. Uses timing chain which I think is cheaper to maintain. - slightly tight interior, so suitable for 4 adults and 1 child only. - no keyless entry - no reverse camera My only advise, a conti car is always going to be more expensive to maintain, but the cars will last longer. When you change gear, give it a millisecond before you press on the accelarator. Just a tip i got from an old uncle in order to look after your gears. Self parking and stuff is very subjective but I think it's a gimmick so it doesn't bother me. For 20k extra, I rather save it for years of maintenance fees. So I've been using this car for 6 years, and even my friends keep reminding me how good the car is till today

Hot hatches. Tight and compact. If the car spacious the things in ur car roll over here and there. Make uncomfortable while layan windy roads. U need to unload the things or the things will get stuck in this kind of car.

I wouldn’t want to tune these engines. They are prone to breaking down when pushed. I own one and I’m on my 2nd engine

Jetta 5 yrs unlimited mileage warranty & free service. Service & spare parts problem are less. Latest version far more improved. U get improved versions dual clutch and no more twin charge. Only single charge which prolonged ur car durability. Spacious of course. In other hand Ford Focus offer u GTI near performance with conventional gearbox. Test drive and choose based on your needs.

Thomas Yoong focus considered expensive for a hatchback not many willing to spend that much when another couple thousand will buy you a Camry Larger more premium feel car Until you've experienced the Ford Focus first hand then you know its a value buy in terms of performance, interior design, build quality and also dem SPEAKERS. Dem bass. I'm not sure about the new focus but the old 2.0 NA high spec Focus without the ecoboost has tons of bass.

sad, as middle income malaysian we cannot enjoy ford/volvo level of technology. japanese brand are using this as excuse and not bringing us best of their technology. everybody wait for one brand to introduce better spec, then they follow.
