It’s another commute with Zack! As usual, please feel free to suggest a bike you want to see featured here. If we get enough comments, we’ll send him home on that one next.
--
It’s no secret we’re always trying to get our staff to work a little harder. Especially the ones who always seem to have too much to say. “Write it down!” we always shout at each other. Zack Courts is a classic case, always arriving to the office after his commute with a bunch of opinions about the bike he’s riding. Too much this, not enough that, and occasionally has some decent insights that we thought might help consumers or entertain enthusiasts. So we strapped a camera and microphone to his helmet and told him to turn it on when he leaves his house. A lot of his talking in his helmet is complaining about drivers, yelling at red lights, and wondering why billboards aren’t more expensive. But sometimes he actually talks about the bike, and those are the parts we keep. Got a bike you would like to see discussed? Let us know and we’ll send him home on that one next.

@5putput If something goes wrong with the bike when its that new do you honestly think it would hold up well? Please don't misunderstand me these bikes are beautiful machines but they get off the hook because of 'character'. I think everyone would love to have such a bike in their garage but back off not because of the initial investment but because of the reliability issues.
@axs7689
@axs7689 6 лет назад
@5putput so you keep a motorcycle only when its in warranty? I mean if you like MV thats great I'm not belittling your choice. I'm the kind of person who keeps a motorcycle for years and likes to work on them. Italian motorcycles need proprietary tools and service intervals are much shorter however Ducati has made lots of progress in this regard not MV. If you're talking about reliability in a one year or only warranty period I'm not sure if you have ever dealt with the shift in attitude of a dealership as soon as the warranty is over

Having the shift lever fall off isn’t a great selling point for the MV, makes you wonder what else might go wrong with that bike over time.
@chadm528
@chadm528 5 лет назад
If a shift lever falling off worries you about long term reliability i would do some more reading on motorcycles. That bike was shipped over to the states in pieces and assembled by some mechanic at a dealer. Clearly he didnt go over the bike properly, but a loose bolt on a lever is far from electrical issues or the engine failing.

I also bought a 17' Dragster RR, got about 1500kms on it now and replaced every thing plastic or fairing related with carbon. The spoked wheels really stand out and I think the extra 25hp or so compared to this one definately makes its a bit more fun. It is probably the most beautiful bike I have seen, very aesthetically pleasing. Only issues I have are with the quick shifter and it jumping into false neutral many times.

Nice work. Also thumbs up for carrying the toolkit on your commute. For my bike, two combination wrenches, a single allen key and a Phillips head screwdriver cover most fasteners and fit under the seat. I just wrap them in a small rag and plastic bag so they don't rattle around. That combination was enough to lift the tank and get my fuel hose reconnected at the side of the road after it unclipped on the way home from work one day.

Buy a brand new MT-09 SP and put $3000 into it and you’ll have a bike that is still way cheaper then this bike and way better. Sorry not a fan of MV after watching all the videos of the reliability issues and quality control stuff with the shifter falling off a brand new bike being a prime example.

Definitely unfortunate for it to happen during filming, but it happens all the time. I lost the front brake lever on a one-week old brand-new Suzuki when I started riding back in 2001. I was able to find the lever, but the bolt that slid out was lost in space. Bolt slippage happens to all the manufacturers, best and worst. A loose bolt is not (necessarily) a sign of an unreliable bike.

True story: one of my customers bought a gazebo from Italy. Damn, it was truly beautiful, one true garden jewel but there was a petite problem: it was so flimsy, so bloody fragile that it needed some extra engineering and upgrades to keep it bolted to the pavement in case of a sudden summer storm or, you know, just a cheeky wind or something. I’ve came up with a solution but in order to move forward I needed its colour code to paint the extra parts so I called Italy. I talked to a guy from design & technical department, explained the problem and his answer blew my mind: _“Signore, Lei aveva raggione! (Sir, you’re right) it is so and so but it is so beautiful, am I right?”_ Fuck me! He was absolutely right, I couldn't deny it; it looked superb so right then and there I’ve completely understood everything Italian, you name it: Alfa Romeo, Ducati, Ferrari, Italian fashion etc: It may not work all the time (especially whenever you’re expecting it the most) but, fuck yeah, when it does work it will perform like nothing else in this world or/and it will look astonishingly beautiful. “It looks great” - Italian philosophy in a nutshell.

Ouch. That was embarrassing. There was probably some yelling and hand waving at MV when they saw that. When I talked to a MV dealer, he said they are actually pretty reliable, and if anything goes wrong, it happens early in the mileage, then it's fine.

A shift lever falling off is poor assembly, nothing to do with the manufacturer itself. Bikes are shipped in pieces and put together at dealers by "a certified mechanic"

It looks like a piece of art. And much like other Italian pieces of art, like Da Vinci's Mona Lisa, it's not ment to actually be ridden. Imagine riding the Dante's inferno. It can't be done.

