I'm taking a quick break from my UK series to bring you this evening drive. To get to the UK I first had to cross the Atlantic Ocean. I did this by catching a direct (yes direct) flight to London Gatwick at the Winnipeg James Armstrong Richardson International Airport. The new terminal was just built a few years ago, lets go have a look!

Very excellent as always, Phil!! My parents used to live in St. James when they were young. That area and especially the airport have improved significantly in the last six years since I've been through there.

yes especially St.James street. It was an absolute nightmare to drive down there before.

Thank you for this great video. This is the route I always drove to get to the airport and it was great to see so many familiar sights (especially the Thunderbird Drive In at the corner of Jefferson & McPhillips!). I think the site of the old terminal is a potential sight for a new Royal Western Canada Aviation Museum building, which I think would be a very appropriate use for that site.

Paul Speidel soon, when Chief Peguis Trail is done, that will be the easier way to get to the airport from the far north side (Garden City, Riverbend, Maples, etc), instead of going down McPhillips & Inkster. Thanks for checking out my channel.

Thunder Bay has surpassed Winnipeg by crime rate, it's quite embarrassing for us The Target that was in the Intercity Mall here (the only Target in the city) had such big prices for it's products. It's now replaced with a Lowe's, the first in Thunder Bay.

Very nice scenery in this one, Phil! My friends and family down in the States always comment on how beautiful the sky is in the Prarie provinces. Target never made a go in Canada because it was not the same Target I'd always take trips to the U.S. to. It had a different interior and just wasn't the same. There was a Zellars here in Lethbridge that went out and Target was planned to go in, however, we got a Save on Foods instead.
@TransCanadaPhil

yeah we got Save On Foods here recently too. I pass right by one on McPhillips at the 2 min mark.

Great video, Phil! I happen to love airports, large OR small. Target failed?!!? Wal-Mart's #1 competitor couldn't hang on... That's a shame. A pleasent Golden Hour ride through Winnipeg!
@TransCanadaPhil
@TransCanadaPhil 7 лет назад
Yup, Target was in and out of Canada in record time. They opened hundreds of stores across the country, and just as soon as they went up... they packed up and left. They said they just couldn't make a profit for another 4-5 years. Makes you wonder, didn't they know that to begin with? Why even come in the first place.

I liked the old airport, but last time I saw it was 1991. Grew up in Winnipeg

Whoa! They KNOCKED down the airport terminal???? I have memories of that building going back to the early 80s! Thank you so much for these videos man...helps a homesick 'Pegger!

Yup, remember the old airport terminal used to be on the far side of the loop (at the end of Wellington), but now the new terminal is adjacent to where the old one was, but on the north-side of the loop now, the first side you see when you enter the loop.

Target's quick exit from Canada was a pretty big embarrassment. Their stores in the US are actually pretty good. Not sure why they couldn't figure out how to do that up here.
@TransCanadaPhil
@TransCanadaPhil 7 лет назад
it makes you wonder since nothing really changed from a market position from the time they entered to the time they left. It's like they didn't do any homework before setting up shop!.
@EpicThe112
@EpicThe112 7 лет назад
AsphaltPlanet1 I can answer that for you it might be due to the high harmonized sales taxes 10-15% 13% in Ontario or the exchange rate which is US$ 1 = CA$ 1.3

It was a shocker to me. Target is headquartered in Minnesota which borders Canada. I would think Minnesota company would know a lot about Canada.
@TransCanadaPhil
@TransCanadaPhil 7 лет назад
yeah it's a reasonable assumption. Now the closest Target to Winnipeg is about 2 1/2 hours south in Grand Forks, North Dakota. That one's been around forever (at least since the early 80s) and I've shopped there many times.
@TransCanadaPhil
@TransCanadaPhil 7 лет назад
yup, they opened too many stores though and they shouldn't have headquartered Target Canada in Mississauga. They should have opened Target Canada's headquarters in Winnipeg, which would have been nice and close to corporate headquarters in Minneapolis. Then instead of having a whole new distribution centre, they could have probably just tried "testing out" the Canadian market a bit in places like Winnipeg by using the same supply chain distributers that serve the Minnesota and North Dakota stores and then just build the business out slowly across Canada.

Wow, that median on Inkster is huge. Lots of room for BRT lanes if they ever wanted to use that route. You drove by the Winnipeg branch of a large electrical wholesaler I used to work for!
@TransCanadaPhil
@TransCanadaPhil 7 лет назад
yup I've often advocated the same idea, that when the BRT/LRT lines get extended into the North side, Inkster Blvd is a prime location to run the line from Main Street westbound out to the Meadow's West area. They can easily fit it in the centre median the whole way. It's an ideal route as it runs directly through the heart of the north end in for an ideal east/west route.

Almost got the feeling the Safeway transport REALLY wanted to pass the PC aka Presidents Choice/Superstore truck.....LOL Also I am guessing Winnipeg is also converting its street lights to the Low energy white LED lights from the orange sodium lights as here in Edmonton as the light "heads" are exactly the same

I love it how the airport in my city (Kansas City) is way less nice and open than Winnipeg's yet it carries almost 3x the passengers in a city that has 2.1m people in the metro versus 800k.
@TransCanadaPhil
@TransCanadaPhil 7 лет назад
I think the difference is that Winnipeg's airport serves a rather large geographical area since it's the only major international airport for a huge area. It actually gets more than 4 million passengers per year from people who come from North-western Ontario, Saskatchewan, and North Dakota.
@plorsomnia
@plorsomnia 7 лет назад
That is true but KCI also serves a large geographical area considering the isolation of the city. It served 11+ million passengers in 2016 but the design is so underwhelming you would think it would be only able to handle 3 million. Because of the airport's size people who fly into it will probably just think its a hick town while it certainly is not. Winnipeg's airport leaves an impression while KCI is just an airport you want to get out as soon as possible. Sorry for the rant, I just wish our airport was more representative of the city.

Nice Phill your airport has direct flights to the Northeastern United States like EWR for NYC then Amtrak train to DC JMFRVA and Mid Atlantic Roads via EWR airport train station and for Winnipeg airport they can have ice road truckers deliver Jet fuel for them this is common in my area with Philadelphia and Newark Airports sending Jet fuel tankers to Lehigh Valley airport Allentown,PA home to Mack Trucks

The Blister nope I just drive a ford focus. I mount my camera outside on a long pole windshield mount that holds the camera up high above the roof. Haha, I don't make enough money off Patreon to quit my day job, it's just a few extra dollars per month. ✌️😀 Thanks for checking out my channel.
