After all these years, the 4Runner is a rare example of an SUV that's held fast to its 4x4 roots. And for 2017, the Canadian market is getting treated to the new TRD Pro package for the first time. We take this even more offroad oriented SUV out for a family trip to the mountains for our weekly review.

This is the first time I have ever responded to a review but you made a comment that I wanted to throw my thoughts in on. It has to do with your comments about the safety packages. I will admit that it would be nice to have the safety features you mentioned but at the end of the day what counts is survivability. In other words, if you have a significant accident, what are the chances you will walk away? I owned a 2016 4Runner SR5. A week ago I was involved in a very significant accident when some idiot pulled right in front of me and there was absolutely nothing I could have done or that any technology would have prevented. I hit the other car at a full 60mph. The result? The 4runner was totaled yet me and my daughter, who was sitting in the back seat directly behind me, walked away without major injuries. Had I been in another vehicle, such as a Corolla you mentioned or even a Rav4, I am convinced that me and my daughter would probably not have survived or at the very least would have suffered major injuries. When I was told I could get another vehicle of my choice, not to exceed the value of the 2016 4Runner, I didn't hesitate and chose another 4Runner.

Glad you're OK, Larry. That's rattling, I'm sure! Yep, these packages are not a silver bullet but they can be very effective in many scenarios. But not like the one you were in, from the sounds of things.

Solid 5 speed, AWESOME!!!!! I'm a Toyota mechanic and this transmission is SOLID! It will last a lifetime plus more. That's why I own one and am advising my brother to purchase one.

Exactly. The Raptor's 10 speed transmission might implode we don't know. We know the 4Runner is tough as nails and will certainly run well over 300,000 miles with basic care. I doubt the Raptor or any other suv can make that claim. Beyond that the Raptor is WAY more expensive than the 4Runner. I could buy a 4 Runner and a Corolla for what a Raptor costs and have both outlast the Ford. The reviewer seems to miss the point entirely. People who buy the 4Runner don't give a shit about baby seats or soccer practice. This is what you buy before or After having the brats. It's for men, not for moms or emasculated males.

I hope they don’t upgrade to a 6 spd transmission or God forbid an 8 spd. I can’t stand those things, they’re constantly searching for the right gear to be in. The interior is perfect. Those big knobs are so that you can push them while wearing thick gloves without hitting 3 other buttons at the same time. I couldn’t care less about lack of keyless entry as it is one more thing to break not to mention needing key fob batteries every 4-6 months as a result. In other words, don’t change a thing. If people want upscale they can go to Lexus for that. I hope Toyota keeps this truck simple and reliable as it has always been. It’s probably in the top 5 most reliable vehicles on the planet.

I have a 2015 4Runner SR5 and I absolutely love it. Fuel economy is not great (though pretty good for this class of vehicle) and the ride is a bit choppy. I find it the power and acceleration more than adequate with the V6, and I can say that because I used to have a 1994 4 Runner with the V6 and 3-speed automatic, which was a tortoise to 2015's hare. You also get bulletproof Toyota reliability and amazing capability in winter conditions. That said, even I will admit the 4Runner is not for everyone.

