Just a quick rant. 2018 L5P regen cycles frequently when making stops or swapping trailers. The truck likes to be worked and to many stop and god and idling it does not care for.
Don’t be afraid to smash the pedal. I got stuck in traffic for 2hr at a stand still message on the dash came on keep driving scared me since it was a new truck 2017 L5P. So when you get on the peddle GET ON IT and blow that shit out !
Get an edge cts monitor that will tell you whens its in regen, when it is in regen you want to hop on the highway and keep the rpms above 2k so everything gets nice and hot!
nick stuart so if i start mybtruck in the morning and i want to go buy milk and it starts doing regen does that means i have to go around town on the highway until it’s done?? A 5 min trip is now a 45 min trip ? Diesel engines shouldn’t regen at all period.
Duviel Hernandez if you constantly are doing small trips like that yes you’ll get a message saying continue driving. I would recommend a monitoring system like the edge CTS it can display your dpf soot lvl and I believe you can force regens. Running a fuel additive that lowers the combustion temp of fuel helps a lot on emission equipped diesels.
You gotta drive it like you stole it. I drove an 18 l5p for 20k miles for work and never seen a regen. Do some full throttle pulls every couple days and you won't have that issue
you need an EZLynk monitor so you can see how full your dpf is. If you time it wrong, you could be having 90% full then 100 and only back to 90% again because you didn’t drive it long enough to clean fully. A DPF status is a must for all new diesels. That way you can see for SURE if you’re in regen by EGTs and actual soot load percentage
I have a 2017 L5p.... you need to be driving it to complete the regen. If you stop and park somewhere in hopes to let it complete the regen it wont ! It will turn off and start all over again once you start driving again. Of you had any diagnostic gauge like others are suggesting you can do an actual forced stationary regen where it will complete it while its parked . Also recommended to always let your regen cycle complete before turning off vehicle as it will extend the life of the injector inside the dpf filter /tank
You have let truck completely finish regen before turning off otherwise it will be constantly running regen until something fails due to all extreme heat
no spark L5P will not allow regen when vehicle is stopped, so you must be seeing it running up a bit after finishing a cleaning or cleaning attempt. Only the dealer can do a stationary regen on GM or Cummins. Ford allows us operators to do it ourself. See my videos of what that actually looks like. 900 rpm doesn’t cut it! Lol
Neo Craft is correct. It’s at High idle to maintain warm exhaust temp (not regenerating) so it can continue the regen when you get back on the road above 30mph.
you don't delete a truck that had a bumper to bumper warranty for 5 yrs 60,000 miles if you have an extended warranty. you don't do it with a 3 yr 36,000 either unless you have thousands of dollars to burn if something goes wrong with your truck.
Have you had the truck since new? I have a 19 Denali and my did a Regen on me in traffic this weekend and the smell in the cab was very noticeable. Did you have this same issue and did it go away? Mine has 1400 miles on it. I have smelled it before on another Regen but was hoping it would go away as the “new” burnt off
I have had it since new. The burnt smell has subsided slightly. But when it goes into its regen at a higher idle you can still smell it. Idling or driving. I think it's just these engines now equipped more sensitive emissions. One thing I have noticed more recently is the exhaust smells sweet and kinda gross now.... I have 40k miles now.
There is no notification. The engine idle speed will increase and you will begin to smell a odd burning smell from the exhaust. Also it will happen while you are driving and the only way to tell is you will notice your MPG start to drop off if you are monitoring it.
Yeah i wouldn't be idling while regen, unless its for a short period. you must not be getting the catalytic hot enough for a long enough period (not driving longer distances than a basic commute to work). these trucks are made to work
Sean Sohi GM will not allow idle while in regen. It must be moving for that. A engine monitor (EZLYNK) would prove that. Idling after a regen was started doesn’t harm anything, btw. The DPF is designed to take the 1000+ degrees and doesn’t care what rpm it’s at. The engine has nothing to do with a regen fuel injection like Ford or Dodge does. It has a “9th injector” that sprays fuel inside the exhaust pipe right in front of the DPF to light the soot for burnoff. It can do this at its discretion and load of engine is meaningless to it. But if you don’t allow it to completely clean, you’re gonna be in regen every time the truck goes above 20mph until it’s clean (can take up to 25 minutes of no stop driving). That’s why a monitor is a must. It’s the only way to know how full the dpf is at any given time.
I have a 18 gmc 3500 and I probably regen 3 times a week I hate it it destroys my fuel mileage and it does stupid stuff while I’m regen trans shifts goofy it jolts coming to a stop and it stinks like kerosene
If it regens alot its producing alot of soot , do u drive it alot but mostly short trips ? that could be it or fuel quality as well def get an edge cts3 monitor best money youll spend
I also have an 18 3500 Chevy l5p mine was doing the similar thing and found out I had the indirect injector was cracked and leaking and when I'm driving around town my weekends go about anywhere from 150 miles to 200 miles in between if I'm just driving around town
Diesel are meant for hauling and trips ..not your Lil car type vehicle...gotta get in on the highway to blow out and burn off soot..Don't buy a diesel if you don't know about a work truck
