My Rebel 500 manual says to adjust the tension with the bike on the side stand FYI. It’ll be a lot different if you have the rear wheel off the ground.

You should probably mention to check wheel/tire clearance as well once the locknuts are back on and tight. Those position indicators on the fork are not that accurate since the large silver bracket holding the axle has a lot of free play in it, like Mr. Plow said below.

Problem is that the right-side position indicator moves all over the place when the axle nut is loose so you have very low accuracy when centering the wheel.

You could leave the axle nut just loose enough to hold the indicator in place.

Thanks for the video, but doesn’t the bike have to be on the side stand with weight on the back wheel to get your proper tension adjustment

That’s a good question. I’m not exactly sure. I think you could make adjustments afterwards if you had to. Mine didn’t seem to tighten up much after it was dropped.

So is chain play measured by only pushing up? Or by pushing up, then down?

Can you post a link for the lift with the type of attachments I would need on the lift to use on the 500 rebel please ? I believe the L shaped ones are the right ones right ?

The right side of mine won’t tighten any more but the left side is very easy to move and the chain is still very loose. Do you have any tips? Is it fine to just tighten on the left?

Make sure they’re even. Use the bolts at the back to walk it in/out. You may need to replace the chain. It could have stretched

The nut opposite of the axel nut, is that significant? Does that need to be move / tighten loosened?

I liked the viper ones I had but I went with the cheapest option. Better to spend a few extra bucks and get one that you done have to modify

The Allen slot on the opposite side of my axle nut keeps spinning. Am I doing something wrong or do I just need a large Allen key to tighten it?

You can lean the bike onto the stand with the back wheel off the ground and prop it up with wood or something

You mentioned 1-1.5 inches of free play. 1-1.5 inches from where? Where do I start the measurements? Sorry... I’m new to all of this

Sparta Gomez from top to bottom. Lift the chain up and measure from up to down. That is the free play that’s in it

I disagree. It seems that you misunderstand what slack means. Your chain looks way too tight.

1 inch of freeplay will look pretty tight. How can you be so certain he is incorrect without measuring tape?

Proper would be using the correct size wrenches and a torque wrench. This is horrible.

@@1985kehc Find the SLIGHT_ youtube channel, he has a proper chain adjustment video that has all the proper tools and torque specs identified. 24mm axle nut(65ft lbs) , 17mm lock nuts(15ft lbs) , 5mm Allen key