I watch your reviews every week and as always they are great, I'm very surprised you don't have more subscribers. I was particularly looking forward to this week as I have done probably a hundred hours of research into getting a new 4Runner as my next vehicle. My two cents on the TRD Pro model over the TRD off road model is that unless you plan to do zero modifications to the 4Runner the Pro isn't worth the extra money. Really it's a cosmetic package with a 1500 dollar suspension package slapped on it. Spending the extra 5-6k on aftermarket suspension and tires on the trd off road model would get you an infinitely more capable rig with larger tires/lift and much better suspension. I agree with you a big drawback is the fuel economy but I noticed you mentioned the 5 speed transmission a number of times. Although very old that 5 speed is legendary for its reliability and longevity. In the new Tacoma they put in that 6 speed and it's so bad that many have already sold their Tacomas and gone elsewhere, all for a very marginal "fuel efficiency" boost over the older models. If you look at any Tacoma online board there are hundreds of threads regarding it. All these new 7-8-9 speed transmissions are great for fuel efficiency but I question how their longterm reliability will be and if they cause problems down the road have you really "saved" any money? As always fantastic review, keep em coming!
@erosthespacesoldier1712
@erosthespacesoldier1712 7 лет назад
It's more then cosmetic and $1500 in suspension equipment. It has off road tires, not all season, articulated anti sway bars, and a leveling kit. Some people still lift them, I seen one with a 3 inch lift, but personally, I wouldn't take a new $45,000 (USD) truck anywhere you'd need this kind of lift. I'm buying one to enjoy weekend trips with, and an occasional road trip to Moab, UT. Other than that it'll be my daily driver. I also wouldn't take the running boards, they are offered here in the states, BTW... what this truck needs are sliders, not running boards.

7 passenger seating is cramped in the 4 runner. The focus of the TRD Pro is a decent base for off road work. It's not a soccer mom vehicle. I'm glad it doesn't have the rear bench. I just bought the 2019 TRD Pro and love it. Funny thing, all the things you nitpick, I could give a shit about. I learned to drive on a 1973 Maverick with no heat, no radio. Electronics belong in the living room entertainment center, not the dashboard.

Thank you for your reviews! Very informative and well put together! I watched this one on the TRD Pro 4Runner and considered your comments about the transmission. I have an 03 4Runner Sport 4x4 V8 with what I think is the same 5-Speed auto. 03 I believe was its first year. This transmission is bulletproof. As well as the V8 and V6 Toyota is using in the 4Runner. The combo of trans and engine, being so reliable, is truly attractive, and, they do their intended purpose with aplomb. Yes, MPGs aren't the best, but this is a small price to pay for the high functioning pair and high level of reliability.

Gave you a thumbs up and hit that sub button for a really good job. You put a lot of work into this video and it shows. Now my one disagreement. At 15:10 you will notice (Your wife probably) puts down her window with such ease, never having to look where the window button is. I totally love the placement of the buttons for the windows and I believe the proof was in pudding so to speak. I own a 16' 4Runner TRD PRO and while it is not perfect I do have one complaint that nobody who does reviews ever complains about. I guess you would have to be a true owner before you would notice though. I don't know if they come with it standard or not in Canada but here in the states they seem to. In the cargo area there is a sliding base that comes out. It is totally useless. It only move a mere few inches and that is it. If the base would slide out all the way and then have folding legs that would come out for support you could actually sit down and eat an entire meal in total comfort in the great outdoors. The hatch would even offer you protection from above. I am currently trying to find me someone who specializes in "Slider" controls so that I can make this happen. Keep up the good work man!

I'm so glad I stumbled upon your channel! This is really helpful as I'm researching SUVs before travelling several hours away to the nearest used dealerships. I don't know much about vehicles in general, so maybe you can answer a question for me: how do Highlanders and 4Runners compare in size? I'm familiar with driving an '06 Highlander, but I'm not sure I could handle a much larger vehicle. However, your review did make the 4Runner very appealing!
@FamilyWheels
@FamilyWheels 7 лет назад
Thanks for checking out the channel! To answer your questions: the Highlander and 4Runner would be quite close in terms of size but with a different focus. The 4Runner is a more harsh-feeling, offroader with a taller ride height (more ground clearance) while the Highlander has a more car-like and refined driving feel. Let us know what you decide on!

