After rewatching your video and a few others I decided to give it a try myself. I just changed out all six spark plugs and don’t have any warning lights anymore. My VCMTuner II should be here in the next day or two and I’ll install it and drive the van some and let you know how it goes. Thanks for putting this video together!!
Nice I also ordered the vcm muzzler and still waiting for it to arrive sorry for the late response. also Honda should have addressed issue, But I still think it doesn't do its full combustion when eco is on and off which allows the plugs to become wet, and this is my first 6 cylinder Honda iv always had a 4cyl civics never any issues. How is the van?
Thanks for the video. I not gonna lie. I kept this video playing on my phone as I worked on the rear three spark plugs on a 2011 model. Super informative for me. I'm shopping around for the VCM tuner/muzzler. So far Check Engine light and the Slippery When Wet looking light hs cleared out. I'm considering swapping the front set as well. Hoping they're not it bad shape.
Great video!! I have a 2016 Odyssey and was traveling for Thanksgiving and my dashboard lit up with the exact same codes & lights. I took it by an Autozone and they pulled the error code P0302. Did a ton of research and found the VCM issue is a prevalent one. I just bought the VCM Tuner II and since I don't have the tools/knowledge to change out the sparks am going to take it to a local shop and have them replace all of them. Then I read to use some fuel additive for a couple of tanks and run it like you stole it to hopefully clean out all the leftover gunk. We'll see. Wish Honda would've just fixed the issue!!
I have a 17 se . Put the muzzler on at 75000before a 6000 road trip . Mpg unaffected, eco light off. Instant power- best thing I ever did. Install the correct expensive plugs when you install the muzzler and you will be good to go.
Odyssey w/ high miles will have a significate piston ring wear on 1, 2, 3 when VCM is activated. Piston 1, 2, 3 will have tremendous negative pressure when VCM is on. Especially piston #3. It sucks up oil to the piston chambers. If your #3 spark plug has oil residue, your piston rings are worn out. No need to replace the rings. I highly recommend getting a VCM muzzler. Check the oil level time to time. Your engine shouldn't burn oil as much as before.
My van only has 71,000 miles still low miles and reading posts and forums have led me to everyone saying rings need replacement and or a muzzler. I purchased the muzzler now its trial and error
I have a 2012 with re-ring at 55k and at 118k lost cylinder #1 to misfire P0101, plug was completely fouled out. Honda wants $3k for another ring job, but I will wait and see. I replaced all plugs with $25 plugs and installed a vcm muzzler. Runs great now.
It will happen again! Sorry. I have a 2012 odyssey the same issue happened several times, kept replacing spark plugs but eventually, after doing some research I decided to get the Vcmtuner just installed and replaced all my plugs again, with the Honda recommended ones and so far the car drives better and has more power. Get ride of the VCM, disable it by getting VCMtuner.
Sorry to hear about this man. I just bought a 15 accord with VCM. I am ordering a muzzler today. Maybe see if you can apply for the class action law site against them. My accord fell out of the dates for the lawsuits. But if your van is having trouble with VCM Honda is required to compensate you with the class action lawsuits
I am not a mechanic but somehow the vcm mode disable certain cylinders at a particular temperature, leaving the van to run on 4 to 3 cylinders to save gas. However, according to many experts that turns out to create a problems such as oil burning and damage spark plugs cause a misfire. So many people recommend simply disabling the VCM by installing a device called VCMtuner. Once installed the van will run on all cylinders and no more ECO mode on the dashboard. Hope this help.
Honda has discontinued the VCM for 2022 Odysseys because of premature ignition firing DTC's, premature engine oil burning; front engine mount failures. VCM turns off cylinders 1, 2, 3 which causes the engine to run unbalanced. This stresses out the front engine mount. ADD the muzzler tuner and this issue goes away. With the muzzler you gas MPG on cruise control will go from 27 to 24 MPG. Muzzler will extend the life of your engine. Do a compression check at 100K miles cylinder #2 will be the weak one because of VCM damage to the rings.
If you do not disable the vcm you will need to change your oil every 4000 miles, Decarbonized the pistons every 10000 miles and engine flush every 40000 miles. Carbon gets stuck in the piston rings which causes it to burn oil in the chamber and your oil will degrade much faster. And if you are listened to Honda and changing your oil every 10000 miles you will get this issue by 60000 miles. For all that have this issue, remove the spark plugs and do a piston head soak. Change the oil more frequently with high quality oil. Do not trust a honda mechanic. You should be changing your own oil.
Had this issue on my 2011, there’s a TSB on this. 3k to fix this at the dealership. They did mine for free. If your car/van is still inside the 8 year window, it’s free. They won’t tell you that, I only found out online through some forum…forgot where. Hope this helps
Tip: For the engine cover set the front tabs and lock first then press the back down 👍. To solve this issue cylinder pistons 1 thru 4 need to be re-ringed and cleaned as well replace spark plugs
