The 19-inch wheels may catch your attention, but the 2017 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport stands out from its larger brethren by forgoing the V6 engine and 3rd-row seats, and refusing to make promises it can’t keep. From the smaller, stylish cabin to its 19-inch wheels, the Sport may look like a nimble canyon carving SUV, but is it really the midsize SUV for you?
Prices for the Santa Fe Sport range $25,350 to $27,100 if you’re happy with the anemic, naturally aspirated 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder. Bump up to the more superior 2.0-liter turbocharged-4, however, and the price range jumps to $31,700 to $38,250. Don’t let the sticker shock you, however, as great rebates and financing offers are accompanying new Santa Fe Sports.
The 2.4-liter engine only makes 185 horsepower and 178 lb-ft of torque, but the 2.0T delivers a much more impressive 240 horsepower and 260 lb-ft. Fuel economy doesn’t really take a hit, either, with the all-wheel drive (AWD) versions of the 2.4 returning 20 mpg city/26 highway in comparison to the 2.0T AWD’s 19/24. Forgo AWD and those figures jump to 21/27 and 20/27, respectively.
So the turbocharged 4-cylinder provides plenty of power, and the 6-speed automatic transmission always seems to be in the right gear at the right time. All in all, the powertrain-like the rest of the car-is hard to criticize, unless you try some spirited driving in the twisties. The front seats, while comfortable, don’t do a great job of holding the driver in place, and the Santa Fe Sport feels like it would benefit from stickier tires.
There’s plenty of space for rear passengers, and although the dashboard’s design is a busy, two-tone affair, the controls are thoughtfully laid out. What more, the Santa Fe Sport is a safe car, earning 5 stars from the NHTSA, being named a Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS, and offering advanced safety features like forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, and rear cross-traffic alert. My wife and I just bought this vehicle in the Ultimate package ( same colour as the one in this video ). We love it! I did a lot of research. These SUVS get great scores and reviews from so many sources and what I found is similar to what you indicated, that it doesn't do anything poorly. Yes, some of the competitive products had features or details that surpassed the Sante Fe, but then fell short on something else. I do wish it had tire pressure monitors, but other than that, I feel it's extremely well equipped, especially at it's price point. The auto high beams and adaptive cruise control work great. It's smooth, quiet and the AWD system ( coupled with Nokian winter tires ) has no problems up here in Canadian winter weather. My only complaint is the dash layout. The centre console could be laid out more intuitively. But more importantly, is the placement of the controls on the left side of the dash for the driver. The steering wheel blocks the view of most of those controls, which means you have to look around the steering wheel while driving if you want to make sure you're hitting the right button. They should've placed those differently. Other than that, we absolutely love ours!

It should have tire pressure monitors (press the menu button a few times on the bottom right of the steering wheel to see them). I have a 2018 Santa Fe Sport and mine definitely has a menu to see them...

Not a bad review. I'm thinking about using this thing as a Hertz rental from Vegas to OC to move a studio apartment. Might be perfect.

Thanks for the great review. Did you have an opportunity to test out the ventilated seats? I'm curious to whether they will me a must have on hot days, or if they are more of a novelty. Thanks.

I have 2011 Fe and test drove a new 2018, and overall, felt good for city driving, the turbo kicking in from low as 2000 rpm, didn't really have any turbo lag in city and picked up very well when asked it too, much better than other turbo's that lag for a second... but it did seem slow 0-60 that I tried.. though there were 5 of us on the test drive, it did about 9 sec... I have to go back and try again... I need max. of 8 sec. for this test, to be on the short list.. do you have the accelertion results for this 2L turbo ? and the decibel cabin rating ?
@jackveech4941
@jackveech4941 5 месяцев назад
9 seconds is definitely a 2.4L. 2.0L has a 0-60 of 6.6-7 seconds. I know I'm years late but still thought I'd answer as I own one.
@rpmautoreviews9249
@rpmautoreviews9249 3 месяца назад
@@jackveech4941 No, not in the real world. I don't have pro equipment, but I tested 2019 Santa Fe and the 18, and real world, it's slower. Maybe 8 secs. is what I find for this, if not weighed down but 7 and under not likely. Maybe on a cold day with some wind behind you. The turbo as a bit lag to get going.
@jackveech4941
@jackveech4941 3 месяца назад
@@rpmautoreviews9249 that's odd - I have a 2017 and I've done 0-60 in 7 and below a couple times? I would definitely say less than 8. I live at sea level though so maybe that changes things; and I don't regularly travel with any weight.

Can't find one honestly titled video for the Santa Fe Sport. Every one of the Santa Fe reviews ends up being an optioned out model. I get technically it may still be a sport but when it has every option including usually the 2.0T it's hardly the common sport model most of us are looking into buying. Frustrating as these models are in practice so far from the base sport.

Grow up, middle school boy. The Hyundai Santa Fe Sport is a junker. Lousy ride, dog of a standard engine, interior rattles, so-so brakes.... it seemed that this car was engineered by a bunch of monkeys. I rented one of these POS Sports with 12k miles two months ago for three days.... turned it back in for a far better Ford Edge (and I drive Toyotas!) in less than 24 hours, and the folks at the Enterprise rental car counter were NOT surprised. I drove a far better Hyundai Santa Fe Limited back in 2013.
@jackveech4941
@jackveech4941 5 месяцев назад
@@eskieman3948So six years later that's the reason Ford is discontinuing the Edge as they can't sell them while Hyundai is making their way to the top of the food chain... Also I'll agree with you the base engine sucks but you can never judge a car by its base/rental trim. Most development money goes to high end trims.