What do you do about the Toyota safety package when you're off-roading? What are you going to do when you bump things or whatnot and break your bumper or wherever the sensor is? What do you do (as this is made more for off roading) when you add a 3 in lift kit, 33" tires, steel front and rear bumpers, front winch, rear tire carrier and a roof rack? Does that safety stuff still function or are you suck with a vehicle that you can't modify? If so, i think you should be looking at a pathfinder or highlander if that's the case. In the world of offroading, you usually end up modifying your vehicle, most of the time with bigger tires and a lift kit. I can see that throwing any kind of safety equipment's calibration.
@MikeBriggs24
@MikeBriggs24 5 лет назад
I believe that the Toyota has always targeted the off road enthusiast as their intended demographic for the 4Runner. If you're looking for an SUV to pick the kids up from soccer, or stop by the grocery store, their might be better options such as the Highlander or RAV4 that better meet those needs. However if you are looking for an honest, very reliable vehicle to handle off-road adventures or overlanding, the 4Runner is a great platform and will deliver legendary quality, durability and reliability for years to come. And the 4Runner holds is value better than most other vehicles which is a huge plus down the road.

I am with you on the SR5 trim...this is a great trim but overkill for most of us. My wife made the same comment about the lack of climate control, especially since our 2005 4 Runner has it. The beauty of the 4 Runner is its lack of complexity. When we get ours in a few weeks time I predict it will stay with us for many years.

Thanks for the review. We are a family of 4 with a small dog and selling our car back to VW. I have been looking around for a replacement vehicle and like you, I grew up around the Land Cruiser, Land Rover Defender, Nissan Pajero, and Toyota Hilux, so I have a soft spot for the 4Runner. Tomorrow I will be test driving an 2016 4Runner SR5 Limited version but now I think I'll end up taking the Highlander due to its refinement. I wish they had updated this vehicle to match the competition. Part of me still thinks that I'll end up buying the 4Runner.

I went and test drove the 4Runner. I liked it a lot but I did not have the best customer service experience and I haven't bothered to go back. I wanted to get the 7 seater but it was sold when I got there. I will keep looking for one and then take wife and kids and see how we fit in it. The only minus point for buying this vehicle would be the cargo space when all 7 seats are up when we take a trip to the states (We drive with my in-laws). I also wonder as to how much room it has back there for long trips. I never got to test drive the Highlander because all the used ones were sold. The vehicle sits up high with excellent, commanding view of the road. The steering wheel is properly weighted and it really reminds me of my FIL's truck, Ford F150. The power delivery is good and the 5 speed transmission shifts very smoothly. It handles very well for a vehicle, truck based SUV and the overall ride quality was outstanding. I like the vehicle but I am afraid it doesn't have enough room for 7 when needed.

Honestly, I'd rather not have all those safety features standard. I don't want the vehicle to be able to decide I need to brake or any other features that basically let the driver pay less attention to driving. Plus its just more things to potentially break, especially if you take the vehicle off road.
@FamilyWheels
@FamilyWheels 7 лет назад
Hi Cobb... when I first started reviewing cars, I didn't like these systems either but they're a non-intrusive safety net and you have the option of turning them off completely if you really don't want them working away in the background. It's amazing how mainstream these systems have become - whether you're looking at a Toyota Corolla or a Ford Raptor. And the stats don't lie, they do a really good job of keeping people out of bad accidents. So whether you like it or not, we'll be seeing more cars with this kit on board - including the 4Runner, according to Toyota Canada.

@@FamilyWheelsSo more idiots get to stay on the road to terrorize the rest of us who actually know how to drive. This is why mankind is in decline. We coddle those who should perish and their bloodline gets to continue to be spread. More shit bags to collect welfare and social handouts as they have kids they cant afford and buy cars they cant drive. So glad my 4 Runner TRD Pro has none of that crap. Simple is best. It does not break. Perhaps the safety systems best method to prevent accidents is by generating fault codes that keep the vehicles tied up in the shops and not on the road!