OK, so this is the perfect MC Commute. Nice bike, good explanation of the bike details, a real life problem while riding, and a quick and easy temporary solution to the problem to get you home or to safety. You were calm and held it together. I think most of us would have been yelling and swearing and kicking the living fuck out of our bike. In fact, I'm going home to kick mine just in case it even THINKS about breaking. Nice job Zack. Can't wait for you to have access to the new CB1000R. I am so torn on the next bike to add to my garage.

Dropped the lever and you still rave about this mv! And more than just any mc commute bike I can think of. But as you say - makes you want to ride. Good vid as ever - and love the extra drama. Oddly my viw of the Brutale's gone up as well.

I know what you mean about Italian motor vehicles. Had a 1967 Fiat 1100. Being a young, sometimes, foolish, drove that little car like a maniac, in my mind, I was driving a FERRARI.

Good honest review as usual. Shame about the bolt coming loose on the gear-shift but seeing as I found a couple of loose nuts and bolts on my MV Dragster I know that it wouldn't put me off buying another one. Just means that you have to go through the bike with a fine toothcomb after its first few miles. As for character... it goes a long way. Tried a few other bikes this year but there's something missing from them. They mostly felt dull and boring. That engine is the perfect blend for most jobs most of the time.

Zack basically said this is an emotional decision not a practical one. I don't think there's anything wrong with purchasing an MV Agusta (or anything really) if it has a design, sound, fit, and finish that reaches out to you. I don't doubt the other bikes everyone is bringing up are a better alternative in one way or another. I just think something has to be said for uniqueness. Thanks for the honest opinion Zack, both good (slick looking, pizzazz) and bad (mirrors, slippery pegs, and shift lever).

My bike got stuck in third gear on that same freeway years ago! It was after wrecking in the car pool lane, but 3rd gear was a God send to get going before the cops showed up. Pulling the clutch with a broken collar bone on my way to Hoag Hospital was no fun though. Anyway, I have to say that the only time your gear shifter should be falling off is in a wreck.

You can put the Italian into the bike but you can never take it out lol. Love the bike but this video just make me glad I'm sticking with the Japanese brands. If I had the new paginale I would only want to look at in my gerage all day long ... but to take it to the track I would be too scared I'd hurt the sexy machine that it is.

I had this bike for a year and a half, I put 4,800km on it. It’s a beautiful and really fun bike. If you’re considering this bike. Make sure you have two motorcycles. God for bid you have anything break or need replacement you will be waiting for weeks if not MONTHS! (I’m talking from first hand experience). It took 3 months to receive 3 fuel gasket replacements.. practically the most basic and replaceable components of a bike. The after sales customers service is the absolute worst. They refuse to give you any ETAs for parts and most dealers refuse to even work on the bike; even while mine was under warranty! I traded in the bike and bought a 2017 Aprilia Tuono Factory for the same price I payed for that MV. Best damn decision I’ve ever made.
@pentiumradeon

is the throttle on your tuono very sensitive? I test rode one and I had to have my hand on the clutch the entire time, any bump on the road would translate to throttle response.

Handled the broken shifter like a pro. Didn't bitch. Found a work around. Kept riding. Didn't bash the bike for it. I appreciate that. Excellent specs on the bike and it looks great. The price though... Ah?!! But hey, you're paying for the talking hands and such. LOL. Excellent vid, Zack!

Waiting to see how the coming KTM 790 Duke competes in this displacement segment. I do prefer a grumbly, barking twin. Really wish Yamaha or Suzuki or Kawasaki would produce some BEASTLY large displacement triple (about 1300cc) that revs to 12,000 rpm, built to the same sort of philosophy as the Ninja 1000 sport touring category but with the least amount of weight possible.

I got the 16 F3 800 RC, the bike breaks down a lot of times already. It couldn't start, headlight bulb broke down just after 1000miles, exhaust valve failure, low battery, broken side mirror etc. Nonetheless, I really love the bike. It is super fun to ride. The handling is sharp!

When people complain about a bold getting lose. -_- Three cylinder vibrates alot in idle. Maybe the bolt wasnt properly set to torque. Who cares. Buy a new bolt, crank it to the recommended torque settings and rock on!!

i laughed so hard when the shifter fell off. it brought me back to my first Kawasaki/basketcase that seemed to always have a time limit on the shifter...and yes it will cost you more to own an Italian bike especially when you have to order a dozen shifters for it, keeping one with you at all times...the Italians also really love the idea of an Achilles heel, like my Ducati, i lost the left foot peg one day when i backed into a pole and that cost 300 to fix thanks to the cast aluminum piece that even the swingarm goes through

Pretty handsome bike no? Phillis Diller beauty yes. Aside from the your questionable views on beauty you liked the sound and handling. Negatives- low torque, thin seat, marginal fuel mileage, useless mirrors, not bad dash and stiff handling. Oh yeah Italian build quality. If the bike was a girl your taking home to the parents, your parents would be looking at you disapprovingly and telling you could do much better.

A similar thing happened to me on my Buell xb9r, the shifting linkage broke, and I was stuck in fifth gear. Despite that, I was able to take off from the lights in fifth gear with no problem. Torque is awesome.
