Our home Sarita, a Solitaire 52, was leaking from the screwed down teak deck and we needed to do something. After getting a cost estimate of around 50 000 Euro for ripping the teak off and painting the deck we decided to do it ourselves. We are not boat builders so we learned a lot in the process that took almost two years (we did a lot of other things as well). We bought paint and equipment from Dutch De Ijssel for about 1200 Euro and had some stainless jobb done and new bolts bought for about 100 Euro and used about 4 liters of epoxy and three cans of epoxy filler for about 500 Euro. We also bought some new tools and it was a cost staying in the yard, which we would anyway, and of course all the hours working, This video shows how we did it and it might not be the professional way but it is the way we did it and if you want to find out more details, please feel free to ask us or follow us on Facebook; LucinaMagnus...

Butyl tape has it advantages/disadvantages and can be used for heaps of stuff. I have another love in the chemical department and that is TEC7. I must say it is a real winner over the old PL-family (PL 200, PL 400, PL 600, PL 800). It can cure under water and still the most environmental friendly high performance adhesive I've tried or seen. It can be stored fore 18 months and even be frozen…

Wow 22 Months !! to remove the teak & complete painting the deck... I'm hoping to have teak removed and deck ground back in a week ! ( wishful thinking I guess for a 41' steel hull boat.

Well, the actually work took much less time, we renovated the whole boat during that period so it was one of over 150 projects we made and did a delivery sail from Marseille in The Med to Bahamas, a ski trip to Svalbard, a couple of months in Azores house watching and other. But one month sounds optimistic, the ripping off the teal and the painting was the things that took least time, it was all the work around that takes time (like dissembling the interior to remove deck hardware, fairing the surface before painting etc. Also depends on number of people working and size of boat. All I can say is Good Luck, it is worth the work! Magnus

Sorry, to late now but, at 07:40 I note a new direction called Stirboard 😉 and maybe the rest of that text needs some attention? Otherwise a hell of a job you had there, impressive!

Did you have a hard time finding the screw hole after tearing off the teak. Some guy told me to tear off the teak then circle the screws with a marker then remove the screws then fill with epoxy. Has the epoxy holes held up threw the paint without putting a layer of fiberglass down . I have a old tayana 55 that needs the teak removed

Brian, thanks for watching. Most screws we unscrewed (some had bad grooves so we ripped the teak with the screws attached to the deck with no problem since the teak was thin) and had no problem finding the holes on the fiber glass deck. We drilled around 1500 holes for the screws and another 1500 to dry the core out (we Han a moisture meter) in places before filling with epoxy to hardened were the core had been moist. Once the epoxy had hardened we topped the holes up with epoxy filler (as other drapes and uneven area on the deck), sanded, new layer of epoxy filler, sanded and so on. In the right light you can see if there are “dents” in the deck (there is also special paint to see that. So far after three hot Greek summers none of the screw holes filled with epoxy and epoxy filler has shown in the paint. Good luck with your boat!!

A matter of opinion, we think it was worth it.