Toyota is making a really stupid statement saying families don't want to go offroad and reach areas the soapbox soccer wagons can't go. I believe there are a growing number of families that are tire of pavement adventures, where crowds are equal to every day commuting. There are vast lands at least in the Americas to the south of Canada that are still open and quiet and filled with beautiful adventures. Active lifestyle with a tiny bit of offroad etc. I do agree that my lifestyle caters more to the SR5, but I've noticed the TRDoff road isn't that much more than the 4x4 SR5. It's weird how they can be similar in price (YMMV). The 4x4 SR5 fits my family but if the TRDoff road is similar in price, I will jump on that.

Thanks for the video, would like to add that the 3rd row seating option raises the platform 6-10 inches and diminishes cargo area considerably also requires that much higher lift to load. 3rd row removal is a pain, and the 2nd row seat's back folds on top of the seat cushion in the 3 row option unlike the row 2 in the 2 row option where the seat cushion tilts forward, be sure it's what you want before you order. I have '2016 Trail. I can't tell it is noisy. The TRD Pro porbably has more agressive gripping tires which make more noise than any other tire. My current tires are Yokohama Geolandar A/T G015 and they aren't any noisier than the ones (Bridgestone Dueler H/T) which I've received stock when bought the car. I don't find the cabin noisy either. @Gazziza29
@Gazziza29 7 лет назад
True and while I agree with some of your complaints about the truck there also isn't a perfect SUV out there. People will complain that the 4R is sluggish, that it has an outdated 5 speed transmission, poor MPG, not the best interior or infotainment system etc etc. If you added or improved all those things to the 4Runner you're no longer looking at a $35K-40K (USD) truck, you're looking at 45-50k. Just look at the bloated prices of the Jeep Grand Cherokee and Ford Explorer. People will praise the 4Runner that it retains it's body on frame construction and off-road ability but then go around and complain about MPG, noise and body roll. Those are just things you have to live with if you want a BOF SUV. There is no proverbial unicorn. The 4Runner might be an old dog when it comes to some things but I'd take reliability and durability over flash and features any day of the week. The Jeep Grand Cherokee which is probably the closest competitor to the 4R despite being unibody has more features than you could ask for. However look at the transmission problems, the infotainment system that got hacked, the same UConnect system that can completely shut down a vehicle on the highway, the electronic shift knob that won't shift, dashboard shutdowns. I mean god, just look up all the RU-vid videos of errors that come with these high tech "features". You see that in a 4Runner? No. Like I said Consumer Reports grades the 4R as most reliable. Take a guess which one is the least reliable.

Gazziza29 Patrick MacDonald so funny when I just took my girlfriends cvt Nissan Rogue and my friends new jeep to the dealer. Just love how Toyota is the wise one waiting to perfect their products while everyone out there rushes to shove technology crap in their vehicles. I have a new 4runner and just love it to death. They keep things simple and will outlast many vehicles out there. But people can complain about having the newest thing in their vehicles. We will just be the ones waving going by.

late to comment , old style interior means reliability on the off road , digital equipment is not reliable such as push button start or remote start etc .

honestly i think i'm torn between this and a tundra. had my first child just two months ago.. not sure how crucial the size of the tundra is in comparison to the 4runner. tacoma is out due to your review about the difficulty in dealing with car seats in the rear. these are my remaining two options before purchase.

fuckinmetal1982 two great choices. For our needs and just the straight up cool factor, I think we'd get the 4Runner for our crew.

Had a 2011 tundra crew cab rock warrior wonderful truck 221k before I traded it in for the 4runner Pro! Having the 4runner I do miss the power and speed of the tundra! However I don't miss the 7-9mpg of the tundra! The 4runner Pro does everything needed and too has more interior cargo room. If mpg isn't an issue than the tundra will give your the most comfortable driving compartment!
@fuckinmetal1982
@fuckinmetal1982 6 лет назад
you were only getting 7-9mpg? that's atrocious! i thought the truck got 13-16mpg consistently??

I have a 2017 SR5 Premium and love everything about it. However, Toyota really needs to go with a V8 for the weight of the vehicle.

Ski Fall my wife has a new fully loaded midsize SUV from Hyundai and I can't stand all the driver assistance features, first thing I do when I get in is turn them all off. Fairly useless and just make people lazy drivers.

