A video tutorial on how to start a 2018 - 2024 Ford Explorer with a remote key fob that has a dead battery or showing the message No Key Detected.
If your Ford Explorer remote key fob has a dead or bad battery or is otherwise broken, the DIC will display NO KEY DETECTED when you attempt to start it.
To start a Ford Explorer with a dead or bad remote key fob:
1. Place the smart key remote fob in the backup slot located in the center console.
2. Start your Ford Explorer as your normally would.
This video will show you how to start a Ford Explorer that has a dead or broken key fob battery, or is otherwise showing the No Key Detected notification on the following Ford models:

My husband was stuck in the drop off line at school when it said “not detected” 😂😮. I brought him the spare fob - still “not detected.” He called the Ford dealer he just bought his 2022 from - they told him to tow it! 😮 He popped on RU-vid and found this video - life saver! This worked - He called the dealership back to tell them about this video!

This just helped me on my dads 2015. I double pressed lock (since unlock button was broken for a while) and saw the lights flash after landing at the airport. I must’ve used the last bit of juice because I wasn’t getting a key detected after that nor were the buttons doing anything. Life saver!!

Underneath that pocket there is a chip reader that can read the chip that is inside of the key fob, if the key fob is close enough, even if the key fob has no power.

Mine is attatched directly to the key blade and cant be separated. Not sure if this works on all models, but I was able to turn the electric on in my car, throw it in neutral, turn the key all the way back off, and then I can turn the engine on. it somehow overides whatever is locking it. Not sure if this is just some coincidental hiccup in my car, but it worked for me

This is super helpful, however, I have an electric cooler installed where this would be. Is there another placebo could out this key? Car has started but it says no key detected. Can't shift to drive

The code is printed on a sticker in the vehicle, some interior trim will need to be removed in order to access it. We actually don't have a video on where to find it yet for the Explorer but if you search around on RU-vid you should be able to find one.

Does this work if I get a new key fob made from a third party? I lost my key and ordered a new key fob. Wondering if I have to take it to the dealership to reprogram the key or was it that the original key fob was already connected to the truck so, without batteries or undetectable key the fob itself connected to the truck? (Basically, can I do this with a third party key?

the key can be third party or OEM but it must already be programmed to the vehicle for this procedure to work

If this method will not allow you to start then you may have an issue with the vehicle itself, unless the key has been damaged.

changing the battery in the key fob will usually fix the issue - if the issue persists, the key fob may eventually need to be replaced

The undetected fob should not be located in the glove compartment but in the center console , that you have to open, as shown in the video

You can't - you need two working keys in order to be able to program a new one yourself. The only other alternative to the Dealer would be an Automotive Locksmith.

I looked up 2003 Ford Explorer and this comes up instead, never pressed play but played anyways, now get a like but its a DISLIKE AS DESCRIBED, DON'T USE A 2003 TO DO YOUR FOB ON A 2020. 1,000% DIFFERENT!!!