I assume all of us here love to drive so yes those system are stupid. But for my wife who doesn't like to drive but have to (her job required) drive 1hr+ one way to NYC everyday; this system make sense. A few times she was so tired after work and stuck in traffic for over an hour; she can't park on the side of the road to sleep at the tunnel entry area. she could have fall asleep and let the car hit something. Hitting a car is minor hitting a pedestrian would be deadly. Also when I see my 80+ yr old uncle drive I got nervous. Yes WE don't need those system but I love car manufacturer put the system in with the option to shut it off, so I don't have to worry getting hit by elderly or over tired driver or 'tweet and drive' teenagers...

Absolutely agreed on the dependency it breeds in the inattentive drivers among us. I wish carmakers would name this feature in a way that would make their users realize how bad they are at driving.

I think Toyota should update the interior and features a little bit like the ones you mentioned but not too much though or else people (fanboys) will whine/ complain about it being 'soccer mom - ish' 😀. IMHO, it's the only design that Toyota did not fail (all others are crap) .
@Anomize23

joe TheBet exactly what Dean said. The Interior is just simple enough for anyone to navigate through while driving. The rest out there seem to be too distracting when there's too much buttons everywhere.

I would want the vented swats with the faux leather and be on either the trail trim level. I don't want the safety sense system. I want to drive my vehicle, not have it drive me.

I couldn't agree with you more. The truck is severely outdated and needs updates to the engine, transmission, safety features etc. I still have a soft spot for them too though, the 4Runner is always a great looking tough truck. I feel like Toyota refuses to change much because they keep the mentality "if it ain't broke..." That drives me nuts! Keep up the good work.

Patrick MacDonald that's the beauty of this truck. It's feels old school and some of us like that. I mean there are plenty of options if you want a modern SUV that is more comfortable and fuel efficient. Heck even Toyota offer the highlander. This vehicle is targeted towards overlanders and off-roaders and their number one priority is reliability.
@danielplainview4778
@danielplainview4778 7 лет назад
Patrick MacDonald I totally hear what you are saying but watch they will update it in 2019 with some Atkinson cycle new engine and 6-7 speed transmission and the reliability will go way down. Part of why this truck has such bulletproof proven reliability is because there simply isn't anything fancy to break! I will agree interior definitely needs an update but personally I really like the "chunky" look of the dash and knobs etc. Bigger screen and apple CarPlay android auto definitely needed though!
@danielplainview4778
@danielplainview4778 7 лет назад
snazari1994 I agree, I think what really happens is most people buy them and then it's just a family vehicle and never leaves the pavement. Then you hear complaining about handling and fuel efficiency etc. If doing zero off road travel I wouldn't buy one frankly, FAR better options out there like the highlander as you mentioned. Don't buy a big rugged body on frame rolling cube for grocery getting and you probably won't be disappointed. If you want to use it for overlanding or family off road camping trips/weekend warrior stuff I think it's hard to beat.

This is the debate that I had with myself throughout our week of testing. Part of its charm is that it's more basic, less refined. It's a reliable, unabashedly offroad focused SUV in a sea of jacked-up sedans. But even through that lens, it does have things it needs to improve on, no doubt.
@snazari1994
@snazari1994 7 лет назад
Scott Gerry exactly. I have a lifted 1999 4Runner with 310k and man it feels solid. I go camping and take it everywhere without worrying about it and I just do regular maintenance. Also all 4runners are made in Japan, even the 5th gens which I think is part of why it's bulletproof.

My grandpa just purchased a 4Runner and according to the manual when it's in 2wd it's running in front wheel drive. The knob to switch to 4wd is called a "front wheel drive control switch".

That kid looks way too big to be in a baby seat. Probably better to review a more easy to get 4Runner like the TRD Offroad Premium. The Pro is usually an 8-12 week special order at most dealerships.
